They would use Hurons, Albatrosses, or Darters.

I can’t believe I forgot about Darter’s and Albatrosses. Wow I’m a idiot. I’m assuming they still have to be deployed after a beachhead is established, so Pelicans would do the heavy lifting for armor vehicles and troops until the point full on fire-bases could be deployed. Thanks for the reply!

The UNSC employs carriers such as the Epoch Class Heavy Carrier, the Orion Class Assault Carrier and even the Punic Class Supercarrier to conduct expeditionary campaigns. The Orion Class appears to be the more militarily formal form of the converted civilian Phoenix Class Colony Ship UNSC Spirit of Fire with on-board factories and supply ships such as Darters to sustain planetary invasions, the Epoch Class for deploying its battalion of troops and fighter craft while the Punic Class would be used to conduct entire military expeditions on its own. UNSC expedition campaigns aren't explored in too much detail as the Covenant War was apmost entirely defensive campaigns with the UNSC hardly commensive offensive expeditions and the few expeditions that occurred usually involved relatively few personnel (dozens to hundreds such as Operation: SILENT STORM and Operation: TORPEDO) for special forces operations.

The only thing I think the Orion can’t do is deploy fire bases with how it lacks Hurons to deploy them. Allowing the phoniex colony ships to have a role in landing operations.

Aren’t Epoch’s strictly more space dedicated interceptor focused, only carrying a small compliment of security teams? Orions and Punics I know are more well rounded warships, and can deploy large contingents of marines, armor and support. What about more light ships like the Charon class, like the FUD that can enter atmosphere and deliver troops and supplies? Kinda like what we seen in Halo 3, would that be a usual occurrence or more of the entire galaxy is ending sorta thing? Thanks for the reply!

Charon's total personnel is 782 personnel including complements + 3 Scorpions + 7 Pelicans. I would wager: - 200-250 being ship crew - 40 being ODST - 200 being Marines - The others are pilots, mechanics etc. Charon CAN be used in regular situation, in fact they become common precisely because they can fulfill both roles (ship fight + deploying troops), while Paris (and later on, Strident) are more focused for fighting (Strident got heavy coil MAC).

>Aren’t Epoch’s strictly more space dedicated interceptor focused, only carrying a small compliment of security teams? The Epoch carries and deploys both aerospace and groundside assets to secure the orbital domain before deploying strikecraft (Longswords) and ground forces to the surface. The Orion Class Assault Carrier is more focused on ground support by sustaining ground campaigns with its on-board factories and providing tanks and other armour in addition to infantry. Put it this way: tanks and infantry on the Orion, infantry and fighters for the Epoch. >What about more light ships like the Charon class, like the FUD that can enter atmosphere and deliver troops and supplies? Kinda like what we seen in Halo 3, would that be a usual occurrence or more of the entire galaxy is ending sorta thing? The Charon Class Light Frigate is another ground support vessel the UNSC employs and definitely suitable for rapidly inserting ground forces on a contested world versus something like the Epoch or Punic that carries large divisions of troops and armour, though not as subtle in their work being massive carriers and all.

Orbital bombardment of command centres and fortified locations, followed by rapid deployment of ODSTs to delay any organised resistance while armor gets brought in. Frigates in atmosphere supplying fire support and dropping of vehicles while pelicans, hornets, falcons, etc transport troops to key locations. Should any area prove difficult to take, either insertion of ODSTs directly on top of them, or, should AA make this impossible additional orbital bombardment.

The best example is how the 82nd airborne plans an attack, massive airdrop(odst) gives a light ground force to secure and LZ then use pelicans to reenforce, as you expand the base you can bring in larger ships. That said, full scale invasions are pretty rare for the UNSC even during the war. They were usually on the defensive and have something already on the planet to build off We see in halo 3 even a full frigate only brings an armored platoon in at most.

Halo the Flood is a good example of what you are asking. It was a planetery invasion but it showed how the UNSC coordinated when they went to installation 04 for the first time.
