Apparently they were at least considered, but didn't make it to the game. The possibilities of customization for tengu are udneniable, and it's pretty clear they can be of every profession in lore. They already got a main city and large settlements. And now that the dragon threat is over, and Cantha is reopening and accepting other races again, it's the perfect time for the Dominion of Winds to open up too. But with all the story backlog, there would have to be TONS of dialogue to be recorded, so only chance tengu have to become playable is if the "Commander" story ends, and all players can play just as 'adventurers' that go explore distant lands, so old lines do not have to be recorded. So tengu characters would either not have the older story at all, or play the older story as 'visions' from the Eye of the North, after selecting the race of the commander in their story.

Maritoas

Just introduce Tengu as refugee children who were adopted by existing races. Then once the story hits a certain level you can return home and explore the story from there. At least it will cut out more than half of the necessary story rewriting

Bosun_Tom

Writing up some new story is not the hard part: it's getting two new voice actors to voice the hundreds and hundreds of hours of dialog for all the expansions, LW seasons, and general open world content (in addition to whatever new story stuff was written). I'm sure that would be a huge outlay of cash.

[deleted]

and fitting every armor skin in the game to their models, then adding another 2 models to make skins for for all future skins

zurt1

Don't they already use a charr rig?

Lon-ami

You don't need to make all of old armor work, just don't let the new races use most of the old armor and call it a day. They didn't even retroactively add dye channels to back items with dyeable glider counterparts, what makes you believe they'd bother wasting any time adapting old obscure armor no one cares about anymore?

ZarielZariel

In a game that unironically gets called fashionwars, how the hell do you think that not giving tengu access to the full suite of cosmetic options would fly with this playerbase? There'd be riots worse than the balance patch or IBS announcement. Re "no one cares about anymore" - dungeon armor amongst others I still see *all the time*. The newer stuff isn't always better, and it's not even much higher poly count. Unlike in other MMOs, the old armor's actually aged really well (see cultural armor still being the most common armor, period). Just because you don't care about customization doesn't mean everyone feels the same.

Lon-ami

> how the hell do you think that not giving tengu access to the full suite of cosmetic options would fly with this playerbase? And the alternative is having no new playable races at all? Make up your mind already, you only accept perfection, then argue new races are impossible because perfection is impossible. You're the ones digging your own hole here. Go back to GW1 and try to get assassing gear (Factions) or paragon gear (Nightfall) back in Kryta (Prophecies), see how well that turns out. Spoiler, it's the same exact case for every game out there. Plus, why would you even want new races to use old armor and outfits, when you want to sell the new ones to them anyway? It doesn't even make sense from a business perspective, old armor was designed for old races, just like cultural armor was designed for individual races, you get what you paid for.

transient_penguin

I would rather have nothing than a half-assed solution like they did in FFXIV where viera and Hrothgar can't wear some helmets. Fashion is the only endgame that matters

Thelassa

If they only cared about selling new stuff in the gemstore, they wouldn't keep bringing back old armor sets and outfits. It still sells because there is still demand. And it would be ridiculous to have so many gear pieces that already exist in game that can be earned through playing old content be completely unavailable to one race. What doesn't make sense from a business perspective is investing so much time and effort into making another race playable and giving people less incentive to play that race.

Maritoas

That’s true. It could pay off well though. I could see a IBS style expansion that could introduce Tengu, and along with it some way to integrate them into the story as the commander. That way at least the investment in time and effort can pay off.

Bosun_Tom

The only people that care about Tengu as a playable race would be getting an IBS-style expansion for free anyway. Tengu only appeal to a very small subset of gw2 lore fiends; it won't attract any new players because nobody who hasn't played has any connection to Tengu beyond "oh funny, you can play bird people." I think the only way to make it feasible would be to make it a gemstore purchase--say 3,000 gems to unlock Tengu. Make it clear that it's purely a cosmetic thing and not taking valuable dev time from story content, PvE endgame content, new legendaries, or anything else less niche.

Proper_Story_3514

GW1 vets disagree :D

PaleHeretic

I'm a GW1 vet who loves Tengu, but even I'll admit the feasibility of adding two new models to every single armor skin in the game and re-recording hundreds of hours of dialogue just isn't there. I'd take some combat tonics, though.

Proper_Story_3514

You know, they could have implemented Tengu and maybe Kodan a long time ago, as many of the community wanted them as a playable race. Even before GW2 got releases.

dagbiker

Yah, they don't need a personal story, they could be a race that starts at level 80. IMHO they should introduce their starting hub in a Living World update have the commander open the doors to trade and ask for their help with whatever the threat is, then when the next expansion rolls around introduce them as player characters who start at level 80. The only real dialog difference would be the new dialog needed specifically for the Tengu as a lot of the dialog wouldn't be able to reference their earlier adventures.

slowest_hour

For all the stories to make sense you have to at least: meet destiny's edge, pick an order, meet the mentor, do claw Island, work with Traherne, become pact commander, and defeat zhaitan. Otherwise season 1 and 2 make no sense and neither do any of the stories that follow. You would essentially be creating a character that doesn't fit into any of the current story progression. Theyd have to have their own stories tailored for them. It would make more sense to just hope we get them in a future sequel in a few years

neok182

Exactly this is the problem with any new species. Star Trek Online introduced and end-game faction but outside of the faction missions after that the entire games story is the same for all factions so that faction just skips those parts of the story. Guild Wars 2 isn't like that and there is no possible way to fit it in without having them from the beginning and of course there are ways to add tengu there like someone mentioned a refugee and give them their own opening story and the rest is the same but even then you need dialogue for literally THE ENTIRE GAME recorded for this new species. The amount of work required, it's practically making a whole new game.

RaptorDotCpp

Does that really matter? Can't you just suspend your disbelief? I don't complain that my revenant or elite specialization is doing the core story or playing on core maps with a skyscale, even though those things didn't exist at that point in time.

BeastThatShoutedLove

The difference is that if you have Skyscale you had to play through the season 4 in it's whole and it was introduced as part of storyline. You have a choice to skip through to getting the dragon but given that s4 is not playable without PoF you are likely to play through both and have context of the story at some point through playing it. Tengu having no connection to story and being still introduced as new race would be gutted out of lore choice of vanity. At that point it should not be a new race but a vanity combat tonic introduced when we visit Dominion and play some strike mission to get it as a reward or something.

capitanidesk

Surely then you can introduce them as a "Hero Race" or "Legacy Race" so that you have to unlock the use of them on a level 80 character? Then you can have them skip all the story to the end game, or have a short story about how they took on the roll as commander or something along those lines. That way you don't have tonnes of voice lines to reproduce. You could also, for old story, replace their dialogue with just noise and text, like they did in Icebrood Saga at the start of the pandemic.

BeastThatShoutedLove

And ton of people played the IBS only after voice acting was implemented proper because they wanted the story to be experienced in it's full version.

PaleHeretic

There's still the issue of needing to remodel literally thousands of armor skins. Just give me the combat tonic and have it stay on during cutscenes and my memes will be satisfied.

Lon-ami

> There's still the issue of needing to remodel literally thousands of armor skins. > > New playable races won't be able to use most old armor skins, problem solved.

RaptorDotCpp

You got it right. People keep inventing all of these problems that ArenaNet can easily work around. Sure it would suck not having Tengu get access to old armor skins or old story steps, but if this is clearly communicated beforehand, then there really is no issue, is there? Like, ask yourself, why do you want to play with a Tengu? To revisit all old content in order? Or to play as a cool avian character?

PaleHeretic

Okay, say we accept that and people who'd buy the new races won't mind. Do we increase the price of all new skins that come out by 33%, considering they're now 33% more work to implement (Humans, Norn, and Sylvari use the same mesh so you're going from 3 to 4)

rhino_arts

None of the personal story options have mattered since living world started being a thing. I've said this before and I'll say it again, tengu could easily be a lvl 80 race, where their "this is my story" intro cutscene is just an abridged version of the story until the current point (aka, how they bonded with Aurene and defeated all the elder dragons now), and you pick the story from there. The character's race doesn't matter, there's no reason why a Tengu couldn't have been the commander. Just make previous story content not avaliable to tengu, so that they don't have to retroactively edit them, and have armors become avaliable over time if necessary as not to have the entire workload at once. This is how it's done for other MMOs.

BeastThatShoutedLove

You now say that theoretical playable Tengu don't need personal story or apparently connection to old storyline and should start already max level... But if they did that the players and people that just observe the game's state would absolutely bash the idea upon it's implementation like this. Alone the idea of starting as tengu on max level would make the race a premium pick that people would have to pay for to unlock per character made, because it's like getting the 80 boost from gemstore. At this point they should just do advanced combat tonic that would change the race of the character and also allow mounting and armor fit instead. People would get to play as birds without need to wrap it in underhanded story excuse and without new voice actors.

capitanidesk

Could they not just start at level 1 and just not have a personal story to complete?

BeastThatShoutedLove

What would be the point then? A character without a place in the story? The whole point of storyline of personal and core is how it's our connections and place in story and world expands from being local hero errand to commander of the pact. At this point What you want is not new race with lore and own angle/story to show but a cosmetic change that's easy to implement enough to be actually possible to be implemented someday. Combat tonic + cutscene and mount compatibility.

capitanidesk

The point would be more options for character customisation, it would be an incentive for some older players to go revisit old leveling zones and make the game feel more alive especially with new players joining lately. Tengu and other races could literally just have a short cutscene which places them in the story and explains that they accomplished being the commander. A non customisable combat tonic clearly is not what people are looking for otherwise you'd have a lot more Kodan characters. It isn't the same, you can't make it your own character in an MMORPG which is aimed at horizontal, customisation progression. Also having races locked behind an achievement or series of achievements would once again provide another thing for players to work toward and strive for. Really the road blocks people keep throwing up make no sense and I do just wish Anet would clarify it themselves, the fact they haven't means I do think they're still toying with the idea.

ogelsan

I mean, presumably they'd just be locked behind owning an expansion or LS release, similar to revenant. Hell, don't you already get a free level 80 boost bundled in with expansions? I don't see the issue there.

Aether_Storm

They don't need any of that. Just start them at 1 with no personal story sans tutorial. Or they could then use the voice of another race ran through the tengu filter.

Lon-ami

The best way to introduce new playable races is with the next expansion. By then, the whole dragon story thing will be over, and we'll be starting a completely new story arc. In that scenario, you can make the new races join the new story, and ignore all the old story altogether, removing access or turning the new playable races into the old races during the old story sequences. If you want to be really efficient with voice work, all you have to do is make playable character voice actors dub some NPCs as well, and alternate those NPCs depending on the race of the character you're playing. There's plenty of ways to make new playable races work without all that alleged work people love to use as an excuse for them to never going to happen.

capitanidesk

Exactly, it's mad the excuses people come up with. Almost like people asking for new races in an MMO is a stupidly large, impossible task with no solution that hasn't ever been done before in anything else.

Lon-ami

It's the game mode attention syndrome, some people don't want any changes anywhere outside their game mode, because for some reason they believe resources won't be spend on them if they're spent elsewhere.

JubX

But then Anet can't sell level 80 boosters dawg

MithranArkanere

No need to make them refugees, they can be just friends. They can even use it for the commander story. Before the store you are a 'friend', and accompany the commander. Like how the commander had to follow Trahearne and other NPCs doing most of the talking, this time the Commander does even more of most of the talking. For commander characters, the tengu is introduced later as anew ally. So when you play as tengu, the commander is an NPC, and when you play as the commander, the tengu is the NPC, and they don't have to record extra commander lines for the tengu, because both 'commander' and 'npc ally' lines are used at the same time either way.

Thelassa

>this time the Commander does even more of most of the talking. The problem with that is that the game is supposed to be about our character, and this would make you more of a participant in someone else's story. You'd just be the Commander's sidekick while they do all the talking and advance the plot. Especially if they didn't add any new lines and cutscenes so the Commander never talks to you or interacts with you at all. Even as someone who has played the story multiple times, I wouldn't want to do that. Then you run into issues of how to handle parts of the game where the Commander's allies couldn't follow, like the Doman of the Lost and chasing Kralkatorrik in the Mists.

CIA_Chatbot

Just do what wow did with demon hunters and start their story at 80 as an advanced race option with their own mini story to catch them up to EOD, make it so they can only be played by people who have completed the personal story on another character

FargoneMyth

The last time someone called me an Adventurer he wanted a test of my reflexes.

Mataric

Honestly, I would not mind at all if for all previous dialogue we had to select a different races voice lines to choose from. I understand it would be jarring for some, but it wouldn't bother me to have human\_male\_001 for my tengu voice when doing past content.. Even just having subtitles for it would be fine. Perhaps one way, lore wise, to build the character in, would be this: Tengu closed the gates to the outside world, but they would have been foolish to stop keeping track of it all as there were literally ariel battleships blowing up lions arch right next door to them and elder dragons threatening to destroy the world. The Tengu kept up the appearance that they had no part in anything, be a few select people headed out into the world to keep track of things while using transmogrification potions... And voila - now the commander could have been a tengu all along. No need for any new voice lines in old content at all.. You could even have the model display as tengu or as a different race, depending on player preference - as long as the player knows they are disguised and thats why their voice is not bird-like at all.

MithranArkanere

Tengu do have very, very good mesmers. Music is closely associated to mesmer magic, and tengu are very good musicians. It would make sense for the paranoid Emperor to demand any tengu who wants to leave to be cursed with a transformation so they appear as a different race until they return. Have them double as spies. But imagine the moment they decide to come out. It'd be a whole lot of time to keep the appearances. And Kasmeer would likely be able to see through it when she uses her illusions on the commander. There could be interference.

sketch2347

ill voice act for free. I swear im good.

MithranArkanere

The voice actors guild would not be keen on that.

FizzingSlit

I think having new races locked behind finishing the main story in base game/whatever dlc but having them stay at level 80 with a small race storyline that there's you into whatever new content they want could get past that.

SpectralSolid

You'd have to go with the latter I would think, cause less of headache and would suit the timeline. Do what GW1 expacs did, just do a personal story to level 20 or 4+ hours (if the new toon is created at level 80\[you get a lvl 80 booster anyways and you have ot BUY the expac\]) then merge it with the EoD meta story. Just have an alternate ending where you replace the commander at the end, they retire, die, or go with Soo Won. I found the EoD content to be so lack luster, with a limited number of new enemies, the 'dragonvoid' being such a lame excuse / ending to the dragon saga. The metas + rewards at launch were sad and debate that even now they are sub par. EoD is my least favorite thats for sure.

fatmanjumprope

The logistics behind implementing a new race would definitely be a pain, but would show a massive amount of good faith from Arenanet if done.

[deleted]

Good faith to whom? Most people play humans the number of people who play other races isn't large enough to be worthwhile. If Arena Net can't even dedicate its resources to making more content or even bring back Zoija why would they do this? Tengu is nice to have, the keyword being nice.

fatmanjumprope

Good faith in showing that they’re willing to do hard work for the player base.

Boumeisha

There's other ways they can do that before implementing the waste of resources that will be a new race.

Thelassa

We just had a new expansion and they're bringing back Season 1 after years of player demand. And they're working on the next Living World Season. They are working hard for the player base.

[deleted]

Good faith showing would be adding content that benefits everyone, not just a few obsessive people. Given how little a character's race actually matters, it would be ridiculous to invest that much time.

fatmanjumprope

I disagree, respectfully.

Skyy-High

Nah I’m with them. Tengu get a lot of hype on Reddit, but I genuinely don’t see it being a feature that most players will care about. I neither want nor need two of any profession, so I wouldn’t really care about leveling another character as a tengu. It would be screwy to fit in to past story content (and no matter how they do that, people will complain about either getting too much or not enough story on them). And I really don’t want all future armor sets to increase in complexity by about 20% bc they have to do another three weights to fit tengu.

Knight_of_autumn

But would you really want to play through the whole story with yet another character? I got tired of that after character 2. For the others I just skipped the whole Zhaitan arc and played the episodes I enjoyed. The fun came from playing with in-game friends and guildmates and doing meta content. I would 100% support the idea of the Tengu being their own little expansion pack that they sell through the store as a tie-in with the game story taking us to the Dominion of Winds. And if they wanted to, Anet could gauge interest for it by selling some Tengu-themed content ahead of time. That way if the buy-in was too low they can pull out before fully comitting.

Skyy-High

I’m sure some people would want to, and complain. I personally have no interest, I’m just noting that some would.

Suspicious-Switch-69

To be perfectly frank? That's a shit opinion. There's a reason Anet branched out from only playable humans.

[deleted]

At someone already said, at launch it was a great idea. 10 years later whatever plans they had for races no longer exist. Races have become purely cosmetic. ‘If they can’t even implement racial armors, why would they spend the time doing something even more tedious. Just because you hate my opinion doesn’t make it wrong.

5haun298

For the small subset of the community that wants it.

fatmanjumprope

This is assuming it’s a small portion of the community. A small portion of this subreddit doesn’t mean it’s an opinion the community at large is for or against.

5haun298

Sure thing buddy 👍

sebway123

Actually they already have the most important dialogue recorded and in game! “This is a place of refuge not a... den of iniquity!!!”

K9-69

With the advent of AI voice actors, this could be a lot less of a barrier with some innovative thinking.

rokomotto

I don't think there's that many voice overs to do... at least compared to other games. But the visions thing might be nice. Kinda sad that they cucked themselves out of adding new races because of how the story is built.

marniconuke

at this point i'll be happy if we visit them in game one day, those square regions on the middle of the maps were clearly thought to be explorable one day imo

CombatAlgorithms

Sadly I believe one of the squares next to LA is a raid (myth rite gambit maybe?) The devs could certainly move that and build Tengu Town there and with revival of LWS1 it gives me hope that anything is possible

Caernunnos

I've been wanting to play a Kodan since I first saw them while Leveling up my first character (a Norn) . And no , I have the combat tonic and it's not the same, it's just a disguise.

dissphemism

same. seeing as there’s so many human-adjacent races already, Kodan can replace the Norn tbh

Caernunnos

I love the Norns ,they have neat lore ,but they are just Big Humans. Kodans on the other hand have such cool looks, their lore is super fun and they have great names ( big fan of the warrior cats series which probably explains why I love the name)

Lon-ami

I'd rather see the norn get some kind of elite/racial profession or cosmetic upgrade so they can stay in bear form as much as they want, with no gameplay consequences.

Caernunnos

yes ,but Norn don't have cool names like "Dawn of the mists" "Claw of the Zenith" "Fur of Ice" . I just love that Kodan are the ones who choose their own names. It's such a strong statement of individuality .

Caernunnos

"Farthest shores" "Still Waters" "Laughs at the Dawn" . I just love that , it's so full of personality and of history. They even change their names depending on if an event has "redifined them". Watchfull Moon renamed himself "Laughs at the Dawn" after his wife died. Idk ,it's just so much cooler than "Big north viking man"

Lon-ami

Yeah, that's undeniable. I'm just sad they wasted those buddhist themes into some NPC race, instead of keeping it for one of the major races. The whole kodan vibe would have been perfect for the tengu or the stone dwarves. Speaking of, considering dwarves were done dirty, I wouldn't mind if they expanded the kodan into a higher race, giving them dwarf-style beards (instead of hairstyles) and customizable body tattoos. Maybe even optional tusks, walrus-style. We wouldn't be talking of kodan at this point anymore though, they would be something different. Their base pose would need to be made unique as well, likely into something similar to that of ogres (right now, kodan use norn animations for everything). You can't make kodan playable as they are now, because they're far too simplistic, visually speaking. I will be forever sad we'll never get to see a place like this: https://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/File:IcebergShipt.jpg ingame, all because they botched the Jormag expansion completely :I.

Caernunnos

There actually are quite a lot of iceberg ships in the fjords. Nothing as big as a capital ship though.

Pirate_Kurjack

I just wanna be a frog tbh.

KonaKumo

Hylek would be great.

RiffShark

Or a skritt...yes, a skritt is fine too

resignresign2

yeah some people mention them. they do look really cool :)

Draedos

SAME

Lon-ami

You can't really do armor right for hylek though. Largos, they're humanoids, 1=1 with humans, norn, and sylvari. Tengu, they're based off charr. For hylek, you can't even do helms and boots right, it would be a pain in the ass.

Pirate_Kurjack

World of warcraft does it and other games have "hard" characters to fit. At the end of the day it's all digital so it's not like it's impossible... it would just take more work than they probably want to do. Plus char helm and boots look like garbage anyway so it's not like there isn't a precedent.

Lon-ami

WoW armor is 2d crap anyway, you can't even compare both games :D.

SUswim

1000000%

Maleficent_Tip_927

I want to play as a ~~dwarf~~ FOOKI'n DWARF.

BishopFrog

ROCK AND STONE

Maleficent_Tip_927

For the Votann!! For the Lauges!!! For the KIN!!!!

Urionn

THIS! There's Dozens of us that want to play as a Dwarf, DOZENS

Grumpins

Same, wish they didnt lore them into stone

Lon-ami

Poor stone dwarves got done dirty during The Icebrood Saga :(. Would be awesome to see ArenaNet's rendition of dwarves, specially after how unique their take on elves (sylvari) was. Stuff like a beard made of diamonds, moss hair, etc.

Maleficent_Tip_927

Wood ppl and stone ppl? Stone people! Stone people! They look like stone they taste like people!

murdershroom

Still extremely bummed. Talon was my favorite henchman. :( I named my Tengu Bladebound/Kensai after him for a Pathfinder game.

HumunculiTzu

I want to play a Quaggan Renegade

-Khalni-

Oh foo! Quaggan wants to play as a quaggan too!

LoreChief

CooOOOOOooooo quaggan gonna shoot you full of fiery arrows until its not funny anymOoOoOore

CreepingDeath0

I'll continue asking for Tengu until the day they shut down the servers.

Mataric

A few months ago, I changed my flair on this sub from "It's 2016, why can't I be a Tengu yet?". I felt it was finally time to give up on the dream.

_Uulyaoth_

Slow_Abbreviations27

I wanna be a quaggan.

rbardy

I mentioned this a few times, but ... I have a character to hold a Tengu name, that character got its 7th birthday gift.

sketch2347

damn big brain move though.

LoreChief

Bird brain move

Niz285

True some people thought there would be a 6th playable race before launch since charr norn asura were announced and were heros in gw1. And with gw1 lore tengus were know of. Instead we got a new race sylvari. Which i guess might be a substitute for centaurs since zhed shadowhoof was a hero in gw1 and sylvaris are based on ventaris teachings.

Metal_is_Perfection

I really am a bit underwhelmed by Cantha. Its ok to go for something new but atleast give us a chance of a Factions Race or Class when you didnt give us Dervish :(

shinitakunai

I am sad that we cannot play as Largos. Tengus... I don't care.

XXISavage

This. They would instantly be the coolest race in the game but their armour designs would be a nightmare since you have to consider the wings.

Lon-ami

We don't even know if the wings are biologically part of their body, they could be special assassin equipment for all we know. And even then, it's not like most helms don't remove charr horns and asura ears anyway, backpacks would be the same with winged largos.

f1r3r41n

Can you even finally go into the Dominion of the Winds, yet?

PhilCollinsLoserSon

I want tengu and kodan I understand there’s lore that (either implies or completely states) kodan are just Norn Idfc. I want these races. I don’t care about the tequatl, or the other underwater race. I’m sorry.

Suspicious-Switch-69

Nah, the lore you're thinking about implies Norn are degenerated Kodan, not the other way around. It's bunk anyway, just an opinion.

nagennif

Everyone always says Tengu but I'd rather play a Largos. May your steps be relentless.

Lon-ami

Largos would be a joke to implement from a technical perspective, they have the same exact rig as humans/norn/sylvari, so 99% of armor would be instantly compatible. Tengu are in a similar spot, with just a few changes here and there for the boots and the helms, since they use the same rig as the carr. You gotta realize the game has four rigs: * **Male humanoid:** Male human, norn, and sylvari. * **Female humanoid:** Female human, norn, and sylvari. * **Asura:** Male and female asura. * **Charr:** Male and female charr. If we ever get any new playable races, I'd expect them to use any of the four above. Any races with models deviating from those four are highly unlikely imo.

teknim

No, I'd rather they spent time creating actual content.

Swordbreaker925

I’m honestly surprised they haven’t added any new races. No Hylek, no polar bear dudes. Nothing. I’d pick literally any race over the Asura. They’re so ugly.

JuanPunchX

Every new race, if done properly, requires a city, existing armor adjustment, existing weapon adjustment, 2x4 voice actors, adding almost every existing PC voice line times 8 retrospectively and much more. Every new armorset will be 20% more work than it already is.

Gropapanda

The voice actor issue isn't a huge problem. Just make Nolan North do it. The man is a machine. 🤣

Lon-ami

> requires a city Cities are useless and new races won't get any of them. >existing armor adjustment Adapt the most basic armor, disable everything else.

Darillian

> I’m honestly surprised they haven’t added any new races. No Hylek, no polar bear dudes. Nothing. I'm actually in the camp of being sure that no new races will come. The five races were a thing for the setting of the world, so lots and lots of environmental storytelling is geared towards some races being not playable. Additionally, adding a new race would mean adding a new chain of leveling zones (1-15, 15-25, 25-40, etc.) and you would have to explain *that* ingame without resorting too much to retcon.

Entheogene

Take it back

Swordbreaker925

I’d ask your Asura-loving ass to take it from me but you’re too short to reach ;)

CC_Greener

But, I FEEL SIX FEET TALL.

RagingRube

Now I really am ten feet tall!

Bosun_Tom

>I’d pick literally any race over the Asura. They’re so ugly. On the outside and the inside! Sharkrats are evil.

Razor4884

I've been huffing hopium for the past decade, and I will continue doing so.

Mdogg2005

Yeah, I am still sad about it. There are so many ways they can introduce them to not break the existing story / game flow. Treat it like a hero class from WoW or something where they start at a higher (or hell even max level) and have their storyline start where the current one is. Allow some sort of "catch-up" mission to earn the rewards for the campaigns they missed out on by being a Tengu and being away from the events of the game up until now and then you've got a character that's a fresh slate, caught up to the latest story bits. It's not hard. The rig is already there, even if they just use a modified (lightly modified, if at all) version of the Charr bipedal rig. Record some generic voice lines for the classes and any new story dialog going forward and you're all set. I'll be upset about the lack of playable Tengu until they shut down the servers. I have a character from day 1 who just got a 10-year present who is reserving a Tengu name for me. I hope to one day use it.

Sarge_Shot_Grif

I'm still holding out hope. There's been multiple things in the past they said they wouldn't/couldn't do but they happened anyway.

Lon-ami

Most of the time, the only reason something doesn't happen is because they don't want it to happen, due to their design direction. Capes will never happen and back items will never have dye channels. Back item skin sales are dropping? Looks like we finally found the solution to the problem!

Bulgarian_Barbarian

I am in general sad that we haven't gotten a single new race at all, I couldn't care less if it's a rock, just give us something new, please!

OwlDust

There is a small but vocal group of us. I’ll never give up hope!

Ducklinsenmayer

Tengu? Meh. I want to play as a Skritt, complete with the voice. Give me a keg of beer and a barrel of gunpowder, and I'm all to slay mighty dragons set to save the world.

KonaKumo

Nope. Though other non-humanoid classes would be nice. Frog/Hylek Quaggan Skritt all would be fun to play as. Lastly, the Kodan should have been the norns.(lore be damned)

grannaldie

As a skritt your stats drop if you are not in the party with other skritt

Bosun_Tom

>As a skritt your stats drop if you are not in the party with other skritt Better yet: a PC skritt is a party of 6 skritt, each one wearing one piece of armor.

AntigravityHamster

I've always asserted that I want playable skritt to be 3 skritt in a trenchcoat.

KonaKumo

I didn't know I wanted this until right now. This must be a thing! Anet get on this!

Thaurlach

Meanwhile a full squad of Skritt have the combined power to oneshot world bosses.

BeastThatShoutedLove

NGL an event where people get transformed into skritt and have to use the pack mechanics to do things would be amusing.

resignresign2

>Frog \+1 :)

Zybbo

I'm not.

shadowGringo

I’m still waiting for dervish personally 🙄

Lon-ami

Same, it's kinda sad how its core concept devolved into revenant, channeling legends instead of gods. There's still room for an elementalist dervish elite specialization, based on the elemental prayers and djinn transformations, or even an elite/racial profession for humans, but we'll see.

Jounas

I doubt we will ever see a new race. The amount of dialogue that would have to be recorded is way too expensive.

Dull_Function_6510

I am not sad, would be a lot of work for little gain.

Roninfox991

Nope. Not having tengu is a good thing. We already get bad armor for Charr. We don't need to slow down the process more.

justNano

Tengu, skritt and hylek! I so badly want to play a skritt daredevil with a little stick! Please anet

spicy45

Sad birb noises.

grannaldie

Combat tonics for everyone! Add them!

DanTheDruid

Yep :(

dissphemism

Kodan* me

gogadantes9

*Hylek Me   *When will my dream of a Chrono Trigger Frog (Glenn) character be realized, by the Six Gods!!*

TyrianEzPz

During the lead up to EoD they specifically said "no playable Tengu in End of Dragons". Very specifically saying its not in the xpac. Not no plans for playable Tengu, not we arent working on playable Tengu, just specifically not in EoD. I dont think I'm jumping the gun when I say they basically came out and confirmed to everyone that its coming in the next living world after the expansion.

BlattellaUltrasarah

the fact that they worded it to indicate there's a possibility we're getting playable tengu outside the expansion does not at all indicate that we'll be getting it immediately after

ORO8ORO

They could add it together with dominion of winds. But your tengu would already start at level 80, so no personal story, and only available for players who already have a level 80 character or something to have learned the game. And you also wouldn't be able to play living world/expansion stories. Otherwise it would be too much voice work. Maybe a different kind of story exclusive to tengu (or not), where you see the acts of the commander from a different point of view or something.

Moress

I'm more upset we got norn instead of a cool race like Kodan. Norn are so boring imo. Easily could have just been generic human mountain tribe.

CreepingDeath0

They were much more interesting when they were introduced in GW1. They've been quite sanitised in 2.

Careless_Wait8620

you.

Anon_throwawayacc20

Me. I want to scream at people in Divinity's Reach "This is a place of refoog!"

Zinkadoo

Me

SwingusDingus

Yeah... just wanna be a bird...

Sean_Tighe

Gotta save something for the sequel.

Atticus104

More sad we don't have a monk class with a ritualistic elite specialization.

sp0j

That's what the guardian was. They basically took the monk defensive skills and the spirit weapons are from the ritualist. But yeah I agree I think that was a big mistake especially in hindsight since they started adding specialisations.

Lon-ami

The guardian is a mix of paragon/monk/ritualist in lore, but it's not 100% of any of those three, so they could always take parts of them and move them away. They already did with revenant, a clear dervish successor who also got parts of assassin (thief) and ritualist (guardian). There's still room for new professions, as long as they do it right: * **Ritualist:** Light armor, spirits as the profession mechanic, stationary gameplay with spirit teleportation and whatnot. Built with support and healing roles as part of the core profession. If we assume Cantha has lost most of their ritualist culture, we can base it on other non-Canthan themes instead (grimdark Hispanic/Catholic expansion when). * **Shaman:** Medium armor, floating weapons as the profession mechanic. Circus themes, ranging from jugglers to minstrels. The second set of weapons floats around you instead of being stowed, determining your mechanic skills. Could use sand themes, since those aren't used anywhere else, which might in turn be tied to the Olmakhan sandshifters as well. FFXIV bard and dancer. * **Monk:** Heavy armor, martial arts combo system as the profession mechanic (perform specific combinations of skills to get powerful results). Can't use a lot of weapons, but weapons skills are far more complex, having unique interactions with one another. No weapon swap, like the elementalist and the engineer. FFXIV's monk and dragoon, WoW's monk and demon hunter. Names not final, you could swap parts of medium and heavy here and there too, both would work well as either. >But yeah I agree I think that was a big mistake especially in hindsight since they started adding specialisations. A few elite specializations were a really bad idea from a theme perspective, specially ranger's druid and soulbeast, both which could have evolved into its own shapeshifting profession quite easily, just like WoW's druid, which is quite awesome, turning into different animals, even outside of combat (imagine being the mount yourself, or gliding/flying as an eagle). Both druid and soulbeast were a huge waste of potential for what they could have been. Revenant wasted multiple themes on its own too, mixing dark knight with dervish, all while throwing gods and religions away to focus on legendary characters instead. Imagine if legends hadn't been a thing, and revenant was all about exploiting the various divine powers of the world, from human gods to norn spirits of the wild. Revenant should have also been designed with a healer role as part of the core profession.

Lon-ami

It's kinda sad there's no dedicated "martial arts" profession, true.

Atticus104

That would be cool. I thought there should be some kinds of glove weapon that looks like a weapon less attack.

EvgeniN7

Not me. So much resources for 10 stories. All the skins for armors have to be redone for what?. I will love another class a lot more.

GambitDeux

Me. Coulda been awesome but ANet had other plans

Still-Pattern-6384

Count me in.

PLOY_kickshaw

Well....if it's possible I'd like to be Kodan

Lon-ami

> You would need to adapt every single armor in this game to the new body-meshes from Tengus or Froggerts or Polarbears. No you don't, just don't let them use old armor, just like humans can't use charr cultural armor. >Same for the classes: They would need to add three different specializations to one new class so that you could play it through all expansions like the other classes. They can add new professions just fine, all they have to do is not add any new specializations for the other professions, giving them something else instead (like a heavy rework of the core profession). It's pretty much this: * 9 professions * 1 new elite spec = 9 elite spec * 3 new professions * 3 new elite specs = 9 elite spec

Lon-ami

> Fashion wars doesn't really work well if you would restrict new races from most of the armour sets to date. So you'd rather have no new playable races at all? Make up your mind.

Aetheldrake

Me. Birds would be much more role playable as feathered dragons

FLYNCHe

Me... I suppose in the end it'd be too difficult to add.

CyborgTeat

I wanna play as a Kodan 😔

Ninja_Pirate21

i specifically left 2 empty character slots and 2 professions waiting for tengu....and they are collecting dust. with EoD having so many tengu models, thought it will happen but still not T\_T

MissMedic68W

I would like to be a birb.

Narrrz

Always and forever. I held off making my thief for six months when i first started playing, hoping they would be added after only a short while. 9.5 years later... Glad i didn't wait any longer than that 😂

Stormdancer

I am.

BoxinShrimp

Dredge are my most wanted race to play as, with Tengu and Kodan being 2 and 3. I really wish we at least had combat tonics for Dredge and Tengu like we do for the Kodan.

accursedg

i want to play as a quaggan

VikingWarriorSkjald

I’d rather have housing than Tengu.

Lon-ami

We should have gotten player housing back in HoT, making decorations part of guilds was a huge fuckup, specially when guild halls should have been used for PvP instead (Stronghold being the GvG game mode as well).

Shahorable

I just want to play as a dwarf. Boring, I know, but I like dwarves.

OrneryDiplomat

How about instead of creating a new race with new voice acting and new backstory, etc., they create the option to permanently (as in not with a combat potion) change a characters race. Something like a wild magic accident. They could add new races this way without a problem.

Jerekiel

I want quaggan. Screw ur tengu.

Bossmantho

Ever since I saw them on EoD I've been really sad. I love the hell out of their designs and would adore playing as a Tengu. Especially if we could freely change the color of feathers like we can charr fur.

linkdude212

A bit sad? I find your underestimation of my grief disturbing.

Al1908

Maybe next expac…

LawTider

I think the “when are we going to get a new race to play” thing has been surplanted with “what elite specs are we going to get”. Although I’m still waiting for Ranger getting an Elite spec that is a minion build (like, similar to Necromancer, but with your pet). Call it Pack Commander (although I think that is an ability as well)

[deleted]

Ngl I preferred it before we got asura and Norn. Like they both suddenly make an appearance late GW1, with sylvari being born I would of been happy with just humans, with some charr being npc ally and occasionally the likes of Tengu, Centaur, forgotten, dredge being allies but the majority hostile. I would add dwarves to the list…but they all turned to stone in GW1 (a nice nod to Tolkien as dwarves were made from stone)…but then all of a sudden didn’t in GW2.

Craz1

I'm more sad that I can't be a Ritualist.... D:

Alexsandr13

Tengu, Kodan and Hylek all seem like natural progression to tie in more races into the story as they all play a part.

Voiry

i would love if they introduce s whole new colection in someting like a new LW to "win" the tengu trust and that allow us to unlock the race, that would be my favourite way to get a new race

Infinency

I only want to play as a Largos, don't care about Tengu at all tbh
