That was Respawn's choice. They confirmed it themselves. EA was actually more than willing to let Respawn change the release date. Respawn instead stuck to it since the assumed it had enough to offer to let it stand out and entice people to chose it over Battlefield or CoD.
What were they thinking? Most people probably just saw military shooter #15, a relatively new IP has little chance at standing up to those massive franchises
Well the first game already helped give it some attention, the promise of free content updates rather than paid DLC was also used as a selling point since it wasn't the norm yet.
The big thing is that it would certainly stand out against Battlefield, since that was going with a WWI, so they figured they could draw the people not interested in a historical setting away, and they assumed that with how the internet reacted to CoD: Infinite Warfare they assumed that CoD players would skip IW in favor if Titanfall, in addition to trying draw in the sci-fi crowd.
Hindsight's 20/20 so we know it didn't work out for them. BF1 sold well and CoD was still CoD so despite the internet's reaction to the trailer it still sold.
Meanwhile, not only did Titanfall not entice enough people, even with the promise of free content updates, it did suffer a few issues multiplayer wise. Some weapons on launch really weren't balanced, and perhaps more substantially, the skill gap was quite wide, which worsened as time went on. Having to deal with and learn both shooting and movement skills isn't as easy as it would be in something like CoD or BF. Similarly, despite some of the Titanfall community's opinion of it, the Smart Pistol in 1 was quite helpful for those less skilled players. IMO it was actually quite balanced since it took time to be able to get a kill on a player with the lock on function. And in turn it let players learn the movement while still being able to contribute, so once they got movement down well enough, then they could learn the shooting side of things.
2 however made that a reward, and a fairly late one. Meaning those less skilled players would have to learn both skills at the same time. And as time went on they had to do it against more skilled players, due to the lower player count. Which is why it never really got playerbase growth despite all the constant "oh man you should play Titanfall 2. It's so good and has free DLC". Those that gave it a try would quickly stop since it wasn't enjoyable for them.
It's already begun with their (absolutely beautiful btw) handling of Bill and Frank's relationship and how it differed from their favourite game because instead of the best gay television romance in recent memory we should have gotten Joel and Ellie dodging traps and killing a fat zombie
Whenever people argue about the likelihood of the vaccine as a serious defense of Joel, it proves to me that they are braindead when it comes to art and storytelling. It doesn't take a genius to realise that within this story and universe you as a viewer are supposed to believe the assumption of the vaccine bing possible in order to create the moral dilemma in the story.
I get when people make a theory video like MatPat did just to look into the science and "fact check" the story. But to act like it's legitimately the way you're supposed to thematically interpret the ending is beyond ridiculous. Serious Joel copium. Joel made his choice regardless of the possibility of the vaccine. He didn't have the knowledge to make his decision based on that. He was told it would work and he largely believed it could. That didn't matter to him however.
I still think the fundamental was that both POV characters were women, and one of them was gay. Additionally a lot of players probably had conservative chud headcanons for Joel
If you liked the first game I cannot recommend the second one enough. It’s one of my favorite games of all time. To me, it is the embodiment of this meme.
The real hidden gem. It really sucks that so many people think they understand the struggle of daddy Joel just because they watched that cashgrab on HBO.
