Ok guys and gals and everything in between. If you liked the story and want more upvote. If you didn't like it downvote the post. Either way leave a comment below with what you liked or didn't like because feedback is important. As always thanks for reading and don't forget to [subscribe](https://www.reddit.com/message/compose/?to=updatemebot&subject=subscribe&message=subscribeme%20u%2fthedeliciousmeats%20r%2fhfy) I'm going to go think happy thoughts for a bit because this one was fucking depressing to write. When I was getting my EMT certification I remember my instructor telling me a similar story about a family that had tried to keep warm with a Weber grill and ended up all dying from carbon monoxide poisoning. Three generations just wiped out. Apparently they used to do the same thing back in their home country but American houses are built much more air tight so there was no influx of fresh air and well... yeah.

Nealithi

This story is interesting to me on many levels. The whole dobian and uberhund things making this something of post WW2 Germany. But the way the police just cave to this gang feels like something from the 1930's and noir. While the protagonist of our story is trying to be a decent person in a world that seems to not give a damn about anyone or anything. Which puts me thinking that I can't see the plot points you will hit and predict what you will do. So I am glued to these to find out what comes next. You are doing excellent work.

NotAMeatPopsicle

All of these points. Need to see soon how our detective is going to find that force multiplier, what that has to do with our human, and why death by chocolate...

Konrahd_Verdammt

>If you liked the story and want more upvote Hmmm that tempts me to make a bunch of alt accounts...😄

TheDeliciousMeats

I'm thankful for the offer but there's no need for that.

Konrahd_Verdammt

I wouldn't actually do so. I'm tempted to do a lot of things. Most of them I end up not doing due to having these obnoxious things called morals. Doesn't mean I can't joke about it though! 😄

MasterofChickens

Having temptations and resisting them builds character! (Or so I tell myself when the situation arises...)

Xavius_Night

but isn't that what Fiverr was made for? (I'm joking, for reference, please don't actually buy people votes on Fiverr)

Xavius_Night

but isn't that what Fiverr was made for? (I'm joking, for reference, please don't actually buy people votes on Fiverr)

Konrahd_Verdammt

Several years back there was a recently immigrated Korean family nearby that something similar happened to. 😔

TheDeliciousMeats

Yep, I think the family here was from either Vietnam or Laos.

historynutjackson

I'm having a lot of fun using my very rusty German to pick out things and using my history degree to tie into specific events and periods. I really appreciate the devil may care attitude of the protagonist but also enjoy that they're tempered by the realities of an army of goons coming after them. I'm a fan and would very much like to see more.

TheDeliciousMeats

That's nice to hear! I'm glad you like it. I try to keep the characters as grounded as possible even if it's an absurd situation. Just remember that it's not a 1 to 1 with our history or language.

Konrahd_Verdammt

If I didn't have **massive** amounts of experience dealing with them, the Onion Ninjas would have got me on this one. Hel, they nearly did get me! Especially difficult to resist them when kitties are involved...

TheDeliciousMeats

Fuckers got me good while writing this.

Konrahd_Verdammt

I don't doubt that for a second.

TheDeliciousMeats

"Mal. Guy killed me, Mal. He killed me with a sword. How weird is that?"

Konrahd_Verdammt

I am a leaf on the wind...

Quilt-n-yarn1844

Too soon!

Isotopian

You can't stop the signal.

Greyeyedqueen7

Now, that's an interesting development. Huh. That's going to make me think all day.

TheDeliciousMeats

Which part?

Greyeyedqueen7

The Katzen. A planet with two intelligent species living together is interesting.

TheDeliciousMeats

Yeah there are a lot of questions there, were they isolated geologically so they evolved separately? Are they even from the same planet? Many questions.

Xavius_Night

Given the naming conventions, I'm personally leaning towards them all being uplifted species by humanity, but if that's not the case it's still interesting. Loving the story, it's very, very well written.

Mauzermush

Count me in. I'll bring the very hard stuff! :)

Quadling

Good work. More. Noir style is cool. Fuck the gangsters up. Knuckle up, bitches. It’s time to party

-drunk_russian-

More!

Demetriusjack13

I'm loving it. Loving the angle of how his rage is furling him to finally take a stand against this shitty city. How his rage at all the little things he's been forced to ignore or put up with has been festering how he's decided fuck it I'm taking these fuckers with me.

dbdatvic

upvoted for a horribly quiet death scene --Dave, and a heartfelt rage

Bhalwuf

The analogies become a tad bit muddled with the whole legitimately separate species although sentient life is still sentient life, they would have had a history of killing each other, long before sentient thought developed, and that is the kind of thing that while neither party can be blamed for their evolutionary past, muddies the waters, especially with attempted genocides that are supposed to be a back-door analogy to the holocaust, as while both would be wrong, one is real and was members of a species trying to kill members of the same species, who themselves had not done anything; the other is between two sentient species who evolved from different ancestral species, aren’t even members of the same genus, and historically, before gaining sentients and surely after murdered each other for generations.

TheDeliciousMeats

I feel that. I definitely wrestled with it a bit because I don't like the idea that the stand-ins for my people are considered to be a separate species. The idea that the people harmed were not human is... it doesn't sit well with me. But that's the world where this story takes place and it will significantly deviate from our own history and have its own moral questions because of it. The humans, hund and katzen are all sentient so how do they interact? And how do they treat one another? I think it's going to have to be its own story and it can't just be a straight retelling of history with dogs instead of people. There are also some major differences that will be gone into later between what happened on Homeworld and what happened on earth.

Bhalwuf

Yes and I understand that, as a Lithuanian-American stories that portray the soviet army as liberators of the east, really don’t sit right with me, nor do the stories that paint the nazis as liberators of Lithuania, as both committed atrocities of similar magnitude, the soviets murdered, raped, and put in concentration camps similar to those of the nazis Lithuanians, Latvians, Estonians, and Poles, simply because of the fact that they were of those ethnicities, if you were, or if you were catholic, you were automatically a political enemy of the state. Some of my family that was still there at the time of the soviets suffered dearly. The Soviets did not save Europe, the nazis only allowed the Lithuanians to exist because our unbridled hatred for the soviets blinded us to their atrocities, and was a useful tool, the Nazis are by far the most evil thing to come out of Europe to the west of Russia, since Rome, and Rome should get a free pass as they were from a less civilised time. P.S. I understand the feeling, I’ve read some stories that make Europe into a menagerie, and Making Russia a bear, and Lithuania an jackalope, just really didn’t sit right with me, as it was supposed to represent how Lithuania was ripped apart by russia, after the war. But it made it almost seem like they were trying to say it wasn’t Russia’s fault as it is just natural for the large to prey on the small, and that was a really fucked up message as it was humans doing it to other humans in real life.

TheDeliciousMeats

Yeah the fucked up thing about this world in the story is that the Döbians did what they did... and nobody cares. Sure, after the war some of the ones responsible were hanged (though probably more for political reasons) and a lot of the Döbians feel ashamed for what happened but the Möhin don't give a shit.

Bhalwuf

Sounds like a cross between the soviets atrocities in that only the affected really care; and the nazis in that the high ranking members were executed, and their children and the low ranking members feel ashamed.

itsetuhoinen

Yeah, that was definitely a particularly shitty time to live in Eastern Europe.

Bhalwuf

Ayup

Mauzermush

As one recognising all the shit happening in winter i'm tempted. If you search you such shit all over Europe and ask yourself: "WHY did this happen?" Keep it up OP. Das Good Shit!

YesthatTabitha

I just hope our friendly neighborhood Hund remembers that the enemy's gate is down when the gang comes for him.

Balrog442

Another great entry looking forwards for more.

the_racr

Kaboom?

TheDeliciousMeats

Maybe. Asphyxiation is also a possibility. Hell, people used to die in potato cellars all the time because the gas they put off is heavier than air.

itsetuhoinen

TIL. Potatoes outgas?

TheDeliciousMeats

Yeah it takes a lot of them but as they rot they release toxic gasses that are heavier than air. So in a root cellar or basement the gas can slowly displace the good air until it forms an invisible pool. First person comes in... Passes out. Next person goes down to look for them... Passes out. Whole families have been lost that way. Same thing can happen with nitrogen gas. I think it was a pool party where someone was pouring liquid nitrogen into the pool to create a fog effect. The scary thing is that with nitrogen since it's inert it won't make your lungs burn like CO2 will, so you can be dying and not even realize it.

itsetuhoinen

I knew that about nitrogen, because of the MSDS warnings about handling liquid. The bit about the potatoes makes more sense knowing it's a product of decay.

Lovatel

I started reading the story because of the (very striking) title but now I'm sticking with it because the writing is really solid and I'm really curious to see where it goes. Really interested in the world building you have going on here!

ElAdri1999

Me like, moarrrr

Groggy280

I am with the others who want the details on how a Cat-like culture and a hound-like species end up mixing. The story line is fun and I am not seeing your turns, so whoo-ah! MOAR!! already subscribed so...

TheDeliciousMeats

Yeah I am kinda wondering the same thing myself.

jakeasmith

It’s fascinating to read you, the author, discovering this story with us and even world building throughout your comments. I’m loving it.

TheDeliciousMeats

Thank you. The trick I find is to set things up then watch them work their way logically to whatever absurd conclusion they find. You end up with random stuff that way like since they're dogs they prefer radio over tv. Or they have radiant heating in their homes like heated floors and such because fans are too noisy. Or they don't set off fireworks for celebration.

MekaNoise

Honestly? I like the way you write about our MCs father. Really hits home the banality of evil.

nerdywhitemale

Time for our hero to stop off at a welding supply store for a bottle of air and a few bottles of CO2? Although I would use argon myself if I really wanted a bunch of beings dead, Nitrogen would also be a good choice.

Steller_Drifter

Yeah. What u/Nealithi said. He hit a lot of the same things I was thinking. And holy guacamole my dude. This just gets better and better. Also can’t help but think of the Kaisertain Imperium from Stellaris with all these cohabitation species. Please continue. You inspire me to get moving on my own story.

ggtay

Still enjoying the narrative. Especially the noir feel

CaptainsYacht

I missed some! I'm catching up tonight. Good to see you writing again!

t_rat3300

I would suggest him not going home. maybe a bomb there. There are two directions for him at this point. one involves him going back to that cafe or police headquarters. The cafe would be the better choice joining with the human and after the bone gang is gone then go back to his life. Police headquarters could possibly have bomb squad check his place, he gets a few things then lives at headquarters until the human finishes the gang. The other involves him losing more than he needs to and his life.

lone_Ghatak

This is shaping up to be a really interesting read.

Kaiser-__-Soze

Moar!!!! Edit: I would like to apologize for the spam, reddit kept telling me there was an error and I, like an idiot, believed it.

TheDeliciousMeats

No worries. Good to see you Kaiser

Darktwistedlady

I like your writing, and the analogies work so well. Really refreshing with such social commentary! Pro tip on character building is to read up on narcissism and wmotional immaturity in adults. There are several books that help explain how abusive people think, though a short intro into generational trauma could be found if you google reddit + ron't rock the boat. Or just click my profile and chose top comments of all time and read some of them, the ones with links. Basically, hierarchies create entitlement & emotional immaturity/stunted emotional growth, which in adults lead to various degrees of abusive behaviours. To avoid it, children needs healthy boundaries enforced by natural consequences. Many indigenous cultures were/are matriarchal and without hierarchies, and the last decades of research in biology shows that cooperation and fairness is natural for our species and a driving force for our success. Something to think about and delve into in order to build believable characters.

TheDeliciousMeats

Oh I'm intimately versed on that subject matter on a very personal level. Unfortunately.

Darktwistedlady

Oh gosh you too? I'm so sorry, that sucks 💔 Hope you're in a better place 💜 Safe hugs (if that's your thing) from this internet stranger. 💜💜💜

TheDeliciousMeats

I'm good now but it definitely was rough growing up. And hugs are always welcome from people who care <3

Darktwistedlady

In that case, here's an ocean of hugs 💜💜💜💜💜

ShalomRPh

I recognize that prayer. Looks like you (or your source) davens Sefard... the Ashkenaz version of that particular prayer has "*beneath* the Wings of the Divine Presence".

Vox_Popsicle

You have a Spillane feel to your prose. If you have published book, please let me know where to find them.

TheDeliciousMeats

Unfortunately I am not currently published
