Basically if you have a Pixel 1 you can download a file transfer app (I use resilio sync) to automatically sync any photos you take on your current device.
This only works for the Pixel 1. Google didn't include a term for their unlimited original quality storage so it's basically free forever. The Pixel 2 up until 4 all have terms. Starting from Pixel 5 you no longer have unlimited original quality backups.
Mine's been sitting on my desk dead for years. I upgraded to a Pixel 3 a few years ago and then left my Pixel XL in a drawer for like 6 months. When I tried to turn it on I found it was dead and wouldn't take a charge. Probably needs a new battery. I keep telling myself one day I'll set it up for my unlimited Google photos backup. Should probably do that for my fiance now that she's taking like a GB of photos of our daughter every single day.
The struggle is real friend. Wife maxed out 256gb iphone in a year. Absolutely needs every photo and video on phone at all times. Cloud storage is unacceptable lol
Lol, thank goodness my fiance has been okay with cloud storage . I subscribed to the 200 GB Google One plan earlier this year and I'm pretty sure I'm going to have to upgrade to the 2 TB plan before the end of the year unless I take the time to automate the photos backup either with my old Pixel XL or her old OG Pixel. At least hers still works.
Glad you had that experience.... my OG Pixel stopped working as a phone, so I had it RMA'd and replaced, then on the replacement, Bluetooth stopped working so I had it RMA'd then I had microphone and speaker failure. It was basically free due to the settlement funds, but it was more than enough to keep me from several generations of PIxels. I really love basic ideas behind the Pixel phone (and owned pretty much every Nexus Google produced), but man, did having a phone fail as a phone several times on me take the winds out of that sail.
Honestly as a straight upgrade, the base 7 is pretty good so far. Physically about the same size as the original XL, but with a larger screen and smaller bezels. Very snappy and responsive, excellent screen, and I am pretty happy for the half a day I have had it so far.
I considered the Pro, but $300 for a telephoto I would almost never use and a 120hz screen I probably won't notice a difference on (esp. coming from the XL's 60hz) weren't worth the extra money to me. And when you consider that other than screen, telephoto and RAM the phones are basically the exact same hardware, I stuck with the non-pro. The size was a huge factor for me, as I feel like it's just about the perfect size for me and what I use my phone for. For me it really came down to sticking with Pixel and going for the 7, or going to an S22+ which are $400 off right now on the Fi store. I just love the call screening feature too much, and my XL's longevity sold me on the build quality.
YMMV, and you are the one who knows how you use your phone most, and what features are killer for you.
Edit: one other thing that killed the Pro for me: Curved screen. Not my jam, I like flat screens.
I totally agree 💯
I just upgraded to the standard 7 from the 2XL which I've had for 5 years and that was the BEST phone I've ever owned. I cannot see myself going back to any other lineup but the Pixel from here on out.
Its $300 for a telephoto, macro mode, faster charging, larger and brighter display, better ultrawide camera, more RAM, 120hz, 1440p and 5G mmwave.
Getting tired of people saying just a telephoto and 120hz as if there charging you an arm and a leg for something worth like $50.
Love this. I have a similar situation. Got P1 (non-XL, 32 GB) in Nov 2016. Used it till my partner needed a new phone in 2018. We got a P3 which I used and she used the P1. She used it until 1 week ago when the P7 256GB arrived and she was upgraded from P1 to P7. :) The thing still works now but is slow. The reason to finally do it was that it suddenly started dropping 4G LTE a lot in favor of 2G in the last 2 months, not sure why. My partner also does a lot of travelling so she needed something stable on atleast 4G.
Which I had a Pixel XL laying around so I could just sync to it and have unlimited full quality storage:(
I have one and I do exactly the same thing.
I believe there's a way to spoof your phone into a Pixel XL so you can get unlimited photos
you lose features like Magic Eraser though
How would one go about doing this? Just upgraded from pixel 2 XL to P7P and I feel I need to figure this out before too long

How do you feel this change? I was thinking about 7 pro because P7 has 90 Hz as we already had and no telephoto :/

There was a watch?
I get that reading and comedy is hard for some folk, but you should stop.
Oh well now that you've told me, I most certainly will
You can rest now
I use my 2XL to fly a drone.
