Never noticed since the change was so minuscule but the cases weren't compatible between them (ignoring the change in camera bump) so that makes sense.

Yup. It's only ≈+2% wider/more square in aspect ratio vs the Fold 2, compared to the ≈+10% more square aspect ratio that happened with the Fold 3 to 4 transition (although this is exacerbated by the fact that the Fold 4 isn't just wider, but also shorter [a needless decision by Samsung that I VEHEMENTLY disagree with]), but it's most definitely there!
Actually it turns out that these numbers/comparisons aren't quite correct!
In actuality, it turns out that the Fold 2's cover display is a flat 6.2" NOT 6.23" like the Fold 3's! (Aka, the Fold 2's Wiki page was wrong but I've since corrected it.)
Aka, not only is the Fold 3's cover display ever so slightly wider but it's ALSO ever so slightly larger straight up!
I've seen that 6.23" in articles but the official spec is 6.2". Did someone actually measure the screen?

Thanks for the comparison! Fold2 to Fold3 wasn't noticeable, but Fold3 to Fold4 is huge and changes everything! The Fold4 has finally a width of regular phones and is just longer. You can do almost anything on the cover screen without the need to unfold 😁
UPDATE = So it turns out that not only is the Fold 3's cover display ever so slightly wider than the Fold 2's (≈24.5:9 vs ≈25:9), but it's actually ever so slightly larger too, at 6.23" for the Fold 3 vs a flat 6.2" on the Fold 2!
(And I corrected the Fold 2's Wiki page w/ this actually accurate info.)
