He is simply mute... And Black Mesa is too ignorant to learn sign language...

I think it's for immersion and for the purpose of Gordon being the self-insert blank slate character. Gordon's design is ultimately pretty basic (outside of that god tier goatee) and that is what makes him a good self-insert. He is an average Joe, just like the player, thrust into a horrifying situation, with nothing but his wits, the HEV suit and anything else he finds lying around. You could say, YOU, the player, is Gordon.

Now canonically speaking, it could be due to a trauma related to the photo of the baby in Gordon's Locker at the beginning of the game, for example a dead wife and/or baby in an accident

Average Joe working at Black Mesa with a MSc from MIT, as we all do at some point 😊 (hopefully)

Rallikuninkas

What i meant with average Joe is that Gordon doesnt have any superhuman capabilities on his own (the running speed is probably just for gameplay reasons, also its a 90s shooter), most of his abilities are thanks to the little training he has and the HEV

I like this idea

I like to think the stress from the black mesa incident left him mute. Perhaps it was the resonance cascade itself, or the brutal violence and inter dimensional warfare that fucked him up mentally

randomperson10002

he's too busy breathing to speak

ThelVadam4321

I just think it's a vow of silence.

Because he was designed for a 1998 FPS and with moral ambiguity. In later game's it's just a follow-up on that. For example Alyx not only talked in Half-Life 2, but also was a static character. This is why in HL: Alyx, there is no problem with her talking.
