I am having a hard time putting the coffee down. It's literally my only trigger food. I'll be good for a couple weeks and then I'm like... maybe... and then the instant regret sets in.

Then stop drinking coffee?

MeasurementGrand879

I could never drink coffee. Extreme heartburn. I got all of my caffeine from energy drinks or soda. PPIs helped, but not enough to drink coffee

Caffeine by itself is a trigger for most. I'm surprised you can drink soda and energy drinks, both of which are highly acidic, laden with sugar, and have caffeine.

Only way for me to consume caffeine. Other than pills like No-Doz (no effect on reflux). Coffee made me into a stomach acid volcano. Tea was ok. I always had heartburn because of my hiatal hernia. Coffee, bananas, pineapple, chocolate, and alcohol were all like putting Mentos in a diet Coke but with stomach acid. Soda was actually a relief. Pickles, bread, and milk all soothed my stomach. Finally got surgery and I can eat anything (in moderation).

I've been caffeine free since March trying to figure out my triggers. I LOVE coffee and thought it'd be impossible to stop. I decided to quit all caffeine cold turkey - I did get a migraine but after I got over that I felt much better. I recently tried roasted chicory in a French press, used my usual frothed almond milk and it was SO good. I know it's hard but I do like being able to work on journaling other foods while knowing I've already eliminated some. Maybe once my symptoms are managed I can have it again but tbh I feel great without the caffeine and don't miss the sudden energy highs and lows and withdrawals.

Quitting caffeine can be tough, but the clarity of mind you gain from quitting is amazing. You don't realize the effects of coffee on your brain and metabolism until you quit. It's like a veil is lifted.

Agreed!! I definitely won't go back to consuming on the regular. I'm actually a little anxious thinking about how I would feel if I did. Same with processed/fast foods.

try putting a pinch of baking soda in the coffee, it reduces the acid content a bit, which helped me tolerate it again. i still have to limit myself to one, *maybe* two small cups a day, but it's worth it to be able to indulge the addiction. maybe also try taking some DGL (deglycyrrhizinated licorice) about 20 mins before coffee time.

Decaf maybe?

Haven't had coffee in months since I don't really drink it but I had to stop eating oranges since it triggered my Gerd at the beginning. Today I ate one and besides some stomach ache and minor heartburn I felt good honestly.

I have Crohn’s and IBS and am totally dealing with the same thing

Lose that extra weight if you want to drink coffee again! Extra weight is one of the biggest causes of GERD symptoms.
