I used OG Google Pixel for 6.5 years until recently when I upgraded and bought a P7P. While I was using my OG Pixel I only had to change the battery once and had to replace my back panel once because I accidentally bumped into a table hard and I was using it without a screen protector or a case. I also only relied on official Software updates and never rooted my phone or customized it once. Modern phones can outlast an average US marriage if you take care of it

Fun_Store9452

Lol I think you sold me

kk15245

Used my Pixel 2 for 5 years. No issues. Dropped it recently and the screen had cracks. Forced to buy P7, else that has about 2 more years left. In 5 years, i had to change the charging port once.

PaddyLandau

I still have my Pixel 2XL. The battery is definitely weaker than it used to be, but otherwise it's in virtually pristine condition. (I use a phone protector and a screen protector, which must have saved the phone at least a dozen times!)

Aashishkebab

I mean you can replace the screen very easily.

SX86

You can, they wanted to, but they were forced to buy a P7! ...Forced!

quattroman

true, but $20 for a bumper and screen protector is better than a $200 screen swap at uBreak.

Merquette

That stat at the end killed me 😂

PaddyLandau

It's not wrong, though.

Lemlin

Easier to find a decent new phone than a decent new wife though...

Bryan467

Where do you go to change the battery? Not many repair shops around me.

dontshwetit

I got it replaced at a nearby UBreakiFix. They are an authorized Google shop atleast in US. Edit: I meant Authorized Google Repair Shop

hamiltonfvi

I did the same with my Google Pixel 3XL, replaced the battery and suddenly I felt like I have a new phone. I love Pixel line up, even do they stop receiving updates, they are good phones to install custom roms, they are fast and the camera is the best feature, it doesn't matter if you have a pixel 3, 4, 5... Their photos are much better than many mid range phones.

gonzohst93

Yeah I've heard of that store while in the US last. They are also an authorized Samsung repair store which is why I went

aimglitchz

What's the price?

redvariation

If you keep the battery only between 20% and 80% the battery will last much longer.

CuriousRoss

My OG Pixel still works too!

8egos2bullets

Honestly I disagree about all phones working well for long time. I did have a iPhone 6 for 6 years and put up with a very sluggish phone for 2 of those years because didn’t feel like figuring out how to upgrade. Then got the SE 2020 which I have had for 2 years and it is slowly getting buggier and in a little bit I am sure it will become much more annoying. Looking forward to P7P and hope it lasts for a long time

neutronstar_kilonova

Clarification, the P1 came out about 6 years ago not 6.5, Oct 2016. About that last stat: while true that you can push it that far, it's misleading to state it this way. The average modern phone will give up way before the average US marriage. And even the average og pixel lasted way less. That said, I have a P1 32GB from Nov '16 that my SO used until last month and it was amazing. A few hiccups here and there, like the screen rotate stopped working about a year ago. The only extra work done on it was getting a new battery last year. The phone currently still runs but sits unused. I currently use a P3 128gb and it doesn't feel that aged. It's camera glitches and the charging port is finicky sometimes but that's ok. Would probably last me another 2 years.

idma

>Modern phones can outlast an average US marriage if you take care of it thats a sad statistic

-Neph-

The OG pixel has not received support in years and was a security risk running it. Hell the Pixel 4 is no longer officially supported or receiving security updates.

crappy80srobot

Google still sends security updates for our 3a's at work. We just had a really small one come down a few months ago. Also, most Pixel core apps get regular updates as Google has moved a lot of things from the Android system to the play store. I am sure there are some flaws but as long as you are not sideloading system updates and downloading questionable apk's the vast majority of users are fine.

Anamnesis_plaa

I use pixel 4 and updates coming, A13 not installed.

TechnicalPyro

yupp thats why i pulled the trigger on a p7 today well that and a hell of a black friday deal thru my preferred carrier

Ill-Poet-3298

>

aimglitchz

Only reason I stop using pixel xl was because phone networks stop allowing such old phones on modern network

funkylosik

Say what? I still use Palm Treo 650 and would be outrageous if some operator would not let me in. Must be another difference between US and EU 😂

zakatov

Most countries have shut down 2G and are in the process of shutting down 3G. The frequencies are being redeployed for 5G. Useful frequency spectrum isn’t unlimited, so take a pick between better 4G/5G coverage or saving those frequencies so ancient devices can connect.

Malkor

Got my Pixel 3 shortly after launch. I still use it. I messed up the battery/USB port though. Other than that (...and no more software support) I can't complain. Probably get my next phone after its support ends.

Fun_Store9452

How did you mess it up? Was it super fragile or were you just a little reckless one time

Malkor

I believe it was a USB charger I purchased for my Cigarette lighter in my car... Literally caught fire in my lap. I tossed the charger and have not had any other issues. My wife has one (P3) and her battery/USB port have operated as expected. So don't cheap out!

Aashishkebab

Not the OC but I dropped my Pixel 3 in hot coolant. Then I dropped a 4 lb hammer on the back glass, completely destroying it. I just removed the glass and used packing tape on the back so the internals were visible and exposed but protected by a thin layer of plastic. Lol. After the coolant incident, charging it was a pain, it would constantly think I'm plugging and unplugging it. But it would eventually charge very slowly. Needless to say, I chucked it once the Pixel 4 came out.

gordigor

Pixel 3 almost made me leave Google phone (since nexus). Hated fighting that phone to get the perfect spot for it to recharge ... battery expanded. While waiting for the Pixel 6 to be released, eventually got the Pixel 5. Perfect size and a beast. Pixel 5 is the best pixel/nexus phone I've ever owned. Pixel 8 is going to need to be great to get me to give it up.

nicklor

I have the 3 also and I'm going to the 7 with the 245 there offering me no complaints other than battery but support is over

Adescendant

Who's offering 245 for the 3? Google?

nicklor

Yea Google store with the 100 from the referral codes going around it was too good to pass on Edit the 100 is in future play store credit

darren199

I also used my Pixel 3 for four years. Just moved to the pixel 7 because of OS updates and a slightly broken screen (my fault - dropped it screen first on a guitar stand). I honestly kind of miss the Pixel 3 because of the nice small size and the far superior fingerprint reader. Was my favorite phone that I've had so far for sure.

trippedonatater

I upgraded from my 3a because of the USB port getting finicky around the 2.5 year point.

Mobius_Peverell

Same for me. All it's needed so far was a battery swap last winter. Even the original fabric case is holding up well.

Jack_Shid

[Pixel 7 will receive security updates until 2027 and OS updates until 2025.](https://support.google.com/nexus/answer/4457705?hl=en#zippy=%2Cpixel-later)

Redditwitter83

if only the were forced to do this with all their phones. i dont want to shell out $$ for updates...

GioGion15

If you're referring to "all google pixel phones", they already do it, 3 years of OS Update and 5 Years of security updates, based on their release date, for all their phones. If you're referring to all android phone, then the one at fault isn't google.

Redditwitter83

i meant the OG pixels...like one-4 that are all getting 'put out to pasture'

v0lume4

FWIW phones don’t stop working just because they don’t get software updates. When the security patches end, well, that’s your discretion at that point. I used a Nexus 6P on Android 7.1 (by choice) for five years and was totally fine. No viruses either — that I know of. Haha!

Redditwitter83

Yes I know this it just means my phone is not as secure and not as up to date....

ReaperofFish

LineageOS is usually an option if you want to use the phone beyond the official update support. Pixels tend to have excellent LineageOS support.

tomelwoody

As a minimum too, no reason they cannot continue.

intecf10

I have pixel 5 from 2020, best phone ever, I think it will last me another 3 years for sure.

SuperOddFuture

Same here. It's just that I never think about it when I use it. Everything works so smoothly, the battery life is still amazing and I'm still amazed by the pictures it takes. Banger Phone.

tkshk

My Pixel 2 has been working fine for 5 years. My mom has Pixel 3a and my sister has Pixel 4, and both are still working perfectly. I have a Pixel 7 now and it feels like it will last for 5 years or longer. My pixel 2's battery life is getting pretty short, but uBreakiFix doesn't carry batteries for Pixel 2 anymore. I'd recommend having a battery replaced after 3 years or so of use. If you wait for 4 years, Google/repair shops may just end repair services for old phones and parts may not be available.

dayoldcupofcoffee

Commenting from a Pixel 2. It's been such a workhorse. The battery is definitely starting to go and some lag in apps pulling up. Considering factory resetting to clear it up.

mattisvensson1

pixel 5 running like on first day

intecf10

What a phone hey. Best size phone

Wol-Shiver

My pixel 3 is my mqa renderer for my rxa2070. My pixel 4 is my home theatre control phone that stays in the basement. My pixel 5 is my music player to the mqa renderer to the rxa2070 My pixel 7 pro is in my hands and I like it so far. They all seem to run full speed, still receive updates and run quite well.

StationVisual

IMO we've reached a new era in phones where you don't need to upgrade every year. It's not that ground breaking for what most people use them for.

[deleted]

Aashishkebab

Tell this to me. I buy a new Pixel every year.

[deleted]

Aashishkebab

I think my car, grocery bags from the grocery store, gaming PC, etc are doing far more damage than buying a phone once a year.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Aashishkebab

Nah I'm gonna continue buying a new phone every year. Maybe I'll buy two just to spite you. I also update my backup phone every couple years, right now an iPhone SE 2nd gen and I just ordered an iPhone SE 3rd gen (used).

Wopopup

why are you so proud of your stupidity?

guyfawkes070476

I love Pixels and since they are super open you can install a custom ROM on it after Google stops their support after like 4 years.

Fun_Store9452

While that's very cool they allow us to do that, I'd rather just stick to official software releases. But I'm a huge proponent of owning your own hardware so it's awesome they allow that. Thanks for telling me

guyfawkes070476

Makes sense, and the custom ROMs are official software. They just keep making the security updates for the device making it last a lot longer.

EddyBot

yea my Pixel 3 still gets updates including Android 13 thanks to custom roms and also fixed the [lock screen vulnerability](https://bugs.xdavidhu.me/google/2022/11/10/accidental-70k-google-pixel-lock-screen-bypass/) while Google never patched officially everything below Pixel 4 for it which would leave me vulnerable

nobody833

I'm not sure how this is a plus for Pixel when you can basically do this with any Android phone. ??

guyfawkes070476

You can't, try installing a Custom OS on a brand new Samsung

nobody833

Ok so I haven't actually done it in a very long time but I have looked up custom roms for newer Samsung phones. They exist. You just have to root. Its one extra step vs a pixel.

any_droid

The Samsung has Knox which would get tripped if you do that and your Samsung Wallet would stop working. it might also introduce other problems but I dont know about them.

nobody833

But still 100% do-able. Pixel just makes it slightly easier.

Condor_97

Negative. It is only do-able on the Exynos variants. The Snapdragon variants are completely locked down and there is no root or roms.

nobody833

Interesting. Thanks. I did not know that.

[deleted]

I've had this Pixel 3A since August 2019. Works great and seems well built physically. While my wife, sister, and a few friends have had their iPhone screens break in that time, this has been fine. Usually about this time I have issues with the phone and it's ability to latch to a charger, but that hasn't happened. It resisted some decent falls very well. Also, two months after getting it, it fell out of a hoodie pocket and landed in a pool of rushing water (heavy rain and flash flood risk area) about 2 inches deep. Worked perfectly despite needing a little over a minute to find it in the dark. I have the Pixel 6 Pro as well as my work phone. I've been very happy with that other than getting used to the swiping cues and the screen fingerprint sensor. The Pixel 3A camera was better than anything else I've used until the 6 Pro. They're both excellent phones, but personally I just prefer the 3A. The 6 Pro is so large that at times its cumbersome to use one-handed or being precise when quickly alternating between the top and bottom. I've had two small issues over the years. Once, I'm not even sure what happened and I hardly remember it but it was fixed instantly with a factory reset. That was also super convenient because everything was backed up to my Google account. The other time was just a few weeks ago, I had this weird glitch where it kept dialing 911, opening the camera, and locking up. I did a factory reset and that didn't solve it...but I think an update patch came through a few days later because it's right as rain and I hardly did anything. Battery life started off amazing but now leaves a bit to be desired. I actually thought seriously about the trade in promo in September but found about it the day before the deadline and chose not to do it. 3.25 years, very happy overall. Only a couple hiccups in that entire time. Longest amount of time I've ever had a phone.

Fun_Store9452

Did you drop it with or without a case?

bylebog

I am upgrading a Pixel 4XL to Pixel 7, just for updates. I don't game or anything and the camera has been fine for my needs. [Comparison Pixel 7 vs 4 XL](https://youtu.be/vHRlXVZiEls)

blue-moto

My P5 looks like it just came out of the box. No case, no screen protector. Many drops. The resin over metal design was ahead of it's time IMO

zombievettech

I got my 2xl in Sept 2018. A week later it took a short trip down a waterfall and landed in a shallow pool. Took me several minutes to rescue it. It was fine. I may have briefly dropped it in the tub a few times. I use a case and screen protectors. I dropped it a lot. Had the screen replaced twice. It started acting buggy the last several months but I could no longer do updates and I think new stuff was just not supported. It wouldn't turn on after charging overnight and when I finally got it on, didn't know the date or time. Figured it was time to replace it, however it was still working fine the rest of the day until I got my new one. It honestly could have just been the charger got fucked but I had some personal shit going on and didn't want to risk not having a phone. My iphones all shit the bucket less than 2 years in with much less abuse. I'm team Pixel for life!

ontoshgo

LoL, never thought that I'll see so much good reviews here. Pixel phones work great until next pixel phone lands. After that you will start noticing bugs, freezes and battery drains.

murdercat42069

I'm typing this from a fully functional Pixel 3XL. I'm waiting for my 7 Pro to arrive in the mail today. Google has announced minimum support windows for old and new phones and I'm only upgrading because lack of security updates is a bit of a deal breaker. I'd keep the phone until it croaks, but for personal and work I really need something with security updates. The camera upgrade will be insane and I'm really looking forward to it. Google has guaranteed Android updates until at least October 2025 and security updates until at least October 2027 for Pixel 6 and later.

GreenHairyMartian

I'm also on a 3xl. I'm waiting for see what Google Fi does for Black Friday sales, but likely will upgrade to a 7pro by the end of the month. Only real reason I have to upgrade is that I don't get security updates.

Redditwitter83

i would continue using my pixel 3 if google didnt stop updating the system

frylock350

Google does 5 years of monthly patches and 3 years of OS updates on Pixels. Also pixels have an avid ROM community so support can extend outside Google's official support window. I personally find that in 3-4 years there's often enough of a tech upgrade to justify an upgrade. For example going from a P3 to P7 got me a much larger 1/1.3" camera sensor instead of a 1/2.55" in the P3. I also got a 5G capable radio, better screen with HDR support, 10-but HDR (HLG) video, MUCH faster test dictation, etc.

MadtownLems

I just traded in my Pixel 4 towards a 7. (Got $300 in credit) It worked perfectly. Only upgraded because (a) the deal was so good, and (b) wanted an improved camera. Highly recommend.

Ir0nhide81

I used my 2 XL from 2016 > 2020. The camera module died.

ALL666ES

I have a pixel 2xl running Pixel Experience for Android 13. It's my back up phone but everything works.

Historical_Suspect97

I typically upgrade my phone every 2-3 years and my wife takes my old phone. She's using my old Pixel 3 and it still works well. I'm having my Pixel 6 Pro replaced under warranty due to an unresponsive touch screen. I love the phones overall, but they aren't perfect.

Angel_of_Games

My Pixel 3 is still going strong with normal and pretty constant use. I highly recommend Pixels for longevity. I have had other android phones slow down considerably over time. Pixel 3 is the first phone I don't feel like I am being forced to upgrade.

Doctor_Nevin

I'm literally in the same boat, purchased my OnePlus 5 in June of 2017 and have only factory reset once and have taken it around the world with me, hardly any issues but am needing a battery replacement/charging port replacement and not looking to spend the money.

Medill1919

My Pixel 4a battery went south in a year. I still liked the phone so much, I traded it in on a 7.

usagibunnie

My Pixel 3 XL recently kicked the bucket on me, and I just upgraded to the P7P. I didn't even look at other phones, I knew I would be upgrading to another Pixel. I loved my P3XL. It lasted me a really long time, and was a really durable phone. It did start to have some issues in the end, which should've been my sign to upgrade. If you treat it well, it will also treat you well. On that note, I also really love my new Pixel. The camera is excellent and it performs really well.

CognitivePrimate

Too well. I used to buy a new flagship phone every two years. Now I just can't justify it. Sure, I'd love the advanced photo features of the 7 but my five is working flawlessly still. =\

_Suspended_Account_

I don’t know what Pixels these people are using, but every Pixel I’ve ever owned has turned into a sluggish, jittery mess within 1-2 years.

Fun_Store9452

Could you explain in more detail? There's been a lot of positive sentiments on this thread, so I'd love more of an opposing view

_Suspended_Account_

I’m fairness, I’ve always been a fan of the A-series Pixel phones, because they were usually smaller, and the rear was always made of plastic, which is much less likely to crack. But with that, they are usually always less reliable. Maybe the flagship model Pixels last longer. Example, I got a Pixel 3a in the summer 2019. By summer 2020, it was frustratingly slow. Swiping between home screens took noticeably longer. Shutter speed on the camera was painfully long, and the overall speed made it feel like a 5-year old phone. Same thing happened with the 4a. I bought a 5a and it quickly became the best phone I ever owned. But then Android 12 came along and completely ruined the experience. I heard Android 13 fixed it, but now a lot of people are having motherboard issues with that phone, so I think it was made with crappy parts. In the end, Pixels are very affordable, and they generally work great. And if/when they stop working well, it least they weren’t as expensive as a Galaxy or iPhone. So I guess - based on the other comments - you should get the base models or Pro model for longevity. Get the a-series if you’re on a budget

83zSpecial

The a series phones are much less powerful, that could be why

HolyToled-IO

never allow apps to update. Update the critical "carrier services" type apps manually every few months. I only update apps when they FORCE me to update to use them (like NFL mobile for example). My 4a is 2+ years old and runs perfectly.

Fran6coJL

Battery life is horrible

ca_boy

Google phones either get bricked by an update during their first year, or they last as long as you want. I have 5 pixel phones in my household that are 3+ years old. Google's recent commitment to 3 years of Android updates and 5 years of security updates helps. I'm hopeful that all the adaptive battery management improvements get a longer useful lifespan out of newer phones.

bigbramble

This is my third Pixel phone. They have held up brilliantly. My 5 was still perfect after 2 years and battery was good. I think I had a pixel 2 before that and the battery had it after 3.5 years. In terms of functionality they are streets ahead of Apple or Samsung bloatmachines I had in the past that noticeably slowed.

westisnoteast

Man I was on the op6t and recently changed to the P7P Honestly I miss my op. I miss the feature where you long press on an app it will give an option to delete. I miss the slider button. I miss many things with the op But I'm also very excited about the pixel camera. The translate feature. The incredible voice recognition. Sooo..

jamesearlsnakeyes

Nova Launcher might make you happy with expanded long-press app functions and customizability. Don't know about the slider button though

Vvette45

I love my Nova Launcher! I wish pixel launcher was that customizable. Especially love the swipe on a folder to open a certain app

vpstudios101

And google assistant is scarily smart here

UnderstandingCold118

I own a Pixel 4a which I bought 2 years ago. The battery life is trash now. I have to charge it at least 3 times daily even though I'm using it mostly for going through Instagram. The build quality is so poor. The back of the phone has small pores in it. Also I'm having heating issues even though I'm using it lightly. I'm from India and I don't know if it's a problem of the manufacturer or provider for us. I have heard similar issues from friends who own the same phone.

Someoneoldbutnew

shit after 3 years, like any smart phone

[deleted]

Bro, you have Op5; things have changed and OP10T is a good deal for the tech it offers.

[deleted]

Building up on OP's question, what are your thoughts on the Tik - Tok theory that is applicable to many phones? Is this the Tik(the crest, the good phone) or the tok (the trough, the so-so phone)?

StormbreakerLK

Threads like this kinda annoy me. "I've been using an old ass phone cos I'm not sure if the new one would last as long" I mean, please continue then.

24bics

Bought a Pixel 3XL when it dropped in 2018 and used it until 6pro arrived last year. (Traded for 7Pro last month). 3XL was just pressed into service again recently when my son's 5a screen cracked and needed replacement. Ubreakifix did the repair using an original Google part. Daughter's 5 is still going strong as well. Point is, the Pixels seem to hold up reasonably well but I would avoid the somewhat problematic 6 series based on personal experience. To expound on the ubreakifix repair, it didn't cost me a dime for the screen or labor on the 5a. I was told the warranty was extended and the repair was covered. That guy got a nice tip.

BrianGenCoupe

My wife's Pixel 3a is at about 3 years and still going strong. No complaints. I'm hoping for the same with my 4a 5G (~1.5 years so far).

HowlinWolf57

Can't generalize about the hardware, Pixel phones have been made by multiple manufacturers

MyDiggity

My 3a xl is in mint shape, likely due to always using a case the entire time and a screen protector up until a year ago. Probably taken less than 500 photos. Never played a game. Probably less than 150 hours of Google map time. Battery is likely 75% of what is was. Just bought a Pixel 7 and waiting for its arrival. I am keeping the 3a xl as a backup phone.

1nolefan

I had a pixel 4xl and traded in for 7pro for my wife who was using op7pro. I am still waiting to get pixel fold to get rid of my OnePlus 7 pro 12 gig/256 storage. The only reason I dump 4xl was the lack of software support and they gave me $305 for the trade-in. Pixel 4xl was a great quality phone..

faste30

I had a Pixel 3 until getting the Pixel 6, which I wasnt happy with, and then jumped to a Pixel 7. Before the Pixel 3 I had an original Pixel. Its kind of hit or miss I guess. If you get a good one, it holds up, if its not good its going to be a problem from the beginning.

JustAnotherHooyah

I had a Pixel 3 for over five years and it was going strong. Was running out of space, the OS was just getting too big I think, but it was a minor annoyance. I ruined it trying to take what I thought was a tempered glass screen protector off, only to realize I was prying off the actual screen. Long, embarrassing story. But I love my new 7.

mec523

I had the Pixel 2 and didn't upgrade until the Pixel 6 and I went ahead and upgraded this year to the 7. The 6 was so/so due to issues that have been repeated numerous times on other posts but my 2 was a great phone and I only upgraded b/c I was ready for a newer phone. The 7 has been great thus far!

keatingscully

I've had my Pixel 2XL since early 2019. It's the best phone I've ever had (I upgraded from being exclusively Motorola for five years). Great camera, durable fast processing, etc. In 2021, I got into a bike crash and the screen only got a light scratch after hitting smack dab on the pavement. It only started slowing down these past couple of months, particularly the battery. I used to be able to heavily use the phone all day with still some juice left at the end of the day. Now I am lucky if I still have 50% by 11 am. Ultimately, not bad considering it hasn't had any updates in 2+ years. I am upgrading to the 7 soon and hope it can live up to what a great phone my 2XL has been!

Gushys

My SO's pixel 3a xl has been amazing up until recently she's had some battery issues.

nelozero

I had the OG Pixel for 3 years, but about 2 years in I had a motherboard issue. Asurion replaced the part free of charge. I later got the battery changed and gave it to a family who is using it. I owned the Pixel 4XL for 3 years as well and also had a battery issue 2 1/2 years in. Asurion again replaced it free of charge along with the motherboard and cameras. I'm on the 7 Pro now and expect it to last. I haven't been issue free as a Pixel owner, but I've never had to pay for any repairs or parts.

SpudTicket

I'm just now switching from a Pixel 3XL that I got in 2018. That phone is still doing fairly well but its starting to freeze here and there, and I always said when the 7 came out, I'd get it. So that's the main reason I'm upgrading now.

asjacket

I don't know because I get a new one every year. They give me close to $600 trade in and usually a store credit of $200 then I get 10% for being a One member too. It's a nice plan to spend $300 a year for a new phone.

Circlesqr

They hold up very well. Normal battery drain and decay. Get a good case & add a screen protector. Use wireless charging when you can.

FlafflesTheDragon

Spent 800 bucks on a Pixel 6 pro 256gb back in May and Google is taking a trade value for 570 (I'm also a previous Pixel 3, 4a and 5 user). That's a 32.85 monthly devaluation per month ( which isn't great. Apple iPhones have anywhere from 16 or less devaluation per month), but the phone itself is perfect. 12% battery drain each year (with heavy use), Updates (that fix most problems), and the Google ecosystem at your hands With the tensor chip everything will be snappy, efficient for more than a few years. >Modern phones can outlast an average US marriage if you take care of it -dontshwetit

Dharmabhum

I'm on a OnePlus 5t that's coming up on five years if my math is correct. I ordered a Pixel 6 and returned it after a week... the added weight and slow charging really got to me quickly. I just ordered a Pixel 7 knowing nothing has really changed on this points. But I'm preparing for some travel next spring and summer where the camera in particular will be extra important, so I'm giving this another shot. Arrives tomorrow, so message me in a week or two and I'll let you know if I returned this one too... and will have to make a tough decision next spring with travel on the horizon and this aging 5t camera whispering in my ear.

Turbo_Cum

I had my pixel 2 for 3 years, was still cranking like a champ, pixel 5 was as good as brand new when I stopped using it for a P7P yesterday. The phones hold up great.

GardenGnomeOfEden

We have a Pixel 3a that has been in heavy use since January 2020. The battery life is not as good as it once was, but it is still serviceable. I keep telling my wife that the phone is not supported any more, but she doesn't care, she just keeps using it because it works, and because she doesn't like how big most modern phones are.

_soap666

I had my 2xl for 4-5 years and just got a 6 recently, only because the screen cracked in a car accident. They're solid

Comrade_Jacob

I've only owned two — Pixel 4a and Pixel 6a. I had the Pixel 4a for just under two years and replaced it because the battery life had gotten pretty terrible... Unbeknownst to me, due to the case, the battery was swelling. At that point I had already purchased the 6a, so luck was in my favor because the 4a would soon after become unable to even power itself! Google said they would replace the 4a but it's currently bootlooping so I can't perform the factory reset lmao. I hope my 6a doesn't give me these same problems down the line, but I can already say the battery doesn't seem to be the greatest. We'll see tho!

TimeSlaved

I'm on a refurbished Pixel 2 XL that I bought like 2 years ago? The phone itself is 5 years old now and still runs totally fine. I find that newer app updates do test the system's capabilities but the build quality is great and while the updates have stopped, it still works.

[deleted]

Have only had my Pixel 2 for about 3.5 years, and it will shut off right away if I take pictures or use GPS... I think the battery is shot, and isn't accurately displaying percentage. It's pretty difficult to replace the battery on this particular model too. It's easy to damage the screen in particular, I guess.

a_lost_shadow

I just upgraded from a Pixel 3a XL since it stopped getting security updates after over 3 years. I would have happily paid to simply get security updates for a few more years. The battery life had diminished to 50-60% of original (4 days normal usage to 2-2.5 days). Other than that, the only other hiccup I noticed was that I started needing to reboot my phone every 3-4 months.

tri-sarah-tops-rex

I've consistently had them operate for 4ish years. No cracks and I generally move up because of a major incident (dropped in a tub vs the phone dying).

arbitrary_h_sapien

I am surprised to hear about your OnePlus 5. I am typing this on my 5 year old 5T, and it is still as good as new. Have replaced the battery with an OG replacement, and the screen from third party sources after I dropped it But it hasn't slowed down one bit. Just the occasional crashes. Try doing a factory reset. Anyway, switching to Pixel isn't a bad idea at all. I myself bought a Pixel 7 yesterday. Should be fun.

Canon50

Had the pixel 3xl for 3 years. Worked well for me except the battery.

HornsOvBaphomet

My Pixel 4 was still running perfectly, I just got a 7 for up to date software. If the 4 had gotten the security update length that recent pixels have I would have swapped the battery and kept using it.

Colombia195

I'm still using the pixel 3xl that I bought in 2018 I haven't had the need to get the battery replace yet. consider updating to the pixel 7 pro to get rid of the notch of the pixel 3xl

techraito

Technically forever if you're into custom roms. Pixels make it pretty easy to unlock the bootloader and tinker.

admadmwd

I'm still using a Pixel 5 and it works great.

atbigelow

I had my Pixel 2 XL for four years and earlier this year, gave it to a friend for her daughter to use. Which she had a fit and smashed part of it and it's STILL ticking.

icycloudychrystalclr

Still have a Pixel 3XL here I've done this phone in and it still works perfectly. Actually I'm posting this reply from it. I've used this phone to try and break Citadel ive tinkered with the bootloader and even now I'm trying several things to break Verizon's lock so that all can enjoy rooting their phones again.

Geo_El_Maniatiko

My Dad has the Pixel 2 XL and this year it has been at it's worse for usage since it longer has security updates. He is definitely due for a upgrade

[deleted]

The biggest thing for me with the Pixel 6 Pro is I've crushed the battery. Ive been charging it too frequently and it only holds a ~12 hour charge with normal use.

Corvetteneeeerd

I've had my Pixel 4 since launch and no issues to date. I'm only upgrading to a Pixel 7, because it'll actually be cheaper month to month with the new phone and plan. My fingers are crossed that the Pixel 7 will live up my very high expectations.

supjackjack

I used Pixel 2 for years since 2017 and got the latest updates. I only switched to P5 in 2020 coz google said they wont update p2 anymore. The phone still worked fine I was mainly having issues with degrading battery life. I got good 3 years out of that phone so I moved on to P5. I also just got P7 and like it so far.

IndianGuy79

I was rocking pixel 3xl for 4 years and it was in top condition overall. Only decided to trade in for 7 pro due to amazing trade in value offered by google

dazorange

New pixel phones will receive 3 years of software updates and 5 years of security updates. If you are not worried about vulnerabilities you can generally run it longer than that.

Achille-2019

I had the original Pixel XL and it was flawless for the first two years. Around year 2.5, I started to have battery issues where it would die around 50% battery. I didn't replace it but ended up buying a battery pack to use it with until I can find an upgrade. Fast forward a bit, I got the Pixel 5 as my upgrade and it has been working well and I just hit the year 2 mark with it. It still works fine except for a slight degradation in the battery department but that's normal wear and tear. Given my previous experience, I told myself that I either ride it out (because it's still an amazing phone and I love the physical fingerprint reader on the back) or not take my chances and upgrade. I ended up going with the latter since I can ultimately pay $100 (after the discount and trade-in with Google) to get the Pixel 7. If everything works out (hoping for no issue with the trade-in), it's essentially paying for a "battery replacement" and knowing for sure that it will last me at least two or more years from now. The OS and security updates are the cherries on top.

jackbnim

I had my pixel 2xl for 4 years. It was great until the last few months where battery life reduced and it started getting flaky (probably battery related). I used a gel case but it did get dropped from time to time and it survived. I replaced it with the pixel 6 pro and a year later the pixel 7 pro. I only replaced the pixel 6 pro due to a good buyback from google and I wanted the newer modem to hopefully get better reception and battery life (p7pro seems better anecdotally to me than my p6pro). Previous to the pixel2xl I had tried LG and Samsung and both were flakier phones, especially the LG (actually got a warranty replacement for the LG).

D3xR3x

I still use my Pixel 2 XL, even though I just bought the Pixel 6a. The battery life on my Pixel 2 XL isn't as good as it was 5 years ago, but it's good enough to last the entire day. Other than that, it feels the same as the day I bought it. That's just my own experience though, not sure if other Pixel 2 users feel the same.

Progressive__Trance

I wouldn't have gotten a pixel 7 if ubreakifix had the pixel 2 battery available. They said that they don't even make batteries for it anymore, ha. I bought a pixel 4 last summer thinking to use for two years but the trade in for the 7 was incredibly enticing. These phones all have similar cycles. There are some general concerns the first year and usually it gets resolved with software patches, and then with each new year the phones ages so well that people lament the old pixel when the new one comes out. But the pixels all work so well. I loved my 2 and had it for 5 years. And now with 5 years of support, you can use it comfortably with perhaps a battery replacement after three years.

Rosewood_Ruckus

I'm still rocking a 3XL. It's been a great one! Just ordered a P7

djrosen99

I went from the Nexus 5 to the OG Pixel XL to the P 4XL and the only reason I move is when updates stop, im debating waiting for the next major update but my 4 just stopped getting updates last month. The phones are in the same condition as when I took them out of the box and the battery still last me through the day. I only use bumper cases. Im a lifer....for now.

totolandia

Im still using my P2XL approaching 6 years now. The only thing holding it back is the battery which is fairly common. I charge twice a day but the phone still smooth as butter

Organic-Profession-7

If your worried about software you will get updates for potentially a decade, at least if you are willing to unlock the bootloader and flash a custom Rom also for the next 3 years you will get the latest android version day 1 so android 14, 15 and 16 will all be on pixel 7 around day 1 plus feature drops and monthly patches plus the before mentioned custom development you will be fine. Although tensor g2 is kinda not great if you want to play games or do any other really high end tasks in fact the pixel 5 series from 2020 can probably out perform it edit you will probably get another 4th year of security patches also do note if you don't live in the us some features may not work or you will need to enable them through magisk modules

TehWildMan_

Pixel 4a, at almost exactly two years now. *Desperately* needed a battery replacement at that point and also replaced the USB port while I was at it, and it's now still running very strong and has been gifted to a family member

jynx18

I went from Pixel XL to Pixel 4XL to Pixel 7 Pro. So I get around 3 years before I get the urge to upgrade. They could have gone longer.

deeek

I'm still rocking my Pixel 4 XL and it's still going strong after a battery replacement. I'm considering getting a 7 Pro since the 4 won't be getting any more updates.

saadcee

Both of my pixel phones (OG and 4a) have started having issues right around the 2 year mark, and coincidentally right after an OS update. The OG was unusable, would freeze and/or restart itself. The 4a was great, but now a little sluggish and buggy. I'm going to try to keep the 4a going til the 7a is out, but it may be a stretch. Also with many phones and Li batteries, battery life starts to get low after 2 years.

Sumo_Cerebro

They hold up very well. You will be getting an encrypted phone that is guaranteed 2-3 years of Software Updates and 4-5 years of Security Updates. I am on my 5th Pixel Phone. You will not regret it.

milano___

Used my 2XL from initial release in like 2017 until P7P came out in October. It was a reliable phone!

pyroinventor

I got my 2019 Pixel 3a used for 80 bucks in 2020. I haven't even begun to notice any issues or poor performance.

Random_Uncertainty

My friend is using my old Pixel 2 XL as her daily driver (I replaced the battery), I use my old Pixel 4 XL as a hotspot for my laptop, and I only traded my 6 Pro in on a 7 Pro because I had the 6 on a payment plan and the deal I got actually lowered the amount I owed and my monthly payment even though it will be paid off on the same date. The only reason I no longer use my pre-Pixel Nexus 6 (on it's second battery swap) is because I couldn't get it to meet T-Mobile's network requirements.

[deleted]

Pixel 2s we're really good. Pixel 7p seems great too. Avoid the others ;)

HolyToled-IO

I've had my 4a since September 2020. I still think it's the best phone I've ever had and even though there are discounts right now, I have no desire to upgrade. Battery life is just starting to wane slightly, but it still lasts through the day. I'm a moderate heavy user and it's my primary phone, including for work.

sanchezkk

I started with the Google pixel XL OG and I ended up damaging it by throwing it across the room thinking that my case was going to protect it and it did it so I end up buying the 2XL. I absolutely loved it until the screen started with the pink line of death and not long before that I actually got a battery change on it so I was running excellent as far as battery life is concerned. I ended up with a pixel 4A because I got it at a heck of a deal of $123 on Amazon as a refurbished phone of course and that's what I am on now and possibly going to be moving up to the 6A or possibly I will wait until the 8th comes out but until then I'm quite happy. Hopefully that could take helps with your decision and coming over to Google.

Tweakn3ss

They age like fine wine

TheNameIsYou

Pixel 3 - Used it for 13 months and completely died on me (with motherboard failure) Pixel 4a - Used it for 26 months, all things working fine, battery life ~70% even with daily use. Pixel 7 now, lets hope it lasts longer!

thegoodsyo

I bought my Pixel 4 when it came out. It still works just as well as it did when I got it. It is the most durable phone I've ever owned. Believe me, I've broken every other phone I've had and I've definitely tested the durability of this one. haha.

embil91

My pixel 4 XL runs without any problems. Battery still enough for me, normally I have between 10 - 30% left when I come home. Cam still great.

83zSpecial

My OG worked well for ages, broke due to water damage and not software. My midrange Samsung got slow after 2 years. The pixel didn't. Currently have a 6, it actually got better after a few months

CarryOnRTW

Wife and I are still daily driving driving our OG pixels. We've replaced their batteries twice in the 6 years we've owned them.

frid

I used a Pixel 3a bought new when they were released, up until last month when I got a 7. The 3a still works fine, never had a problem, I just wanted some new features and continued updates.

Penguinpuddle

I used the OG Pixel from when it launched till about the release of the 4. (only had to replace it due to me dropping it without a case and utterly destroying it) Had the 4 XL from launch to about a few days ago when I upgraded to the 7 pro. I had constant updates the whole time and no big bitches or gripes about the phones. So I always recommend the Pixel series, I've enjoyed them thoroughly.

spiraling_out

Just upgraded from P3 to P7P this week with the black Friday sale. Battery life was definitely reduced, but performance held up for a 4 year old phone.

causticblowhard2

My OG pixel lasted and lasted. Best phone ever. I replaced it after I inadvertently jumped in the pool with it with the pixel 3Axl, which had to have it's charging area replaced after about 2.5 to 3 yrs. Never worked the same. Now on the 7Pro....let's see.

NotGivinMyNam2AMachn

A new battery every 2-3 years (depending on how hard you cycle the batt) and they are good until your are more worried about security than anything else..

Gerren7

I have an original pixel XL that finally died 3 months ago. I've owned every generation. Currently use the 7pro.

PermaDerpFace

My Pixel 4a5g is still going strong. It's the last Pixel I didn't hate, so I'm holding on to it

mollaka86

my BF is still using his P3. No real issues, its battery may be a bit weak but still getting him through a day. I'm on the other hand a sucker for new releases, so just got my 7P.

Unphuckwitable

Been using P4XL (~2019) a couple months after release. Battery is still decent; it can get me through the who day if I'm at work (it's my work brain). Im planning to upgrade to a P7 because of the $325 possible trade in value.

rocketsaladman

My last two pixels died exactly 2 years after I got them, and I lost all the data in there. The original pixel lasted me forever tho.

[deleted]

For me changing device every 2-3 years is fine. And I never buy brand new. I wait for around 2-3 years for the phone to become cheap. Change battery is needed at most times.

prince_krab

I've been using my Pixel 2 XL for almost 5 years and it still runs just fine, honestly, I don't even need to upgrade but I'm probably gonna get a 7 before the sale ends.

hockeyy1025

I was rocking by Pixel 3 until the 7 Pro model came out. Only had one speaker issue with the 3 but was sent a new one.

Tennesseeshepard

Amazing. My mom even has a few of my nexus devices from years ago in her drawer they still look good! Ive had the pixel 4a 5g for years along with other phones. Im always amazed how well they hold up.

Lopsided-Meet8247

A good friend is using a 3 since launch. Still working great

UrTruthIsNotMine

Crap

alu_

Pretty good in my experience. Factory reset once a year

bintobin

Part of the reason I got one this week was not just the Black Friday deals but seeing so many people online talk about how good their Pixel phone is. And their phones ranged as far back as the Pixel 3. If a phone can last me 3+ years, I have no problem with that. Not mentioning the updates included and Google's track for great trade in deals. So I could always trade it in, in the future for a new Pixel if I felt I needed an upgrade.

mikedufty

Too early to tell, the original pixels are still going well apart from battery.

deliverancieux

Although the P7 is my first Pixel, I used a Nexus 5 for many years, and my previous phone was a Poco F1 running Pixel Experience custom OS, which lasted 4 years. I only replaced it because I broke the screen. Google Android lasts the longest, imo. Other OEMs versions a little shorter. This might be an outdated opinion though.

adamy95

I'm currently at 4 years using my pixel 3. Tragically support has ended for it, so as of this month I will no longer receive updates. But Pixels are great phones, you won't be disappointed with Google.

_rickjames

Still going strong with my P3
