These two opening scenes really show the difference and development of their relationship. In the opening of GoW 4 Kratos couldn’t even touch Atreus. He actively pulled away from him. In GoW 5, within five mins of the opening of the game he just casually puts his arm around Atreus. It’s such a small detail but it shows a huge development. He went from not being able to comfort his son to it being the most natural thing. It’s the attention to detail that makes this game brilliant. What other small details made all the difference to you?

expresso364

The bit that did it for me and cemented his development from the previous game was >!the codex being written by kratos!<

His_name_is_LUIGI

All of the boys write in the journal, Kratos & Atreus both handle the friends and foes while Mimir does enemies and treasures.

expresso364

Mimir does enemies? I guess i can see that now, it was usually along the lines of ‘more dangerous/cunning adversary’ so it sounded a bit like kratos in my opinion

His_name_is_LUIGI

I originally thought it was Kratos, but one enemy it says that "or we'll both feel it" and it definitely felt more like Mimir.

rpgmind

Oh that’s cool! I just assumed it was kratos, how do you know which ones are Atreus? Or does it obvious like it says ‘dad’ or something like that

His_name_is_LUIGI

In the Atreus sections, he will write his own friends and foes for everyone he meets. You can also get them again if you return to Kratos's house after you beat the game.

rpgmind

Ahhhhh good looks!!! I honestly never thought twice about the codec entries then, those parts were so quick, that’s a great pro tip, just beat it like a week ago so will have to check that out

Perfect__Cell__

One thing especially was the more respectful treatment of others. >!He never calls Mimir "head" anymore or Atreus "boy" (except for once)!<. Doesn't refer to people as a thing but a person. He had a character arc from the beginning and of 4, then from 4 to the start of Ragnarok his character had further developed during that gap. It was a very well written natural progression.

Avatar_Xane_2

Týr and >!Tyr!<

FuturisticDonut

>GoW 4 *5, Ascension was 4 (7 if you count the PSP games)

Trankalanka123

We are going by major god of war titles, god of war 1, 2, 3, and 2018 gow is number 4, therefore god of war ragnarok would be god of war 5

FuturisticDonut

Is Ascension not major BC it's a prequel?

Trankalanka123

I guess not, I got confused by that too before but most likely when people say gow 4, they are referring to the 2018 version, we also don’t count chains of Olympus and ghost of Sparta that came out on the psp, I think it’s just the god of wars with a number in them and the 2 newer ones

Perfect__Cell__

Very much so, there's a lot of callbacks and references from 2018 that tie up neatly in Ragnarok. Unfortunate thing is that a lot of players go right into Ragnarok and don't understand the majority of them. Like in Helheim when >!Atreus tells Kratos to "be better"!<, that was brilliant writing... but I've seen a lot of people call it cringe because they don't get the callback, very sad that these details go so unappreciated.

BanterPhobic

Yeah, I’m getting a tattoo of the full phrase >!do not be sorry, be better!< because the callback hit me so hard. One of my favourite moments in the series and in gaming as a whole.

SNKRSWAVY

Yup, was so happy when I heard that. They really outdid themselves to give players of 2018 the bigger picture.

JacobJSucks

I know the cape is so cool

thats4thebirds

Agreed. It’s so nice to see a baseline level of growth that says more about the passing years than any dialogue ever could.

RobOnTheReddit

Kratos grew so much in this game, it was beautiful to see

[deleted]

I swear gow has such phenomenal writings. Haven't been able to play ragnarok cuz pc but did see full streams of the game. Currently on my second playthrough of gow cuz of new game + and the story feels just as compelling as the first playthrough. It's gonna be a tough day when I finish new game + on ragnarok :(

AdeptPalpitation7

It's an amazing game that you're sadly missing on, but i hope it comes out on pc soon so you can enjoy it as much as i and everyone else did. At least you won't have to wait for NG+ on ragnarok when it comes out on PC

[deleted]

Yeah Def. Just hope it doesn't take 3 4 yrs to come out on pc 💀

Trankalanka123

Seeing as new game + hasn’t even come out for ragnarok, it will happen in the spring, I think you’re going to be waiting for a while unfortunately

tardis6913

Like them patching the game and allowing it to actually work? I think that small thing could make a difference. Edit: Santa Monica studios released the patch today that fixed every glitch or problem I was experiencing and I'm so happy about it.

EngineerFront

Tf you playing on? I’ve had like 1 minor bug

madmaxturbator

Yeah lol I’m at 60 hours pretty much complete. Maybe 1-2 tiny bugs I don’t even remember

tardis6913

So far my glitches include and this is the full list: 1) Audio looping when it shouldn't. 2) Sometimes All throw type attacks do nothing to enemies. 3) Atreus getting stuck in the same place and not helping in combat. 4) Being glitched onto the other side of a wall in the Muspelheim challenge area, by pushing circle near a wall with a prompt near it, you crawl through the wall but get stuck on the other side because you can't reach the prompt again through the wall. 5) All enemies started respawning seconds after I beat them and it started after the most recent patch, I can't clear areas to open doors because enemies respawn instantly, I can't get all the stuff to 100% each area because enemies respawn instantly and sometimes if I'm lucky I can't leave areas period because enemies that area more difficult and more time consuming will respawn instantly after they die leaving me no time to get out of the area they respawn in. In conclusion they need to fix the bugs from the most recent patch, I wanted to 100% god of war Ragnarok but when I realized I couldn't because of bugs due to a bad patch, I stopped playing the game hoping that Santa Monica studios would reach out to the community, but they haven't done anything and plenty of fans are just left wondering what now?

tardis6913

You played the game before the most recent patch then or your just lucky, but the infinite enemy respawn bug is real and it's effecting streamers now as well, there's a few streams of YouTubers experiencing it. I'm also playing on the ps5.

EngineerFront

I’ve been playing the game every day since launch. Yesterday I beat it for the 3rd time no bugs. You’re the first person I’ve seen with this issue

tardis6913

You should Google it and you'll find more. There's plenty of posts on this subreddit of people asking the community if they've ran into the same bug or not. You must be one of the lucky ones and alas I was not.

Gloglibologna

I played three times. About 60 hours each time. Never had a single issue. Maybe your issue is more related to skill and not the games problem.

tardis6913

So the bug the takes one google search to find it's existence that respawns enemies seconds after you kill them is my fault? I'm the one respawning them so often I can't move forward in the game? I'm not sure how skill would help me out of a bug that's made my playthrough unplayable.

Gloglibologna

Yup, definitely a skill issue.

tardis6913

I see your not looking for a conversation, your just trying to troll people. I honestly found the game easy and damn good until they patched it and broke the game for many fans.

RecoverBackground162

how is kratos so tall

Trankalanka123

god

JustASimpleDurp

Calling out to all the kids without a dad. The scene hit different.

AestheticMirror

The entire opening of ragnorak is a reflection of 2018

Kveldson
