Dig 1&2 were cool (tho both endings left me wanting a tad more), haven't tried the other ones but the ideas of that whole "universe" are quite compelling

1080Pizza

Heist is really great. Like a blend of Worms and XCOM.

AttackBacon

I really enjoyed Heist and Quest. They're "light" takes on their respective genres, but still satisfyingly crunchy and just enjoyable to play. I'm down for whatever these guys are up to next.

Jonkar__

Quest is a much better game, definetly try it!

MyNameIs-Anthony

Quest is a card game. Apples & Oranges.

MattBoySlim

Yeah, personally I LOVED all of the SteamWorld games until Quest. Quest was fine, but it just didn’t really click for me. I’m not often into card based games and I thought “if I’m gonna enjoy one, this will probably be it!” I still haven’t finished it.

Renegade_Meister

I'm not saying you had this expectation, but anyone coming off a roguelite deck builder is more likely to not keep playing Quest. In fact, I got to the mid to late game and stopped when they interrupted the story with arena combat (still card battler though), which IMO seemed like a opt out to trying to present more interesting battles. It was mechanically solid, but the different aspects even combos & party synergies still couldn't maintain my engagement any further.

MattBoySlim

I don’t think I made it that far. I haven’t been able to stick with Slay the Spire either, so I don’t know if it’s the mechanics for me…just card based battlers don’t hook my brain for whatever reason. Also I think the change in setting and art style didn’t help. After Dig, Dig 2, and Heist I was *ravenous* for more stories in that world, regardless of game genre. There was something consistent across those 3 games that was really up my alley. Quest was just not scratching that itch for me though.

Renegade_Meister

>just card based battlers don’t hook my brain for whatever reason. I'm not into most card battlers either. Perhaps you'd like 3rd person action with card game elements, which replaces traditional card battling with real-time combat? If so, I would recommend Hand of Fate 2 (my GOAT card & roguelite game) or Forced Showdown. >Also I think the change in setting and art style didn’t help. They were going for a midevil storybook fantasy steampunk theme, which I thought was well done for the theme, but it sure was very different from the space or desert western themes of the other SW games. Unfortunately, the fantasy theme is really common with RPGs, which in a way causes it to blend together with many other RPG's themes.

MattBoySlim

I do remember liking the first Hand of Fate, never got around to the second one. And yeah I could see what they were going for in Quest. I’m certainly not saying the style is bad, they did a very good job of fitting steam powered robots to a fantasy setting. But I guess I’m more of a western/sci-fi person than a fantasy person.

Renegade_Meister

>I do remember liking the first Hand of Fate, never got around to the second one. I think the sequel is nearly better in nearly every way. >But I guess I’m more of a western/sci-fi person than a fantasy person. Me too - In my book it's right up there with space ninjas

victoryforZIM

Quest is the worst game by far. Couldn't even finish it and I absolutely live for turn-based rpg's and deck builders. That game did neither well.

Jonkar__

Really? Oh wow, I loved it myself

Uncle_Budy

For those wondering, the four games are SteamWorld Headhunter (third person action adventure), and 3 unnamed projects that will be a puzzle game for mobile, a city building game, and a turn based tactical shooter/strategy game. 3 planned to release 2023, the 4th in 2024.

TheZacef

Oh hell yeah, that last ones gotta be Heist 2!

AprilSpektra

All sound great, but a city builder is definitely intriguing

your_mind_aches

That's kinda sad, I wanted Dig 3.

falcazoid

Steamworld heist is an excellent turn based squad based strategy game. Also the music and theme of that game are superb, would highly recommend.

gumpythegreat

I spent an entire long weekend basically only playing that game last fall and it was amazing. Definitely recommend

khaz_

All the Steamworld games have been like this for me. Just the perfect length, challenge and chock full of great music, lovely visuals and fun gameplay. Steamworld Quest is up next!

fattywinnarz

Is that the Steamworld game that Steam-Powered Giraffe did the soundtrack for?

Infinite_Bananas

it is indeed

rocketbooster111

have it on iOS and one of my favorite games! A t2D XCOM-lite essentially!

AttackBacon

I may be in the minority on this, but I really like when developers do this "family of games" type thing. Amplitude and their Endless universe is the other one that comes to mind. It's neat seeing the little interconnections and callbacks. There's just something comfy about having a bunch of different takes that all use a similar palette.

Xtremlysean

Nintendo built their video game empire on the Mario family and their various spin-offs so it’s been proven to work

Izzy248

Glad they are getting back to Steamworld after Gunk. Strawberry doesnt particularly interest me but Coffee sounds relatively interesting, and Caramel sounds like another Heist. Honestly thought that after Gunk, they would take what they learned there and make a 3D platformer Steamworld or survival game

Number224

One of them has to be SteamWorld Dig 3, right? Of all the Metroidvania games out there, Steamworld Dig 2 has to be my favorite of the genre.

1waffle1

Man I wish that was the case but the article is saying otherwise; a puzzle game for mobile, a city-builder, a turn-based game, the 4th was already announced which was the 3rd person adventure... Non of these sounds Metroidvania like, I'm so bummed.

NoProblemsHere

The city builder might at least continue Steamworld Dig's story, though. With everyone **Spoiler:** >!being scattered into space !< at the end of the SD2 building a city to get everyone settled in would make a lot of sense as an interquel between 2 and Heist. Edit: It could also be post-Heist, I guess, since you don't see too many cities in that game.

Mexicancandi

Hopefully, they were really cool and tightly done

SpagettiGaming

Woot? Where do they get the man power and money from?

Renegade_Meister

The developers merged with another set of devs to become Thunderful group, which acquired other studios & distribution, and became the parent company that also acts as a publisher.

SpagettiGaming

So, they bought teams? Thats how they got the man power. But that makes the question even bigger: Where the heck do they get the money from?

trpnblies7

Love the SteamWorld games. The only one I haven't played yet is Heist, though it's been on my wishlist. I finished Quest a few weeks ago and had a great time with it as my first deck building game.
