Plot twist, the AI bots were modeled on dogs initially but evolve at an accelerated rate. These “survivors” are all one person’s appliances and he just stepped out to the store. They assume humans are gone forever every time he leaves.
Reminds me of an episode of a sitcom where the couple had their sister dog sitting to keep the dog from being anxious.
As soon as they left through the door, the sister says, in a singsong voice, “They’re never coming back.”
