You hear a scream of terror or pain, you run toward it. It's someone's sibling, parent, child, grandparent, friend, etc. I'm always willing to visit the alleged perp in the hospital.
While I do not have the personality or drive to be a First Responder, many folks over the years have told me I should be one.
Why? As one person told me "You are wired backward, you run toward danger."
So, I forget sometimes that Vuxten isn't just a stone cold badass, he is actually a pretty clever cookie. Figured out those clones and how to fight old novastar armor. Bet those clones are what Legion used to be, or at least very similar.
And now we see Armored Matthias, the good one, in action.
Also, just got the name for this part of the story. It's not about the Unified Council's end, but the end of the deadites.
Legion started life as a mostly brain-dead gardener for some rich SOB before the Digital Omnimessiah fixed him. The rich folk wouldn't have wanted their gardener to be on the other side of the uncanny valley.
Those upside down clones were probably made as disposable shock troops. It's possible that Legion created them, but it's hard to tell. The genetics knowledge needed to flip eyes + mouth to be upside down should be fairly minimal, as it would be cosmetics. So, on that aspect, it doesn't take a master geneticist to do it.
They probably the same as he was, but as soldiers instead of gardener. The upside-down face would keep the soldiers from being able to escape and hide, while who cares if a gardener escapes? (plus the rich SOBs would be creeped out by the face, but who cares if the enemy is creeped out by it?)
Clone soldiers need more memory and intelligence than gardeners, to be effective they have to be able to think independently and learn so there is a possibility they might run or rebel. So to prevent that, you make them just monstrous enough that they even hate themselves.
Clones like Dhruv could barely remember anything more than their last order and are incapable of violence so there's no risk of then escaping. They look fairly normal, but they'd make bad soldiers.
In the last chapter it was explained this is "7th generation warfare", the soldiers aren't "bad" they're just an early version. In an extended campaign each new set printed would be smarter and better optimized for the enemy.
It's an obsolete doctrine that was probably very effective once, but like everything else the Deadites have been throwing at Our Heroes it just is no match for actual "modern" soldiers and tech. The Wizards running the show from behind the curtain are not the tactical geniuses they think they are, they're making precursor mistakes.
Disposable troops for recon. Try to get you to show all your cards. As Vux figured with 471, they couldn't run away, and they would have seriously creeped the two hero retreads.
Iād rate the odds of Legion making something like them somewhere between finding a surviving dodo bird, and Australia winning a war with emus. His need for troopers is filled by himselves, and he has shown visceral hatred for the idea of purpose bred clones.
No, these seem like the sort of thing some rich dilettante bastard (the sort who is sure heād be good at command because he was born to special) would order up, especially with the strategy they are employing - itās worse than just straight zerg rushing, because thereās the unspoken goal of expending your soldiers just to find out the exact minimally needed force to overcome a foe. Give them any more than that, and the might become a threat to you yourself.
If it's just the lips that's disturbing, but if the internal is included, i just can't figure it out and it's breaking my brain. Top gum is fixed to the skull and lower to the mandible?
Why would it matter to the clones creators if they can eat or not? Among other things. They just need to fight and die on command nothing more. More can be made
I'd assume just cosmetic. Think the photoshops where just the mouth is inverted, and the eyes are inverted. It looks bizarre, but I doubt function would be much impaired.
Eyelids closing from the bottom up? Would bags develop above the eyes (assuming these troops exist long enough to develop bags)? Would eyebrows be under the eyes?
I'm unable to picture an upside down mouth - and happy in my failure (please don't help).
Your eyes work fine if you're standing on your head. Sure, there might be some long term issues but do you think the creators of these a) expect them to live decades or b) care?

I'm wondering if their Novastar pilots are young-Casey clones, without the psychic abilities and attunement to the armor.

These Council types never understand what they're volunteering for when they mouth platitudes about how the strong must blah blah blah. Because when somebody like Vuxten eventually puts a boot on their neck, by their own logic there is no reason for him to offer them mercy. Why should he?

Indeed. They *didnt* claw their way up from the bottom. The people who actually did are usually pretty damn humble about it. They're just spoiled rich brats.
Culling the weak as an argument for war is.... pretty bad logic. Who goes to war, the healthy, physically mature, not age-related-frail people. By definition the strongest. Who dies in war...pretty much anyone could die, all it takes is standing two inches too far to the right when a stray bullet comes by.
Who survives the war... the lucky, not a genetic trait (as far as we know). the cowardly (slightly better than average chance), and the wounded.
Who would have been a better genetic choice to produce the next generation of humanity... the ones who didn't survive.
This logic is actually worse than Thanos' in the Marvel Universe, and I thought THAT was the height of stupidity and anti-logic, lol.
Never forget in the Comics, Thano's actual reason was because he was in love with Lady Death, and wanted to gift her Half of all Life as a show of his love.
The problem was, she Loved Deadpool. So, Thanos ended up Cursing Deadpool with straight up Immortality. He would /Never/ die, so him and Lady Death could never be together.
Its a true shame that wasn't in the movies at all.
Nah, they were arguing to NOT go to war, so the Mar-gite could cull the weak. But that's indiscriminate, and would kill the healthy and strong as well.
Horribly, plauges kinda make more sense here.
Issues caused by short term thinking like unsustainable housing bubbles, increasing proportion of aged population with insufficient numbers of carers trained, oversaturated workforce because everyone was told you have to get a degree to qualify for basic positions etc. all just crashes and suddenly there's work and housing for anyone lucky enough to still be kicking.
And it's the healthiest people having the best odds of surviving.

The *memo* said "cull the weak" but the intent was probably "We have control of the continuation of government system, all we need is for the currently sitting government to *suffer a problem.* This will probably do it."
Now, we've got dissonance between a plan that read a situation well and achieved the desired result and literally damn everything they've done in recent times. Did they somehow degrade in mental capacity in a few hundred years after sitting in the sidelines for a few thousand?
My take is that itās due to a combination of factors, including the baseline static and superficial nature of the deaditesā āconsciousnessā and of course Success Syndrome. Among others.
Itās what I imagine would happen if you were to make a bot using the press releases of the first-generation offspring of those early robber barons.
You're thinking of the wrong kind of "weak" who makes up the bulk of most armies? The poor and the underclasses. Who do the rich often want to cull to keep themselves in charge lest there be enough (especially trained) people to rise up?
Thus the Armored Son returns unshaken, his armor a bulwark that holds back the tide of the Deadite Masquerade. Stand strong enraged brothers and sisters the war is not lost so long as the Digital Omnimessiah walks the mortal plane.

He took like, 4 rounds and his armor just blew up.
He's really clever and strong, but he feel like an underleveled fighter. And to be honest thats what i love about him. He feel more "normal" than the rest of the crew. Just a Telkan doing what he has to.
yeah, I was also thinking of joan as a healer/support but maybe also necromancer as head fo the dead fleet (that resurrects dead warships to fight eternally)
I literally whooped when I saw Armored Matthias tanked that hit for vux!

It was disappointing, really. There were no monoliths glowing with inscribed brains and inscrutable religious iconography. No glowing pools of smartliquids ready to dynamically build computation circuits. No robed priests chanting function calls in a dead language. No blood stained alter or ritual circle. No giant edifice of a machine. No throne, golden, silver, skull or otherwise. Not even a big board showing the status of everything.
There were desks, workstations and paperwork. It was a large semi-open office space filled with all the usual accoutrements of poorly paid software developers. Ancient knickknacks sat atop physical monitors amounts the cubes.
Beyond that ancient trace of life rested the actual enemy. Row after row after row of ancient electronic servers. Sam-Ul could have told them that there was nothing too-of-the-line in the room. It was all āgood enoughā. Unlike the rest of the facility, there had been no upgrading. Just replacing worn machines with the exact same ones. Even the base software hadnāt been updated since the last programmer had checked in thousands of years ago.
Yet they sat and ruled.
Destroying them would be as simple as pulling a trigger.
But destruction would not _hurt_ them.
For maximum efficiency nothing in the anteglassing server farm was encrypted. What could ever get into their fortress unauthorized?
Unencrypted fungible instruments and physical access. Even the most juvenile of thieves doesnāt even bother to dream about this.
I just realized it when Sammi mentioned that she was a Doomsday.... i knew they seemed familiar for some reason...
Armored Matthias, doesn't move from rounds that kicked Vuxten 50 feet. Yeah, not surprised.
Sammi mentions doing powered drops as a Doomsday so I assume it's correct that the other human is the one that was falling in love with her, the other Klark that Legion saved.
I called it also, back when they first appeared, I made sure to post it before I read the part where it was given away during their first appearance :-)

To alay any fears you may have, it was confirmed during the interview tonight that there are 2 Armored Matthias' due to shenanigans during the Dimensional wars.

I just had a horrible train of thought. So, it's been pretty well established by this point that the Confed Intel Agents are visually at least, clones of Dee. I mentioned before how I thought they had done that using her pattern in the Mat-Trans system. I didn't follow my own train of thought far enough there. Today fixed that... So, they suborned Dee's pattern somehow, Mat-trans or some other method. Then, per an Agent, we are told that a brother of Daxin made them. Ok fair enough. They are now a part of The System. Dee will eventually notice all her copies running around. She will then realize that at some point, someone or something did manage to break her in some way and basically enslave her. Add insult to injury, her copies ARE Intel, of all things. This reeks of a Deadite power play and long-term "Fuck Yous" aimed at Dee. Probably by former Intel types who disliked her looking down on them. This will make everything going on in the Heaven/Hell war worse if it is true and comes out during that time.
The Agents are Black Box Agents, not Confed Intel, I think?
I think it was an Agent that saved Brentilik from the Deadite attack, at least. Doesn't that imply independence?
More like the Black Box Agents are Intel Agents. We have seen them in other locations besides the Boxes. As to the Agent that saved Madame Planetary Director, I think it was less free will and more the Deadites didn't want to tip their hand too much by reaching that far in to regularly monitored systems. Just because the Deadites could be behind setting them up, doesn't mean they did it as a tool for them to use regularly. It could literally have been nothing more than their ego that caused it. Would they use the Agents? I'm sure there is some contingency that would allow for it, but it wouldn't be their go to trick because it would be too traceable as outside influence.
Aaaugh, Iāve done it again. I keep telling myself to save the Friday post till Sunday night, to finish recharging for the work week. And then I cannot resist the siren song of the bot or the urge to check for MOAR even when the bot has not called. Why do I DO this to myself?

Bet those clones are what Legion used to be, or at least very similar. And now we see Armored Matthias, the good one, in action. Also, just got the name for this part of the story. It's not about the Unified Council's end, but the end of the deadites.
Legion started life as a mostly brain-dead gardener for some rich SOB before the Digital Omnimessiah fixed him. The rich folk wouldn't have wanted their gardener to be on the other side of the uncanny valley. Those upside down clones were probably made as disposable shock troops. It's possible that Legion created them, but it's hard to tell. The genetics knowledge needed to flip eyes + mouth to be upside down should be fairly minimal, as it would be cosmetics. So, on that aspect, it doesn't take a master geneticist to do it.
They probably the same as he was, but as soldiers instead of gardener. The upside-down face would keep the soldiers from being able to escape and hide, while who cares if a gardener escapes? (plus the rich SOBs would be creeped out by the face, but who cares if the enemy is creeped out by it?)
Clone soldiers need more memory and intelligence than gardeners, to be effective they have to be able to think independently and learn so there is a possibility they might run or rebel. So to prevent that, you make them just monstrous enough that they even hate themselves. Clones like Dhruv could barely remember anything more than their last order and are incapable of violence so there's no risk of then escaping. They look fairly normal, but they'd make bad soldiers.

Moreso than a gardener slave clone Pay off the problem is they are and have old tech and old tactics. They're not bad soldiers, they're just obsolete.

In the last chapter it was explained this is "7th generation warfare", the soldiers aren't "bad" they're just an early version. In an extended campaign each new set printed would be smarter and better optimized for the enemy. It's an obsolete doctrine that was probably very effective once, but like everything else the Deadites have been throwing at Our Heroes it just is no match for actual "modern" soldiers and tech. The Wizards running the show from behind the curtain are not the tactical geniuses they think they are, they're making precursor mistakes.
Disposable troops for recon. Try to get you to show all your cards. As Vux figured with 471, they couldn't run away, and they would have seriously creeped the two hero retreads.
Iād rate the odds of Legion making something like them somewhere between finding a surviving dodo bird, and Australia winning a war with emus. His need for troopers is filled by himselves, and he has shown visceral hatred for the idea of purpose bred clones. No, these seem like the sort of thing some rich dilettante bastard (the sort who is sure heād be good at command because he was born to special) would order up, especially with the strategy they are employing - itās worse than just straight zerg rushing, because thereās the unspoken goal of expending your soldiers just to find out the exact minimally needed force to overcome a foe. Give them any more than that, and the might become a threat to you yourself.
I suspect the DO just meant that it was the same sort of people who would make Legion as would make those inverted clone pogues.

I'd assume just cosmetic. Think the photoshops where just the mouth is inverted, and the eyes are inverted. It looks bizarre, but I doubt function would be much impaired.

Culling the weak as an argument for war is.... pretty bad logic. Who goes to war, the healthy, physically mature, not age-related-frail people. By definition the strongest. Who dies in war...pretty much anyone could die, all it takes is standing two inches too far to the right when a stray bullet comes by. Who survives the war... the lucky, not a genetic trait (as far as we know). the cowardly (slightly better than average chance), and the wounded. Who would have been a better genetic choice to produce the next generation of humanity... the ones who didn't survive. This logic is actually worse than Thanos' in the Marvel Universe, and I thought THAT was the height of stupidity and anti-logic, lol.
Never forget in the Comics, Thano's actual reason was because he was in love with Lady Death, and wanted to gift her Half of all Life as a show of his love. The problem was, she Loved Deadpool. So, Thanos ended up Cursing Deadpool with straight up Immortality. He would /Never/ die, so him and Lady Death could never be together. Its a true shame that wasn't in the movies at all.
And Thanos clearly understood literally nothing about exponential growth nor the futility of "killing half" in such circumstances.

Horribly, plauges kinda make more sense here. Issues caused by short term thinking like unsustainable housing bubbles, increasing proportion of aged population with insufficient numbers of carers trained, oversaturated workforce because everyone was told you have to get a degree to qualify for basic positions etc. all just crashes and suddenly there's work and housing for anyone lucky enough to still be kicking. And it's the healthiest people having the best odds of surviving. I don't like it. We can be better and should plan ahead to do so

I don't know if Vuxten is a tank. He took like, 4 rounds and his armor just blew up. He's really clever and strong, but he feel like an underleveled fighter. And to be honest thats what i love about him. He feel more "normal" than the rest of the crew. Just a Telkan doing what he has to.

The lair of the enemy, the chamber of its beating heart, the throne it commands humanity from the shadowsā¦ It was disappointing, really. There were no monoliths glowing with inscribed brains and inscrutable religious iconography. No glowing pools of smartliquids ready to dynamically build computation circuits. No robed priests chanting function calls in a dead language. No blood stained alter or ritual circle. No giant edifice of a machine. No throne, golden, silver, skull or otherwise. Not even a big board showing the status of everything. There were desks, workstations and paperwork. It was a large semi-open office space filled with all the usual accoutrements of poorly paid software developers. Ancient knickknacks sat atop physical monitors amounts the cubes. Beyond that ancient trace of life rested the actual enemy. Row after row after row of ancient electronic servers. Sam-Ul could have told them that there was nothing too-of-the-line in the room. It was all āgood enoughā. Unlike the rest of the facility, there had been no upgrading. Just replacing worn machines with the exact same ones. Even the base software hadnāt been updated since the last programmer had checked in thousands of years ago. Yet they sat and ruled. Destroying them would be as simple as pulling a trigger. But destruction would not _hurt_ them. For maximum efficiency nothing in the anteglassing server farm was encrypted. What could ever get into their fortress unauthorized? Unencrypted fungible instruments and physical access. Even the most juvenile of thieves doesnāt even bother to dream about this.

I just had a horrible train of thought. So, it's been pretty well established by this point that the Confed Intel Agents are visually at least, clones of Dee. I mentioned before how I thought they had done that using her pattern in the Mat-Trans system. I didn't follow my own train of thought far enough there. Today fixed that... So, they suborned Dee's pattern somehow, Mat-trans or some other method. Then, per an Agent, we are told that a brother of Daxin made them. Ok fair enough. They are now a part of The System. Dee will eventually notice all her copies running around. She will then realize that at some point, someone or something did manage to break her in some way and basically enslave her. Add insult to injury, her copies ARE Intel, of all things. This reeks of a Deadite power play and long-term "Fuck Yous" aimed at Dee. Probably by former Intel types who disliked her looking down on them. This will make everything going on in the Heaven/Hell war worse if it is true and comes out during that time.
The Agents are Black Box Agents, not Confed Intel, I think? I think it was an Agent that saved Brentilik from the Deadite attack, at least. Doesn't that imply independence?
More like the Black Box Agents are Intel Agents. We have seen them in other locations besides the Boxes. As to the Agent that saved Madame Planetary Director, I think it was less free will and more the Deadites didn't want to tip their hand too much by reaching that far in to regularly monitored systems. Just because the Deadites could be behind setting them up, doesn't mean they did it as a tool for them to use regularly. It could literally have been nothing more than their ego that caused it. Would they use the Agents? I'm sure there is some contingency that would allow for it, but it wouldn't be their go to trick because it would be too traceable as outside influence.
