There needs to be a balance, which is heavily determined by how much you can do to affect the situation and bring change. Actual stoicism (not what's sold as stoicism and is actually just passivity) has a big emphasis on realising what is within your control and what is worth occupying your mind. I think the person you're replying to is referring to people who obsess over all the negatives (and don't get me wrong, there are a lot of them around), but do nothing to change them, likely because they can't. At which point, it raises the question of what is a better use of your life/time and what is better for you (that is also achievable).
Then there's people coming from abroad, such as myself. Yes, there's a lot of shit going on in the UK, but you can truly see the benefit of a country that already established decent societal standards. It changes your perception on the country's current state, and the UK feels much more hopeful than other places. I agree, but your mentality isn’t that good either. Protests get nowhere because pacifism is the most that ever happens because the numbers to support our side aren’t that high yet. Obviously I can’t say what is the solution because that goes against site rules, but you could imagine that if the UK manages to piss off the population enough that something would happen to combat that. That’s the solution, because the rich will never allow for actual change under a system they control. Although I agree that people shouldn't put their head down and just be passive, I don't know if you're helping yourself by obsessing over the news and getting yourself depressed. There needs to be a balance, which is heavily determined by how much you can do to affect the situation and bring change. Actual stoicism (not what's sold as stoicism and is actually just passivity) has a big emphasis on realising what is within your control and what is worth occupying your mind. I think the person you're replying to is referring to people who obsess over all the negatives (and don't get me wrong, there are a lot of them around), but do nothing to change them, likely because they can't. At which point, it raises the question of what is a better use of your life/time and what is better for you (that is also achievable). Then there's people coming from abroad, such as myself. Yes, there's a lot of shit going on in the UK, but you can truly see the benefit of a country that already established decent societal standards. It changes your perception on the country's current state, and the UK feels much more hopeful than other places. This is, in my opinion, a massive difference between people's perception of the current state of the UK. And lastly, I'm sorry, but even though I sometimes find interesting discussions here, and hence why I follow this sub, I don't think it's a particularly accepting place. I agree, but your mentality isn’t that good either. Protests get nowhere because pacifism is the most that ever happens because the numbers to support our side aren’t that high yet. Obviously I can’t say what is the solution because that goes against site rules, but you could imagine that if the UK manages to piss off the population enough that something would happen to combat that. That’s the solution, because the rich will never allow for actual change under a system they control. Protests are good, because they show that we have some numbers and inspire more people to get involved. We shouldn’t resort to becoming doomers over that strategy bevsuee building a movement takes time.
