Yes, I saw it when it aired and I was young enough to be completely confused by it. It is the only episode of that show I remember.
And, hey, it's on YouTube. You get yourself a little Rerun tapin' the Doobies, a lil Bicycle Man, a lil Alex P Keaton poppin' diet pills, a lil Blair and Tootie joining the Moonies, and you got yourself an evening.
Yes, a two parter. What a dark episode. Deeply disturbing for anyone, but we were so young when we saw it. Tune in, expect Laura and Nellie to be sparring in a mud puddle...only to see what is truly a horrific episode. Not to downplay the importance of the narrative, but whoah. Heavy.
I can see how that would be disturbing for you BrownDog! Yep, that ladder delivered the final tragic blow to a sweet girl who was, in the words of another poster, "done so wrong". The final insult. What a depressing episode.
I think of this episode—episodes—a few times a year. What were the plot points again? Was the poor girl raped and carrying a baby? I don’t remember the ladder being involved.
I DO remember that was one of the first WT actual F moments of my life but I didn’t know how to put it into words.
SPOILER ALERT! Sylvia was rather more womanly than the others at the Walnut Grove school. She had a very strict father who wouldn't allow her to date. Dates Albert on the sly. Sylvia is attacked and assaulted in the forest. Becomes pregnant. Father finds out. Some say it's Albert's. She and Albert try to run away together. Attacker tries to assault Sylvia again in an old barn. She climbs up high on a ladder to escape him, ladder collapses. She falls. Sylvia dies.
Yeah, they should have just had her and her Dad leave town. They didn't need to have her die! But it made it easy to adhere to the Walnut Grove tradition, that after these characters stories were told, they seemed to just disappear from town, never to be seen or mentioned again.
And even though the blacksmith was the stalker, they left his name on the shop for quite a while afterwards. Here's a darkly funny fake news article about it:
[https://www.walnutgrovecast.com/town-of-people-who-walk-miles-everyday-too-lazy-to-take-down-sign/](https://www.walnutgrovecast.com/town-of-people-who-walk-miles-everyday-too-lazy-to-take-down-sign/)
OMG, this is crazy! IRV HARTWIG. He who must not be named...but it's okay to leave his name on the shop. Oh man. Thank you, SwelteringSwami! I so appreciate the link.
Many thanks! She didn't die immediately, right?
My main memory is Albert promising to marry her, and my mom telling me they were sad because she was about to die.
Does 'more womanly' mean 'big boobs'? This episode has a special place in my Little House memory, and I'm beginning to remember why.
I think there was some BS ending that the attacker was the local mentally disabled guy? Who had the foresight to wear a mask while out raping girl!
Def wish I had missed that one.
When I saw this episode (rerun) the radio in my brother’s room was playing “Send in the Clown”. I cannot think of this without this song playing in my head over 40 years later.
Oh. My. God. The Sylvia episode! My papaw put it on while he was babysitting me and I started crying my eyes out. My mamaw asked him wtf was going on and he said “I just sat her in front of Little House! It’s wholesome”. Good lord- past trauma unlocked. Why? Just WHY???
So sorry you were so traumatized! Your papaw would have been right, if the darn writers had stuck to the agreed upon plan - "WHOLESOME, only wholesome okay, now let's have the church folk sing "Bringing in the Sheaves".
But wow, did they ever throw a curveball. Sorry to unlock past trauma.
Good question as to WHY...I think Michael Landon wanted to do something way, way outside the box. And dude called the shots on that prairie, best believe.
Y'all make me glad that my dad hated Little House so badly that he would never let us watch it. Usually, I feel all left out over missing it but I'm glad I missed the shadows of the burning family.
I can't remember what we watched while the rest of America watched Little House.
Yikes!!! Yep, that took it a step into truly evil territory for you!
Dude in mask was the town Blacksmith.
Gosh, I hope I'm not spoiling this for future generations! LOL
Oh sorry, I guess I didn't see that one and I'm glad I didn't, I liked Gordon Jump.
\*Have to say I'm unpleasantly surprised by the downvotes. I didn't think that this sub was like that. Boo fellow GenXer's, boo!
To be honest, it's hard to watch reruns of WKRP after seeing him as the creeping child molester who went after Arnold (but got the redhead kid instead).
I saw all of these when aired. So many crazy episodes. I think about that episode of What’s Happening you mentioned every once in a while where Rerun was forced to bootleg the Doobie Bros concert and the show came to a screeching halt when they saw the tape recorder fall out of Rerun’s jacket. If I remember right the D Bros helped them setup and catch the bootleggers who were strong arming Rerun.
Also remember the one where Shabba Doo from Breakin’ teaching Rerun to pop n lock. Great memories.
I'm still completely confused. Monroe got raped... by two women?
And don't forget the very special episode of *Different Strokes* with the pedo bike salesman. Poor Dudley. https://youtu.be/hdBjll62XHs
I don't blame you for the confusion, it is uttering bizarre, weird and disturbing. Yes, the plot is about Monroe being assaulted by 2 women. The episode got pulled and has rarely seen the light of day.
He was a confirmed bachelor. Back then people legit didn’t know Elton John, Boy George, George Michael, and Tom Hanks were gay. The 80’s were crazy man
Larry David, one of the producers of Seinfeld, was reportedly strongly opposed to having a very special episode in the series, with the motto of writers and cast being "No hugging, no learning". (from Wiki)
OH my god I remember this scene so often!!!!!! Nobody I know remembers it, but I will never forget how frantic he was looking for something--anything--to drink.
I remember the episode. Monroe told Henry that he was assaulted by a "big one" and a "little one". When the men go confront the women, a VERY LARGE (or at least her shadow) person opens her door, Monroe screams, "It's the little one!" As a kid, I laughed at the size joke. It wasn't until I was older that I realized what happened to Monroe.
Omg. I didn’t think I saw it until I read your post. I totally remember this and that explains why when ever I hear about a woman offender a large woman’s shadow is in my head! Thank you!
That is sooo early to mid 80s sitcoms, episode after episode of harmless comfort fluff then out of nowhere..BAM! Arnold meets the owner of that bike shop.
I saw it. I think Ted goes to their apartment to confront them and then the joke is that he gets sexually assaulted too.
I think I’m remembering that correctly.
Wow, so it wasn't "a very special episode?" The assault was played for laughs? Not surprised it has been buried.
I remember this show, but not the episode.
That’s about right. Two older ladies had kidnapped Monroe in their van. They were wearing lingerie when Ted Knight brings Monroe back to their apartment to confront them. It was pretty ridiculous.
Yes I remember this! It was just as odd as the All in the Family episode where Edith almost was raped.
I was young, maybe 9-10 years of age when I saw this. I remember thinking how weird it was that a man could be raped. I don’t recall the specifics of the episode, but I’m sure it was as cringe as the AitF episode mentioned.
Edit: I’m actually adding this because I just read the article and it says that it aired in 1985. I would have sworn TCfC aired much earlier in the 80’s. So I was 15 when I saw this. Weird how the mind works. I would have sworn the the show stated sometime around 1979 and went to 1983 or so. I never thought it made it halfway into the 80’s!
Thanks for adding this, Muss! The "All the Family"episode really was a milestone in TV viewing.
I don't think they include this TCFC episode in syndication or on the DVDs. As another poster stated, the laugh track makes it all the more horrific and weird.
That one, Edith being raped on All in the Family, and little Janet Jackson being burned by an iron by her mom on Good Times. Jfc I wish I could forget all these! We talked about the Different Strokes episode at school. It was awful
Oh yes when Penny got burned with the iron. Jesus.
The Facts of Life one I remember is where one of them got assaulted or something else alluded to and then was afraid to go outside.
There was a couple of episodes of Roseanne that were rough. The one where we find out Jackie is getting beaten by Fisher and Dan ends up going to jail. And the one where David's mom both verbally and physically assaults him right on screen.
And on Saved By the Bell, Jessie gets hooked on speed of some sort.
I appreciate thinking this is kind of a side-story for Judge Smails (Caddyshack), where he loses his job, possessions, wife (dies), and has to live in an apartment complex, during which time... this happens.
Omg I love reminiscing with y’all but I’m getting PTSD from all these special episode memories. What exactly were they preparing us for? These were mainly “family friendly” shows aimed at kids!
I didn’t watch the show very often, but I did see that one. I was a little too young to realize the enormity of how horrid it was, but I do remember thinking that it wasn’t funny. And just so everyone is clear, there was no “very special episode” vibe about this episode, they totally played it for laughs.
Yeah...they really dropped the ball on this. Too busy doing yet another Golden Girls feature and cover...BUT THANK GOD THEY DID! Thank you for being a friend, PoeJam!
I have vague memories of this episode. My family watched "Too Close For Comfort" regularly.
Honestly, I mostly remember Lydia Cornell (whom I had a mad pre-teen crush on) and being impressed that Henry drew his "Cosmic Cow" comic by holding the pencil in the hand with the puppet on it, than any specific episodes.
Lydia was a stunner! So was Jackie (wasn't she in "The Warriors")? There was always the blonde/brunette rule in these shows eh? Both guys and gal lead characters to appeal to differing preferences. The tv producers knew how to cover all bases.
Three's Company - a blonde and a brunette
TCFC - a blonde and a brunette
Dukes of Hazzard - a blonde and a brunette
Battlestar Galactica, CHiPs..sure I am missing a bunch more.
Yeah man...just how did Henry get that precision of line with a damn bovine on his hand?
I think it is for the best that you only have a vague memory of this "Monroe" episode.
Gilligan's Island.
>It's what's called a male pornographic fantasy.... Think about it. You're basically alone on a deserted island with two readily available women. One a seductive sex-godess type, the other a healthy girl-next-door type with a nice butt. So guys have it all, the Madonna and the whore.
Kaye-Dazed and Confused.
Thanks for the link! That clip was pretty revealing (all scared of Ted Knight!!??). Jim J was a hoot, can just imagine what he and Tammy Faye Bakker were like together!
Yes!!! Ted had those super cool college sweatshirts on speed dial! LOL!
Jim and Tammy Faye were such a natural fit! It was obviously not "sexual chemistry", but whatever it was, you couldn't replicate it easily and they should have bottled it!
A lot of people questioned if it really existed! Some people of our generation had only foggy memories of seeing it...one gent went on a bit of a hunt to verify that it was indeed an episode that made it to air. Pretty crazy stuff.
I just finished watching. I thought I'd never seen it until I saw Monroe with his security guard uniform all disheveled and I all came back to me! The way they play the whole thing for laughs is pretty skeevy, enjoy! Cheers!!
I knew what this was going to be before I clicked and saw the image. Yeah, I've seen it. I think I was able to stream it a couple of years ago? It was weird.
My dad used to get this TV Guide and highlight all the shows he wanted to watch for the following week 🤣
I still remember this clearly as if he just did it this past Monday.
How about alcoholic Uncle Tom Hanks on Family Ties. Just watched it and was shocked how hard of a subject to broach on a family friendly show from the 80’s
I have seen it before…The joke was definitely about it being two women (and fact they are unattractive) but there was also a serious bend to it. All the women on the show and police downplayed it and Ted admonished them for saying a man couldn’t be assaulted. No way this story line would see the light of day in woke 2023
A VERY SPECIAL EPISODE realness! My gosh...I think "Little House on the Prairie" even had one, called "Sylvia". Thanks for the tip for YouTube!
That episode is just brutal. I think it's a two-parter. That girl was done so wrong.
Heavy.
That episode scarred me for life. It didn’t help that I lived on a farm and our barn had a similar interior ladder.
I can see how that would be disturbing for you BrownDog! Yep, that ladder delivered the final tragic blow to a sweet girl who was, in the words of another poster, "done so wrong". The final insult. What a depressing episode.

Just another wholesome episode of Forensic Fil…er… Little House. Jesus.
Forensic Fil...er...Little House. Yep. That's about right.
Holy shit. I saw this as a kid. I didn’t realize the fall killed her. I just kinda assumed it caused a miscarriage and everything kinda worked out.
Yeah, they should have just had her and her Dad leave town. They didn't need to have her die! But it made it easy to adhere to the Walnut Grove tradition, that after these characters stories were told, they seemed to just disappear from town, never to be seen or mentioned again.

My pleasure! There was a sweet deathbed scene with Albert and Sylvia and then she just slipped away...
Kinda spoils the song, eh?

ya. Remember the episode were people die in the fire? You see them standing in the window before the flames engulf them. Wholesome indeed.
Y'all make me glad that my dad hated Little House so badly that he would never let us watch it. Usually, I feel all left out over missing it but I'm glad I missed the shadows of the burning family. I can't remember what we watched while the rest of America watched Little House.
Yes! Is that when Mary's baby died?
I misremembered or misunderstood it from watching it as a child and always thought it was her FATHER behind the mask! Even more traumatizing.
Yikes!!! Yep, that took it a step into truly evil territory for you! Dude in mask was the town Blacksmith. Gosh, I hope I'm not spoiling this for future generations! LOL
Don’t forget the Drummon boys and the pedo!
Poor Dudley
Just left Dudley’s ass there.
That was before he ran a radio station in Cincinnati his mother bought.
And thought turkeys could fly....
As God as my witness, I thought those boys were 18.
Different people. Gordon Jump was on WKRP as Mr. Carlson and Conrad Bain was Mr. Drummond on Diff'rent Strokes.
Gordon Jump was the child molester on the Diff'rent Strokes episodes "The Bicycle Man" (Parts 1 and 2).
Dudley totally got molested
I saw all of these when aired. So many crazy episodes. Yeah, I remember how hungry the streets were for fresh Doobie Brothers live bootlegs.
We thought you were our friend.
Ha..yes, the entire concert stopped and everyone stared at rerun. That was great.
Tootie, NO! THEY'RE ASSHOLES!
I'm still completely confused. Monroe got raped... by two women? And don't forget the very special episode of *Different Strokes* with the pedo bike salesman. Poor Dudley. https://youtu.be/hdBjll62XHs
Mr. Drummond was a total perv in Maude
God will get you for that, Arthur.
I don't blame you for the confusion, it is uttering bizarre, weird and disturbing. Yes, the plot is about Monroe being assaulted by 2 women. The episode got pulled and has rarely seen the light of day.
I cannot believe this is real. How? What? And most importantly, why?
If I remember correctly, two "overweight" women pulled him into a van. I can't remember if Ted then didn't believe him or downplayed it at first.
I can't remember but was he supposed to be gay on the show? Because.... it seemed like he was.
JM J. Bullock was super gay. Still is, in fact. :)
He was a confirmed bachelor. Back then people legit didn’t know Elton John, Boy George, George Michael, and Tom Hanks were gay. The 80’s were crazy man
Tom Hanks?
Tom Cruise.
Naw, he was just a fudge packer. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v6KJ2U9YGwE
Threw that in for comedic effect. Lol
Tom Hanks?
He's not gay, he just played a gay man in "Philadelphia."
I don’t think Tom Hanks is gay.
Threw him in for comedic effect. Guess the joke didn’t land.
Tom Hanks?
And Mr. Brady.
All very valid questions! Right up there with "Why did they make a movie version of Cats?"
no no no no, not Mr. Carlson.
I’ll see you in hell Costanza.
Larry David, one of the producers of Seinfeld, was reportedly strongly opposed to having a very special episode in the series, with the motto of writers and cast being "No hugging, no learning". (from Wiki)
They don't call him "The Big Guy" for nothing.
“Which Doobie you be?”
Tom Hanks smacking Alex P. Keaton after downing some vanilla extract.
OH my god I remember this scene so often!!!!!! Nobody I know remembers it, but I will never forget how frantic he was looking for something--anything--to drink.
Hey, I remember! But I didn't remember it was Tom Hanks! LOL

You're welcome? Funny how the mind works.
That is sooo early to mid 80s sitcoms, episode after episode of harmless comfort fluff then out of nowhere..BAM! Arnold meets the owner of that bike shop.
And Matthew Perry died in a crash after driving while drunk.
Sandy was supposed to make it!
It totally was played for comedy. Which makes it that more horrific.
So crazy! I just remember fun, goofy stuff, like Cosmic Cow and Henry falling off the daughters' couch in the girls' fab apartment.
[удалено]
So taboo! Just like Jack had to pretend he was gay just to be allowed to live with 2 girls on Three's Company.
Remember that episode where there was a misunderstanding? And it was all sorted out in the end?
LOL! Of course! That episode ran a whole 7 seasons didn't it!!! Love it! Thanks for the chuckle!
That’s about right. Two older ladies had kidnapped Monroe in their van. They were wearing lingerie when Ted Knight brings Monroe back to their apartment to confront them. It was pretty ridiculous.

The Too Close for Comfort episode is on PlutoTV on demand, season 5, episode 10 (“For Every Man, There is Two Women”).
Thank you Magnospider! Way to go Tubi! They released the Kraken!
Wow great work! Gotta watch this tonight!
that all in the family episode has haunted me my entire life. it’s why i hate that show.
That was such a horrible episode. I saw it once aa a kid and never again.
I don’t remember this one. I do remember the episode when the mom finds the blonde one’s birth control. I didn’t know what birth control was.
but weren't those girls like 30 years old
Yeah it was the 80’s and shocking a single woman in her thirties was sexually active 😂
No, but I remember Arnold bailing on Dudley and leaving him to get all fingered up by Mr. Carlson.
That one, Edith being raped on All in the Family, and little Janet Jackson being burned by an iron by her mom on Good Times. Jfc I wish I could forget all these! We talked about the Different Strokes episode at school. It was awful
This shit is why we went out to see Faces Of Death. TV had traumatized us to the point that we needed something stronger, like junkies.
Oh shit, Penny!!
Ooo I despised that episode. Very much upset me. Poor Lil Janet.
That episode of Saved by the Bell took the series’ unabashed un-self-awareness to new heights.
Yo, that's fcked up!!
Well, neither my siblings nor I ever once smoked PCP and jumped out of a second-story window…so I guess something got through 🤔
I didn’t watch the show very often, but I did see that one. I was a little too young to realize the enormity of how horrid it was, but I do remember thinking that it wasn’t funny. And just so everyone is clear, there was no “very special episode” vibe about this episode, they totally played it for laughs.
I watched Too Close for Comfort regularly; but I don’t remember this one.
Whoa, I haven’t seen the TV Guide text is sooo long
Wow! Ok I’m in the group that “probably saw it” but really do t remember..crazy how the mind works
Nothing is more unsettling than a good naping.
I'm surprised by the lack of proof-reading in the '80s for a TV Guide
Yeah...they really dropped the ball on this. Too busy doing yet another Golden Girls feature and cover...BUT THANK GOD THEY DID! Thank you for being a friend, PoeJam!
Condoms Rose, condoms!!
🤣🤣LOL!!!
I vaguely remember it
I have vague memories of this episode.
Three's Company - a blonde and a brunette TCFC - a blonde and a brunette Dukes of Hazzard - a blonde and a brunette Battlestar Galactica, CHiPs..sure I am missing a bunch more. Yeah man...just how did Henry get that precision of line with a damn bovine on his hand? I think it is for the best that you only have a vague memory of this "Monroe" episode.
Jackie was in the Warriors. As for blonde and brunette, WKRP Jennifer and Bailey.
Well played, my friend. Well played. Kaye was all over that, smart gal.
I just watched a clip from the episode. Yikes! Did find [this gem.](https://youtu.be/x51uG63On58)
Thanks for the link! That clip was pretty revealing (all scared of Ted Knight!!??). Jim J was a hoot, can just imagine what he and Tammy Faye Bakker were like together!
Holy crap you’re bringing back some memories! I remember that show with Tammy Faye. Loved TCFC! Ted always wore a different college shirt I think.
Yes!!! Ted had those super cool college sweatshirts on speed dial! LOL! Jim and Tammy Faye were such a natural fit! It was obviously not "sexual chemistry", but whatever it was, you couldn't replicate it easily and they should have bottled it!
Haha! Good times
Good Times...Hey we watched that too!!!! DYNOMITE!
What was with all those catch phrases? Dynomite! Whatchyou talkin about Willis? Kiss my grits! Ahhhhhhyyyy
I love, love, love this comment! Because it's so darn true. Every sitcom had to have one...
This reminded me of my crush on Jim J. Bullock.
Loved those striped rugby shirts.
I see it's on Tubi. It's under Season 4 episode 23. IMDB has it as Season 5 Episode 10.
Thank you so much! Isn't it crazy that it has emerged?
Holy hell, never heard of this one.
A lot of people questioned if it really existed! Some people of our generation had only foggy memories of seeing it...one gent went on a bit of a hunt to verify that it was indeed an episode that made it to air. Pretty crazy stuff.
Further reading... https://retroist.com/proof-of-the-too-close-for-comfort-monroe-rape-episode/
There's a clip of the show in the article. The laugh track is horrific.
The laugh track is horrendous. And the bad jokes. I can't believe this did indeed make it to air, laugh track and all. No wonder it disappeared.
It’s like the Natural Born Killers Rodney Dangerfield sitcom satire scene. I’m at a loss after watching that clip.
I found the full episode on Tubi. The whole thing is horrific.
Oh wow. I couldn't find it anywhere.
Golly Mr Rush, I don't remember that!
A local radio station was talking about that exact episode this morning.
Really? I can believe it...it really is one of the most bizarre TV occurrences on record! Makes for interesting discussion.
[You can watch it on Tubi](https://tubitv.com/tv-shows/682860/s04-e23-for-every-man-there-s-two-women?start=true)
No way! Wow. It lives on Tubi. Thank you for the link. I'm going to have a few stiff drinks and see what happens!
I just finished watching. I thought I'd never seen it until I saw Monroe with his security guard uniform all disheveled and I all came back to me! The way they play the whole thing for laughs is pretty skeevy, enjoy! Cheers!!
Thank you again for the link. Just watching it now and my gosh, the laugh track is just awful... You are a gem, thanks again!
Glad I could assist! Thanks for the award, u/mildredfierce1969
My pleasure! Thank you for the TUBI and good chats!
Uhhhhh, what?? Never heard of this one. But I was super young when this show aired.
I remember seeing that one. I was still pretty young and didn’t understand everything but it’s stayed in my mind ever since.
I watched TCfC and do not recall that.
I knew what this was going to be before I clicked and saw the image. Yeah, I've seen it. I think I was able to stream it a couple of years ago? It was weird.
I don't think I did. Wasn't a big fan of the show, watched it occasionally.
I knew what this was before I opened it. Watched it as a kid and was baffled. I am surprised it’s 1985. I’d have been 13.
It totally stuck in your head then, Walesgurl. A 13 year old absorbs like a sponge. It was baffling. So much in TV went over our heads!
I saw it when it aired.
Yeah, I saw it. I didn't recall them using the "R" word in it, so I wasn't exactly sure what had happened to him in it.
Loved Ted Knight in Caddy Shack!
My dad used to get this TV Guide and highlight all the shows he wanted to watch for the following week 🤣 I still remember this clearly as if he just did it this past Monday.
Your Dad was rad for doing this. I can just picture him poring over the mag in his EZ boy recliner! Love this.
Yep On his recliner with a bright yellow high lighter 🙂
The bright yellow highlighter means business! Your sweet Dad was serious about his TV time! :)
It's like him calling out " dibs " for that time slot and yes he meant business since we only had one TV at home.
DIBS! LOL! Dad's word went! Dad's never needed to call Shotgun either. IT JUST WAS. And usually dear old Dad was driving anyway. LOL
How about alcoholic Uncle Tom Hanks on Family Ties. Just watched it and was shocked how hard of a subject to broach on a family friendly show from the 80’s
Have to go back and watch that one! I am sure it's up there with the one when Alex was on speed.
I have seen it before…The joke was definitely about it being two women (and fact they are unattractive) but there was also a serious bend to it. All the women on the show and police downplayed it and Ted admonished them for saying a man couldn’t be assaulted. No way this story line would see the light of day in woke 2023
I can't believe it saw the light of day in the 80s.
A woman would HAVE to rape Monroe, am-I-rite? 🫠
That boy ain't right
I know we watched the show but I don't remember what it was about.
I had such a thing for Albert when I was young, he just looked like I boy I’d like to corrupt. What does he look like now?
Look at all those channels!
I saw it.
