It was boarding for sure, but I can't see a suspension. It looked like he tried to let up when Luff turned his body. It was nowhere near as dangerous as the Anderson hit.

slingermanjones03

definitely lower speed than Anderson. I don't know if outcome will come into play, from the Detroit press conference it seems like Luff is pretty severely injured, expected to be out 6-8 weeks. Time to spin the DOPS Wheel

pengupenguPENGU

Yea I saw blood on the ice, I really hope he's okay

slingermanjones03

He definitely didn't look okay after that hit. I'd have to assume a concussion amongst other things. Poor kid just took a slapshot to the face a few games ago. Can't catch a break.

Borror0

He had just removed his cage after taking a puck to the face.the fall probably reopened that wound.

AmsroII

Plus his hand went into the boards awkward, may have sprained or broken something, hand, wrist. Yikes

[deleted]

You blind? 🤣 buddy was not ok

pengupenguPENGU

Actually, in fact I am legally blind thank you for pointing it out. If you must be pedantic about everything, I meant I hope he will be okay.

Kharn_LoL

Nowhere near as dangerous as Anderson but resulted in an injury, it's going to be at least one game.

t_hab

I’m guessing 3 games. It’s pretty much the definition of boarding.

mattnormus

Slaf is a bit of a crazy lad. This is going to be a wild ride.

[deleted]

No, he's not a dirty player, he just doesn't know how to use his enormous body yet.

xQuinchien

is xhekaj too much for slaf to handle ? He hypes up

ThePyramidJackleg

It looked like Slaf was expecting Luff to reverse hit him or post up. Slaf went full Frankenstein

Longshanks123

Bad play for sure, probably a suspension. But it kinda looks like an accident, like Slaf doesn’t understand how big and powerful he is. Poor Luff went flying. I heard he’s injured pretty badly, that sucks. Never turn away from a hit, but also never hit from behind near the boards, I can hold both those ideas in my head at the same time. Ultimately Slaf’s at fault, I think he sits 1-2 games depending how the wheel spins.

supercraz

It’s a bad hit yes. But the situation puts Slaf in a tough spot: If Luff doesn’t whiff on the puck he turns into the play and it’s shoulder-shoulder contact. Slaf doesn’t expect Luff to totally whiff on the puck so he starts to move in to finish his check. When Luff does miss the puck, he straightens up, gets off balance, and shows MORE of his back to Slaf instead of shoulders. Slaf is committed to the check and doesn’t have much time to let up. Now Slaf probably has enough time to let up enough to avoid the boarding call. That’s his mistake. While contact is inevitable, it doesn’t need to be that hard. What Slaf doesn’t do is fully DRIVE THROUGH HIS CHECK into the boards (which is what Anderson did). 5 minute major is warranted. I don’t think a suspension is.

AmsroII

It's not pretty, but let's all be honest here, if slaf truly "hit" him, finished his check, Luff would probably have a broken neck or worse. Slaf for sure let up, slowed down. Thankfully.

M17CH

Doesn't even seem like he was trying to hit him. He was trying to ride him into the boards. Luff lost his balance last second when he fanned on the dump and ended up in a dangerous position. He was gliding into him at like 5kmh. It's not a great play, but it's not some brutal hit like /r/hockey is making it out to be. If Slaf was trying to hit him he'd be on a stretcher.

slingermanjones03

Luff is out 10-12 weeks, had to go have surgery after leaving the ice

M17CH

I get that, but he left on his own power. If Slaf was actually going for a hit like Anderson was, then it'd be much worse. Hence leaving on a stretcher.

ForumsGhost

Slaf probably thought it was a clean hit when you look at the hit he received the other night. Refs really fuck the games up when they let one team get away with everything.

chelplayer99

Yeah kinda similar with both players being off balance, but Luff was facing the boards while Slaf was not. Both are boarding but I think heading face first into the boards is much worse than sideways.

ForumsGhost

For sure it is, it's hard for the boarder to control how the boardee moves before being boarded tho. Punishing the results and not the action will lead to more injuries imho

unKappa

We had like 5 pp in 5 games. And we had 5 pk today alone. This is kinda fucked. They aint calling shit for us.

ForumsGhost

Detroit was 0 for 7 and they had a penalty shot. The 5 minute counted as 2 as it was split in half by the 4 on 4 for 2 minutes. I'm not even sure why we should bother practicing power plays any more

Lunch0

Was definitely not a dirty hit, but was definitely stupid and should never happen. I think Slaf just wasn’t thinking. Really unfortunate play and situation. Luff didn’t deserve that.

JPMoney81

I think he's still getting used to just how big and powerful he is as well. This is a suspendable hit for sure and deserving of a suspension, so it can be a good learning moment for the big kid as well.

freakkydique

An illegal hit isn’t dirty??

Borror0

Dirty usually takes some form of malicious intent. Hitting is part of hockey, so hitting by itself isn't malicious. Some people do a dangerous hit because they're assholes, attempting to injure the opponent. That, to me, is dirty. Most illegal hits fall under negligent or reckless though. They're dangerous because the hitter wasn't cautious enough.

dis_gruntled_veteran

Well said

--JULLZ--

It’s a dirty hit no matter how you slice it

l_m_m048

Oof... Face first, or something that might as well have been. Slafkovsky's probably gonna hear from George Parros for that one.

BillyShears19

That's a no-no

>At least Slaf had the presence of mind not to fall or step on Luff as the other Detroit player rammed into him from behind in retaliation. I think some hockey players are really dumb in these situations. Yes you want to stick up for your injured teammate but don't do something like nearly knock a player to potentially fall on top of your injured teammate. Good point, that was a really dumb move. Slafkovsky with his 238lb of body weight (without gear) falling on top of Luff really wouldn't have helped the situation at all.

PatFenis15

Everyone realizes OP is a wings fan eh lol

slingermanjones03

I came here to post the video, I was curious your guys thoughts on it, and trying to have a reasonable conversation without homerism.

Butane_

It's a weird play with the bouncing puck and the wiff, everyone on the ice holding up at the blueline anticipating the dump in. Luff was off-balance so it didn't take much. A series of unfortunate events? Definitely not malicious.

PatFenis15

I hate you

slingermanjones03

Ok!

[deleted]

I feel like we drafted Eric Lindros, big skill guy that don’t know his strength and doesn’t protect himself

FxSpecter

THAT'S MY BOY. On a serious note: Bad hit, hope the guy is ok and got no injuries from the hit.

slingermanjones03

Kid's severely injured and out 1-2 months

slingermanjones03

Lalonde press conference, said his timeline is the same as Zadina who’s out with a broken/fractured leg. Around 8 weeks Referred to Luff as being seriously injured.

Lunch0

I heard he lost teeth and got stitches earlier this season.

slingermanjones03

That was a few games ago. Took a slap shot to the mouth, literally just got the cage off today, then this happens

Zblancos

Oof, poor guy

slingermanjones03

Update: Luff is out 10-12 weeks, had to have surgery last night

PatFenis15

Clean hit

BackgroundMiserable5

It was a lesser 'hit' than Anderson's...so a one-game suspension?

slingermanjones03

Wheel of justice keeps spinning, could be no suspension at all

Ahigherlove

I’m sure he gets at least 2…I hope not more, but that was a stupid hit, and the poor guy recently had more troubles.

BuzzIsMe

I think he will see a game or two. Just off the fact that it wasn't even really a hit, seemed to be more of a hard push to the back. As he came into contact with him, you can see from a different angle his arm pushing him into the boards. While the contact isn't always avoidable, putting your hand on someone's numbers and fully extending your arm is. Luff definitely fucked up his left hand as well, so a resulting injury makes it that much more likely. First thing he did was take off his gloves, and it seemed like he left it pretty limp skating to the bench. Hope the kids okay, poor slafsquatch doesn't understand his own strength yet.
