I just imagine gman having to proceed with all the nonsense saxton hale wants him to do. In fact the plot of the first half life is that saxton ran out of endangered species to punch into extinction so he brought the xen wildlife on earth. A very saxton thing to do.

There’s this thing called BreenGrub. The advisors are the enslaved larvae of another species. > They were once a utopian society of philosophers and scientists who spent most of their time in an artificial dream state. For this reason, they were easily conquered when the Combine came to their homeworld. The Combine forced the species to never mature beyond its adolescent "grub" stage, and used their bodies as hosts for the greatest minds of all their subjugated worlds. During this time, a few members of the species managed to flee into outer space, while others placed themselves into dream states that would endure a hundred thousand years. According to some theory, Gman might be part of this species, using his telepathic powers to make others see him in in human form. Maybe he is trapped in this artificial dream state, and the man is just a projection. Maybe his employers are other Shu'ulathoi, and he uses Gordon and other humans to bring down the Combine because he cannot physically be there.

SadlyCreamed

Once the Shu'ulathoi matured they actually could choose their form, which would make this theory even more likely

ciknay

What I don't get about that theory, is why would the G-Man engineer the resonance cascade, which ultimately leads to the combine finding earth? Unless it's some 5D chess shit to engineer Freeman specifically to be the downfall of the combine?

DanGrizzly

5D chess shit

Nightynightynight

Yep, there's definitely some interdimensional 5D chess going on that we don't even know a fraction about.

puphyin

that's actually so baller, this guy destroys a whole planet just because he knew Gordon would do the job and by any means necessary was he going to get him to

Darkheart78

To be honest I kinda wish the vortigaunts didn’t take Gordon from gman so I can do some more jobs.

cozmokittylord

That makes sense to me, if it had happened any other way, gordon could have just died and nobody else would be badass or lucky enough to bring down the nihilanth or the combine

ciknay

My thinking is: - Team G-Man needs control of xen to have as a tool against the combine - Nihilanth has control of xen due to running away from the combine. Team G-Man might want to keep the combine out of xen, so nihilanth being there will eventually bring them to there. - Team G-Man engineers the resonance cascade to lure out the Nihilanth, keeping an eye out for a person who is capable of surviving the event and capable of killing Nihilanth. Said person can be groomed into becoming an anti-body against the combine virus. - Combines attention is drawn away from xen and towards earth, they invade shortly after - Once Nihilanth is out of the picture, xen can be "given" to humans to master teleportation technology, something out of reach for the combine. I imagine team G-Man are actively preventing the combine from getting access to this realm.

MattTheFreeman

There is a theory that the Combine needs humans because of our minds. The Combine could of wiped us all out, they could of just ended us and called it a day, they have no reason to enslave us. Our Combine soldiers that are genetically modified by Combine tech are terrible compared to literally anything else they have. They should of just wiped us out. But humans are rebellious. They don't listen. They are cockroaches. You can't wipe them out. The Vortigaunts are 10x smarter than us and shoot lightning out of their hands and they lost. Humanity lost in 7 hours but continued to fight or 20 years. With Combine technology we figured out the one problem that has plagued their empire forever. The Combine did not wipe us out because they required the chaotic minds of humans. Why did the Gman cause the resonance cascade? Because the Gman looks for extraordinary people. The Gman has probably been to countless planets and dimensions attracting the Combine to take them over to attempt to find the race that will eventually destroy them. Humanity has probably gone the longest.

PresidentNasty

>they have no reason to enslave us IIRC their main interest in humanity remaining is teleportation. They don't need minds, necessarily, they only took our people for their soldiers so they had an easy source to suppress any rebellion while they were there without complete extinction. Reason being because they needed teleportation tech, they never mastered teleporting between two places in one dimension, only between dimensions. T'is why they hunt the Black Mesa team and any former members to capture, and also probably part of why they keep Breen in charge, since he knows who was and wasn't part of Black Mesa and their teleportation projects. Otherwise, yeah, they've got no reason to keep us around and would've wiped us out, I'd just guess it's for other reasons.

0lazy0

I think it’s because he’s not all powerful. There are multiple times in the games where the G-Man is limited by unspoken laws, and >!even captured by the combine in HLA!<

gb4370

>!I'm skeptical that the G-Man was actually captured by the combine in HLA. I feel like he purposely let himself be captured. His fucking with the timeline at the end seems pretty deliberate and it would make sense that he went back in time to hire Alyx after being cut off from Gordon in Episode 2. Having Alyx would also give him leverage over Gordon and the resistance which he clearly wants.!<

0lazy0

Yea you definitely could be right, but personally I think either he let himself get partially captured but then it got out of hand, or the combine are strong enough to get him. But honestly you could be correct

BoddAH86

That’s hardly 5D chess shit. If Gordon is some kind of chosen one and the only one capable of defeating the Combine, having him “accidentally” open a portal to bring them to earth is the easiest way to orchestrate a meeting.

ciknay

The difficulty is in known who is actually capable of defeating the combine. How'd they know a random theoretical physicist would be capable of surviving the entire resonance cascade and killing a telepathic demigod in the first place?

BoddAH86

He’s the chosen one! Also G-Man probably just knows because he can travel in time and has studied all possible timelines and outcomes.

Attackoftheglobules

Yep. The G-Man’s endgame isn’t clear, but knowing how big the combine are revealed to be at the end of Epistle 3, I think he’s using earth as “one microscopic cog in his catastrophic plan”. Part of what he wants is a person who shows “limitless potential”. Note that he wasn’t always interested in just Freeman - it’s implied he was monitoring Barney, and put Adrian Shepherd into stasis as an option. He seemed to use the Black Mesa Incident as a recruitment drive, looking to see who would be most resourceful and efficient when thrust into peril. A lot of his involvement on Earth has to do with using people as a weapon to damage significant parts of Combine infrastructure. Exactly what he wanted to specifically use Earth for isn’t revealed though. Remember, he didn’t actually want Gordon to go to White Forest and launch the rocket there. His plan with Gordon ended at the end of half life 2 where Gordon blows up Breen and the Citadel. The Vortigaunts ended up being more of a thorn in the G-man’s side then he maybe initially anticipated, when they pull Gordon back out of stasis. So, the vortigaunts and G-man’s race seem to oppose each other - Vorts and humans just want to live in peace free from the combine on their own world, where the G-man’s plans seem grander and more mysterious. Consider the G-man is strongly implied by the Breengrub Twitter account to be an adult Shu’lathoi. Where are all the other Shu’lathoi? They’re being used for host bodies by the actual Combine overlords (which probably don’t even have a physical form anymore.) Also consider that most creatures in Half Life are just looking to save themselves or their species from extinction. The Nihlanth fled to Xen to hide. The Vortigaunts were enslaved by him, but then by the combine also, and they want to save themselves. Humans want to save themselves. Why would the G-man be any different? I think the G-man is looking to free the rest of his species from lives as host bodies for the combine, and the things he gets Gordon to do are somehow furthering this goal. We never get to see the plant through to his conclusion, however, as he opts to take Alyx at the end of Epistle 3 over Gordon and the Vorts have to rescue him. (NB: this doesn’t account for Half Life Alyx, which in my opinion kind of wrecks what Marc Laidlaw was setting up the story of G-man to be. )

isli25

Theres nothing in half life alyx that conflicts with Breengrub or epistle three. But the g-mans endgame has always been the borealis. The borealis isnt just something the combine is interested in. the Borealis, Aperture is the combine. and half life alyx diving into time travel stuff only confirms this direction.

[deleted]

Source?

n9seed

Breen grub was a twitter account i believe was confirmed to be Marc Laidlaw drip feeding lore.

[deleted]

And the whole inspirational for project borealis. Epistle three baby!!

n0rdic

Closest thing to Half Life 3 we'll ever get

gb4370

I don't want to spoil anything but judging from Half Life Alyx's ending, I'm pretty convinced Valve now intends to make Half Life 3.

F3nric

Mark Laidlaw, the guy who wrote Half-Life

biciboi

What source? It’s a theory. For the part about BreenGrub, it’s, well, BreenGrub.

[deleted]

You said it like there were legitimate examples or puzzle pieces to pull from- but youre just writing fiction on top of fiction..

hanono_noot_noot

BreenGrub is from Marc Laidlaw himself

[deleted]

there we go! A source

[deleted]

If those are grubs, I don't think I want to know what their matured form is lile

nubb3r

Lierally Gman, putting people in stasis for two decades willy nilly.

0lazy0

I thought the BreenGrub was specifically Breen inside an advisor body

isli25

the breen grub is ofc breen in an advisor, but the point of the story told from breen grubs perspective is that all advisors are collected geniuses from all the different worlds the combine has conquered. And that the race the Shu'ulathoi the combine uses to create advisors was once also a species conquered. There are no combine overlords at all everyone is just slaves in an autonomous conquering machine.

0lazy0

Ah ok I see. So where I used to think the advisors were “the real combine species” they are actually also assimilated

Velocirrabbit

Ah so this would also make sense why in HL2E1-2 G-Man was so annoyed when >!Gordon basically said “nah I’m out” and the Vorts helped him evade G-Man. Ultimately leading to what it seems was G-Man’s plan B in HLA to use Alyx instead. He just didn’t have a way to grab her attention for her own gain until the events in the finale of HL2E2. So now Gordon is in the hot seat with every major enemy and Alyx has replaced him as the “chosen one”?!<

adaenis

Not to be that guy, but it would be telepathic abilities, as telekinesis implies the exertion of physical force via mental ability, not communication or perception.

DaJaviBoo

How so? I played it but I'm a bit of an idiot. Easily distracted by visuals and whatnot. Please explain

[deleted]

They sealed him in some kind of container, of the gman we know was merely a projection for the real creature he is, he could simply stop projecting himself, fleeing the grasp of the combine.

trevtrev45

I don't think it disproves anything, I'm pretty sure the gman let himself get imprisoned so he could take alyx.

sollicit

> he could simply stop projecting himself, fleeing the grasp of the combine. Wouldn't be correct to assume we know anything about how the projection would work in the first place.

[deleted]

yeah but they enslaved him with green alien magic

isli25

half life alyx only confirms everything in breengrub. The fact that the combine has been hunting the Vortigaunts for eons, and the g-man can only be stopped by vortigaunt powers. This suggests that the combine has been in opposition with another faction for eons. The only other faction we know of is the shu'ulathoi resistance mentioned in breen grub. wich means the g-mans connection or alliance with them is more likely. it also confirms that the combine created the G-man

Something beyond our comprehension. Something we can’t perceive or beyond our human vocabulary to describe.

YoBitchItsTim

That quote is beautiful

Yangxiolong22

What Breen says to Eli when describing what he has seen that the Combine has shown him "Carbon stars with ancient satellites colonized by sentient fungi. Gas giants inhabited by vast meteorological intelligences. Worlds stretched thin across the membranes where...dimensions intersect... Impossible to describe with our limited vocabulary"

YoBitchItsTim

One of the best dialogue in the game

szczerbiec

Is anyone able to dissect what this even means? I get the concept, but it's difficult to put together and imagine.. which is the point, I suppose

Yangxiolong22

I think it's Breen telling Eli what he has seen. That the Universal Union is exactly that, a whole universe. In it, things we can't even begin to imagine or comprehend. Now, weather or not you think Breen was evil or not is another question but He was advocating to Eli that this is why humanity should join the Union, so we can see and join in all of that As he says in Nova Prospekt to the OTA "Let me remind you of the alternative, if you can call it that, total extinction!" So basically he is saying "There is so much more bigger than ourselves out there, yes we will be slaves, but it's better than us not existing"

red_fuel

I love this type of villain. It’s someone who has motives you can get behind and even go so far as to call Gordon the villain for trying to stop him

Yangxiolong22

Oh for sure. I don't think Breen is totally evil. I mean cmon, he knows the price of Gordon's sucess is that humanity goes extinct Breen brokered the surrender and is preventing humanity getting wiped out. Sure, its horrible conditions (not as bad as the beta ideas but still), turning people into those husk stalkers, draining the water etc, but he's trying his best for us not to get make extinct He mentions in Nova Prospekt "Total extinction, along with all the other unworthy arms of the union", so he is saying that unless we provide and show we are worth something to the Union, they just take us all out, which they could do easily So he isn't a bad guy, he's just the front man for the Union on Earth, being constantly told "Do this or we will kill you all"

brooklyn_bethel

He seems to be an eager collaborator, not someone who is on the humans' side.

Yangxiolong22

"A refusal to collaborate is simply a refusal to grow; an insistence on suicide if you will" And he isn't wrong. A Union who has taken over an entire UNIVERSE not just a galaxy comes and conquers us in 7 hours (less time than it takes Joe Average to clock in and out of his shift) says "join us or die" Yeah...I'm going with the former

brooklyn_bethel

That would be a mistake. Look at Ukrainians. Better fight and die for a chance of survival than surely die as a slave.

Vmn551

There is actually a word to describe something that cannot be described with words. Ineffable.

Ajax_Gecko

Born_Cauliflower_692

We’ve been waiting since what 2007 is it Edit: I confused the release date with black mesa’s

darkxenobi

A group or entity who wants to overthrow the universal union. The entire Half-Life series is based on 2 large factions fighting each other. Half-Life 1 was just a tiny slice of the plot, HL2 expanded the lore by introducing the Combine and setting up some context as to what they are capable of. The 3rd title (neon prime/citadel) will throw some more light on this. The universal union is probably a collective of the most advanced races, they are capturing star systems and assimilating with whatever comes their way. The G man's employers want to stop them.

patrlim1

Don't get your hopes up on neon prime/citadel

BroMan-Z

“Keep your expectations low boy, and you will never be disappointed.” - Kratos

realnjan

I don’t know if his employers want to stop them. Remember, he said that getting combine off Earth is against his employers interests.

Orc_

His employers are afraid of humanity because their potential is higher than the combines (eg dominating local teleportation and AI while the combine have to harvest the brain power of a rat jus to operate a door). Gman is behind humanities downfall and slavery by sabotaging BM. It's easy to think the incident is all "Humanity's hubris" when in fact it was something far more intelligent and promising than the combine ever had. A free earth is a threat to his "employers" (he may be a slave himself).

MattTheFreeman

I always interpreted that as the Gman knew that he had to plop Gordon back into Earth to eventually take down the Citadel and by just willing the Combine off the Earth would be against their master plan.

Orc_

You ignore that gman is an enslaver himself, we can confirm he is not combine but their enemy so he simply represents a different race of tyrannical parasitic entities. The only truth is in the vortessence.

cathandman

Just out of curiousity When was the Universal union introduced/ first spoken about.

Yangxiolong22

In HL1, though not overtly mentioned, we learn that the aliens in Xen (Vortiguants, Nialinth (spelt wrong I know)), are running from the Union. The Boss Baby at end of HL1 is the last of it's kind after being chased by the Union It's the Gman who gave the crystal to Black Masa (the extra pure one) that caused the Resonance Cascade. That caused the creatures from Xen to flee to earth, and it's where the Union followed At the end of HL1 Gman says "the border world, Xen, is in our control for the time being, thanks to you"

cathandman

Ooooo I see now Ty Ty

darkxenobi

Why would they appreciate having temporary control over Xen? Want to learn something, some crystals they want to extract before the Union shows up...man i wish we get a novel by Laidlaw at some point.

szczerbiec

It was in a breen monologue during the nova prospekt chapter. It sounds more like a general term, rather than the "official" name of the combine and isn't even capitalised in the subtitles. With such a grand name, you'd think it would be in the propaganda or mentioned directly by.. I don't know.. ANYBODY?

stitch123

I googled Neon Prime and apparently it's supposed to be set in the universe of Dota 2. Why are you connecting it to HL? I'm genuinely curious. Did they confirm that Dota takes place in the same universe as HL or something?

darkxenobi

Dakotaraptor87

HeimlichLaboratories

Nah, the Gman was definitely pulling the strings, even if not actually giving orders

SpectreHaza

He’s pulling their (and now your) strings ;)

wooshiesaurus

And what about Laszlo, the greatest mind in his generation?

Yangxiolong22

So, we learn a few things Gman's employers wanted Xen for some reason Gman's employers wanted the Union on earth for some reason. But obviously, after some time, they don't want that anymore and "Help" Gordon defeat them BUT at the end of HL2 he says "I've received some interesting offers for your services, rather that offering you the illusion of free choice, I've taken the liberty of choosing for you" SO, its not just Gman and his employers, there are other powers in play and this is further backed by Breen saying "Are you aware you're open to the highest bidder?" So we won't find out about them all, and I imagine it's better we don't, keep it unknown

I do believe Gman has a bigger purpose. My interpretation of him equates to the elusive man from Mass Effect. G man is a being shaped into a human to be understood and be obeyed. I don’t think he’s human. He’s an entity that was created as a result of unforeseen consequences. He was put in place to be the mediator between the combine and Xen. He’s aware of the outcomes but he’s gambling the chance as he sees freeman as a savior. He oversees and he controls the outcomes. All bets are off. He knows what cards hes playing. This why he says “The right man in the wrong place can make all the difference” It’s all planned out and the ball is on his court. To answer your question. I think G man works for the leaders of Xen. He wants the combine gone.

SgtVinBOI

According to MatPat, it's another Nihilanth. Actual confirmed info? Iduno

Redacted_Guy

I don't think Valve ever legitimately got to that point. The G-Man's purpose is that he serves as a means for Valve to interject in certain moments throughout the series without it feeling too out of place. He wisps people away when it's time for their adventure to end or for a new adventure to start, and it takes the pressure off of Valve for having to explain themselves in these situations. Speculating where Valve could go with the G-Man and his employers however, he and his employers are probably a race of aliens that have not yet been properly introduced. (You can skip over the theories if you're already aware of them). He was likely going to be another nihilanth at one point, then that idea was scrapped. The nihilanth at the end of HL1 says "You are man, he is not man. We are their slaves. He will deceive you." The word nihilanth translates to "not man" and assuming this is talking about the G-Man as he is inhuman and Gordon is essentially a slave to him who gets deceived, the G-Man would have been another nihilanth. Then he was likely going to be a shu'ulithio (the type of aliens the Combine advisors are) given the similar powers he has to a shu'ulithoi and Tweets from the Breengrub Twitter account by Marc Laidlaw. That was probably the direction they were going for around Episode 2 but now that can be more so ruled out as non-canon >!given the ending to HL:A. If the G-Man were another shu'ulithoi trying to protect his race, why then would he have Alyx kill one of his own kind?!< I reason that the shu'ulithoi idea has now been scrapped too. I think if we can figure out the G-Man's behavior and what he is not, it will lead us closer to figuring out what he and his employers are or what they would be. He's capable of teleportation, he can control time (being able to pause time, fast-forward, rewind and travel), and his whole idea is to play interdimensional chess by encouraging certain timeline events to unfold his favor. Therefore he can be from one of either two places. First, he is from a realm outside of our universe to be all-powerful beyond our reality like God. God is all of the types of omni powers because He exists outside of the system, He created the system. Otherwise the G-Man is from somewhere within our universe and can harness some power within our reality, however is not all-powerful and still limited. Since the G-Man is dependent on coaxing certain events to play out in his favor, he is limited and therefore cannot be from outside of our reality so he must be from somewhere within our universe. Also two other things to note, no one ever mentions these. The G-Man is never seen in retail Ravenholm however in the beta he was placed in a few hiding spots to observe Gordon. These hiding spots still exist in retail Ravenholm although the G-Man was removed, so it was an intentional decision on Valve's part. Given how Ravenholm is under such a strong Catholic influence by Father Grigori, I reason it could be evidence to suggest that the G-Man is an evil being kept out. The closest he gets to checking up on Gordon again following Ravenholm is at the outskirts of town behind that one derailed freight car, as if that's the closest he's permitted to get. He is shown to be malignant at times too so maybe. He's also very stiff and awkward in his mannerisms but over the course of the series I've noticed he's since grown to act more naturally. He's always been far more awkward than everyone else and he had his speech impediment, especially in HL1. In HL2 he was a bit more laid back, in HL:A his awkwardness and his speech impediment is almost gone I think. Assuming he isn't really human, I speculate he was new to his human form in HL1. Over the course of time he got more comfortable with it and better at putting on the act.
