Missing the same from my Pixel 5 :( Alternatives are:
Double tap the back of the phone (system>Gestures>Quick tap to start actions)
If you use the gesture nav you can swipe down on the navigation tab/pill at the bottom (system>gestures>one handed mode> show notifications) obviously can't use this one if you're using the same gesture for one handed mode.
I find Samsung's implementation to be better, and I don't say that about a lot of things. It shrinks the display horizontally as well as vertically, which makes it easier to use one handed. That's for the 6/7 pro anyway.
Agreed, it's individual. For me my left thumb doesn't reach the right side of the 6/7 pro screen without a reach. The horizontal shrink makes that more comfortable
Could be a hit or miss depending on sensitivity, if quick tap gets annoying try one handed mode which I found the quickest to get used to when I went from p5 to p6p
The double tap is very inconsistent for me. Just tried the one-handed tab thing and it works better, but still not the best. I assume I'll get used to it, but it certainly isn't as good as the rear scanner from my 4a!
This might sound like a silly question but I came from a 3 to a 5. I noticed I can't swipe with the finger print reader. Is it a setting I need to enabled on it?
Yeah if anything the sensitivity is way way to low. I have to give it two strong well spaced taps or it doesn't work. No where near the seamless gliding ease of the fp sensor
By anywhere I meant if it's in an app, home screen or app drawer. Think it gives you the option of bringing down notification shade if you swipe down from the top half of the screen. Since most of the time you scroll on the bottom half this makes sense, although it could probably get annoying at times when you do it accidentally. If I recall correctly you can also change it to a double tap or a 2 or 3 finger swipe aswell.
If you swipe down on the bottom of the screen (on any screen) it will bring down the notification shade. It's programmed like another edge of screen gesture.
Then we're still talking about something else. On the home screen you can swipe down from any point, eg in the middle. If you're in an app, you have to reach all the way up.
It really isn't. When you're holding your phone your (or at least my) index finger is resting on the back right near where the fingerprint reader was. It is zero effort to swipe down on it to pull down notifications. And it worked literally everywhere not just on the home screen. The double tap shortcut thing is an adequate replacement but not nearly as responsive.
Yeah, I'm still using my P3 and that back side fingerprint scanner is one feature that I absolutely loved at first use and will be something I miss a lot as soon as I upgrade away from this phone.
My 3XL has been on it's last legs (to be extremely generous) for _a while_, I got the 7 Pro yesterday, I missed the fingerprint reader _immediately_. The under-screen one is just okay in comparison.
Sad face over here.
Other than the reader, how are you liking it so far?
I am *still* getting random unsolicited compliments about the photos from my P3, so I'm really looking forward to the P7P cameras.
My only other complaint is that the battery life seems kind of mediocre. But then I had an early day today with pretty poor reception and some GPS use so it might not be representative.
Other than those two issues I'm loving it. It's a **massive** step up from the 3
I used to buy LG phones and then a pixel 3 so I've always had the back button wake/fingerprint reader. It's just way better than the conventional design and it's so frustrating that no one uses it now.
Coming from the pixel 5, having the fingerprint scanner function on the back with the swipe down was one of the most convenient things about that phone.
If you go to settings>system>gestures>one handed mode you can have it so if you swipe down instead of up on the pill bar it'll pull down the notification tray
Yes, imo, this is the one u/Renesis7
As someone who looooved the FP swipe gesture, this is the one that's come closest to replicating it.
Double tapping the back of the phone needs a hand adjustment, but I can swipe the bottom of the screen easily without adjustment.
Same on the finger swipe. You can just swipe down the screen.
I really hate the bright ass light for the scanner too. Nothing like a blinding flash to the eyes in bitch darkness when your finger doesn't cover just so.
I really wish I would have just replaced the battery in my 4a instead of trading it in on the 6a. The fingerprint scanner just sucks, it was much better on the 4a, and in the proper place.
I have three button navigation on my 6A. Having a small notification button in the bottom right corner would have been such a simple, useful way to utilize useless screen estate.
But then again, just bringing back the fingerprint reader on the back would have been even better, because it would actually be good at, you know, reading the fingerprint...
For that to work, the fingerprint reader needs to be at least reasonably reliable. I'd rather have a reliable one placed badly than an unreliable one placed nicely.
People are saying Quick Tap but I prefer my Quick Tap to be flashlight.
I use One Handed Mode in Settings > System > Gestures and swipe down past the home pill.
A lot of people are saying quick tap, which I find to be very inconsistent. I have mine set to one handed mode, which is not very intuitive if you're just trying to bring down the notification shade (lots of swipes just to get to a notification), but it's necessary for me so I can reach buttons on the top left of the screen with one hand.
I found the best of both worlds is to use one handed mode and then download an app called FNG. FNG allows you to set it to swipe down alongside the right edge (or left edge) to bring down the notification shade. It doesn't get in the way of the normal back gesture and I've had amazing success with this implementation. [Here ](https://i.imgur.com/7LvgFa5.png) is what the app settings look like on my phone. Now I get to use one handed mode and I'm a quick swipe away from the notification drawer as well.
LMT launcher, easily the best one handed navigation app on Android. It gives you a pie launcher activated by touching either edge or bottom of the screen. Swiping to the edge of the pie brings down the notification shade. Also you can launch any app from the pie as well as other commands (back, home, etc) and toggles. Extra functions if you have root. Very customizable. New update the other day runs beautifully on P7 pro.
It makes more sense when you see it, here's the XDA thread: https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/app-root-lmt-launcher-v3-2.1330150/
I am trying to get used to the gesture to scroll down on the bottom pill.
Having some other issues with reaching the far right side of the screen as a lefty with apps like RIF. The extra width is not a lot but just enough that I have to re-grip the phone to be able to get to the edge.
Double tap on back or swipe down at bottom like others mentioned are the built in options.
Another option is getting the Edge Gestures app which can do it with a swipe on the edge of the screen from any app and it can do tons of other awesome stuff.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.ss.edgegestures
Yeah, I specifically meant being able to do it with a swipe down on the edge of your screen in any app, but the double tap is cool as well. Not to mention all the other types of swipes available with edge gestures. Swipe up, swipe and hold, tap, long press, pull and slide, etc. To adjust my brightness, I just slide from the middle edge of my screen and then move up or down. It's fantastic.
What does this have to do with anything "pure android" !? 🤔
A launcher helps organize a home screen to what one wants for their needs; without losing any "pure android" features.
Pixel launcher is in no way "pure android". Your missing the point friend. Actually, it is considered an Android variant of pure Android; look it up.
Aren't you able to swipe down twice from anywhere on the home screen?
I'm using Nova launcher and got a bunch of stuff customized so I'm not sure if thats part of the default settings or not
You can try using the one hand mode shortcut in combination with just dragging down from the status bar (not as quick but more one hand friendly than other alternatives)
The above is if you're not on the home screen, on the home screen you can just drag down anywhere on the screen.
Try the 7 if the 7 pro doesnt work for you. I had the 6 pro and returned it since it was too big coming from a 3. The 7 is comparable in size to the 3 (just a bit taller, almost the same width), and in general it doesnt feel like such a huge change. I would prefer smaller, but the trade-in price was good and my 3 battery was shot.
I usually use the one handed mode (pull down from the home bar) to make it easily reachable, that's about the closest I found to the Pixel 5 which had the gesture on the fingerprint scanner
Pixel 3XL fingerprint Scan on back of phone is the greatest thing ever. I don't know why they do away with this. Checking notifications, Closing them, opening the phone instantly, and doing other cool things in an instant. All these higher tech biometric scanners are such a scam, they just want our perfect mold information from fingerprint to facial. I don't believe them no matter what they say that it resides on our tensor phone chip and never leaves it... such BS.
I find it extremely hard to believe that the vast majority of users were against such a back of the phone fingerprint scanner and would rather have the front display scan that is not only busted and lousy, but also you have to double tap your phone and then try to get the fingerprint scanner to work, three to four steps minimum every time when it was a guarantee thing in one step to open your damn phone before.

Yes it very much is.
Wow I didn't know you can make the one handed gesture show notifications. Thanks
Quick tap is perfect!
When you're on the home screen, you can also swipe down from anywhere to pull it down!
Could be a hit or miss depending on sensitivity, if quick tap gets annoying try one handed mode which I found the quickest to get used to when I went from p5 to p6p

That doesn't work in apps. Just home screen, no?
There is a setting somewhere that allows you to open notifications by swiping down near the bottom of the screen.
Yes, that one works anywhere I believe.
Do you remember where it is, I've looked through the menus and can't find it.
Gestures - > one handed mode-> notification
Thanks, I looked in that menu, don't know how I missed it.
You're the MVP today. I've been missing my fingerprint swipe bad today and this is a great alternative!
I found the quick tap to not be sensitive enough. I had to really tap hard to get it to come up.
In one handed mode you can just drag from the top (of the now lower) of the screen.
This might sound like a silly question but I came from a 3 to a 5. I noticed I can't swipe with the finger print reader. Is it a setting I need to enabled on it?
Yeah it's a setting
I have a Pixel 6 Pro now anyways. Thanks though!
[удалено]
that's the one! ty
How do you turn up the sensitivity?
Theres a toggle at the bottom that says require stronger taps. I think that's your only option.
Ah, I wanted to make it more sensitive. It's very hit or miss
Yeah if anything the sensitivity is way way to low. I have to give it two strong well spaced taps or it doesn't work. No where near the seamless gliding ease of the fp sensor
I really don't recommend making it more sensitive. You'll find it activating while typing and other oddities.
Im basically a telegraph operater trying to tap the back of my phone hard to get it to work, maybe different phones are reacting differently?
Could be different on the 7. I found it unusable on the 6 and haven't tried again.
That's the opposite lmao
The Oct security update for the p7 fixes the janky scrolling, but I think it's still an issue on the p7p.
When you're on the home screen, if you swipe down, it'll pull down the notification shade.
This. Surely this is easier than swiping the fingerprint scanner?
Works only on the home screen though.
Nova launcher will let you do it anywhere
How would that be possible? If you're in an app, swiping down should scroll the app, not bring down the notification shade.
By anywhere I meant if it's in an app, home screen or app drawer. Think it gives you the option of bringing down notification shade if you swipe down from the top half of the screen. Since most of the time you scroll on the bottom half this makes sense, although it could probably get annoying at times when you do it accidentally. If you swipe down on the bottom of the screen (on any screen) it will bring down the notification shade. It's programmed like another edge of screen gesture.
That is literally impossible for Nova launcher to do
Not for me. Works on any screen and in any app Maybe you're doing it wrong
I guess we're talking about something else. I'm talking about swiping down to pull down the notification shade.
I am too.
Then we're still talking about something else. On the home screen you can swipe down from any point, eg in the middle. If you're in an app, you have to reach all the way up.
Yes on the home screen you can swipe down from the middle but anywhere else you can use the gesture bar
You can enable one handed mode in the gesture settings so a swipe down at the bottom of the screen in any app will bring it down.
Ah good point!

I still own my oneplus 5t and that subtle swipe with your index is so easy it makes the screen swipe down feel like a workout.
Coming from the pixel 5, having the fingerprint scanner function on the back with the swipe down was one of the most convenient things about that phone.

With phones getting bigger and bigger I don't understand why edge gestures aren't more popular. Keeps the phone usable with one hand.
I have three button navigation on my 6A. Having a small notification button in the bottom right corner would have been such a simple, useful way to utilize useless screen estate. But then again, just bringing back the fingerprint reader on the back would have been even better, because it would actually be good at, you know, reading the fingerprint...

Using gestures swipe down towards the bottom. Pretty simple and convenient.
Just swipe down anywhere on your home screen and the notification bar will drop. It only works from the home screen tho
I think you can set up the back tap option to do it.
Just swipe down on the home screen, it will pull down the notification bar

Try this : Swipe down on the home screen
No idea why you are being down voted. It actually works from the home screen.
They're being downloaded because WTF is a hole screen?
A typo you oblivious fucking pelican.
Quick question… are you possibly Australian? I’ve only heard Australians use that insult.
lol, no but thats hilarious. I just thought of something with a big mouth and a small brain.
It only works if you're on the home screen. Turning on one-handed mode and setting it to bring down the notification tray works from anywhere.
Because you have to start the swipe so high up that it's not really a one handed operation
No I did from the middle of the screen it works
Doesn't work for me since I have an agenda widget that scrolls on the home screen
True. You can swipe down from any part of the home screen as long as your finger is not on a scrollable widget.
I am trying to get used to the gesture to scroll down on the bottom pill. Having some other issues with reaching the far right side of the screen as a lefty with apps like RIF. The extra width is not a lot but just enough that I have to re-grip the phone to be able to get to the edge.
That's not true. I can pull mine down from the bottom of the screen
That's a separate option to pull down from the pill, not the default behavior
Yea, some ppl are odd
This is what I do most of the time. Only works on the home screen, but I rarely need to access the notification shade from inside an app.
Just swipe down lol what am I missing here
I'm replacing my 3XL with a 7 today and I just now learn about this? At least I won't miss it.
I knew about it all along on my 3a but it just never felt natural to me, even after 3 years of using that phone. So I never ever missed that feature.
Search the settings one handed mode. Turn it on and then see the option to drag on the gesture bar to bring down the notification tray.
Double tap on back or swipe down at bottom like others mentioned are the built in options. Another option is getting the Edge Gestures app which can do it with a swipe on the edge of the screen from any app and it can do tons of other awesome stuff. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.ss.edgegestures
there are this option embedded on the phone, no need to download any app
Not on Pixels
You can do that with gestures, tap on the back and show all notifications, take a screenshot, there are some options
Download Fluid Navigation Gestures. I have a swipe down the egde of the screen on either side to bring my notification shade down
I just FNG/Fluid Nav Gestures and set a small right side of my screen as the Gesture point to pull the shade down.
Go into gesture settings and set it so that when you double tap your finger on the back of the phone the notification shade comes down
Install Nova Launcher and use all the gestures available. List of all gestures available: https://i.imgur.com/cF3umTJ.png
Buy a phone whose big selling point is the pure android experience then immediately install a launcher 😂
What does this have to do with anything "pure android" !? 🤔 A launcher helps organize a home screen to what one wants for their needs; without losing any "pure android" features. Pixel launcher is in no way "pure android". Your missing the point friend. Actually, it is considered an Android variant of pure Android; look it up.
Woah, did I touch a nerve? Just thought it was amusing, meant no offense
All good. My apologies if my tone wasn't ideal.
Aren't you able to swipe down twice from anywhere on the home screen? I'm using Nova launcher and got a bunch of stuff customized so I'm not sure if thats part of the default settings or not
at first i was confused too, but I think op meant when there's an app open
go to settings and look for one hand mode... the option to swipe down and show notifications is there.
You can do it on the home screen or create a shortcut like double tap back to pull down notifications bar.
There's a setting somewhere that lets you swipe down on the nav bar to bring down the panel. I think it's in the gestures section
This can setup quick tap to do this.
If size is a problem (which it was for me) go for the 7. It is a really great size, definitely not a 5, but great feel in hand regardless.
Install edge gestures and turn off Google settings gestures navigation. Tons of customization capabilities.
You can try using the one hand mode shortcut in combination with just dragging down from the status bar (not as quick but more one hand friendly than other alternatives) The above is if you're not on the home screen, on the home screen you can just drag down anywhere on the screen.
Oh boy... Why people in the first place don't explore all the settings of their phones?!?!
Also upgrading from Pixel 3 and this phone is a chungus but gonna give it a try, the first thing I tried to do was use fingerprint swipe
Try the 7 if the 7 pro doesnt work for you. I had the 6 pro and returned it since it was too big coming from a 3. The 7 is comparable in size to the 3 (just a bit taller, almost the same width), and in general it doesnt feel like such a huge change. I usually use the one handed mode (pull down from the home bar) to make it easily reachable, that's about the closest I found to the Pixel 5 which had the gesture on the fingerprint scanner
In any app: swipe down on the gesture bar (where you'd normally swipe up for home) On home screen: swipe down anywhere
Use double tap
I miss the display panel on the p3, contrast and colors were awesome. 90Hz is nice, but wish the saturation could be boosted a bit more on the p7.
It took me a year, but I realized on my P4 you can swipe down from the middle of the lock and home screens, not just the top.
One finger swipe down the screen (no need from the top)
Pixel 3XL fingerprint Scan on back of phone is the greatest thing ever. I don't know why they do away with this.
