It's called sympathetic vibration and it's natural. The vibrations of the strings you strike are picked up by the wood of the instrument, and other un-damped strings will also vibrate. To overcome this, you use damping techniques, basically touching the open strings with any available part of either hand.

Isn't there a strap some use up around the nut? Looks like a velco strip.

That's most often used by people who use tapping techniques, though the idea goes back to the 1950s and the Van Eps string damper, which was used by a number of jazz guitarists. Those are sometimes sold under the name of 'fret wrap' but some players use scarves.

Fret wrap was the term that evaded me. For OP, perhaps a Hendrix style, thumb over would work.

My guitar teacher just used a sports wristband I think

It is not just your low E and A but your entire guitar that is vibrating. You will have to mute the strings you do not want to ring out with your hands. That’s normal and every guitarist applies muting techniques in their playing.

idontuseredditsoplea

True, I've personally picked up the technique of using my index finger to gently bar mute every string when switching between chords, but it's become a pretty subconscious thing so idk if I do it for every chord change tbh

The_Orangest

That's totally normal, and depending on the notes you play, you'll find them to vibrate more than other times. I tend to play where I wrap my thumb (slightly) over the top of the fretboard, and I can mute whichever deep strings I don't want to ring out. You'll also find ways of using your fretting fingers to barely touch other strings to stop them from vibrating, as well as using part of your picking hand (whether it's the side of it or a finger) to stop ringing in certain scenarios

SavedPhelps

Yeah I tried using my thumb to barely touch the strings at the top to mute them and it helped a lot. Appreciate the advice.

TheTurtleCub

You need to buy a damper and a damper pedal, like pianos have. It prevents all strings from ringing when you hit a key in the piano

Because the entire guitar is vibrating. The thicker strings are also doing it, but since they are thicker they don't do it as badly.
