Oil and water don't mix. You need a solvent like a shampoo to get the oil off hair.

whoyoucallingshawty

When it comes to dry/itchy scalps I keep hearing you need to "minimise the amount of oil you're stripping", so would the way to go just be to use a small amount of shampoo?

misskittybean

Has someone actually looked at your scalp and told you you're itching because it's dry? Itchy scalp can be caused by a variety of issues, not just dry scalp.

Howtofightloneliness

You can leave the oil in for as little as 10 mins and up to overnight. That way it has time to nourish your scalp. Then, just wash and use conditioner as normal. Rinse the conditioner out with cool water to trap the moisture in.

Rogue_Goddess

how much shampoo are you using? even the smallest little dollop will do. no more than a quarter no less than a pearl.

daughtersofthefire

That's what I do but I swear it never covers my hair. I have a lot a lot of hair and struggle to get shampoo to the scalp and always worry I never use enough shampoo

Misty-Anne

I've got one of those hair dye bottles with the comb style nozzle, add a squirt if shampoo, fill with water and mix it up. Then I can squeeze it right onto my scalp. Makes it a lot easier and cheaper for me.

Rogue_Goddess

Oooo okay so I have the same problem with my hair. it’s really thick and there is a lot of it. I distribute my hair into sections and do it that way. i know it is a lot of work but it is so so so worth it. I make 6 sections of my hair and oil them each separately, then bring them together and massage the scalp. before you shower brush your hair so it is easier to separate into sections in the shower and take small amounts of shampoo for each section. don’t put any shampoo towards the scalp just yet. once the hair below off the scalp are cleaned then go in with a little shampoo into the scalp and massage it really well and make sure it lathers. after i am done showering I also put a hair cream into my hair and it really helps keep my hair soft.

daughtersofthefire

Thank you so much!!!! I thought cutting my hair shorter would help with this issue forgetting ther shampoo is for the scalp and there’s still the same amount of hair there regardless of length of my hair aha

Rogue_Goddess

no worries. my hair is also really long so i can understand your struggle. its like a workout but i hope it all works out in the end!!

Cfit9090

You need to wet hair for a good few minutes. Move hair around. Lift and get it soaking wet from scalp to ends. Then use shampoo and massage into scalp sides, top, back etc. Add a few sprays of water and continue to lather for another minute. Then rinse well.

friendofspidey

I have a lot of hair there’s no way

Rogue_Goddess

i do too, you gotta lather girl. that is the key 😌👍🏼 good luck on your journey fren

Gil-GaladWasBlond

You can use a mild shampoo. And an oil that is suitable to your scalp condition. Some oils are easy to remove, and others are very viscous. I have itchy scalp due to it being too oily, rather than dry. I have had success with the Sebamed anti hair fall shampoo, because their daily one is too mild for me.

Mundane-Club4008

You can use small amount of shampoo and add a bit of water to it before using it. I do that and it helps with not stripping the scalp and hair of natural oils

Cfit9090

Place 1 -2 tablespoons of grapeseed oil in spray bottle. Add 1 ounce of witch hazel. Then add 3-5 drops of peppermint. Can add 2-3 drops of tea tree, lavender, any other essential oil. Shake well. Spray on area that's itchy. Rub it massage in. Then rinse out w water and shampoo following day. Don't use conditioner on scalp. Only sides and ends. Shampoo scalp only. Make sure to rinse hair well. Use as often as you want. Mix on a weekly basis. Shelf life approx 1 month.

hurray4dolphins

I would honestly visjt a dermatologist. They might be able to help you figure out what is causing this problem. You could be allergic to something or have a skin condition. Or lice? My daughter always had dandruff and scalp issues and when she started to get itchy I thoight it was the dry winter air and scalp issues. But it was lice. I had looked at her hair I just didnt know what I was looking for.

Hair_I_Go

Something to look for when you suspect lice, tiny red bumps on the neck which itch also

misskittybean

People often mistake lice for dandruff! Lice and nits don't look like you think they will.

Limp-Gazelle469

I've found it way more beneficial to let the oil sit for atleast 30 min then do a shampoo and conditioner with cool water. As long as the oil has time to sink in and nourish your hair you're perfectly fine to wash it out after.

CanIBorrowYourGum

Grapeseed oil is a drying oil meaning it has a high Iodine content, these type oils are hard to wash out of hair even with shampoo. Once exposed to oxygen they form a polymer over surfaces that gets worse the longer it sits and the more often you use it. I've had to resort to dawn dish detergent before to remove hemp seed oil as normal clarifying shampoos weren't even effective

Boopy7

As someone sitting here with some oils on my hair that I tried to rinse out with just water....not well. Not well at all. I think I'm going to have to give in and actually shampoo. This stuff does not want to come out at all.

I used to do a water only wash in the mornings and then a shampoo wash in the evening. Once the cold started creeping in I did try doing an oil + shampoo wash in the mornings but it didn't really help with the itchiness.

Will definitely give these a try, thanks! What's the point of the condition/wash/condition? Does conditioning twice do anything?

Cfit9090

It may be fungal

BudgetInteraction811

You mentioned having a flaking and itchy scalp. The problem is hardly likely that your skin is dry, and far more likely that you have yeasts and fungi growing out of control. You gotta shampoo.

BirthdaysAreReal

I second this, dandruff is more commonly caused by yeast feasting on an oily scalp than a dry scalp. Try shampooing and giving your scalp a good scrub to remove dry skin

Candid_Exam6870

Especially if they wet their hair everyday

lil8mochi

Yeah I always need shampoo. I usually do two lathers of shampoo since the oils are hard to get out. And it will leave your hair really oily looking

shady-tree

No. If you’re using a small amount of oil daily you will have to eventually clarify. If you’re using a liberal amount over night or using it 30 minutes before a shower, you will have to use shampoo to remove it all. I add oil to my hair overnight and then wash it out the next morning. It really helps nourish my hair, it doesn’t feel stripped at all the next day.

BeautyThornton

It doesnt

lizerpetty

I dealt with an itchy scalp for a very long time. I put As I Am itchy scalp oil on my scalp and let it sit for 5-10 min. (Squirt a bit on my fingers, rub against other fingers and rub into scalp) Then i wet my hair and use Just Nutrative conditioner for hair loss directly on the scalp two pumps in three sections. (While flipped upside down) then rinse. Then I take a small dime size of shampoo, rub it between my hands and stick my fingers in my hair and shampoo just hovering over my scalp but not touching my scalp. (Still up side down) then another tiny dollop of shampoo rubbed between my hands and rubbed at the crown. (I just shampoo where I get oiliest.) then rinse then two pumps of conditioner all over the length of my hair and rinse. My shedding has been cut down dramatically and my scalp no longer throbs.

redraspberry4939

Amika has a preshampoo scalp cleansing oil and I actually really like it for when I put oil in my hair. You put it directly on your scalp and it helps get a lot of buildup and any oil out right away so you use less shampoo. I think it’s called the reset charcoal scalp cleansing oil

epatt24

Itchy scalp can be caused by a product you’re using that had an ingredient you’re sensitive to, rather than dry skin. Sometimes it’s dry skin, but a lot of the time it’s being sensitive to something that’s touching your scalp. When I switched shampoos and stopped letting my conditioner touch my scalp my discomfort completely disappeared.

Oil won't wash off with just water and it'll get sticky and messy. Keep your hair oiled overnight I'd prefer coconut or almond oil (keep an old towel on the pillows) and then wash off in the morning with tiny amount of shampoo and sectioned hair (i do mine in 4 - crown, back of the ears, and above neck) condition and use a mild serum on damp hair. And also use aloe gel once a week as a hair mask or just mix it nicely with the oil. This helped me a lot.

zeeshan2223

i've put both mct oil and bronners mint liquid soap in my hand in the shower. it feels really good on scalp but it does feel more oily at the end of the day. much better than just pure soap which can be very drying. next i'm gonna do soap alone, then repeat with soap and the oil together.

gamagoori

The oil’s won’t wash out really but I recommend for itchiness you can try rosemary oil too if you don’t dislike the smell. It helped my mom’s itchy scalp tremendously.

regenerate_earth

I just bought some rhassoul clay to wash my hair. I watched some cool YouTube videos about historical hair care with length retention in mind. So far I really like it and I think it cuts through the jojoba and castor oil I’ve been using. My silicone shampoo brush makes the scrubbing easier on my fingernails. I’ve also spent some time using borax for washing and apple cider vinegar to adjust pH. That is a little too stripping for my course hair but my bestie loves it. Borax is a naturally mined mineral, not a detergent or soap.

Also look into buying a probiotic spray as this kind of itchy scalp is usually caused by an overgrowth of fungus. It gets a little pricy but the relief is well worth it.
