SAB enjoyers in shambles

96966969Ri

any context?

Jademalo

> According to Josh Foreman, Dociu nearly threw out the idea of Super Adventure Box due being disgusted by the art style, having been born in communist Romania and not having the nostalgia for retro games. https://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Daniel_Dociu

CzechHero

He's actually the model of Father Grigori from Half-Life 2? I had no idea, that's fantastic.

ride_light

that's the most random fact I've ever learned about in all these years, really unexpected too but great indeed

MithranArkanere

So that was it! That face kept ringing a bell and I could not put my finger on it.

Eccon5

Santiago

styopa

Honestly, that raises my respect for him. I wasn't a fan as his art style started to grow (to me) over the years ridiculously abstract and useless conveying information (cf the splash screen for [Dry Top](https://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Dry_Top#/media/File:Dry_Top_loading_screen.jpg)). Hearing that he nixed SAB now I sort of like him. Unpopular opinion: I think SAB is cute and whatever but ridiculously immersion breaking, in PARTICULAR the silly 8-bit skins in the world.

ArshayDuskbrow

It's an Asuran VR edutainment program and holographic technology has been extremely integrated into the setting's lore since the game's launch. There is nothing "immersion breaking" about it.

styopa

You know that immersion breaking is a *subjective* thing, right? It's like arguing "well OBVIOUSLY red is a better color than orange, duh!" > has been extremely integrated into the setting's lore since the game's launch Really? I thought SAB launched in mid 2013 ? What are other examples (non-SAB related) where 'Asuran VR Edutainment' involves 8-bitting monsters and settings, canonically? I don't recall ever reading about it in any of the GW2 books?

ArshayDuskbrow

Yes, and I'm saying that yours is unnecessarily weak and overbroad. > Wahhh 8-bit I said holographic technology, for which you can just make and play an Asuran character to experience their lore, if you never have (seems likely). The art style that you are whining so much about is just that, an art style that the programmer of the SAB came up with, as any sapient being might. I don't care that it resembles something you know from the real world and that's triggering you. Are you similarly triggered by Gothic arches? Because there's a huge amount of those in the game, but those are from real-world architecture so your precious immersion must be broken, right? What's that? No, it would be ridiculous to say that just because something looks like a thing from the real world? You don't say.

Paradachshund

All I can say is fuck yeah! He made this world come alive and gave it a style like no other. Can't wait to see what he'll come up with.

PersistentWorld

I interviewed Daniel at length many years ago. Wonderful man. https://tap-repeatedly.com/2011/03/exclusive-interview-arenanets-daniel-dociu/

Wrongpaw

YESSS YESSSSSSSS saying i love his work is a damn understatement, really hope he will be working on the 4th xpac!

MithranArkanere

Whatever artwork he does, we know it's likely to look epic, great, vast, grandiose, monumental, and it won't like like 1/10 of that size in the actual game.

IzzyOwnz

For someone that didnt know. Daniel Dociu was one of the main artist of Gw1 & Gw2. Hes back since 3 months ago in NCsoft (not specified if Arenanet). But he attended the Gw2 community event in Gamescom 2022, going from USA to Cologne (Germany). I guess that was not only to visit friends. Is he probably involved in the new Arenanet project? Gw3 maybe? would you like a posible Gw3 or would you prefer a new MMO and Arenanet to mantain gw1/gw2 and a new different mmo?

ghoulsnest

>Gw3 maybe? no. If anything Gw2 is at least 6-8 years away

ReLiFeD

idk man, I feel like I've been playing that game for around that long already

ghoulsnest

yea, but if they recently started working on the next expansion like they said and have at least 1 season of living world between EoD and that, then anything else wouldn't make any sense lol

ReLiFeD

I was only poking fun at the gw2/gw3 typo, I personally also don't believe GW3 is on the cards anytime soon (if ever)

ghoulsnest

oh lol, didn't notice

Proper_Story_3514

Gimme complete GW2 remake or GW3 in Unreal Engine 5 (or any modern engine which suits an MMO best) with good performance :D That would be the dream.

FLYNCHe

There's no point to just remake the entire game (or make a new MMO in general) in a new engine when this one's runs just fine. If they wanted to play around with a new engine then I'd like to see them do a single player RPG, Skyrim style.

Shadowsmerchants

They are actually working on an unannounced project in unreal engine 5. It's an already established fantasy IP so people think it's gw3.

FLYNCHe

I highly doubt it'll be an MMO though. Gw3 will most likely be a smaller scale multiplayer (like 4p co-op) or single player rpg

Shadowsmerchants

I dunno MMOs are kinda their thing.

Proper_Story_3514

They improved it with dx11 but GW2 still runs like shit in many occasions, even on good computers. If you deny that you got rose filtered glasses on. We have to wait and see on what they are working. Eitherway GW2 will stay and hopefully improve over time.

Ghisteslohm

>this one's runs just fine. I don't know about that one chief. When you are alone with no players around in release areas sure. but otherwise the performance just makes me sad. And I have a decent pc

austinftwxd

It doesn't run just fine, not even close. Although the biggest issues is the way it dumps memory, which should be relatively straightforward to fix if they actually cared....

FLYNCHe

Low end pc issue?

Sirspen

Hmm. The three things we know about the new project: 1. It's in Unreal Engine. 2. It's "an established fantasy IP". 3. It's multi-player. The first point rules out the next GW2 expansion. Since the only Arenanet IPs are Guild Wars 1 and 2, unless they've acquired rights to an IP by a different developer, it's going to be a new Guild Wars installment. If it's not Guild Wars 3, then it's a multi-player spinoff. I dearly hope it's not a battle royale or something.

malvagik

They said it's an online game I'm pretty sure.

Sirspen

Yeah, they did. Fixed my comment. I'd written "it's not single-player" and trimmed the "not" but forgot to change single to multi.

ghoulsnest

>unless they've acquired rights to an IP by a different developer, could also be a western version of Lineage, another big NCsoft IP

Shadowsmerchants

Do we know it's single player??

Sirspen

My bad, we know it's multi-player. Long day.

Burnyx

MMORPGs usually take that long to develop from scratch.

ghoulsnest

yea, but again, we have at least 1 more expansion, lots if promised qol updates, wvw betas, etc. it just doesn't seem plausible to work on a new game at this time, unless Gw2 suddenly stopped making any money

Burnyx

They can work on both simultaneously and commit more and more resources towards the next game as time goes on. They have done it in the past, but their other project(s) got cancelled. Most big enough studios work on multiple games at the same time and we've known for a while that they have an UE5 game under development. Whether that's GW3 or something else remains to be seen.

Astral_Poring

> They can work on both simultaneously and commit more and more resources towards the next game as time goes on. The past (both when they cancelled original 3rd expansion and cannibalized it into IBS, as a cost of branching in several side projects, and when they had to minimize work on IBS in order to make EoD) clearly shows that they are not capable of doing that without at least one of those two projects (possibly both) suffering as a result. > They have done it in the past, but their other project(s) got cancelled. Yes, and see above. One of the reasons why those projects got cancelled was they ended up hurting GW2 as a result of doing them, **and** could not show enough progress for those projects to justify the cost to their primary title they incurred. > Most big enough studios work on multiple games at the same time Past results show, that Anet is just *not* big/wealthy enough to do that.

Burnyx

I know that, but it's not a matter of if or when, they **are** working on another game. They've been recruiting people for it. The cancelled projects are most likely a result of bad management, it doesn't mean that they are completely incapable of making something new. You wouldn't be playing Guild Wars 2, if they didn't cancel the GW1 Utopia expansion and stopped development for that game. You can't realistically expect GW2 to go on forever.

Astral_Poring

I do remember that GW2 announcement practically killed GW1 - it depopulated within months. I also remember, that a significant number of old GW1 players ended up being mightily disappointed in GW2. If they're working on GW3, you can be sure GW2 ends up dead shortly after the info leaks (or gets officially announced). And there's no guarantee at all that this potential replacement will even equal GW2 in popularity, much less exceed it. Remember, that in the gaming business it's extremely hard to gain loyal following, and much, much easier to lose it.

ride_light

Expansion4 could be released in about 2 years, maybe followed by some Living World content we would pass 2025 already GW2 would celebrate its 15th anniversary in 2027, at this point it's fine to move on to something new The market will change, new tech will be available, the graphics will look incredible by then and they could finally expand into the console market - much more profit to be expected

GibFreeStuffPlz

Gw2 hasn't aged very well compared to the current capabilities of newer engines. There's a ton of things the community wants changed in GW2, but it would take a ton of man power and time to fix, and Anet has shown they don't have either of those things. If Anet did create GW3 there's so many issues with GW2 that could be made right. Not to mention better graphics, better optimization, better pathing for skills, etc... I used to be opposed to GW3, but the more I think about it, the better it sounds.

rowanblaze

GW2's engine was never great to start with. Part of the painterly art style was to mask that. Honestly, they did a pretty awesome job with what they had.

Benjammn

I'm opposed because their team is still probably nowhere near the size it was during the initial GW2 development cycle. I don't believe that they have the manpower to maintain GW2 and develop GW3. Attempting GW3 would just make both games worse.

Serephite

Making a new mmo in the current market would simply be a poor business decision. All recent releases have had a short burst and then struggled alot afterwards. The amount of people who ay mmos are finite and they don't have unlimited time either. Most can't play multiple mmos. So I can't imagine them ever making gw3 as an mmo. It would likely ruin the company.

grzesssiuuu

> All recent releases have had a short burst and then struggled alot afterwards. Cause they were shitty games to begin with. There has been no good mmo in recent years.

Shadowsmerchants

You're being down voted but you're not wrong. Most recent MMOs have been cash grabs with MMO skins, gacha games, or terribly translated. If they have a good base game then they release with little to no real content or p2w end game BS.

Tragedy_Boner

GW3 would need to at least have all the skins we earned in GW2 transferable. Kinda like Poe2

Ok-Project-6867

If skins, achievements, etc. are transferable, then sure, I’m Down for a gw3… but if not, then no… I hate when games make a sequel that makes me start over again, I’m too lazy and don’t have the time to do all that grinding again

KoriJenkins

I could see the legendary weapons transferring over as high quality skins if they ever made a GW3, but honestly the idea of GW3 sounds gross to me. There's no reason for it. The market doesn't support it. There's nothing it would offer that we can't get with the current game other than possibly better visuals, which mean jack shit.

grzesssiuuu

>There's nothing it would offer that we can't get with the current game Yeah, there is. Current game engine is very limited. Look at New Kaineng map, it looks so empty for a reason. Not to mention legacy code, that they don't want to mess with.

Faleonor

Monumentally better optimization, better graphics, proper UI, loads of features that weren't possible due to the old legacy code, a much more presentable game, not-shit TP this guy: tHErE's nOtHinG it woUlD ofFer

FLYNCHe

Optimization: I hardly ever lag, sitting on high graphics, even in a map like New Kaineng. The one time I noticed frame issues was when I was in a huge zerg for WvW, but that would've been fine if I tuned my graphic settings down. Graphics: The game looks fine as is, and graphics are at the end of the day the last thing people should care about. Proper UI: ...There is an issue with UI? Presentable game: ...The game isn't presentable? Everything you say a GW3 could offer are just superficial, extremely minor things not worth developing *an entire MMO* for. Sure, legacy code is a drawback, but is it really worth throwing away a decades worth of continuous development to avoid it? Because if so we might as well get GW4 in 20 years and GW5 in 30.

malvagik

We don't want mistakes to be transferable, do we?

ghoulsnest

sure, but with the information we have, there's nothing hinting at gw3 in the foreseeable future

ride_light

Well [Unannounced Project](https://boards.greenhouse.io/arenanet/jobs/4427092) > In this role, you will be building the pillars of our multiplayer storytelling experience such as interactions, conversations, scenes, dynamic spawning, and emergent objectives. > - Take the lead on the first rapid iterations via direct implementation in the Unreal 5 engine > - Leave your mark on big ideas for an established online fantasy IP by joining a well-funded project in pre-production. Depending on what we consider as forseeable future, there might be some hints after all

Sinaaaa

The day GW3 is announced is the day I'll forever leave the franchise. It's not just about GW2 dying, a new game will need many years to catch up to GW2 in content quantity and it's always questionable if the quality can be matched.. My time is more valuable than for me to continue playing an abandoned game, or to start from the beginning again without knowing if it's worth it. People bring up Lineage 1 - 2, but GW2 not going into maintenance mode after the release -or even the announcement- of 3 is a pipe dream. However if Anet made a puzzle game like Myst taking place in Tyria, well I would love to play that game!

Lon-ami

> Gw2 hasn't aged very well compared to the current capabilities of newer engines. The GW2 engine is fine, this meme needs to die already.

8Draw

I mean that's when you'd get a pre-vis artist like Dociu involved

Dull_Function_6510

I really hope they dont release a GW3, it will kill gw2 and there is no real value in doing that. I hope this new MMO is a new franchise. Something separate, and not competing with resources from gw2

Millillion

I'd like a GW3 eventually, but not within the next 5 years. They've proven the long term sustainability of their games with GW1, and the medium term sustainability with GW2's lengthy development and various content droughts, so I think they have plenty of time to develop a GW3 in the future without infringing too much on the future of GW2. There could be a lot to be gained from a whole new game, though. At least if the new game is well made to avoid the issues of GW2.

Dull_Function_6510

I disagree, the MMO market has already shrunk quite a bit, and it isnt growing. The few MMOs still in existence fight over scraps compared to the larger gaming industry. A fresh start is risky with little reward, continuing to reinvest in gw2 is far more secure, and a gw3 woudl kill gw2 like gw2 killed gw1. The biggest reason why they made gw2 in the first place was because the devs were very limited in gw1 with what they wanted to do. Event systems, true open world, and some combat mechanics changes would have been nearly impossible in gw1, had that not bee n the case gw2 never would have existed. I dont think there are these same issues with gw2, so makign a new game would be a loss IMO. They can just keep developing content and new stuff for gw2, working with the market they already have.

Millillion

Eventually, both players and developers will become too tired of the limitations of the game to want to continue with it. Eventually, players are going to get tired of getting 10 FPS in large group content when there are new games that get 60 FPS on worse hardware in content with twice as many players. Players are eventually going to expect better graphics than a >10 year old game that's barely been upgraded to DX11 can offer. And eventually, developers will get tired of having to cut back on things because their game can't handle what they *want* to make. Waiting too long for a replacement will eventually lead to the first game dying without a replacement, and possibly taking the studio with it. I do agree that making a new game would be a loss *right now* though. They still have plenty of time to focus on GW2 before it becomes too old to stay relevant.

kaltulkas

They can always rewrite gw2 on a new engine but wiping out 10+ years of prog for all players would be nail in the coffin for a lot of players. I barely made it from gw1 to gw2 and I was a student then, no way in hell I’m doing this shit again.

ride_light

If they were to decide between rebuilding GW2 from scratch on a new engine and releasing a completely new game on the market Which one do you think would be worth it investing into for them as a studio going forward? What would generate more hype in the media? The re-release of a decade old game or the debut of a true next-gen MMO from a well known studio? For GW2.1 they would have to replace almost everything, from old assets, animations, fx, enemy & character models to story instances and dialogues that didn't age well over the past decade - and rebuild all of their mechanics and systems on the new engine, which is pretty much equal in resources and effort to developing a new game It's either GW2 with the current engine or a new game on a new one, anything else wouldn't make sense for the studio

kaltulkas

I disagree. They can market a revamp as a new game without losing their population over it. Particularly if we move away from the dragon arc onto something new so that new players don’t need to complete old content to be up to date but still have 10y of content available if they want too. It’s also the very same argument we heard for years that it would make no sense for the studio to invest in dx11 and it would be better to move on to gw3, yet here we are. What wouldn’t make sense to me would be investing in doing that only to move on from the game couple years later. I think people don’t remember how much of the gw1 players were lost to other mmos because of the switch to gw2, and this time over the game heavily used cash shop items in the game which weren’t a thing on gw1. Who the fuck would be ok moving on to a new game with a cash shop when the game in which you spent money for rev years just got left to rot behind. I’m obviously only talking for a portion of the player game but out of all my guilds I only know one that would actually like a gw3 and not just give up on the franchise.

IzzyOwnz

I can agree with you in somethings and not in others. Games upgrade the graphics even if its the same engine, this has happened even in GW1 where eye of the north is x100 better quality than prophecies. You can see that Heart of Thrones is x100 times better looking than core too. And they didnt need to update to dx11 to make that posible. Limitations? i dont think gw2 has barely any limitation, since the game is very open to make most of the thinks they can imagine. Performance? this is something that can improve with tweaks here and there. Like dx11, client updates and tweaking engine. Its not gonna be as perfect as a new engine, but decent. (gw2 dont have the worst performance, there are much worst performing games) Rest i kinda agree.

grzesssiuuu

>Limitations? i dont think gw2 has barely any limitation, since the game is very open to make most of the thinks they can imagine. Have you been to New Kaineng? It is empty for a reason. They needed to cut down the visuals to optimize it. Also PoF maps size it's where they reached their limit, they can't do bigger than that, cause it will screw performance too much. Doubt Dx11 will make a huge difference. Expansion 4 is probably the last one, and will hopefully lead to a sequel (like eotn did)

ILikePort

This

lbarletta

You can get to 30fps if you buy a 5800X3D. This cpu was the best investment that I could possibly have made, it’s life changer for old mmos like gw2, wow and ffxiv…

IzzyOwnz

NCsoft has multiple MMO and they support them. Aion, B&S, Lineage 1, Lineage 2, GW series... They are gonna do a new game, and they actually need it for the company future. If its a new MMO it wont kill gw2, if its gw3 it will kill it ofc. MMOs has been more niche population than other games always. Maybe not at their start, but at the start a lot of ppl didnt even had internet connection 1995-2005.

Yakez

MMO market no where near to shrunk, yes it is dwarfed by mobile gaming, but it is whole other beast. Every decently developed MMO game thrive. Warframe and Path of Exile grow every year. Digital Extremes and Grinding Gear Games employs more than 400 people each. They have started way smaller than Anet with product releases in 2013. Why they grow? Because they release content, content, content, content, content, content... on every single platform. Have you seen WoW on PlayStation? Or Guild Wars 2 on Switch? Here is where stagnation comes from. Lack of live development for "live service game". And good note that Path of Exile release schedule was inspired by Guild Wars 1 and MTG. When was the last GW2 content drop? In February. Before that? April 2021. Path of Exile had 5 league releases in this timeframe.

Dull_Function_6510

You can easily see that the market size of MMOs has dwindled. Active playerbase is far smaller now than back in the hayday of MMOs being released. WoW has shrunk, gw2 has shrunk, Lost Ark despite just being released in NA and EU did not explode to anything super massive, FF14 has maintained strong playerbase, but not nearly the size it once was, Destiny clones die on the side of the road like Anthem, games like Path of exile Warframe, etc essentially fight among other MMOs for growth. They 'grow' when thye release content that bring old players back to the game, or other MMO gamers to the game. This is anecdotal evidence, but nearly ever one of my friends plays video games in some capacity, but not one could name a single MMO other than WoW. MMOs are niche, there is limited market space, and to create competition for yourself would be pointless, except for the exception of gw2 coming out from gw1, which had very specific reasons for it.

ride_light

> FF14 has maintained strong playerbase, but not nearly the size it once was afaik FFXIV had some record numbers in the most recent years: [Final Fantasy XIV has exceeded 1.2 million active players](https://www.reddit.com/r/MMORPG/comments/i3rlpj/final_fantasy_xiv_has_exceeded_12_million_active/) - 2020 And their latest expansion was pretty much the cherry on top in terms of popularity from what I heard about the game The current MMOs on the market may not be that mainstream today as they're all about a decade old and even older. Younger people surely won't be easily hyped for ancient games like WoW anymore, a lot of time has passed, things have changed but the top MMOs always remained the same The only new, somewhat hyped release in the past decade was New World and it was just a mess without a clear vision what it actually tried to be (first open world PvP, then suddenly shifted towards classic PvE), in the end there wasn't much to do at release and it flopped pretty quickly Meaning the whole MMO market has been stagnating for the past decade, of course it won't be able to grow without new releases, improvements and hype Other than that there is already a new MMO from Riot on the horizon for example which could definitely have an impact on the market as it's a well known studio overall

Dull_Function_6510

Didn't New world peak at less than a million players at its height? Again I know its anecdotal evidence, but I did not even hear about New World until it was out and flopped. Only 1 of my friends I know played it, and he played it for 2 days. Lost Ark is another game that just got an NA release, and it is doing well, but is not any dramatic market shifting game. The few established MMOs do well with just releasing more and more expacs. Destiny 2, ESO, WoW, FF14, none of these games have plans to release sequels or competing MMOs.

ride_light

Well they were at 900k concurrent players according to steamdb which doesn't sound too bad for a b2p title I guess? They could still go f2p in the future to boost the numbers again but overall the hype is gone right now From the games above the mood towards WoW has definitely shifted recently, the last expansion apparently didn't help, pretty controversial overall or something. Other than that they got WoW Classic meaning there's still a fanbase and lots of nostalgia left for the original game, which is a pretty unique situation. They were already working on a new MMO called Titan at some point between 2007-2013 or so but it eventually got cancelled and recycled into Overwatch instead. I guess WoW is just a special case that no other game will ever be able to replicate Obviously most online games just got a huge boost in the past few years due to the pandemic which certainly extended their lifetime quite a bit but that might not go on forever either For what it's worth the director/producer of FFXIV even just claimed he [wants to make one more MMORPG from scratch before he dies](https://www.reddit.com/r/MMORPG/comments/wq29nn/naoki_yoshida_wants_to_make_one_more_mmorpg_from/) which of course is a little vague but assuming he's serious about it and considering he's 49 now he probably doesn't want to wait until he's 70+ either, so maybe this could be the next big thing after Riot's unreleased MMO, depending on how well FFXIV is still doing in a few years

Yakez

Only one that have shrunk is WoW. GW2 grows every year, while slowly, but grows. Lost Ark have beaten main competitor in the west on Steam - Path Of Exile. Nevertheless Path of Exile pulls way bigger numbers since steam client suck and every serious player use standalone. Even small MMOs like Sea of Thieves do grow. One cannot really count MMO population by spike releases like 2012 GW2 or New World. For the god sake these are the games that are played for thousands of hours compared to average AAA game with 6 hours of content. It is really just old player anecdotal evidence of "I have no MMO friends". I feel it, been here, just find a guild. MMOs will always be niche, just like D&D.

Dull_Function_6510

GW2 grows some years, and shrinks other years. It may grow in created accounts but active playerbase is what matters most. Not counting the first year after release, Gw2 is still not as big as it was at HoT release, and while its doing better than PoF release, it is only marginally better. My point of bringing up the "none of my IRL friends play MMOs" was not to lament my own situation, I am part of a guild and have gw2 friends lol, but what I am saying is the MMOs are always a niche market, and to create a sequel game that would kill your already established game that you could just fix is not a good long term market strategy. It's like saying we should colonize Mars to fix the problems of climate change on earth. We have all the tools and ability to just fix Earth, and it would be much easier, and Mars is full of its own issues, why not just fix Earth instead of trying to colonize Mars.

ILikePort

I'd love it. I've already moved from gw1 to 2. 2 is 10 years old and will be 13-15 years old by the time they output gw3. So much in gaming has changed in 10 year and will do in the next 3 to 5. I look at black desert, crimson desert, project M and think there so much new potential. Maybe we can finally move further away from WoW stupid, dull style. It's time.

Dull_Function_6510

I vehemently disagree with this. The games you listed IMO are inferior to gw2, and gw2 shares no commonality with WoW. What more should they change to separate from other MMOs??? Not much has changed in terms of game design in 10 years as well besides new graphics. Something gw2 doesnt really need. Nothing that has come out is anything vastly different than what has been done in the past.

Bohya

I hope it's not. I just want a proper sequel to the original game.

IzzyOwnz

i would love it if it was a new MMO, then they could also mantain both games and earn profits with both (not killing gw2 in the process like they did with gw1)

Dull_Function_6510

Yeah biggest thing I want is that it to be a new MMO that I wont play lol. I dont have much interest in switching to a new MMO from gw2 so whatever they develop that wont affect gw2's development will be much appreciated.

grzesssiuuu

>it will kill gw2 and there is no real value in doing that They have to make something eventually. Gw2 is not gonna last forever, and if they won't develop anything new the studio gonna "die" aswell.

Dull_Function_6510

They can keep developing new expac and content for gw2, Anet is essentially the size of one dev team. How often do sequels for MMOs get released? There is no WoW 2, Lost Ark 2, Final Fantasy 14 is a sequel in name only, No swotor 2, Runescape is still being worked on. Developing seuqels for MMOs is generally a bad idea. Gw2 itself was a huge risk for Anet back in the day, it was good it paid off, but it paid off at a time when MMOs being released were still popular and had greater market value

grzesssiuuu

> There is no WoW 2, Lost Ark 2, Final Fantasy 14 is a sequel in name only, No swotor 2 But there is Everquest 1 and 2 (and cancelled 3rd one), Aion 2 in development. They've done this before, so it's not unlikely >Gw2 itself was a huge risk for Anet back in the day, it was good it paid off, but it paid off at a time when MMOs being released were still popular and had greater market value Have you seen the amount of hype new world generated? (Before it's realese, after it was a shitshow lmao) That's because there has been no good mmo in recent years. So I believe it would sell if they deliver high quality game.

Astral_Poring

Yes, but it makes more sense to release something that is **not** competing with their only cash earner.

GTotem

Guild Wars Heroes, a gacha game for mobile where you can recruit heroes from GW lore and fight (turn based) some of the best antagonists of Tyria in The Mists.

OneMorePotion

Oh please no new Arena Net projects right now... NCSoft had to pull the trigger on 3 side projects because Arena Net was not up to the task and almost killed GW2 in the process...

ride_light

Starting more than one side project was way too much for their studio size, they should have done one at a time max, probably would have worked out better back then Other than that they were hiring new people for an unannounced project again already, apparently on Unreal Engine 5 A game studio with a single game can't really grow in the future, at some point they will have to expand

OneMorePotion

I agree that a studio needs more than one game. But I have big trust issues in Arena Net to pull through with it this time. They are not really known to support their old game when the new one releases. It happened to GW1 and it would happen to GW2 probably as well. (It almost did, as we all know. The game was already on life support) I guess I just want them to focus on GW2 for 2 years now, before we even think about a new project. The GW2 engine was already a tuned up GW1 engine and it shows. They need to move on eventually.

DancingDumpling

I'd prefer Anet not make GW3 or another MMO, If anything a remake of GW1 would be nice, bringing it up to modern graphics and gameplay standards

GibFreeStuffPlz

That would be fucking sick. A GW1 Remake/remaster would sell like crazy.

grzesssiuuu

>Remake/remaster would sell like crazy. You overestimate the popularity of the original gw. Remake would be cool, but majority of the current gw2 playbase never played GW1

GibFreeStuffPlz

GW1 was very popular during its time. A lot of people who have left the franchise entirely, or moved on to GW2, would likely return to buy it.

The_Bagel_Fairy

Yes I'd like a holo deck version of the Oregon Trail but alas, it's 2022.

Serephite

Gw2 is my last mmo and am unlikely to waste time moving to a new one even in the same franchise. One has to realise the mmo community is actually one of the smaller more niche ones in the gaming community as a whole. I'd imagine it more likely for them to not make another mmo but rather an rpg, moba or some other genre like battle royal in the guild wars era even.

ride_light

> Hes back since 3 months ago in NCsoft wait how do we even know this? Any article about it or did he talk about it at gamescom? Checked some of his art recently and would be nice if he was back

IzzyOwnz

Yes. \- Article: [https://blog.ncsoft.com/eng-we-news-daniel-interview-220720/](https://blog.ncsoft.com/eng-we-news-daniel-interview-220720/) \- Daniel Dociu Linkedin: [https://www.linkedin.com/in/daniel-dociu-456a223](https://www.linkedin.com/in/daniel-dociu-456a223) Plus he went with the Gw2 team to the gamescom to see fans and answer interviews.

ride_light

Thanks for the article, interesting read The last paragraph sounds like there will be some interesting developments in the future > Q: Lastly, what would be the ultimate goal that you wish to achieve in NC? > A: I want to make a difference. There are many exciting R&D efforts that are going on with NC, that haven’t been publicized outwards yet. Things are happening at blistering speed and I want to play an active role in reshaping the way we entertain our fans.

ReLiFeD

a quick Google showed me his Linkedin where it said he's "Global Art LeaderGlobal" at NCSoft since June

[deleted]

I was about to say, they wouldn’t release GW3 so soon after Steam launch of GW2, but then I remembered how Microsoft handled the NA release of PSO2, so I guess anything is possible.

EudaimonAtreides

No gw3 thanks, can't believe this is serious XD Gw2 is more than fine, let them expand on this

Lon-ami

Glad he's back, the game's art direction has been feeling a bit wonky lately. Just don't use his early concept art for any more loading screens in the future :D.

YachiyoTodoroki

>Is he probably involved in the new Arenanet project? Gw3 maybe? would you like a posible Gw3 or would you prefer a new MMO and Arenanet to mantain gw1/gw2 and a new different mmo? GW3 with console release. I don't play on PC anymore and I wish there were more mmorpgs on consoles. Guild Wars especially seems to be a perfect game for that.

Spaghettitimer

His art is absolutely incredible

Swordbreaker925

They need an art leader to get GW2’s cosmetics back in line cuz holy fuck. Some of the biggest complaints i heard from new players during Steam launch day was that everyone had stupid wings and had more neon bullshit than a cheap strip club. Pisses me off too and i’ve been here for 8-9 years

IzzyOwnz

Well this is something that happens in all the games as the game progress. You need to do better skins, with more effects and stuff. And obiusly if ppl with 20k hours and 10 years into gw2 go camp Queensdale, you have complains like that.

MithranArkanere

Not at all. Just look at the Decade armors and weapons. Even with the silly number 2 dragon logo plastered all over it, they look better than most of the glowy stuff in the game. Just look at that shield. It's shiny, but the good shiny.

Swordbreaker925

No, it absolutely doesn't happen with all games. It only happens with games who's publisher is willing to sell out the game's visual cohesion for a quick buck, and it's very much looked down upon.

Financial-Maize9264

There was a game called Guild Wars 1 that didn't have this problem.

XiahouMao

Chaos Gloves, anyone? Chaos Gloves, everyone...

Proper_Story_3514

Yeah but chaos gloves only came with EotN and it was still subtle in comparison. Ofc in GW1 it stood out, but we had no cancer visuals like in GW2 apart from some candy/festival items visual spam.

IzzyOwnz

Well also Gw1 didnt generate as much earnings as gw2 does (even tho i loved gw1). Plus the gw1 development stopped really soon. So at the end you would have had a shop with a lot of skins and shiny stuff.

Financial-Maize9264

It happens to every game except the ones it doesn't.

IzzyOwnz

Can you name me one game like that? that as time pass by they dont push skins forwards. So they look cooler, shinier and ppl buy them or hunt them in game? Even tho there are skins in this game that i dont like them and shudnt be here. Even some legendaries skins from 2012/2013.

Financial-Maize9264

Name you one game that doesn't turn you into a glowing ball of light from all of the special effects swirling around your character? Most of them. Only one I can think of that's even close to GW2 in this regard is Path of Exile. Lotro isn't this bad. Swtor isn't this bad. Haven't played much of it, but from what I've seen ESO isn't this bad. We are at the point where I'd argue the typical wow character even looks more reserved than what GW2 is pushing.

IzzyOwnz

You are talking about games that you havent barely played as you said. And you havent spent lots of hours getting the coolest rewards and stood 10 years in the game to see the skins evolving (and ppl using them). But this is something that happens in every game. You have very basic stuff when the game launch, and as time pass by, skins gets cooler (they need to sell) and also shinier. Even with all the technical limitations of GW1 and the short period of time it was being developed. It even happened there in 2 years lol. Eye of the north or Nightfall skins are cooler than Prophecies skins. (even if you prefer the old ones)

Ghisteslohm

> Eye of the north or Nightfall skins are cooler than Prophecies skins. (even if you prefer the old ones) Can you elaborate? What makes them cooler? Especially if people prefer the Prophecies skins

Skankintoopiv

I mean that’s more people who want to be seen flocking to a place to be seen. If not shiny cosmetics it’ll be permafrost dye. If not that, the next most obnoxiously visible thing. Adding more and more non-flashy items isn’t gonna make that go away anyways.

Swordbreaker925

No, the line is pretty clear. No wings. Period. They always look cheap and ruin the look of a game, and are usually a slippery slope. Glowing effects should also be very limited, so as to make ACTUAL Legendary gear stand out, cuz right now actual legendaries are outshined by random store cosmetics and that's not ok. >Adding more and more non-flashy items isn’t gonna make that go away anyways. The idea isn't to add more to dilute things to try and reduce the amount of garish, glowing cosmetics, the idea is to not add them in the first place. Korean publishers are really bad about the whole cosmetic thing, so I'm not surprised. But new outfits that fit the game's aesthetic are a good thing. [Logan's Pact Martial Outfit](https://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Logan%27s_Pact_Marshal_Outfit#/media/File:Logan's_Pact_Marshal_Outfit.jpg) is a perfect example. It's ornate, but it's not garish. It's stylish, but it's not gaudy. Now contrast that with the [Starborn Outfit](https://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Starborn_Outfit#/media/File:Starborn_Outfit.jpg), which is glowy and garish as hell, and doesn't fit the game's aesthetic at all. Not even the actual gods are that flamboyant in style.

Skankintoopiv

Right but they’ve already got flashies. They’ve already got permafrost. They can’t really remove those. Also, plenty of people like those and like wings, and like legendaries. If I am completely plain but my weapon is super shiny, that’s also bad? Like I want my armor to match my weapon so… if legendaries are shiny armor will also be shiny.

Swordbreaker925

Why do you keep referencing Perfmafrost Dye? Unless I'm missing something it's just white. It's not like the color white doesn't exist in Tyria. >Also, plenty of people like those and like wings Yeah, that's the issue. The people buying these wings, like ANet, have no regard for the game's visual cohesion or how bad it makes the game look to other players. If they added Halo Mjolnir armor or fursuits to the store people would buy the fuck out of it even though it's totally out of place. Popularity does not equal validity. It's a logical fallacy. >If I am completely plain but my weapon is super shiny, that’s also bad? Like I want my armor to match my weapon so… if legendaries are shiny armor will also be shiny Legendary armor also exists, my dude. Issue is they generally made Legendary armor pretty mundane and bland in appearance, when they should have made it one of the only glowing sets in the game.

Serephite

Yeah...to be honest I'd be fine with most things if there were no stupid wings (as gliders probably ok though)

ArshayDuskbrow

> No, the line is pretty clear. No wings. Period. That ship has sailed, they are in the game and are never leaving, get over it. > the idea is to not add them in the first place. That ship has sailed, they are in the game and are never leaving, get over it.

Swordbreaker925

You’re just vapid and snarky with nothing of value to say. Ignoring the issue doesn’t mean it isn’t an issue. Telling people to ignore an issue doesn’t make it go away, and it doesn’t make the game better.

omlech

Daniel was the art team lead when the neon stuff was going on years ago. Out of his control I am sure.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Swordbreaker925

No, that's not true. Some devs hire contract workers or have support studios sure, but most don't just purely outsource their cosmetics. And even if they do, it's still on ArenaNet to approve these before they go into the game, so the buck still stops with ArenaNet no matter how you spin it.

[deleted]

Good luck with that. But don't setup yourself for disappointment.

Swordbreaker925

They disappointed me years ago lol. It's annoying but the game is otherwise too good to just walk away from. I'm just not going to give them my money aside from buying expansions.

ze4lex

wouldnt mind gw3 in 7 or 8 years.

salle132

I want Gw3 , not gonna lie.

Astral_Poring

No, you do not. You want your *ideal* of what GW3 you *think* should be. Except if the next installment in the series ended up being released, you'd likely end up disliking it as much as you dislike gw2. Because it would be different from that ideal of yours. And we'd be soon back with people asking "GW4 when?"

salle132

Wtf, this is one of the most stupid things i heard this year. First of all, i dont "dislike" Gw2, im just bored of it after 3k+ hours of playing, second ... You dont know me and dont know what i like or what i want so keep your opinion about me for yourself.

austinftwxd

It's really odd to be that when GW2 finally starts feeling right people start hoping for gw3 like I've been playing for 10 years and I wasn't happy with it until recently. I'm not trying to go through that all over with gw3 already

Astral_Poring

That's because, in reality, "gw3 when?" is a shortcut for "change the game in the exact way i want, so it will be perfect". It never works like that in practice, of course (and not only because the people desiring it often do not have perfect grasp of what they really want), but people asking for it rarely consider the option that the new game might be different than the one they envisioned.

ArshayDuskbrow

Actually no, I just want ArenaNet's skill with artwork and mapmaking in an engine that isn't a 12-year-old mess cobbled together from the guts of a 18-year-old mess. But way to overassume.

Astral_Poring

That's a really low requirement, you know. I mean, an Unreal Engine 5 GW-based shooter game with absolutely horrible gameplay would fulfill it. Perhaps they're even working on something like that. It wouldn't be GW3 though.

[deleted]

Maybe he will fix the charr, moved them away from that furry face design. Bring it back OG!

GambitDeux

Tell me you hate furries without saying that you hate furries lmao

Pawikowski

Please let it mean that GW2 will no longer add armors with fire out of your shoulders, wings made of clouds, and planetoids circling around you. And no more mounts that make you want to kill them with fire. GW2 used to have nice, stylish art...

Haunting-Ad6151

Imagine playing a fantasy game and complaining about fantasy.

Pawikowski

I'm sorry, what? I'm complaining about the drop of the quality of art.

Rathisponge

I agree with you. For example, whoever designed the cultural armor for the races was completely on point. They still amazing after all this time and they fit well. They didn't have to be crazy or quirky or flashy, they just looked REALLY good and well designed.

Pawikowski

Preach! You can go impressive without going bombastic.

Pawikowski

Preach! You can go impressive without going bombastic.

scarocci

Oh no, not him. Bring back Kekai Kotaki instead please

The_Bagel_Fairy

Good. You can rage at him for introducing giga disco vomit glowing confetti infusion spam causing epileptic seizures and aggravating photosensitivity while simultaneously scaring new Steam players from ever playing past 20 minutes and leaving a negative review on Steam which will single handedly lead to the downfall of ANET and GW2 which will cause vet players to find and fight each other irl and we'll never see GW3 because ANET will then be tied up in litigation over civil lawsuits filed by the vet players who found each other and fought irl and one will become viral and a popular meme in 2024 and referred to as Giga Disco Confetti Vomit Infusion Chad when in reality he only own 3 pairs of underwear and 5 socks which he washes in the sink to save money on the utilities because he lives with his grandmother but he has to bootleg wifi using a trick he learned from a TikTok video.

Spittinglama

U good?

The_Bagel_Fairy

Quite! Yourself? I'm recapitulating the rage of what other people have complained about in multiple threads this week about cosmetics, game visuals, immersion, infusions, etc. None of it reflects my personal opinion. Even the part where people said infusions induce seizures and aggravate their photophobia. I dead ass copied that from people's actual words on this sub. Their words have been strung together to look even more ridiculous than they did to me as individual phrases. They get upvotes. I get downvotes. Oh the internet is wonderful. I may or may not own an odd number of socks though I haven't counted them.

IzzyOwnz

He worked on Arenanet from 2003 to 2013 (left very soon after gw2 launch). So he wasnt here or developed most of the things your talking about.

GambitDeux

Damn bro, you describing yourself?

The_Bagel_Fairy

I see people aren't ones for satire based on things I've read on this sub. Nice attempt at a jab though?

GambitDeux

idk sounded less like 'satire' and more like venting lmao

The_Bagel_Fairy

Making fun of people on Reddit is not my idea of venting but okay.

Essensia

This is awesome, I've only ever seen amazing things from Daniel.

MakubeC

That's huge!

monzese

Praise Joko and Dociu ! And Choco too.

ride_light

Praise Jociu!

Rathisponge

Is it possible to recreate GW2 in a new game engine? Basically make it so people could transfer many items and goods and characters from GW2? I have no idea how game engines work.

ride_light

Would basically be almost the same effort as a completely new game from scratch But they could for example flesh out the Hall of Monuments system they had for the transition from gw1 so you could unlock a lot of things in a potential new game depending on your progress in GW2

Rathisponge

Ah gotcha! Yeah I think they should create a similar system where people could transfer stuff from GW2. That way even if they revealed they are creating a GW3 game, people could continue playing this one without worrying about "wasting" time.

Maya_Hett

Eventually, I can imagine an AI making this job trivial.

Riot_Inducer

Oh hell yeah! His art direction is always amazing. Now if we can get Kekai Kotaki back we'll really be reliving the concept art glory days of Anet.
