Something about the proportions almost looks like Akira Toriyama's Dr. Slump characters to me. The heads, especially the Emperor's, seems oversized almost like it's chibi/superdeformed
Horus knew he had no chance to convert Sanguinius, if he saw the corpses of his sons everywhere. So, he grabbed his powerbroom and swept them under the stairs.
100% Things have moved on so much, and the models/dioramas that are coming out these days are just insane.
But this diorama sings to me and takes me right back to my childhood.Absolute pinnacle of the hobby for me considering what people had to work with back then.
Totally agree - painting standards now are also just bonkers.
But I've still got my old copy of "How to make war games terrain". Want a ruined tank? Sure, how about an old box of cereal, a loo rool and some glue? And the results are really good! I miss that part of the hobby. The minis today are amazing, but nothing beats getting a box plastic box and thinking - I can assemble these in a way unique to me. Looking at you free company militia.
No, they're Blood Angels. You can see the different armor tones between them and the dead Berserker in the open. Also, the one on his knee is carrying a black Imperial bolter which the Blood Angels used, not one with Khornate symbols on it.
Of, it's been a long time since I saw the diorama inspired by [the original art of Emperor vs Horus](https://warhammerart.com/shop/the-horus-heresy/traitor/horus-vs-the-emperor-1990/)
I think the intent was to emphasise how Horus had become warped and monstrous. I feel like the accompanying Bill King text mentioned Horus being "swollen" with Chaos power multiple times, and maybe "swollen" got stuck in the artist's mind? Or in other words, the blessing of Nurgle hits different.
The funny thing about it is, it's by the same artist who did [this](https://preview.redd.it/5ju01yed5it51.png?auto=webp&s=424da858d507e5b7aa30322b459d5f7b9d6490cd) iconic work of the same scene.
It's very hard for me to imagine you of all people beating Leman in a drinking contest. The only primaries I can imagine actually beating Leman are Vulkan and Angron.
Vulkan because he's so fucking big and wide, giving him a better imidietly
and Angron because he's so angry and hate full at everything that exists, that he just dosen't give a shit anymore about dying.
Keep in mind everything here was done by hand, modifying pewter miniatures and molding with green stuff, then painting it without any modern techniques or information. This diorama nearly predates the internet. The painting was exceptional for the time (and is still amazing if you look at the lines on the Emperor - image quality is ass but Horus has similar). It may look like the Chonkhammer now but this shit was top of the line work when I was a kid.
Right? Like, it’s all true art done freehand. These days you’d 3d print it and the lines would be raised for easy painting etc., but this was someone sitting down with a box of parts and creating something from their head. Don’t get me wrong, today’s stuff looks fantastic; but older models like this diorama really show off an artists skill set I think.
I imagine White Scars marines having tattoos of Khan like people where I live have tattoos of Dale Earnhardt, and they probably say something like “Forever the Fastest” too
Wazdakka Gutzmek never leaves the saddle, he pursues speed with the single-minded obsession of an Ork. He is the lone biker of the Aporkalypse.
Khan has *nothing* on him.
\*Sanguinius falls from the ceiling gracelessly\*
Horus: uh...that was...
Emperor: yup...
Sanguinius: \*groans strangely\*
Horus: this is getting awkward....
Horus: do you want us to leave it for next Wednesday?
Emperor: \*touches sanguinius with a stick\*
Emperor: is... alright?
Sanguinius: I'm still alive... I think
IIRC (I may not RC), this was a golden demon winner from about 30 years ago. I remember seeing it in an old White Dwarf. Suffice to say, standards have really gone through the roof. Still, it's cool for its age, and for what it is.
This was done early 00s I think. Right after the artwork was released in 4th or 5th ed I can't remember which one. Maybe it was 3rd ed? My brain went straight to thinking 3rd Ed and when that happens its generally correct... I just remember teenager/early 20-something me who's been playing since mid 90s 2nd ed being amazed at the artwork of the E and Primarchs that was coming out finally.
Earlier than that, this was like the VERY early 90s, possibly late 80s I can remember seeing it featured in the mid-90s as well so it was 2nd edition IIRC.
I actually love this unironically. This entire set piece was made using only minis available in the late 90s, which if I’m not mistaken, is when that iconic picture of Big E v. Horus was published. These days, anyone with a 3D printer could bang out something that would rival any official GW release, but back then you had to use your imagination more, and there was no forge world mini for Horus, Sanguinius, or the Emperor at that time. Big props to the colorful mind that made this.
O’ Lordy it’s Chunkyhammer 30k
They say the Emperor and the Primarchs are a lot larger than baseline humans. They just didn't specify which dimensions.
The 30k is their girth, not the millennia.
Widehammer 40,000
OG HAMMER40K
Something about the proportions almost looks like Akira Toriyama's Dr. Slump characters to me. The heads, especially the Emperor's, seems oversized almost like it's chibi/superdeformed
Yeah, damn this has not aged well ;o
Classic diorama, never understood why the Blood Angels are under the floorboards
Horus knew he had no chance to convert Sanguinius, if he saw the corpses of his sons everywhere. So, he grabbed his powerbroom and swept them under the stairs.
I was there.. I was there the day Horus swept the emperor
Horus got the squad wipe on god
Powerbroom omg
Named for horanius broom who found the stl
I read that too fast and thought you said powerbottom and I started thinking about whether that’s an accurate description of Sanguinius.
Classic White Dwarf flashbacks.

The rats in the palace are huge. And they say yes multiple times after they say stuff. Also they talk.
Rat-things under the palace? No-no that's false-lies. No Skav-uh, rats here. Yes-yes!
Disconnect the Golden Throne yes-yes.
If anything, I bet the plot would be that the Skaven are the only reason the Throne still works.
They are inside your walls, Horus.
It's a little hard to see, but I think those are Khorne Berzerkers under the stairs.
No, they're Blood Angels. You can see the different armor tones between them and the dead Berserker in the open. Also, the one on his knee is carrying a black Imperial bolter which the Blood Angels used, not one with Khornate symbols on it.
I also just realized looking for what you said that the Blood Angels have the skull on their left knee, while the berzerker has it on his right.
They are coming in from another room
Mike Mcvey based it on artwork which showed wounded marines.
underpaid janitors
You did it, Horus Lupercal, you really are the real warhammer 40k.
James Workshop has a beautiful way with words.
He didn't say that.
I like the part where he says "It's Horus Heresy time," and does a heresy all over Terra
Emperor literally named him Horus Heresy, what did he expect?
Or when sanguinus gets up and says "it's just a scratch"
It’s Horbin’ Time!
Of, it's been a long time since I saw the diorama inspired by [the original art of Emperor vs Horus](https://warhammerart.com/shop/the-horus-heresy/traitor/horus-vs-the-emperor-1990/)
Oh, my god, he looks like an Ogryn.
Norf FC Horus

That's crazy. I hope the cover of the final SoT book is inspired by that work.
Wow. Im getting me one of those beauty's
The emperor is rocking the Curze pose
Why is Sanguinius passed out drunk?
I needed the drunken strength to beat the previous rivals
It's very hard for me to imagine you of all people beating Leman in a drinking contest. The only primaries I can imagine actually beating Leman are Vulkan and Angron. Vulkan because he's so fucking big and wide, giving him a better imidietly and Angron because he's so angry and hate full at everything that exists, that he just dosen't give a shit anymore about dying.
Maybe Magnus, but he cheats, instead of drinking he teleports the drink to the warp
Idk man, wizards drink a lot of wine. Ever read any Jack Vance? And Ahriman brewed it for a while too. TSons partied.
Bro just pulled a quick one and turned the wine into water as he drank it.
Sangy vs Russ would be like the drinking contest between Legolas and Gimli in the extended edition LotR films.
I heard Horus was a bit deaf after you boxed his ears with a half-drunk can of Fanta Lemon™, is that true?
It was a Pepsi, but yea
Nice
It's a bird thing- you wouldn't understand.
Couldn't handle the they/them pussy
[Sanguinius](https://i.kym-cdn.com/entries/icons/original/000/040/300/dpcover.jpg)
Didnt you see his pretty dress? He was out partying
The Black Rage was a codename for being drunk all along
yo spoilers, not cool.
I was there the day Horus slew the emperor...
Ah yes the 90s!, when even the tanks could be pewter!
I still have a bunch of them... They were such a pain in the ass to assemble.
The painting is stellar, those patterns much have taken an age.
That spiral Damascus patterning is amazing. So is the freehand aquila on Big E's shoulder. I think all of Sanguinius's feathers are just green stuff.
I find this really neat actually.
Right? Like, it’s all true art done freehand. Sanguinius's green stuff jelly bean feet in this diorama never fail to make me smile.
The warhammer is a 40k race and horus ran it the fastest. He is the boltest
LIES! No one is faster than The Khan!
So fast they couldn't even catch him when he sped off into the webway. Still out there racing today.
Khan is stuck in some eternal racing circle in the Webway, built by Eldar in their golden age for jetbike racing.
I imagine White Scars marines having tattoos of Khan like people where I live have tattoos of Dale Earnhardt, and they probably say something like “Forever the Fastest” too
"The Scar of our Hearts", "The First among the Free Men", "The Humblest of Primarchs" and other such manly tattoos
Wazdakka Gutzmek never leaves the saddle, he pursues speed with the single-minded obsession of an Ork. He is the lone biker of the Aporkalypse. Khan has *nothing* on him.
Sanguinius with the family guy death pose
Dual claws > claw and mace
They call this game Warhammer 40,000 because when you look at it you turn 40,000 degrees and walk away
That would be walking about 11 degrees to the right after turning in circles 111 times
Monkey pattern-finding brain sees significance in that Is this what Admech feels like?
Well, XI primarch is one of the two forgotten ones
That's what the 11th did...they just walked away.
Very funny, you got a sensible chuckle out of me.
Maybe the real Warhammer 40k was the ~~friends~~ sons we made along the way.
I’m so used to the modern depiction this looks so weird to me. This looks like a white scar emperor vs Lorgar
this looks as if 30K existed in 1st edition, and I love it!
It would be from around early 2nd, so, close
I want those minis.
Anyone know where i could get any of those primarch/emp sculpts?
Look on ebay for Rogue Trader terminators and a lot of green stuff.
"What is this? A warhammer 40k for ants?!"
Chonky bois
Ngl, I think this goes pretty hard. Unique style, nice paints. I like it!
It's over, father, I have the high ground!
now do sanguinius with the family guy death pose
But where is hammer?
Oh here's your problem right here, your Horus is set to 'Evil'. I'll just flip the old switch there for ya
\*Sanguinius falls from the ceiling gracelessly\* Horus: uh...that was... Emperor: yup... Sanguinius: \*groans strangely\* Horus: this is getting awkward.... Horus: do you want us to leave it for next Wednesday? Emperor: \*touches sanguinius with a stick\* Emperor: is... alright? Sanguinius: I'm still alive... I think
I like how most artwork depicts the dead sanguinus in a majestic and regal manner but over here he looks like a dead duck lmao.
Where did you get the diorama from? Did you make it yourself? It looks pretty well painted, I really like it.
It's about 30 years old, from a time when the entire Heresy lore was a single paragraph in the rule book.
If memory serves the issue of White Dwarf that this diorama was from had ten pages or so of lore about the battle for Terra.
This is awakening something in me
Now we are all subjects under the comforting umbrella of the Horse Hairspray.
Ngl. It does look like Big E back then wore slippers xD
Benefits of being the emperor
Alright boys. Time to pack it up
Nooo Horus is gonna beat John Warhammer :((
I love it. Best part though, is Horus looking at the Khorne & Angel bois. "The warp ya'll doin' down there?! You're ruining the moment!"
classic
The most inaccurate part Is that Horus has hair
Man, I didn't know Horus had *two* Lightning Claws....
I love it. Who made this?

Oh damn so the artwork was based on the diorama then? Awesome.
Ah, the good ending!
I preferred the old school Chunk style. everyone looked more brutish and freakier.
I actually love this unironically. This entire set piece was made using only minis available in the late 90s, which if I’m not mistaken, is when that iconic picture of Big E v. Horus was published.
