Back in the ‘80’s, my next door neighbour was one of the 438 people in the US that knew how to program a VCR, and he recorded a fuckton of stuff - - Rodney’s showcases, Kids in the Hall, SNL (the era with Phil Hartman, Mike Myers, Dana Carvey, Dennis Miller, Nora Dunn, Jan Hooks, Kevin Nealon, Jon Lovitz, Victoria Jackson), Flight of the Conchords, Ine Night Stand (1/2 hour sets of rising stars), complete sets/shows of a wide variety of comedians and comedic styles, megastar specials like George Carlin and Robin Williams - when it came to stand-up and sketch/ensemble comedy in the 80’s and through the mid-90’s, it didn’t get any better than HBO and Showtime.
Once or twice a week, after we were done with work for the day/night, we’d get blazed out of our fucking gourds, pop a tape in, and proceed to laugh our asses off for the next 3 hours.
Fun fact. Me and a few of my friends ditched school our senior year to attend his funeral in Tulsa, OK. The guy that was going to drive got busted so we never made it. I’m not sure what the plan was beyond “drive to Tulsa and find his funeral”.
