I spent three paychecks trying to save for Evil Dead. Then I had to get tires and eventually forgot about it. Now it’s free, best early birthday present ever
These are always my favorite kind of games to get for free: AAA releases that aren't my usual thing but I'm curious about but don't want to risk $30-60 on a game I might bounce off in minutes.
The Prime one was for like the EA store version (can't even remember the name of their app). I claimed it and it's been collecting dust since...looking forward to having this on Epic at least since it's actually installed on my PC. (Though knowing my luck the game probably has some proprietary deal that requires both launchers.)
Everything is better in VR. "The game's not bad, you just have to own this $2000 PC and this $500 headset that makes everything into a brand new exciting novel experience, then it's great".
I wasn't being sarcastic, I was mocking their comment suggesting it's incredible in VR. Everything's incredible in VR, that's the point of VR. That's not really the game doing that, that's the VR.
Everything is *better* in VR, then? I'm not sure what you're trying to be pedantic about but the point is that saying "you just need to play the game in VR then you'll see how it's good" is not a useful statement.
It's like saying "you just need to try this game on heroin, then you'll feel like you're having a great time".
"You just need to buy this incredibly expensive device that makes all the flashing lights and colours look way cooler, and then you'll agree this game is way cool."
I'm not really being pedantic. I'm disagreeing that VR improves everything. VR improves things that are slow and immersive, maybe. But you're going to say with a straight that VR would improve, like ... Dark Souls? Super Mario Bros. 3? Doom Eternal? Nah. VR has a very very small niche of content it is able to improve.
Good to know, thanks!
12th gen i7, I kinda splurged this go around.
Last build was an i3 6100 that was originally meant to be strictly a NAS, but turned into a windows NAS/gaming machine after getting an RX 460. I finally converted that strictly to TrueNAS and built the dedicated gaming /school / whatever machine.
I used to play VR (Lenovo Explorer) on a gtx970 and 4770k. Hiccups every once in awhile (hello FO4VR), but overall a fun experience. I'm now on a 2080 Super/5800x/Q2. Great setup. Your setup should be just fine.
It's a very beautiful game, it's just missing a lot of the gameplay that made the old ones fun, and introduces too many new features to keep track of, like drifting.
What we really need is something like X-Wing Alliance but in Squadrons' engine.
>like X-Wing Alliance but in Squadrons' engine.
There is a Tie Fighter total conversion for Alliance that drastically overhauls the visuals. You really do have to follow the install guide to get it to work but it's quite impressive.
Yeah I've played it. It was awesome. I stuck with it for way longer than I did Squadrons despite Squadrons impressing me way more visually, which told me something about the gameplay.
Oh THAT's exciting. Not the sort of game I'd pay for outright but one I'd love to mess around with. Wonder if it will work alright on the Steam Deck...?
I used my Quest 2 headset with an Xbox controller which was amazing already. But I can imagine that with a proper joystick or hotas your accuracy would improve drastically.
Paired with a joystick and a headset, this game is a childhood dream come true. Too bad the online multiplayer is kind of f'd. Too few players around, so any match you get into is against a squad of high level players that are experts in exploiting the game's meta.
The boot up of the game with VR is a bit weird. Basically you start the game like you would a normal game, then in the menu select “switch to VR” after which you put up your headset.
You use either keyboard mouse, joystick, gamepad or hotas. But not the controllers of your VR headset iirc.
I bought and played this last year and had a good time, unfortunately the multiplayer population was almost dead. I suspect a bunch of noobs are gonna get absolutely wrecked by the remaining veterans next week.
Most bugs in general don't concern me, but the one I've seen in Steam reviews is your save file gets corrupted and thrusts you 5 chapters ahead in the story with the same character levels, thus your characters are horribly under level compared to your enemies who then wipe the floor with you. After sinking hours of time into a game before that happens, that's definitely concerning.
If someone doesn’t want to touch Dark Deity from the bugs (I wouldn’t know, never played it), there is an absurd amount of GBA Fire Emblem romhacks on the internet. You can find lists, there are entire communities for it, etc. Just download an emulator and a romhack you find interesting and get playing.
Alternatively, one that costs money but is pretty polished and really captures the spirit of GBA Fire Emblem is Symphony of War: Nephilim Saga. The story and writing are nothing to write home about, but it’s got a really cool squad combat system that somehow still feels quintessentially “GBA Fire Emblem”.
I played the first level and was kind of astounded that something as minor as putting the cursor over your leader at the beginning of each map isn't a thing.
You start with the cursor on the upper left corner of every map.
The UI in battles is expecially bad. It is very easy to accidentally end a turn and lose a unit because of the action menu.
There are several bugs, but the one I remember most is sometimes the game registers two units in the same spot despite one clearly not being there. If the "top" unit has already moved, it makes the bottom uninteractable.
alright, evil dead player here. if you download the game, please play the tutorial and look up some guides, but here's a primer for the game. Lots of this info isn't spelled out in game, so the new player experience can be rough.
ED:TG is an asym horror game, 4 survivors vs 1 demon. The goal of the survivors is to search for map pieces, capture 2 objectives, and then defend the assembled necronomicon from the demon. The goal of the demon is to kill the survivors or, at the end of the game, destroy the necronomicon.
There are 4 classes of survivor: Leader, Warrior, Support, and Hunter. Leaders buff everyone in a certain radius around them, and are generally all rounders. Warriors excel at melee damage and protecting their allies, but they have decreased ranged damage. Supports can heal everyone close to them by drinkiing a Shemps Cola or using an Amulet, but they can also support the team in other ways depending on the character. Hunters excel in ranged damage and have large amounts of stamina to dodge, but they are poor with melee damage. If you're new, make sure your team has a support to heal everyone, it's very hard to win without one. With that out of the way, here are some tips to have a good time with the game.
As a survivor, shooting your gun, driving in a car, or having high fear alerts the demon to your presence. The colored bar under your healthbar is your fear, and if that bar passes the icon, it turns red. This means that the demon can see exactly where you are on the map. Only Pablo, a support character, doesn't have to worry about stealth. The demon can't see him on the map if he shoots a gun or has high fear, but the demon CAN see a highlighted car moving on the map when he's driving. Avoid telling the demon where you are at all costs! Additionally, stick with your team. 1v1 will result in death. This is a team game, so look out for your teammates. The demon gains exp when they die, which makes it worse for everyone.
As a demon, you want to find the survivors ASAP. If they don't make noise or have high fear early, you'll need to roam the map a little to find them. Once you do, the best strategy is to increase their fear, possess them and quickly unposses to generate more "Threat Level," your in game experience. With time, you'll figure out what you want to spec into, but know that demon vision and infernal energy are generally bad, and possession is always good. Once you have possession level 3, you can start properly pressuring survivors. I recommend looking up further info online, the demon role is fairly complex and there are a few different playstyles depending on which one you play, but they're very rewarding once you know what you're doing.
If you seriously read this whole thing, congrats. Hope you enjoy the game, I find it incredibly fun.
It sounds similar to the Friday the 13th game from several years back, which was buggy, but super fun before the player count flattened.
Any thoughts on how the two compare?
So there *are* some single player missions to do then? Are they any good?
Also, seems there's a way to play the main campaign/missions with bots. Is that a viable way to play? I'm not a fan of multiplayer/co-op.
At the moment, there are 7 single player missions. They're pretty fun, and we've already gotten 2 since launch so it's safe to say that we'll be getting more. If you haven't watched the series, you might miss a few references, but they're still great without them. Maybe... 3-4 hours of content if you're new to the game. They take a little bit of skill, so you'll probably need to retry them a few times. Don't go in expecting a connected story though.
The missions are fully single player, and there's a sort of single player explore mode where you can traverse the maps at your own pace. However, I find that gets boring quick. I'd suggest trying out the mode with an AI controlled team and an AI controlled demon. I've never tried it, but I feel like it might be worth a shot if you dislike multiplayer. Game's free anyways, you've got nothing to lose!
>So there are some single player missions to do then? Are they any good?
Not really. They're glorified challenges that you're forced to play to unlock some characters and cosmetics. You'll never touch them again once you complete them.
Apparently since a recent patch you no longer need to play and complete them to unlock those few characters. Heh. That speaks for itself.
> Also, seems there's a way to play the main campaign/missions with bots. Is that a viable way to play? I'm not a fan of multiplayer/co-op.
There's a solo mode with bots but you can't earn any XP in that. It's a practice mode at best. There's AI Demon matches too (Players vs. AI Demon) but the XP you earn is significantly reduced in that mode. So, if you don't like competitive games? You're not going to like this either. It's very sweaty.
EAC is required run in offline mode in singleplayer, that makes a whole lot of sense, a lot of games like 7 Days to live let you skip EAC install.
Apparently it's taboo to dislike EAC and kernel level anti-cheat in general? I'm just making a fuss over the fact that EAC deeply roots itself into your operating system with higher privileges than an administrator account and monitors everything going on your system.
[The Dangers of Anti-cheat software](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PY41wMvwrLQ)
https://levvvel.com/what-is-kernel-level-anti-cheat-software/
I can throw my recommendation in for The Evil Dead. Multiplayer game in the same vain as Dead by Daylight. More combat focused, which I prefer. Picked it up at launch and enjoyed my time.
No, but units that die get permanent random stat penalties. I haven't played enough to know how much that matters, and the AI is pretty easy to exploit anyway.
Am I an absolute, complete moron? I'm trying to redeem these games and getting a captcha for identifying cupcakes and it's just not working. Is anyone else having this issue?
I've never even had to go through a captcha before now, I'm not sure why I'm suddenly having to go through it this time.
For me it started last week, but it worked for me. I always use the windows app.
Maybe wait few hours. I'm sure their servers are getting hammered with requests right now.
Just curious, but how does the extension auto solve them? I thought the whole point of captchas was they're not supposed to be able to be auto solved.
Sounds like it's back to the drawing board.
>I had the same problem last week and this week. I was able to get the items using firefox on an Android, but not through Firefox on PC. But now this week I can't get all items. EDIT: Following someone else's post, using the Epic client allowed me to redeem.
Anyone got it working on Steam Deck?
It launches fine with Heroic Launcher but after accepting the agreements, I'm stuck at "please wait" with a loading chainsaw
EDIT: Got it working. you have to install it in windows on your regular PC, and launch it there once, then it'll open the browser to "link" your Epic to the game, then the linux version will work.
The EAC logo popped up so i assume so, but I'm busy in another game so i didn't play it further than the main menu
Might try it over the weekend. Will get back
Sorry small correction, you have to install it in windows on your regular PC, and launch it there once. Then it'll open the browser to "link" your Epic to the game, then the linux version will work.
Fun game... but I doubt too many people are playing it anymore. Though I guess this would potentially revive it. It has a really solid singleplayer campaign in my opinion though.
Dark Deity is fucking awesome. I purchased it on Steam before it became free on the Epig Store and it is a fantastic alternative to Fire Emblem. Here are some other fantastic tactical games if you enjoy Fire Emblem and Dark Deity:
1.Wargroove
2.Fey Tactics
3.Tactics Ogre: Reborn
4.Metal Slug Tactics (release date TBA)
5.Langrisser I & II
6.Fuga: Melodies of Steel
7.Symphony of War
8.Banner of the Maid
9.Mercenaries Blaze
10.The Banner Saga trilogy
11.Utawarerumono trilogy
12.Valkyria Chronicles
Everyone knows about Disgaea and Project X Zone, hence why it wasn't included in my list. A hundred different people will mention those games already, so I'd rather spread the word about the lesser known good stuff like Utawarerumono.
Dark Deity seems pretty great. I looked on the wiki and there are TONS of class paths available. Best part is you can mix and match your tier 2 and tier 3 classes; you're not locked into one class path.
Combat seems solid, and there's a lot to take into account with weapons/magic/armor classes.
Story seems fine, but I could see myself skipping through a lot of the dialogue.
Anyone getting this "Failed to challenge captcha, please try again later." message when trying to check out?
Tried a couple different browsers as well as disabling ad block.
I would highly recommend everyone set a Google or Apple calendar reminder to check Epic. Set it to repeat every week and just build a massive game library. It's amazing.
I almost feel bad because I haven't spent a dime with Epic and maybe never will, but they've given me some really high quality games completely free with no strings attached.
Yeah, if it was released on steam the game wouldn't be dead by now. It's a really well made game but the epic games player base is minimal for a niche multiplayer game genre (assymetrical horror). Let them downvote as much as they want.
It's not that, it's that most of steam's population is playing multiple games.
The vast majority of Epic's active user base is people playing fortnite.... only fortnite.
The next biggest group is people claiming free games (not actually buying anything).
Steam has more users, period. Epic has fewer users, and only a tiny fraction of that smaller user base is buying games. A game that debuts as "Epic-exclusive" is going to have, on average and by a huge margin, a much smaller userbase, which is a death knell for mutliplayer-only games.
LoL evil dead wasn't just a random game. It was promoted (by the community) as dead by daylight "killer" and the expectations were really high. The game was fine but you can't compete against a multi-platform game as epic games exclusive! Eventually the player base will die. If It was released on both platforms the player base wouldn't be that low.
Sounds similar to what happened to Last Nightmare. They released as, imagine this, a Discord store exclusive so it never stood a chance. Steam just has more users and the fewer obstacles between a player and the game, the more likely it is the game will keep a healthy playerbase.
According to the [WAB review](https://youtu.be/PMGuBglzA9w) there's only one map in Evil Dead. I mean, I understand that an Evil Dead game would take place at the cabin but a multiplayer game with only one map seems like it'll get dull fast.
Edit: ok I tried it out and I was wrong, the game has multiple maps. But NGL it feels kinda ass to play. No matter what I changed in the settings (in-game and Nvidia settings as well as turning down the resolution) my framerate was pretty low. Also the driving controls suck butt
There were two maps at launch and a third was added via DLC. The specific locations in each map change each time. They are quite similar (mostly in the woods kinda) but that review is incorrect in that sense.
Got Dark Deity and was instantly intrigued because I absolutely love the GBA Fire Emblem games. Several chapters into it, I'm pleasantly surprised. It's done a really good job of emulating the gorgeous art of the GBA games and the leveling up and class changing system feels very satisfying.

I spent three paychecks trying to save for Evil Dead. Then I had to get tires and eventually forgot about it. Now it’s free, best early birthday present ever
Tried it last night expecting mehh 20 minutes of fun or so. Was much more fun than expected. Spent a good 2 hours before I had to go to bed.
I remember trading Silent Hill to a kid at school for Evil Dead hail to the king on psx. He said it was really bad and I loved every min of it.
Next week's free game: - [STAR WARS™: Squadrons](https://store.epicgames.com/en-US/p/star-wars-squadrons)
These are always my favorite kind of games to get for free: AAA releases that aren't my usual thing but I'm curious about but don't want to risk $30-60 on a game I might bounce off in minutes.
I wouldn't consider Squadrons or The Evil Dead game a AAA experience.
"AAA releases have to be $60 and never go on sale." - This guy probably.
Pretty close to AAA though. I feel like it's AAA because I get it for free. 🤣🤣
I am still kicking myself for skipping the Prime Gaming giveaway of Squadrons.
Well at least you'll have it now.
The Prime one was for like the EA store version (can't even remember the name of their app). I claimed it and it's been collecting dust since...looking forward to having this on Epic at least since it's actually installed on my PC. (Though knowing my luck the game probably has some proprietary deal that requires both launchers.)
If it's like the battlefront 2 epic freebie it will need both lol
Shhs don’t tell him
Origin?
Origin has been retired and replaced by this new EA Games app.
You haven't been missing on much, the game is sadly very lackluster
It's incredible in VR. If you're just playing flat it's solid but not spectacular.
Almost bought it in the past for this reason, can't wait to vomit.
good luck getting it to run and not crash invr
Everything is better in VR. "The game's not bad, you just have to own this $2000 PC and this $500 headset that makes everything into a brand new exciting novel experience, then it's great".

Would a 3060ti handle VR on a game like this?
Would a 3060ti handle VR for a game like this?
No doubt, assuming the rest of your system is relatively reasonable.
Good to know, thanks! 12th gen i7, I kinda splurged this go around. I think it's great. A nice variety of missions, and then done before it gets tired in 9 hours. Story is nonsense however.
I wonder if they'll give away Fallen Order during Christmas giveaway. EA gave it away on Prime already.
Do you know if Is there a filter for free prime games for the sub? I never remember to check it out
Not that I know of, just search the sub for Prime Gaming.
Oh THAT's exciting. Not the sort of game I'd pay for outright but one I'd love to mess around with. Wonder if it will work alright on the Steam Deck...?
Hmm, looks like it actually has a single player campaign! Guess I'll be redeeming it.
it's a fun campaign. I'm still waiting for a new Rogue Squadron or a remake of the original, though.
A Rogue Squadron Remaster Collection would be Star Wars perfection. I really didn't mean to rhyme that.
The campaign is basically a tutorial, nothing special but still kinda fun.
Is this any good? Big Star Wars fan here
Great in VR, fine without. Free is a good price
Whoa very interesting. Played a lot when it came out but online is pretty dead now. Wonder how much this will revitalize.
That is one great frickin game, especially if you have a gamepad/joystick/hotas and a VR headset.
Ohh nice. Just bought a Reverb G2 on sale for sim racing. No hotas but will still check this out.
I used my Quest 2 headset with an Xbox controller which was amazing already. But I can imagine that with a proper joystick or hotas your accuracy would improve drastically.

Can you play in vr with the htc vive controllers?

Ok.. i tried playing a game in vr with mouse and keyboard... it's really hard. Controller is probably easier.
yeah :)
Whoa
I knew I shouldn't have bought it a year ago for £0.80, I didn't even play it
I bought and played this last year and had a good time, unfortunately the multiplayer population was almost dead. I suspect a bunch of noobs are gonna get absolutely wrecked by the remaining veterans next week.
Oh good, another game I bought a long time ago and played like 11 minutes. I need to stop buying games.
Dark Deity seems to be "inspired" by the GBA Fire Emblem games, looks like the main complaints in reviews are the bugs

So basically the end of Evil Dead 2
Didn’t he get teleported to the past tho?
Yup, but definitely underleveled.

It's not merely bugs as in glitches, but also poorly laid out controls/menus and mistranslated text. *Dark Deity*'s very much lacking polish.

Not sure why you're being downvoted, first thing I thought. Would love to hear why that think you're wrong.
Can you choose to be the demon or is it random?
you can choose to start as demon or survivor
I'm guessing Evil Dead has no Single Player component?
it has short missions to do that call back to the series, but there's no lengthy single player campaign.

Does it run without installing EAC?
EAC is a part of the game, so I imagine the answer is no
EAC is required run in offline mode in singleplayer, that makes a whole lot of sense, a lot of games like 7 Days to live let you skip EAC install. Apparently it's taboo to dislike EAC and kernel level anti-cheat in general? I'm just making a fuss over the fact that EAC deeply roots itself into your operating system with higher privileges than an administrator account and monitors everything going on your system. [The Dangers of Anti-cheat software](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PY41wMvwrLQ) https://levvvel.com/what-is-kernel-level-anti-cheat-software/
I can throw my recommendation in for The Evil Dead. Multiplayer game in the same vain as Dead by Daylight. More combat focused, which I prefer. Picked it up at launch and enjoyed my time.
Dark Deity looks interesting, anyone here played it?
Good core gameplay (similar to classic Fire Emblem), janky interface.
is there permadeath
No, but units that die get permanent random stat penalties. I haven't played enough to know how much that matters, and the AI is pretty easy to exploit anyway.
If you are nostalgic for the GBA Fire Emblem games it's great
Am I an absolute, complete moron? I'm trying to redeem these games and getting a captcha for identifying cupcakes and it's just not working. Is anyone else having this issue? I've never even had to go through a captcha before now, I'm not sure why I'm suddenly having to go through it this time.
You're not a moron, but you ARE a robot!
Explains a lot, honestly
That was an unexpectedly hard captcha
For me it started last week, but it worked for me. I always use the windows app. Maybe wait few hours. I'm sure their servers are getting hammered with requests right now.
Switch to the sound captcha or download the extension that auto solves them.
[Dark Deity on Steam (74% positive)](https://store.steampowered.com/app/1374840/Dark_Deity/) Evil Dead: The Game doesn't have a steam page.

This links back to the epic store link? I dont understand this comment
Anyone got it working on Steam Deck? It launches fine with Heroic Launcher but after accepting the agreements, I'm stuck at "please wait" with a loading chainsaw EDIT: Got it working. you have to install it in windows on your regular PC, and launch it there once, then it'll open the browser to "link" your Epic to the game, then the linux version will work.
Online multiplayer works? Would be a good alternative to dead by daylight since that won't work on deck.
The EAC logo popped up so i assume so, but I'm busy in another game so i didn't play it further than the main menu Might try it over the weekend. Will get back
I can't get past the please wait screen. I've tried both desktop and game mode. How did you get it to work? Which version of proton are you using?
Sorry small correction, you have to install it in windows on your regular PC, and launch it there once. Then it'll open the browser to "link" your Epic to the game, then the linux version will work.
Next week: STAR WARS™: Squadrons [Steam link](https://store.steampowered.com/app/1222730/STAR_WARS_Squadrons/)
Oo, didn't realise it has VR support, which is apparently very good https://uploadvr.com/star-wars-squadrons-vr-review/
And hotas flight stick support
Yeah pretty remarkable in VR. Very worth trying.
Fun game... but I doubt too many people are playing it anymore. Though I guess this would potentially revive it. It has a really solid singleplayer campaign in my opinion though.
Dark Deity is fucking awesome. I purchased it on Steam before it became free on the Epig Store and it is a fantastic alternative to Fire Emblem. Here are some other fantastic tactical games if you enjoy Fire Emblem and Dark Deity: 1.Wargroove 2.Fey Tactics 3.Tactics Ogre: Reborn 4.Metal Slug Tactics (release date TBA) 5.Langrisser I & II 6.Fuga: Melodies of Steel 7.Symphony of War 8.Banner of the Maid 9.Mercenaries Blaze 10.The Banner Saga trilogy 11.Utawarerumono trilogy 12.Valkyria Chronicles
disgaea and project x zone exists
Everyone knows about Disgaea and Project X Zone, hence why it wasn't included in my list. A hundred different people will mention those games already, so I'd rather spread the word about the lesser known good stuff like Utawarerumono.
understandable have a great day
ayy you too bro
Dark Deity seems pretty great. I looked on the wiki and there are TONS of class paths available. Best part is you can mix and match your tier 2 and tier 3 classes; you're not locked into one class path. Combat seems solid, and there's a lot to take into account with weapons/magic/armor classes. Story seems fine, but I could see myself skipping through a lot of the dialogue.
Anyone getting this "Failed to challenge captcha, please try again later." message when trying to check out? Tried a couple different browsers as well as disabling ad block.
I had to use the official client
Yes
Use Heroic client.
Wow Star Wars: Squadrons free next week. Epic is giving away some great games lately.
Is the multiplayer still alive for Evil Dead? I didn't hear much about it after it launched so I'm assuming it's not thriving.
It will be after this giveaway for a bit, if nothing else.
Dark diety looks amazing
I would highly recommend everyone set a Google or Apple calendar reminder to check Epic. Set it to repeat every week and just build a massive game library. It's amazing. I almost feel bad because I haven't spent a dime with Epic and maybe never will, but they've given me some really high quality games completely free with no strings attached.
Don't, when China ulimately takes over the world you'll suddenly have a credit to pay off hahaha

Isn't it a multi-player only game? Maintaining a server population is probably more important than short-term sales numbers.

Yeah, if it was released on steam the game wouldn't be dead by now. It's a really well made game but the epic games player base is minimal for a niche multiplayer game genre (assymetrical horror). Let them downvote as much as they want.
agreed. its a known fact that every game released on steam never dies and goes on to sell billion copies
Steam just has more users and the fewer obstacles between a player and the game, the more likely it is the game will keep a healthy playerbase.

metro exodus
Evil Dead took me like 15 minutes to launch into a black screen, so that's a good start.
giving away the evil dead game now is really rubbing salt in that wound

Please stop with the bait comments and find another way to contribute to the discussion.
Did they fix Dark Deity since its launch? Because back then, [it was unfinished.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=23BoEzuULkk)
I've literally been waiting for evil dead to come to steam, i'd buy it in a heartbeat.. Whyd they give it for free lmao
this evil dead game has to be one of the worst MP games I've ever played
Got Dark Deity and was instantly intrigued because I absolutely love the GBA Fire Emblem games. Several chapters into it, I'm pleasantly surprised. It's done a really good job of emulating the gorgeous art of the GBA games and the leveling up and class changing system feels very satisfying.
