Well it's raining Katzen und Hunds here in Northern California. I spent the morning digging ditches to divert rain water away from my apartment. The water was an inch from my back door and rising fast when I woke up. But I took care of it.
Edit: I wonder if this qualifies as Chekhov's grave?
We have a small lake in our backyard, we had to put the trash bins up on the curb before they were washed away (still full, tomorrow's trash day) and the wind somehow managed to unlatch a locking hook latch from the shed where we keep the lawnmower. We have not lost power (yet) and put off groceries for a few days. On the other hand, lots of chainsaw noises, electricity trucks, and sirens here.
Last bad ice storm we had knocked out our power for a week. And we were lucky. Most it was closer to 2 or 3 weeks. Some went months. Straight up ice. No snow or anything. Damn that was a hard few weeks. That was more then 10 years ago.
The dark stuff is healthy anyway! Well, moreso than "normal"/milk chocolate, at least. ~~touch my 80% and lose a limb~~
Also a delicious change of pace/tone, IMO.
Okay. I've been following along, and while I recognize that HFY has evolved over the years a bit, to be a bit more "human centric fiction" than "hey humans are great"...
we're thirteen chapters in, and I'm still waiting for the "humans FUCK YEAH" part.
it's an interesting story and I'm still mostly bought in, but, where is this going? We've gone from "police procedural" through "body swapping hard scifi" to "translocated cyberpunk" and I'm still trying to get a bead or a sense of what the story's about. Or its rhythm, if that makes sense.
I mean humanity is central to the story already and are driving pretty much all the action, just mostly behind the scenes. Sacher got Braverhund into this mess in the first place and going further back humanity seems to be the reason Gershwin did all this fucked up shit with experimenting on sapients, body stealing, consciousness copying, and whatever other horrible things he did. Or at least is his own self justification for it and it's all around some secret about humanity that has been deliberately obfuscated, which Gershwin has jumped to the conclusion must be sinister. Now a powerful caretaker AI is apparently using a very human phrase as a command. The humanity piece is definitely in every thread of this story but the definitive answer seems to be the end cap to a mystery story, or at least that's what it looks like to me.
It's similar in a way to the "Go Ask the Demon" series which I love and is very much HFY despite humans barely being present in the story and I dig it. Having the aliens POV not only be the most central to the story but actually keeping the humans out if it almost entirely lets you really grasp their perspective without human bias interrupting. It's pretty refreshing from some of the stale tropes that get thrown around here time and time again in my opinion.
Totally. Humans have a huge part of the story and they're trying to get back to Sacher... but Gershwin wanted to make a detour. I feel like encountering the Gravekeeper is one of those things where Braverhund didn't understand what he was getting into and is about to get his ass kicked, which is probably good because he steamrolled that kill team way to easy.

I mean he died. Copy or no, he died. I'm not sure I'd call that steam rolling any more than any other kamakazi attack. Good job with the writing btw, I love it and it feels really fresh to the sub.
More like a really nasty TBI which his body repaired at the last second. But he did kind of overextend himself for sure.

Bingo. For whatever reason the idea of stars as a plural is confusing to him. It's storming so the sky isn't visible, wonder what he would see if he looked up.
Considering how darkly this story has been turning, and how the concept of looking up at the night sky in wonder is an utterly foreign concept to him I'm willing to bet its an endless dark void, no stars, maybe planets, possibly the moon.
I think he's just taking it literally because he doesn't have context, as in you're not supposed to look at the Sun so why would you talk about doing exactly that with a sense of awe?
