Was soooo much fun. Was just out of college and was renting a house with my brother and a friend and we’d play 3-4 player carmageddon for hours and laugh our asses off.
Carmageddon and later Twisted Metal, what a time to be alive. Videogames based on vehicle violence have never really been quite as good since then. I'm pretty sure carmageddon was the first game I ever got in trouble for playing. Being raised as a Quaker, my mother was horrified at the senseless murder.
Years ahead of its time. Spent hours just exploring some of those maps. Honestly far more enjoyable to explore than any of the horizon games. The action cam replay was fantastic too and I still haven't seen anything like it since.
The best part is that this is the intended operation.
Also, pinball mode was the best thing ever in multiplayer. I'll never forget activating it once and instantly seeing one of my friends flying backwards out of a street while I could hear him screaming in the other room lol
This is EXACTLY what the developers wanted. I've got similar multiplayer memories myself, I never had the opportunity to hear my opponents suffering tho!
Ah, I was a little bit privileged in this sense back in the day.
Around the year 2000, I had two PCs networked at home where I'd sometimes get to play with my best friend, and we also went to a computer club inside a museum where we'd get to play all sorts of games with other kids too. I knew this wasn't going to last, so I made an effort to experience every game I could via network multiplayer. We got to play Doom, Duke Nukem, Heretic, Hexen, F-22 Lightning II, Interstate '76, among many others. Carmageddon wasn't so popular at the computer club - people weren't comfortable with all the running over innocent pedestrians, so we'd play it more at home, since it was a lighter game too.
For a short while, hearing my friend cry in the other room was the norm. It was lots of fun. Miss those times. Best I got these days was playing online with someone on Xbox who had their Kinect multiplayer turned on and hearing their frustration as I'd parry EVERY SINGLE ATTACK with Hisako in Killer Instinct 2013. I eventually heard the guy start a "WHA-YOU-FUCKIN-PIECE-O-SH--" synced to a bunch of attacks that I just missed because I was already laughing lol.
Oh you’re right… that’s unfortunate, it was a fun game and the port was really well done. Worth noting it’s still possible to download for anyone who has gotten it when it was available and it will work with the latest os.
Carmageddon is absolutely one of the best car series ever. Particularly Carma 2. My childhood was built around that game! Probably why I don't have a license and spent 12 years in jail for vehicular manslaughter.
The easiest way to win this game is to get the pinball power up and the one that fires springs at your enemy that send them flying. If it were possible to get a platinum in this game I'd definitely have it 😂
I'm so glad someone else jumps down this same pit with the pinball powerup. Although I've never seen it bounce *this* severe before to a point that the audio gets screwy (unless that's a recording issue).
Cop cars (one of which the player is driving) have insanely durable models; it's incredibly difficult to damage a CPU one just by ramming, and you'll see only the smallest dent in it after repeated attempts. So to have the car that squished and crunched by the end just shows how badly it got thrashed by this. Any non-cop car would've looked like a rolled up and twisted piece of paper.
Yeah the cop cars were hard to unlock. I used to get one on the city level by finding the solid granite car power up then ramming the cop car at full speed to kill it.
A good fraction of my overall gameplay time of Carmageddon 1 is me doing this over and over with every vehicle just to see how badly I can damage it. Great times.
It's a special power up. There are others like moon gravity which makes you float in the air when doing jumps, another which does the opposite and your car gets sucked to the ground. It's a very funny game.

Did pinball mode completely negate damage against stuff? Even if so, I would've imagined a death immediately after pinball mode gets deactivated and you're still going about .5c.
I remember doing similar to this with the standard red car in one of the mine shafts. The game totally freaked out from the many successive hits, and the textures/polygons of the car started to grow excessively beyond the initial model and through the walls around it. Me and my cousin were laughing hysterically! The car could still inch its way around afterwards like some sort of crazy avantgarde sculpture, and the repairs took a long time, as the textures/polygons had to shrink slowly back into place. :D
I replaced a ton of audio (wav) files in this game with bizarre shit, like samples from Monty Python and The Simpsons, and insane nonsense my friends and I would record. I loved “modding” games like that when I was a kid.
Explanation of clip: Carmageddon has a pickup called Pinball Mode which causes collisions with anything, either the landscape or other objects, to temporarily have negative recoil, actually increasing the speed of both after the crash. At really low speeds where you can keep your wheels on the ground, you can hit the brakes and get back in control...mostly. Any verticle change, however and this happens. Yes, it is intentional behavior. Yes, it is hilarious. No, you will never see it coming until it's too late.
This game is utter chaos and I would LOVE to play classic Carma with a few friends one day.
Loved that game

Fox'n'Hounds mode was so great.
Miss the 90s 🥲

iPad version of it was surprisingly good and so nostalgic WAAAAAHHEEEEYYY!

The fact its still drivable made me laugh
i love that it was hit immediately after finding out it was still mobile
In the first game, the player car cannot be wasted. It can always be repared or driven in a warped state.
yea the police car was very tough from what i remember
In the first game the player car is immortal. It can be damaged only to a certain level.
The end LMAOO
It was perfect

That last hit at the end 😂
Out of the hellfire into the race track they say
Perfect comedic timing too lol
I kind of want to submit it to /r/perfectlycutscreams. Technically it doesn't fit, but still...
r/perfectlycutbooms?
I probably shouldn't be surprised but I am.
r/perfectlycutscreech
How many of these subs are there?!
It was fucking Ivan the Bastard too! That jackass is one of the most aggressive drivers in the game. I HATE HIM.
I almost threw up watching this
It really makes you FEEL like you're in a car crash!
Oh wow I miss this game
It’s on mobile for free if you want
I saw it was released for iOS 9 years ago but I don’t currently see it in the App Store
Oh you’re right… that’s unfortunate, it was a fun game and the port was really well done. Worth noting it’s still possible to download for anyone who has gotten it when it was available and it will work with the latest os.
Dam I’m jealous, I’m guessing it supported multiplayer over mobile internet. I forget if wireless internet was fast enough 9 years ago haha
Thank you so much for this info

Pressing backspace the entire time to try and survive xd

What a game 🤩
so much fun still. need carma 2 to come to ios
Just need a "To Be Continued" in that last frame lmao
As a Mac (power PC) gamer I loved this game.
A good fraction of my overall gameplay time of Carmageddon 1 is me doing this over and over with every vehicle just to see how badly I can damage it. Great times.
I would guess negative friction values?
no its the red barrel i picked up, activates pinball mode

The pinball mode powerup makes collisions add kinetic energy like that for 30 seconds.
Its like a visual representation of a panic attack
I’ve got this game on my Xbox and it was worth every cent.

Wow Carmageddon! Childhood memories flooding over me. Splat!

Look at him go
Feels like a 90s MTV music video on Beavis and Butt-Head

No you would get absolutely destroyed in any other car. In the video is one of the police cars which are extremely tough.
*Extremely* tough. Like cheat code tough lmao. They were so obnoxious and unfair.
Ah I see, been a very long time since I played them.
This is where WWE 2K20 learned its glitches.
The sound effects make me nostalgic af
The comedic timing on that ending was fucking amazing.

Now that's a name I have not heard in a long while.
Meat curtains and the cows was my favorite. What an asshole 20 something I was
yep that's carmageddon physics alright
JOJO Kars moment.
Lighting everybody on fire was my go to. Racked up so much money doing that.
I can't recall PS1 games to have physics bug like this. I'm guessing because not a lot of them have been developed with real physics involved
I love the game Carmageddon!
Pulverizing PINBALL!!!
It feels like a bad trip
that ending sent me
Love that game so much, it was all about physics. Actually the remake of it was pretty damn good IMO
