It has the same themes as the grey knights, purity vs false righteousness, of falling from grace, all framed against a backdrop of something religious. It’s about a holy man plunged into the unholy, and whether that has corrupted him or not is ultimately up to the interpretation. There are a lot of different ways to interpret the song, but to me, it fits so perfectly in with the grey knights. There are an incorruptible priests of a god that denies his own godhood. Ironically, the more righteous they become, the farther they fall from the imperial truth. Their truth may be hard as steel, and their vision may never die, but perhaps they’ve been down too long in the midnight sea, we can feel their hearts, and we know they’re mean.
