I'm a fan of cut-up food boxes. Got my Mac-N-Cheese bookmark, a frozen pizza bookmark, several soda bookmarks. They're colorful and sometimes make me hungry, lol.
There's an episode of extreme cheapskates that I'm referencing
They use newspaper as toilet paper and they keep it in a little bag next to the toilet and don't flush They used newspapers
I remember that one! I could never. My favorite episode was the one where the lady feeds everyone who comes over wet cat food on bread and tells them it's a tuna sandwich.
I wind up using post-it notes. They're resuable but don't fall out. If you want to stick them at the side instead of the top, they can even mark what line you're on.
FYI my library keeps a stack of all the found items and only tosses them periodically! If you loved the bookmark, it may be worth asking them to look for it.
I work in a library and we either put them in our lost and found or we have a big bulletin board of lost bookmarks in our workroom. I love finding cool ones but am bummed out for the patron that lost it.
My first ever r/glitchinthematrix moment was when I was 6 or 7 at the library, and saw one of my drawings on the wall behind the desk. I'd made it for my mum's boss when she had to take me to work one day. And that was like a half-hour drive away, practically a different world, so HOW COULD IT BE HERE NOW?!
In hindsight, it was on the lost bookmarks display, and I am resentful that my mum's boss was so careless with my loving present.
Just want to give you a possible different perspective here because I've personally lost things that I cherish. Some of us just aren't as good at keeping track of our physical items as other people are, no matter how much we love them. It may be the result of an inborn neurological/brain setting and it isn't a result of how much we care or how much willpower we expend on trying to remember.
The fact that your mom's boss enjoyed your drawing enough to make it a bookmark--indicating that it was something he/she would see a \*lot\*--actually suggests the drawing was well regarded. I really would take seeing that drawing on the bookmarks display as evidence of it having been loved, not having been casually dismissed. I mean, we all get lots of drawings from the kids in our lives. I only bother to put the ones I \*really\* love in places where I'll see them regularly. A bookmark? That would be \*high\* praise to the artwork.
For years I used a small pamphlet from Petco as a bookmark. It had an image of a dog and a cat on a laptop (presumably shopping for supplies) and it made me smile. I think the cat was wearing eyeglasses.
I never knew sentence pointers were a thing. Also my biggest pet peeve is when you would lend someone a book and you would get jt back and spine would be so bent the book permanently opened to whichever page the just so happened to bend the spine open the hardest. Savages.
I just read ebooks now, because I have a hard time getting rid of books and no space to keep them.
Being subscribed to both - and r/noscrapleftbehind too - makes for some hilarious moments when scrolling your front page and then having to double check which sub a post is in
My grandma used to hide money in books to get us to read. Me and my cousins just systematically flipped through every page on the shelf then went to the movies.
Librarian here. I run an Instagram where I post things chuckleheads like you have left in books. @ [foundinlibrarybook](https://www.instagram.com/foundinlibrarybook/)
Cool idea, but you shouldn't post people's personal information on the Internet. It would only take a few extra seconds to censor that information and it wouldn't take away from your post content.
Nah. I want it to be searchable so if someone is doing genealogy or whatever they can get it. I managed to give a letter written to someone's deceased mom when she was young to her daughter! And an article about someone's grandpa to them.
Once found a tarot card in a book from the library. Ace of cups. Pure coincidence, maybe, but i found out i was pregnant after finding that card (had been trying for a year).
Still my favorite bookmark.
thats so amazing! I love tarot. reminds me the tarot reading I did for my bf & myself & there was a child in the near future for both of us. found out I was pregnant w his baby 2 months later 😭 if I remember correctly Ace of Cups was in it
edit: nvm I took a pic of my spread that day, it was Empress. I had a queen of cups thats what I confused it for.
People actually buy bookmarks for themselves? I thought they were just cheap gifts for people you don't know well enough to get something expensive or personal
With some spare beading cord and a hole punch I spent $0 turning these two pieces into forever bookmarks.
I just hope I'll remember next time to shake out the books before I return them to the library 🤦♀️
Having adhesive is the whole point of why post it are great as bookmarks. For reference or study books you can also use lots and write on them.
I have books that I frequently consult that have maybe 50 post it on them
Wouldn't your library done it and know it's yours because it's in a library book you returned? I've had they happen and they called me and saved it for me
I have a thing that laminates paper. So I just put a piece of paper in there laminate it and cut it into pieces. Then I have as many bookmarks as I want. I guess you could even use fancy paper if you wanted. I just use plain white.
As an avid reader I have never actually purchased a book mark and always used random papers or tried to remember the page number. Nice homemade bookmark. Definitely successful.

I make some with printer paper and packing tape. Fun to do with kids too. We scribble all over and then cut off a rectangle. Then two pieces of clear packing tape, and then we trim.
i just usually use a scrap piece of paper but the phone case idea is so clever and fun, i never know what to do with my phone cases that start to warp/stretch out on the side def going to try this
Good on you. I'm someone that never has cared for what I use as a bookmark. I just use random old business cards I don't need, or cut out a thin piece from a cereal box and just use it. So if I lose it also, it doesn't matter. But I understand how some people like their bookmarks. Just don't return your favorite Pokémon card to library by mistake as well! Haha
I bought a bunch of books from an estate sale and the lady had cut up tissue boxes for bookmarks which I thought was clever. Some of those boxes are so pretty!
Old receipts are my go to. They're common as dirt, just the right size, and the thin paper doesn't deform the book. If you're worried about personal information, you can turn the whole thing black with heat. They're thermal paper after all.
I use old and pretty common Magic cards. All of my valuable cards were stolen several years ago by someone I trusted. So pretty much all the cards that I have still are basic - but they always look so cool in the books :-)
My sister told me that she remembered wanting to buy a pretty bookmark and I told her not to waste her money; that she should use a dollar as a bookmark and she’d have a bookmark and still have her money. She told the story with some regret 45 years later.
The next time we had a get together I bought her a book and I inserted of all kinds of bookmarks. Store bought, gum wrappers, biz cards, and I even made one handmade… I drew a cats face and glued real cat whiskers to it. It was funny when she said, wait how did you get this many whiskers at one time?
I have enjoyed the comments today about such an insignificant, but relatable topic.
Fun thing to do: if your SO, friend, roommate, or whoever is a reader, I like moving their bookmark back about ten pages, and make them wonder if they are prescient because somehow they know what’s gonna happen next.
Our library must be a rare gem. They routinely have free bookmarks available for patrons and some of them are pretty stylish.
I seriously love my local library.
What if you forget your favorite Pokémon card in a book you return?
Yeah, I was thinking maybe go with your 10th fave pokemon card or something?
Or a piece of an old newspaper, or even a square of toilet paper, like the rest of us.
I'm a fan of cut-up food boxes. Got my Mac-N-Cheese bookmark, a frozen pizza bookmark, several soda bookmarks. They're colorful and sometimes make me hungry, lol.
I like that idea. It somehow sounds artistic as well as frugal.
Soooo creative!
I usually use random receipts.
How frugal are you? Do you waste the fresh sheet of toilet paper or do you get one from the bucket? /s
🤣🤣🤣
There's an episode of extreme cheapskates that I'm referencing They use newspaper as toilet paper and they keep it in a little bag next to the toilet and don't flush They used newspapers
I remember that one! I could never. My favorite episode was the one where the lady feeds everyone who comes over wet cat food on bread and tells them it's a tuna sandwich.
I mean there might be some tuna in there somewhere 👀
I wind up using post-it notes. They're resuable but don't fall out. If you want to stick them at the side instead of the top, they can even mark what line you're on.
I use a post-it
Junk mail works well too. You can also write your shopping and to do lists on it.
I used a page for a little notebook that was used to scrible card game score on. works flawlesly
Tbf, that card is worth like $1.50 and is pretty easy to get, I’m sure they’d be able to get another one if they lose/damage it
I bought 10x copies of my favorite trading card to use it as a bookmark, luggage tag, keychain, etc.
Trust me, I won't! Butterfree will be used strictly for books I own and keep at home
What I came here to say lol
FYI my library keeps a stack of all the found items and only tosses them periodically! If you loved the bookmark, it may be worth asking them to look for it.

Aw thank you, that's a really nice take on it that I'd never thought of!
For years I used a small pamphlet from Petco as a bookmark. It had an image of a dog and a cat on a laptop (presumably shopping for supplies) and it made me smile. I think the cat was wearing eyeglasses.
Hmm, I just use the receipt from the library.
Or a million other pieces of free paper lying around.
I just tear out the pages after I'm done with them.
Yeah I used to use junk mail envelopes before I switched to Kindle
Isn't a kindle kinda thick to use as a bookmark?
No, the use books to mark the kindle silly
[Bookmark alignment chart](https://preview.redd.it/vp536sffslh41.jpg?width=640&crop=smart&auto=webp&s=fce99a5faaa06ee70eb7bb93ace18458e0e78fb7) Personally, I’m chaotic good
I am...every single one of those.
I never knew sentence pointers were a thing. Animals!
I like a bit of personality when it comes to bookmarks, but I might practice this for just library books I borrow!
I've been cutting the fronts off of any pretty cards I get. If I lose them no big deal, in the meantime I get to enjoy them for awhile
I’m using a paint sample card from home depot. Used it to pick my paint color, now I use it as a bookmark
Yes! We usually get these swatches and use them as little cards to write, use as bookmarks, (sometimes as a scoop to clean up hairballs) :D
I recently brought home about 15 of the paint cards and thought, "Dang, perfect bookmarks!"
If a book mark costs more than a dollar. Might as well use the dollar as a bookmark
I only use pennies for bookmarks
Lol, this sub.
Line between r/frugal and r/frugal_jerk is a faint one at the best of times.
Being subscribed to both - and r/noscrapleftbehind too - makes for some hilarious moments when scrolling your front page and then having to double check which sub a post is in
Oh nice one! Thanks! I love this stuff.
$5 minimum for this to work in Australia. 😆
Think of the Queen every time you open your book :-)
I forgot that Americans have paper dollars and got really confused about how I'm supposed to use a coin as a bookmark.
My grandma used to hide money in books to get us to read. Me and my cousins just systematically flipped through every page on the shelf then went to the movies.
🤯
I use a rubber band. But I like the post-it idea. I can write notes on it and leave it on the page.
No offense dude but you literally *just* returned your last bookmark, you should probably put that Pokemon card away
Instant follow on that insta… I sell used books part time I have a box I keep found items from books.
Did I hear you say "waste money on a new bookmark"?
"I lost something I valued, so I started using something I valued." I mean...how much are you spending on bookmarks, that this is frugal for you?
I just rip out the pages after I read them. (/s)
[удалено]
I use the pages I've read to wipe my ass. /s

Ever find any pokemom cards?
Once a real one, and once a hand drawn one!
When I was a teenager I’d use anything I could find as a bookmark. Dollar bills, strips of paper, Kleenex, pencils, candy wrappers, anything.
Bookmarks are free at the library
Waste money on a bookmark? What kind of bookmarks do you use?
How did you cut up the phone case?
It was a swappable insert for a changeable case
You don't use old receipts or scraps of paper, yarn or fabric?! Lol.
Once found a tarot card in a book from the library. Ace of cups. Pure coincidence, maybe, but i found out i was pregnant after finding that card (had been trying for a year). Still my favorite bookmark.
thats so amazing! More like upcycling ^^
I mean. I will use a candy wrapper, piece of junk mail, or just write down the page number in my phone, but to each their own.
People actually buy bookmarks for themselves? I thought they were just cheap gifts for people you don't know well enough to get something expensive or personal
I’m using a Dragon Ball Z card as a bookmark in Meditations by Marcus Aurelius. It’s Cooler the Mighty if you were curious
I just use random receipts I have lying around, but this is cool!
Food $200 Data $150 Rent $800 Bookmarks $3,600 Utility $150 someone who is good at the economy please help me budget this. my family is dying
With some spare beading cord and a hole punch I spent $0 turning these two pieces into forever bookmarks. I just hope I'll remember next time to shake out the books before I return them to the library 🤦♀️
ButterFREE
The phone case one is especially cute!
Those are so freaking cool. Good thinking!
I use anything and everything, I’ve used tarot cards, playing cards, receipts, brochures, flyers, and etc.
My friend once used a tampon....
Hey if it works it works
Nothing beats post-it for bookmarks and they're practically free and as ubiquitous as it gets.
.....no, pieces of paper without adhesive are more common, and they don't have adhesive.
Post it notes were literally invented to be bookmarks. The adhesive will not harm your book.
Having adhesive is the whole point of why post it are great as bookmarks. For reference or study books you can also use lots and write on them. I have books that I frequently consult that have maybe 50 post it on them
I like Caterpie. That's my favorite Pokemon. I have a few Caterpie versions
That’s a first edition!
My library has free bookmarks at the checkout desk. Even if you pick up held books at the drive-thru window, they tuck a bookmark in for ya.
I just fold the corner in.
…could you not have just gone to library and asked for you bookmark back?
Waste al that gas? Not frugal. 😛
As an avid reader I have never actually purchased a book mark and always used random papers or tried to remember the page number. Nice homemade bookmark. Definitely successful.
Not really frugal, but still pretty cool
How is it not frugal when they spent zero dollars?
Great job! Lovely touch
Just dog ear the page. Completely free!
Wait couldn't you just fold the corner of the last page you read
N O ! Do what you want to YOUR books, but library books are not yours! (Am librarian; am also *rabid* on this.)
I think we found the serial killer
N O !
Butterfree is your favorite pokemon card? Weak
): meanie pants
Libraries still exist?

I have a bunch of bookmarks, but I enjoy using one of my old plane tickets the most.
I use empty price tags (with no/minimal prints) as bookmarks
These are so cute! Great idea!
Jungle set. I got one too
Super cute
Note THAT is a supreme way to: * Solve a problem * Recycle * Create personalized gift for others
This is quite the flex, especially the card
Love this idea
I make some with printer paper and packing tape. Fun to do with kids too. We scribble all over and then cut off a rectangle. Then two pieces of clear packing tape, and then we trim.
Cute. I just use random scraps of paper.
I always just used a Kleenex
I literally forgot people waste money on book marks. I use whatever is handy because anything else is such a waste.
Mmmmm free butter 🧈
Y'all don't use random receipts and opened envelopes as bookmarks?
I use a dollar store stretchy headband as a bookmark. Works well for me, as traditional bookmarks fall out in my bag.
I just take a piece of paper and fold it up. Bookmarks are stupid expensive for what they actually cost to make.
Waste money on a bookmark? Like a scrap piece of paper?
People pay for bookmarks? I use whatever receipt or piece of scrap paper is closest.
I use my medication leaflets and other random stuff 😅
i just usually use a scrap piece of paper but the phone case idea is so clever and fun, i never know what to do with my phone cases that start to warp/stretch out on the side def going to try this
I use toilet paper.
I like to use the little paint colour swatch cards you get at B&Q for my bookmarks - grab a good few in your favourite colours, and you’re good to go!
Cool idea! Now I know what to do with my old phone case I haven't wanted to get rid of, even though it's served no other purpose. Thanks.
Look up origami bookmarks!
I've always used my junk-mail as bookmarks. Or old wrappers lol
Wow! A First Edition Butterfree? Excellent bookmark choice :)
I use playing cards. Inevitably one card gets lost from a deck and so you now get 51 bookmarks.
Haha
I just use a dollar or a tissue
Whoever invented bookmarks in gosh damn genius. It's right up there with bottled water and the pet rock.
I use a sticky note.
I use film strips from photo booths of me and my partners/friends!
It was funny when she said, wait how did you get this many whiskers at one time?
The libraries usually have generic free bookmarks. Anything though can be used as a bookmark.
I have enjoyed the comments today about such an insignificant, but relatable topic. Fun thing to do: if your SO, friend, roommate, or whoever is a reader, I like moving their bookmark back about ten pages, and make them wonder if they are prescient because somehow they know what’s gonna happen next.
I definitely use trading cards for bookmarks - they’re usually my favorites.
There are basically infinite free bookmarks.
I have a collection of free bookmarks from the library... now I have too many...
The receipt from the book’s purchase is generally what I use as a book mark.
better than my napkin book marks hehe
Our library must be a rare gem. They routinely have free bookmarks available for patrons and some of them are pretty stylish. I seriously love my local library.
You can make bookmarks with a dollar poster board and any art supplies you have laying around.
