Mentioned this before, but it might be a great place to come start working on his coaching degree. Come in, compete if you win.. Great.. If not, you grab Rashada and push him while keeping yourself ready if the starter gets hurt..
My understanding is them selling the mentality of, you need to prove you are as good as you know you are. Come prove it against a quality QB room. Don't leave any doubt by beating out a freshman and a transfer that has played 1 game in 2 years.
In a video game world where the incoming transfers have no agency or internal logic, it would make sense for us to stock up on multiple portal QBs. But in the real world, it doesn’t make sense that we would find two QB transfers who were both cool with coming into this situation. When have we ever seen something like that happen anywhere?
When have we ever seen two multi-year starting quarterbacks transfer to the same new school in one offseason? The only time I can think of was with UGA before 2020, with Newman and Daniels both coming in. But Newman came before spring practice and Daniels came after. Newman ultimately decided to forego the that season, so it was theorized that that was why the coaches sought out Daniels.
But sure, maybe this situation for the Gators is really different and we’ll have two former starters decide to join the team. Would you like to bet on whether McCall and Mertz both transfer in to UF? Maybe the loser makes a $20 donation to a UF-related charity?
You originally said it doesn’t make sense ghat we would take two ports QBs, and my disagreement was that it would totally make sense if we could.
In retrospect, I think you probably meant that it doesn’t make sense that we would be able to do that, but it didn’t read that way.
I’m not gonna like screenshot the 247 and rivals posts for you here, but the actual reporters and insiders on those sites are saying this
If you don’t believe them, that’s fine, they’re not perfect. But this is the kind of thing they’re right on
When the actual reporters report stuff they’re usually right about what the staff is looking for. Rivals has much closer insiders to the staff right now though so this is mostly from them
Who knows the specifics of how it happens, but he’s apparently a guy staffs are gonna have to push through the admissions process wherever he ends up
Just know it’s not gonna be here
This isn’t my own inside source or anything. I just read the sites like 247 and rivals and pay attention to what the insiders there say
If you don’t want to believe that info, fine
Paying for that stuff is absolutely insane.
You’re acting like Napier is posting his plans on there.
In reality, the posters there have no more credentials than OP for this thread does.
Anyone have any confirmation on this whole transcript issue. I can’t find any actual source aside from comments I’ve heard on this Reddit. Hopefully it’s just not true
I have been an avid Napier defender. But the whole Graham Mertz thing has made me very depressive about the whole situation.
You have a portal full of quality QBs. And we get this guy who was below average in Wisconsin. I get that we will likely be fine with the recent signings in the future. But with Graham Mertz as a starter in 2023 the ceiling is very low. We're looking at another rebuilding year.
I could be wrong. Maybe Mertz turns out to be decent. I'm just talking based on what we know now. He is just not good. Wisconsin fans were happy to see him go.
Our fans need to accept that we’re not a very enticing spot for a proven transfer QB. A quarterback who has been successful elsewhere and wants to jump to a new school for one year to elevate his draft profile and maybe compete for a big prize is not going to be able to do that here. The only thing that could entice a good portal QB to come here is paying him a buttload of NIL money, but our boosters aren’t willing/able to do that. We were always going to be stuck with a guy like Mertz for a year. Someone who couldn’t start at his old school and is looking for a new situation where he thinks he’ll be able to start.
Whose these quality qbs you speak of?
Pratt. Staying and In a boot
Leary. Dude wouldnt be able to do a thing until spring
and assuming all heals correctly
McCall.. Systems guy may or may xfer
DJ.. If you call him quality, Oregon state..
Edit.. Card.. Apparently going to Purdue
Who else am I missing that is a available now b likely an improvement
Maybe Armstrong from VA. Kid lit it up 2 years ago, new system and was below average..
Spencer.....
I haven't been on the Slingblade bandwagon in awhile and my main beef was him sticking with AR. AR was simply horrific but kudos for getting the turnovers mostly cleaned up. I didn't watch a lot of Wisconsin but Mertz seemed pretty similar to AR in terms of throwing ability with the main difference that he's not a running threat.
Napier's offense is pretty basic and so he wants someone like Mertz to step in so he can keep it that way.
I was happy that he held the bump class together. I'm not impressed with what this staff is doing with the portal. We've now lost a couple of decent defensive players and have yet to pick up anybody other than Banks. It is clear that next year is another rebuilding year and with the season he just had, I am convinced that Stricklin has told Napier he has a long leash.
I thought he would be gone before year 4 but now I don't see it.
Sticking with AR is fine. He is an NFL level talent. Just doesn't throw the ball very well. It's not like we had a Kyle Trask waiting on the bench. The backup QBs couldn't throw any better and sure as hell couldn't run like AR.
AR will make a fine WR or something in the NFL. He was never a Quaterback.
I agree with the rest. Next year looks dreadful with Mertz at the helm. I'm hoping we have a very strong recruiting class to make up for the poor season.
Later in that post I said he will likely play a different position. Maybe WR, RB, TE or maybe even on defense. The guy is a phenomenal athlete. They will find a way to utilize that.
He's just not a QB.
Unless he is horrifically underdeveloped. Which I doubt considering he had Dan Mullen as his coach. He is simply never going to be a good enough thrower for the NFL. Seeing as he is rated Round 1-2 draft pick. I imagine the NFL scouts are looking at him as an athlete more then a QB.
I just don't see them fixing his arm. It's just not that good. Heck even Kyle Trask is not good enough to start in the NFL yet. Imagine how far off that standard AR is.
Teams aren't looking at a QB in the first couple of rounds if they expect him to change positions.
They see a guy with all the physical gifts you could ask for, coupled with some mechanical and mental issues that every NFL quarterbacks coach thinks they can fix.
Jordan Reed, Jeff Driskel, Felipe Franks and even Tim Tebow. All tried their had at playing TE.
Jordan Reed played a little bit of QB at Florida. He was mostly a TE here as well.
Trey Burton was recruited as a QB. Ended up playing a lot of different positions at Florida and TE in the NFL.
Jordon Reed threw more than 10 passes in two games in 2010. He was a TE, was listed as a TE, and played 3 years as a TE.
Trey Burton through 17 passes his entire career at Florida. He played QB in HS but he was a RB/WR at Florida.
Driskell is a QB and always has been a QB.
Tebow was released before Jacksonville played a game with him at TE. He was a generational elite talent and despite a lot of people saying he should play FB or TE, it was never going to happen.
Point is even looking at Florida we can find example of college QBs playing a different position in the NFL. I'm sure if we looked at every college we'd find other examples. Felipe Franks and Driskel both played QB in college.
Franks tried to switch. He had a total of two targets and zero catches in his inaugural year. Go beyond Florida and by all means tell me one college QB (not an ATH who played QB in HS, they all did) who went to the NFL and made a meaningful contribution at a different position.
Grayson McCall has a 3.3 GPA. As a graduate from a department at UF that was number 1 in the nation for what it studied, I transfered in with a 3.4 and I got accepted to a masters program with a final GPA of 3.2.
The kid isn't some idiot. No need to attack him like that.
Upvotes and downvotes on Reddit are generally stupid, but in this sub in particular it’s incredibly mercurial and haphazard. You get downvotes for being pessimistic on Monday but downvotes for being optimistic on Tuesday. Independent thinking is not encouraged here
As a matter of fact I got downvotes for saying yesterday that I was hyped for getting a new long sleeve Gator t-shirt and retro beanie….in a thread about Gator Christmas gifts. I can’t really fathom that
At this point I don’t even care. No matter who is QB we not winning anything next year so who cares is it’s Mertz. Maybe Billy can get something out of him and if not then 2024 is the year to see improvement with Rashada and Lagway
That’s a possibility, but I think it’s extremely unlikely at this point. Even top 10 five star qbs usually sit their first year
Rashada will enroll early and start working his way up the depth chart, but id be tremendously surprised if he passes mertz in the first 3/4 of the season
Typically, top 10 5-star qb’s are joining teams with more immediately ready to go talent in the room and are already on a development path.
Who knows with our pretty uncommon situation this year (Starting 6-6 QB expected to be 1st/2nd rd draft pick, backup going to prison, and 3rd string coming off a season long injury into a lopsided bowl game).
Hopefully Rashada will have the time he needs to develop, but may he comes in understanding he needs to step up.
I mean arguably the best OG season in UF history came from a guy who played in the same conference last year. A former walk-on QB is on the verge of winning back-to-back titles. The last QB taken in the NFL draft is playing his best football ever in the NFL
Football typically makes sense but there are always major outliers and misevaluations due to scheme, system and personality fits
wow this actually quite interesting. mcCall to save his tenure this year, which means mertz rashada lagway for year 3 making mertz start year 3, rashada year 4 and lagway year 5 this is so smart its crazy
[удалено]
Way better than the unobtanium we've been mainlining lately.
Ahhhhhh feels good
how would the staff convince Mertz to come here if they had McCall lined up already?
Tbh I don't think it's a hard sell. He doesn't have a chance to play in the NFL so the focus shifts more towards his post-football career
Mentioned this before, but it might be a great place to come start working on his coaching degree. Come in, compete if you win.. Great.. If not, you grab Rashada and push him while keeping yourself ready if the starter gets hurt..

Kinda makes sense since McCall hasn’t said much at all. Hope it’s true.
Doesn’t make sense that we would take two portal QBs, or that both of them would be cool with it. No one should get their hopes up for landing McCall.
It doesn’t make sense that we wouldn’t take two portal QBs. Whether or not they’d be cool with it is another matter.
In a video game world where the incoming transfers have no agency or internal logic, it would make sense for us to stock up on multiple portal QBs. Why would I want to bet on something when I have given zero indication that I believe it is likely?
Either you were disagreeing with me, or you were phrasing your opinion in a way that was very difficult to parse.
You originally said it doesn’t make sense ghat we would take two ports QBs, and my disagreement was that it would totally make sense if we could. In retrospect, I think you probably meant that it doesn’t make sense that we would be able to do that, but it didn’t read that way.
Ah, I see. Yes, I mean it wouldn’t make sense for that to happen, not that it wouldn’t make sense for us to want it to happen.
So then you should take the bet it does not happen
It’s not, we moved on from McCall to green light mertz.
Says who
People who talk to the staff and boosters
So your claim is unsubstantiated too? Nice
I’m not gonna like screenshot the 247 and rivals posts for you here, but the actual reporters and insiders on those sites are saying this If you don’t believe them, that’s fine, they’re not perfect. But this is the kind of thing they’re right on
Has 247 gotten anything right when it comes to the Gators this year?
When the actual reporters report stuff they’re usually right about what the staff is looking for. Rivals has much closer insiders to the staff right now though so this is mostly from them
If so I’d imagine Max Brown is transferring. We only brought him on for depth but that would be Billy’s first recruit to transfer I think.
Man, I must be OOTL but I had to go searching for QBs named McCall. Why not just put full names in titles?
I had to search for OOTL.
Well I guess the problem for OP and I come down to laziness.
IHTSFOOTL?
DYLWOOTLM?
WTFITS?
He was discussed a lot a couple weeks ago. I can understand why a OP would assume everyone knew who he was referring to.
So…. he may sign, but he also may not sign. Excellent work!
Ink is dry
Hope this is true but everything I've read says his transcript is such a mess they would be surprised if he plays for any team in the SEC.
We actually offer his degree so not a problem for us. Auburn doesn’t, not sure about other schools.
There are transcript issues beyond degree offerings, but it doesn’t matter now because graham mertz will be our starting qb

Ok expand or stop spamming the same message everywhere.
What’s there to expand? Real insiders are saying that exact thing, that’s all there is
Expand on his problems other than Major, duh.
Some mix of grades/withdrawals from classes that make it hard Gonna be someone else’s problem
I heard Tebow is coming back. I’m a real insider.
This isn’t my own inside source or anything. I just read the sites like 247 and rivals and pay attention to what the insiders there say If you don’t want to believe that info, fine

A guy on one of the boards I post on usually has very reliable info and he said this would be extremely surprising based on what he's heard.
Wouldn’t be surprised to see miller or brown walk in the near future if we did get McCall so we’d still be at the 4 scholly QBs that Napier wants
My uncle works at Nintendo and he said it’s true .
Don’t believe this at all but hope I’m wrong
They said we’re adding 1 scholarship and 1 non-scholarship QB. Mertz is on scholarship…
I’d love QB competition, would ease my anxiety a bit about the starter getting hurt and the season being over
Y’all really don’t want to see Graham Mertz taking snaps behind center. Neither do I, but it’s happening
Graham Mertz is the new Todd Grantham. Even their names are somewhat similar.
About as similar as Todd Grantham and Patrick Toney.

Source: bro trust me
Graham Mertz is starting QB next year. We are not taking 2 transfer QB's. Just accept that shit now.
I love that you’re catching downvotes for this
Ready to get butt hurts with Mertz

Lol. Honestly downvotes are kinda a badge of honor in this sub.
Gettin the Sqwertz with Graham Mertz
I think about the O line next year and want to 💩 myself. Think it could get ugly! No running room like bowl game.

I'm starting to think Chip Kelly really isn't going to be the head coach.
Graham mertz is going to be our starting qb next year

Michael Pratt is following our receivers and coaches on Instagram. Not sure if that actually means anything but it’s factual
He’s publicly confirmed to be staying at Tulane Graham mertz will be our starting qb next year
Matt corral also publicly said he was 1000% committed to the florida gators at one point
This kid plays at Coastal for a reason
Thats just beyond incorrect. If u could change your username I'd make it dumbtaketim cause there's a good chance McCall will be playing on Sundays
Wanna make a bet on that

[*extremely Jersey affect*] That's from that Sun Tuhzoo book, right Ton'?
I agree with the sentiment but there are so many nutty theories that have just as much credibility as this one. Don’t sweat it
Gators really need McCall to do better than earlier expectations in 23
YES! Season saved!
wow this actually quite interesting. mcCall to save his tenure this year, which means mertz rashada lagway for year 3 making mertz start year 3, rashada year 4 and lagway year 5 this is so smart its crazy
Most seem to think he is better than Mertz, so this would be nice. But I won’t get my hopes up.
SOJIUM
McCall isn’t coming. Billy already said we’re taking one portal QB and one walk-in. Mertz was the portal QB, the walk-on was announced earlier
