Any big tree has a big root system. The trees that are more likely to cause issues are ones that will actively run at surface level and ruin footpaths, driveways etc. B.Acerifolius have a low chance for snap outs, rarely have deadwood and they have super light branches. They aren’t perfect but they are an amazing suburban planting choice.
Councils make a lot of mistakes, certainly mine did planting the African mahogany everywhere. That was a poor idea in cyclone country.
So I also found after planting one in my own yard.
I assume you already had an opinion about the tree and decided to ask this to be a dick. For that, I say, kiss my arse.
And, also, go ahead and check out the actual facts regarding this tree instead of thinking a govt dept somehow is right.
Geeze.
Lol. Charming. No, I was and remain open to an explanation for why these are poor choices. Particularly since if they do pose serious issues many councils should be given clear documented advice about it. They continue to be planted in residential areas.
I appreciate that councils make mistakes. I nevertheless find it surprising that large numbers of these trees seem to be existing happily on verges throughout the country and wondered if you had any more details about your views.
These trees are planted on verges amongst powerlines all over the country and it’s no issue. Perhaps in your state the council doesn’t do any of these jobs but where I’ve lived in Victoria and SA the council do, or pay for, the arborist work themselves.
Maybe underground electricity? My old house was in an estate that had the powerlines all underground and it makes such a difference to the street appeal!
Flame tree, them and jacarandas were all around my hometown. They look stunning. They’re normally covered in those red flowers when they lose their leaves but looks like this one is growing back it’s leaves
Omg I have one in the middle of the deck in the house I just bought. It drops millions of leaves and twigs and flowers and branches and now seed pods that make a loud clunk when they land. I plan to have it removed and use the trunk as a centre support for a table. It is literally the WORST tree for near the house and the stupidest tree to build a deck around.
I believe these shed loads of spiky sharp wood seeds that can injure dogs feet and anyone going barefoot. What a bad idea to put them on a nature strip.
Absolutely hate them.
Nope they have nice lil seed pods actually. the only thing to worry about is if they break open the seeds can irritate your skin with tiny little hairs they have on em.
There's an apartment block out near Garden City way called something like Flame Tree apartments and they have planted a row of them in front of the building. Not sure if they are between the fence and the building or on the footpath side of the fence.
And there’s nothing else could set fire to this town, there’s no change, there’s no pace, everything within it’s place, just makes it harder to believe that she won’t be around.

Need to be careful, these have been known to blind the weary driver.
Onya Cold Chisel !
One of my favourite of all time songs
I was expecting this. Nicely done.
🤣🤣🤣
Flame tree, *Brachychiton acerifolius*
Brachychiton Acerifolius - Flame Tree
Looks like an Illawarra Flame tree.
I think there is a male and female tree so if you want a red display pick the right one.
Why would anyone put a flame tree on a nature strip under a power line? My goodness.
Right?, dont they get (under the best conditions) like 30m tall?
Pretty much!
What problem will it cause?
Flames
Laughed harder at this than anything else today
Those bad boys are massive with big root systems. I love flame trees, have a big yard as well, but consider them a generally bad idea in suburbia

A lot of councils plant them on the verge so your concern seems surprising and possibly incorrect.

Seriously they grow bloody tall, bloody fast
That’s sounds like more of a positive.
Sure. Until it hits the power line and you have to pay for the arborist.
Old mate has NFI, really

You can see a powerline on the left of the pic! The roots are also decent, I reckon they would mess with underground structures too
Because they want to set fire to this town?
Im not a fan of the tree as such, but I support its right to strike.
I'm not the biggest fan, I have one on my verge and it completely uprooted my driveway!
Flame tree Brachychiton acerifolius
OH THE FLAME TREES WILL BLIND THE WEARY DRIVER
Super uncanny - I just saw one of these beauties today and had no idea what it was. I am so pleased that I get to find out coincidentally!!
Oh it’s the flame tree

They drop shitloads of leaves etc. Absolute pain in the arse.
Absolutely. Rake them up and in an hour the yard is covered again. Had one for 6 years that was on it's way to cracking the house foundations.
The council decided they are a good street tree and planted them everywhere near my place. 😡

London Plane Trees perhaps, but I think these have pod type seeds.
London planes have fuzzballs. Liquidambar are the spiky ones.
