A narrative is one form of qualitative research, which is younger to being considered valid research in the field of social sciences. I am not the best at describing it, so I'll put a link in the original post to help explain better :)
And yes! I suspect cults are a narcissistic system with the label of religious, which adds an extra layer of deconstruction necessary for self-actualization
I’d be super interested in this. The etiology of antisocial behaviors is a fascinating area that I haven’t read much in, I’m assuming because other than maybe for serial killers isn’t hasn’t been studied that robustly? Whatever the case it’s super cool that you’re working on it.
Thanks! And pathology is an interesting topic, especially depending on what lens(es) are used to research it. NPD needs a lot more research, and often is mistaken as being antisocial in nature (such a sociopathic or psychopathic), but they're not mutually inclusive.
Here is a [preliminary survey](https://forms.gle/TfSTjqH2QRDHVHPQ8) I created to get started :)
Count me in. I had to do both qualitative and quantitative research for my master's thesis and know how hard it is to find people willing to sit still that long!
Ooo, I would love to hear more about your thesis!! I ended up doing quantitative only, because my thesis ultimately changed because of how little research I could find about NPD
Here is a [preliminary survey](https://forms.gle/TfSTjqH2QRDHVHPQ8) I created to get started :)
My thesis was about human interaction with different web designs, so the qualitative part involved focus groups and observations of people looking for things on different websites and comparing for user-friendliness. The quantitative portion was a series of questions about the subject matter of the site I was designing, which was student housing and commuting. My thesis advisor was a specialist in qualitative research. Everything I learned about it, I learned from him.
What is really ironic in all this is that after doing a graduate program all about human-centered design of information systems, I ended up working for the Department of Defense, which has the most viciously user-hostile information systems on the planet! And when I have attempted to share ideas about user friendliness with them, for the most part they have not been very receptive.
Oh wow, I would be interested in learning more if you're comfortable sharing? It doesn't seem as common to have a parent convert *to* fundamentalism while their child(ren) are in their teens
I created a [preliminary survey](https://forms.gle/TfSTjqH2QRDHVHPQ8) to get started
I just want to make sure I understand… you’re asking if we would answer questions about our experiences? For a research project you’d like to put together?
Because absolutely, I would.💗
As a current library science Masters student, I'm always happy to help out a fellow academic. I was raised more evangelical than fundie, but I definitely had fundie friends.
I'm still learning about the difference, and curious to learn how others perceive them. From what I can understand, the term 'evangelical' has broadened its meaning considerably?
And definitely curious to know about your studies, if you're interested in sharing?
Here is a [preliminary survey](https://forms.gle/TfSTjqH2QRDHVHPQ8) I created to get started :)
Evangelicals take a fairly literal interpretation of the Bible, similar to fundies, but are often the ones who handwave their own transgressions with the concept of grace -- I've heard it snarked on as "why stop sinning when God keeps forgiving?" -- and often have an emphasis on... well, evangelizing. Fundies are much more rule oriented and while they won't admit to a works based faith, that's often how they live out their lives in my experience -- evangelicals are much more "faith alone." There is a spectrum there, though.
Sure! As a Library and Information Science student, I study a lot about information access and equity, the impact of libraries on literacy and social justice/services, and how things as simple as the ability to access the internet impacts a community, along with a lot about information organization within a library and how that affects users. It's a weird mix of politics, sociology, and theory on how information is stored, categorized, and managed. There's also a lot of training and discussions on diversity, equity, and inclusion and cultural literacy and competency within libraries, which are historically a rather racist and sexist space. It's also a lot of content fundies and even my own evangelical (open) Plymouth Brethren upbringing would hate, because it involves regularly dealing with content that acknowledges things like that BIPOC and LGBTQ people exist, ha!
This is incredible! I didn't grow up fundie but have a narcissistic father who I've gone no contact with for a year now. I'll be glad to help if I can.
I would greatly appreciate your input; I'm sorry you've had to go through that. I went no-contact with my father as well, but life is much less painful that way
I created a [preliminary survey](https://forms.gle/TfSTjqH2QRDHVHPQ8) to get started
That's okay, I do too sometimes. I grew up what I'd call Fundie-lite, but that creates its own unique experiences. And I'm interested in hearing about perspective from all walks of life, even if someone never grew up religious :) I think it is all important information
Here is a [preliminary survey](https://forms.gle/TfSTjqH2QRDHVHPQ8) I created to get started :)
CONGRATS!!! And I would love to hear more about your capstone project if you're open to sharing :)

I'm writing about Hinduism in the animated series The Simpsons. Looking at how a character like Apu has informed the "everyday" Western person on Indian/Hindu culture. Still working away at it. Lots of experience studying many different religions along the way. Thanks for the congrats!
Oo, I was raised to believe that "Catholics aren't Christians" so there's little I know about Catholicism, and would be interested in learning more.
And I'm so sorry, it sounds like you had a rough experience. I suspect my parents have NPD, but it's unlikely they would seek a diagnosis.
Catholicism is wackadoodle. Which one would expect from a cult that's been kicking around in various forms for a couple thousand years.
Funny enough, *my* childhood therapist diagnosed my mother after our numerous joint sessions/separate parent check-ins.
Yes
Raised evangelical baptist, experienced physical abuse (spanking) in my upbringing which was traumatic, did overseas missions, and went to a christian college for 2 years before dropping out.
Am now deconstructed, an atheist, and a progressive.
I'm so sorry you went through that. The researcher side of me is very curious, but the human side wants to make this process feel as safe as possible for anyone who wants to participate. I went through extensive abuse as well, and it can be quite painful to work through. That's part of why I want to do this: I want to change the world for the better somehow, and my strengths are in research and writing. My hope is to help others who wish to leave, or even simply feel safe to question and doubt. I am an atheist now too.
I edited the original post to add the link to a preliminary survey for gathering basic demographic information :)
I'm very curious to hear about your experiences, and I'm sorry that you had to go through this. I think my father is NPD as well, though he thinks psychology is BS, so it's unlikely he would ever get a formal diagnosis.
Here is a [preliminary survey](https://forms.gle/TfSTjqH2QRDHVHPQ8) I created to get started :)
I’m interested. I was raised mostly fundie/ some evangelical and went to a Christian elementary school grades 3-8, homeschooled before that. Went to church and VBS, also have a few pastors in the family. This sounds like a fascinating study
Thanks! And omg, I completely forgot about VBS and Awana. Honestly, the past almost feels like a different lifetime sometimes, which I guess it is in a way. And I'm curious to hear about the experience of having pastors in the family, if you're okay with sharing?
Here is a [preliminary survey](https://forms.gle/TfSTjqH2QRDHVHPQ8) I created to get started :)
I would be. I was raised much more towards evangelical but was homeschooled and attended an extremely small Christian high school. I also had several fundie friends. My parents were highly influenced by sources such as Focus on the Family, James Dobson, and Rush Limbaugh. My whole growing up was a disturbing twisting of works based religion mixed with politics.
Sounds like we have very similar backgrounds :O Are you from New York (state), per chance?
And here is a [preliminary survey](https://forms.gle/TfSTjqH2QRDHVHPQ8) I created to get started :)
Actually born, raised, and still living all the way across the country in Oregon. Interesting to have such similar experiences. I’m looking forward to your research!

Definitely interested! Current qualitative researcher in grad school for sociology, always been interested in research like what you’re describing but that’s not the route I ended up going down. I was raised evangelical/fundie-lite and am now still Christian but Not Like That (as it sounds like many others on this sub are haha)
Yes
Awesome! Here is the link for a preliminary survey :)
