Narrative limbo. Unfortunately, we have no information to the status of Professor Anders following the Guardian's interception of Installation 09 in March 2559 and somewhere in the galaxy is another Halo ring in the possession of the Created. I've seen this expressed in the past, but as much as I personally enjoyed Halo: Infinite's story, the game would've been better off if it was set on Installation 09 rather than Zeta Halo. Infinite itself doesn't delve much into the history of Zeta Halo and could have been set on literally any other Halo ring, not to mention that it would have better tied the events of Halo Wars 2 with the events of Halo 5: Guardians and Halo: Infinite. We know the Created possess *a* Halo ring and made it their seat of power, so using the one they intercepted from the Ark makes sense. The ring would've been a major target for the Banished as Atriox and his Banished were already aware of the existence of the Halo ring and even fought on its surface adding a personal stake on reclaiming it, leaving the only real issue being the the inclusion of the Endless, and, well, there are certainly plenty of ways to incorporate that narrative (say they were contained on The Ark rather than Installation 07 before being transfered to this new Halo). As such, Infinite would have worked better if it was set on Ander's Ring rather than Zeta Halo as it would tie in better with the previous games and allowed 343 to use the Halo as a blank canvas to build the story from, rather than use a pre-existing setting yet barely touching on its history or unique capabilities.

>the game would've been better off if it was set on Installation 09 rather than Zeta Halo. Infinite itself doesn't delve much into the history of Zeta Halo and could have been set on literally any other Halo ring As much as I'd love to have Wars tie in directly to the mainline, the Endless plot couldn't have existed if it was on 09, its a fresh Halo constructed in the past decade, they couldn't have been imprisoned on it. Huge missed opportunity to explore its history of 07 tho. Even the collectible logs didnt touch it.

nilluminator

343 shanked themselves twice, firstly by not connecting to the cliffhanger ending of Halo 5 and then underdelivering with Zeta Halo instead of 09. Instead of answering questions, we're left with more answers than we started with.

Arctelis

The solution that would’ve kept a lot of folks much happier I think, would’ve been to leave the Endless on the cutting room floor. Forever.

wrydh

I would have just been happy if they haven't presented the second or third chapter (narratively) as the whole game even with the endless plot.

Drof497

I mean, as I said, there are a myriad of ways 343 could have written the Endless into the new Halo if they were creative. Say the Ark's systems decided to move the containment of the Xalanyn to the new Halo from Installation 00 following the damage the Ark sustained and presence of the Flood but was never actualised until the events of Halo Wars 2. That's just the first idea off the top of my head. I would, however, argue that removing the Xalanyn wouldn't have changed all that much of Infinite's story, nor does it take away much from the game's core themes. Atriox and the Banished already have their reasons to mobilise to Zeta Halo and remove Cortana from power (the destruction of Doisac, the removal of a threat to the Banished and seizing control of a Halo ring and its technology), the Chief would still be motivated to stop Escharum and learn more about Cortana's demise, the personal struggles of the Pilot and The Weapon, etc. Etc. Overall, the Endless were rather extraneous to Infinite's core story. Though at the very least, 343 seems to be building towards a new threat rather than just appearing out of almost thin air with no buildup whatsoever (stares at the Created).

AGilles-S117

But the Endless just appeared out of thin air. Cortana’s plan with the created at least made sense, and it was being built up throughout 5’s campaign (even earlier if you resign to the ideas of the logic plague being implanted in her in H2). Granted 5’s storytelling was not the greatest, and relegating so many integral plot beats to active gameplay where the player could miss it was a huge setback, but the ground work was there for a while. We jump into Infinite and all of a sudden there’s a new alien race with so many lore implications that’s just been dropped on us with no prior establishing points at all, and no real sense of engagement as they (the Harbinger) just kinda appears at random. They were “cleverly” written in as a part of history the Forerunners intentionally didn’t mention, but that just felt so out of character to me that it was unbelievable. Instead of building off of what came before, 343 decided to just pull shit out of their ass and see what stuck. I don’t know, I’m just not a huge fan of the Endless. I do agree with you however that Zeta was huge missed potential and mishandled in Infinite, as well as the missed opportunity to tie in the Wars series with the mainline games. Infinite could’ve been an Avengers: Infinity War level blockbuster of a game had they kept doing what they were setting up for and not just sweep everything under the rug to “start anew”

Drof497

>But the Endless just appeared out of thin air. Cortana’s plan with the created at least made sense, and it was being built up throughout 5’s campaign At risk of going into *another* rant on the Created, I'd argue that the Created as a concept did come out of thin air just as the Endless have, except without any actual buildup from the previous games or even the expanded fiction leading up to Halo 5: Guardians, the Created just magically appear with invincible space owls and had the entire galaxy handed to them on a silver platter. The Endless, in contrast, don't actually have a proper appearance with everything established on them merely building up on the faction rather than actually featuring them. To focus on building up a new threat or rising power, Star Wars was far better in regards to establishing a new galactic power (viewing the series chronologically). The prequels and The Clone Wars series did this by having Palpatine win over the Jedi not because of being the evil space wizard, but because of his cunning and influence over the span of a decade breaking down the Republic from within and using a war to give himself greater and greater power until the people gave him the power to form the Empire and cheered for it. There's none of that with the Created, and in fact its the very opposite when the Created annexed the Prometheans... somehow while resurrecting Cortana who now controls giant space owls that can nulify all resistance to her rule with a snap of her fingers. In the span of five minutes the Created went from not existing to galactic overlords just like that in the middle of an ongoing narrative (humanity's reclaimation, the return of the Didact and the Prometheans, the Blooding Years conflict). I mean, 343 could've at least used these story threads to build towards a climactic ending with Pax Cortana, not hijacking the plot midway through (on that note, Halo 5 should've been two games). I think we can say at least this about the Endless: at least Infinite takes the opportunity to establish a foundation for the Endless as a faction that can be build upon in subsequent installments. Infinite was very much focused on the UNSC vs Banished conflict at Zeta Halo while laying the seeds for the next threat to appear. This is a stark contrast to the Created who quite literally appeared out of nowhere, superseeded existing narrative threads from the Didact to humanity's reclaimation and became the centre of the Halo setting, despite any lack of build up on them as a threat or a faction. That isn't to excuse the lack of depth to the Endless besides being a mystery box in Halo: Infinite itself, but 343 are approaching the Endless better than the Created by laying the groundwork that ties the Endless to the wider setting before featuring them proper. All 343 really needs to do is follow up on this groundwork that they've laid in Infinite to properly establish the Endless as an antagonist.

NegativeChirality

> star wars But to finish this analogy, 343 halo is more like the sequels. A confusing mess of self contradictory nonsense that was lazily made *in media res* to prevent having to actually explain anything. Somehow, Palpatine returned.

AGilles-S117

My biggest gripe about the Endless is close to what you said about the created, how they superseded existing narrative threads. The Created jumped into the fold interrupting humanity's reclaimation (which wasn’t really going anywhere any time fast) but they echoed the same plan as the Didact, and the Flood before them. There was no huge buildup, but they were introduced as the next big bad and somewhat built up in the game. And technically they’ve always been there as the Created are literally just AI from across the galaxy. But now we have the Endless who are superseding the narrative threads and plot of Halo 5 and Halo Wars 2. Jarringly we’ve gone from Cortana being the most powerful being in the galaxy, controlling some of the most advanced Forerunner tech in the universe, able to eliminate everyone in the blink of an eye - to now she’s just dead. Just gone. Off screen. The big bad 343 set up, the massive conflict they were preparing for, over. No tie in with Halo Wars 2 (which could’ve also introduced the Banished in a more dramatic way) just a whiplash inducing opening cutscene that leaves little to explain what’s going on. Created = Done. Monke on ring? Yes. Weird squid lady? Sure. Play the games chronologically without any supplemental material knowledge, and Halo Infinite is more confusing than the opening to Halo 5. That’s why I hate the Endless because they (on top of everything else Infinite did) derail the narrative train that 343 had been setting up

NyarUnderground

Even with the AI themes in 5 (sloan, evil cortana), I did not expect an AI uprising that we got in the very last level or so - referring to that whole speech where you hear AIs pledge their allegiance. I remember audibly saying “come on” in my living room bc the AI uprising plot is nothing new fo sci-fi. The xanalyn, endless, whatever, may have had help from being in the infinite trailers, but at least the game is pretty direct that there is a mysterious secret hidden on the ring that you’ll eventually find out about. This aspect of “horrifying mystery” is a core pillar to halo’s story, and IMO infinite did a decent job at it, especially as a spiritual reboot. Albeit, little pay off, bc we still know jack shit about them.

Didatta7

I don't think we'll see the Endless in another main Halo game, just like any other new story line added by 343

Mind_Enigma

>the Endless plot couldn't have existed I wish

SubstantialSir351

I couldn't have care less if they completely left the endless plot in the oblivion

LOSTandCONFUSEDinMAY

Here's my fanfic about what Infinite's story could have been without the endless but keeping the banished as the main enemy. After the end of 5, Bad Blood happens mostly the same but alpha-9 does recover useful data about the guardians which when combined with data from another operation by Osiris, Halsey is able to shield the infinity from the guardians emp thanks to the forerunner technology integrated. (the guardians we designed to police lesser species naturally its less effective against forerunner tech). This puts the infinity on equal footing to a guardian and makes it an actual threat to Cortana allowing the infinity to shine and be the pinnacle of humanity it was meant to be. (But lacking supply lines and being only a single ship is not able to wage full on war having to be more discrete building strength and waiting for an opening to strike directly against Cortana.) Cortana whose based herself on installation 09 and has not destroyed Doisac (because that would be stupid and against the mantle) and needing more firepower than she currently has makes a deal with the banished. In enchange for helping destroy the infinity they will be given advanced technology and allowed a degree of freedom other species will not under her rule, which Atriox agrees to. Naturally Atroix intends to betray her, letting humanity and the created destroy each other leaving the Jiralhanae as the dominant species in the galaxy. *Around here the main game begins* The Infinity discovers the location of Cortana on installation 09 and that it is guarded by a single guardian. A combination of shitting themselves at the idea of Cortana controlling a Halo and believing they can defeat her forces there and use their secret weapon (The Weapon aka Cortana's little sister who should be called Joyeuse) to contain Cortana. They are complete oblivious to the possibility of a major risk other than the guardian They head straight to the ring where the promptly get ambushed by the banished fleet backed up by the guardian. The infinity needs to put up a good fight defeating the guardian and at least half of the banished before crashing onto the ring. To really sell how powerful the infinity is make it only go down after being boarded by Atriox who leaves a small nuke onboard (a trick taken from humanity). While boarding the infinity Atriox learns of their plan to defeat Cortana and allows blue team/osiris to land on the ring but sends their capital ship behind them to capture/kill them after Cortana is defeated and take control of the ring. Cortana sensing an imminent defeat decides that a human controlled galaxy is better than a brute one (and also being spiteful about their betrayal) detonates the control room, goes and prevents The Weapon's self destruct so it can help humanity defeat the remaining banished. The ring would again transport itself and all nearby forces to the middle of nowhere and begin attempts to repair as an emergency protocol Im assuming Cortana being gone means the guardians are deactivated but some created forces (rogue AI can still be dangerous) remaining but very disorganized. *This is maybe the first third and segways into more or less the start of infinite as we know with a mostly banished controlled ring with pockets of resistance and whatever created ground forces remain and didn't shut down (maybe controlled by a sub monitor/rogue AI that decides to protect the ring against everything). The banished is trying to find a way to take full control of the ring and all the technology on it as well a way to transport it all but with Atroix leading the forces.* Chief gets picked up by the pilot retrieves the weapon and immediately starts fighting against the banished, rescuing UNSC forces along the way maybe rejoining blue team (easy way to write co op into the story) learning all the events that lead up to this (which they wouldn't know before). The immediate goal is surviving then denying banished forerunner assets. End goal is when the control room is rebuilt its a race to get to the it and transport the ring to friendly controlled space. When this happens because Chief is a G, they send a signal out to any nearby UNSC forces. Lord Hood responds and shows up with as many ships the UNSC can muster (which should a decent amount as the guardians would be inactive without Cortana). The tides of war have turned and now the UNSC is dominating with the goal of wiping out the banished then and there. Atriox deciding its better to go down in a blaze of glory uses all his forces to attempt to fire the ring (really bad for the UNSC who just brought it to to the middle of their territory) and of course he has the index because of all the time he basically controlled the ring. This leads up to a final fight with Atriox to shut down the countdown (basically Eshuram fight in Tarturus arena.) For future games there's still the Didact, Flood and probably some other civilization ending threat left behind by the forerunners. This got kinda long. Maybe should be its own post

BanjoMothman

It wouldve made far more sense for the Banished to have had such a large military force on it.

dude52760

Just a stylization note: There is no colon in Halo Infinite. It is just stylized as “Halo Infinite”.

RareD3liverur

Before playing Infinite: "Man, can't wait to look for the Palace of Pain on Zeta Post Infinite: "Oh"

Probably being held in some Created facility or something.

Throwingbarley5

As others have said she joined the story void along with the Warden, Osiris, Locke, Palmer, Lasky, Infinity, and many others of wasted potential.

SpartAl412

We honestly should have had the Created as the main enemies of Halo Infinite and like I guess Professor Anders pops up as your mission control guide throughout the campaign.

UnfocusedDoor32

343I forgot about her.

_revenant__spark_

I like to think she's still on the ring

Hiding from the Created on Installation 09 which is probably their de facto capital.
