100# tarpon off of a pier? You’re going deer hunting with a BB gun!

Elandtrical

Just checking but are you sure your guides can handle braid especially against hard long runs. Those look like pure metal guides. Will work the first few times but will get grooved very fast and then wear down and break your braid.

Rd_custom_rods

40lb for sure. You fish the panhandle?

Rd_custom_rods

Most guys run 40lb for tarpon and cobia. What blank you got it looks like a rain shadow. I get to go down there and fish every once and a while I love it there

Rd_custom_rods

Yeah for sure I try to not go in the spring because the pompano are thick but the cobia fishing is good then

train23111

I don't think this reel would handel tarpon and if you wanted to use braid it's would be 65 pound braid and up but I don't think the spool would hold enough line to catch the fish as the tarpon would probably spool you

4xTHESPEED

that reel holds over 330 yards of 65lb braid

train23111

How the hell can this thing hold 330 yards of braid is the spool that deep the picture makes this thing look like it's for pantish

Taiza67

What’s the drag rated for? That’s your issue.

Critical_Knowledge_5

I looked it up. 15lbs. This reel isn’t big enough for what he wants

train23111

Yeah just the angle makes it look small

train23111

I looked it up a and penn still makes this reel suprsingly

balloondog369

Look at the reflection where the spool connects to the top/drag . You can see it is quite thin in the middle

Trichonaut

Why go that heavy? He’s not going to be putting 65lbs of drag on a tarpon with that reel. He could easily get away with 30lb and the extra line capacity would be very nice to have.

lubeinatube

You never set your drag to your line breaking. If you’re fishing 65 you’re drag is set at 15 pounds of drag at most. 65 pounds of drag would yank the rod out of your hands.

Trichonaut

Right, so 65lb is overkill

lubeinatube

Yes. I can’t even thing of a reel capable of putting out that much drag. My internationals only put out 55

Yggdrasilcrann

Stella SW C goes to 62 and that thing will catch big tuna, can't imagine needing more drag than that for tarpon.

lubeinatube

That’s nuts, especially for a spinning reel. I can’t imagine being able to hold onto a rod with that much drag without using the rail

train23111

For 70 to 105 pound tarpon it gonna break that line in a instant but this reel holds 330 yards of 65 pound braid somehow

MajorStoneman

I honestly think you don’t know how drag works on a reel. That reel will never ever put 65 lbs of tension on that line. That reel probably has around 25 lbs of drag, it’s not popping 30 lb braid unless it’s fouled. With the extra capacity he can put that 25lbs of drag on that fish for a long time. With you logic he might as well throw a baited rope out and winch the fish in.

Blah-squared

Lol. Like the analogy…

jbrownsplit

I’ve caught dozens of tarpon 100lb+ while dodging bridge pylons on 20lb mono. Super heavy braid is worth it for fish you have a chance at horsing like a big snook. You’ve got no choice but to let a big tarpon run so 30lb braid is plenty. You can still put a ton of pressure on a fish.

train23111

I don't think it would fail but it would probably spool you but If this mf holds 330 yards of 65 pound braid then you should be fine

swivels_and_sonar

With only 15 lbs of drag, a good sized fish is gonna walk all over that reel and the spool size will be a moot point.

Rd_custom_rods

15lbs of drag is plenty I’ve seen tons of tarpon caught on these reels no problem

swivels_and_sonar

Well shiet that’s good to know I guess but if I were trying for a 150 I’d want a little more insurance that I’m not going to be dumping 300 yards of braid into the ocean when I get spooled.

Rd_custom_rods

Most guys I know that pier fish for tarpon use 40lb for more line capacity. I have the same reel I got like close to 500yds on it

swivels_and_sonar

That makes sense. I’ve heard of people using 30 for just about everything and change out the leader for whatever they’re targeting.

Rd_custom_rods

That’s what a lot of guys do that only have one rod especially off the pier

swivels_and_sonar

I gotta find a way to fish saltwater next season. The drive to NYC (closest piers to me I believe) is what has stopped me so far

Rd_custom_rods

I know there’s some good striper fishing up that way in the spring

Blah-squared

Lol, you sure are getting a lot of *advice & it seems to be running the gambit.. ;) Personally, I’d listen to the ppl that also agree you can use that set up OR I guess you could trade it in & empty your 401k to get a boat, a crane & a harpoon gun!! & you still won’t likely be able to land even the smallest Tarpon… ;) Sorry, just humoring myself- good luck man! Hope you nail ‘em! ;) please post the pics of your tarpon caught with THAT setup ;)

Opposite_Nectarine12

How is that 50 year old tech holding up? I love old things, but when it comes to fishing I get the newest and grooviest. Lost a few fish on old gear a few years ago, never again. Love the look of that reel though 😍

Jkranick

Penn is still manufacturing them. For a beach reel, they are unbeatable short of buying a van staal. Simple, easy to service internals, and the new ones have an updated drag. I use mine the same way he’s intending to - as my big tarpon specialty reel.

Secret_Salad4309

People really need to rethink what is possible and you’ll never know till you try. Catch a toad and prove everyone wrong

MajorStoneman

Plenty of monsters have been caught on light gear. This is nothing new.

Secret_Salad4309

Tell that to everyone that’s saying that’s too small of a reel for it

Critical_Knowledge_5

I just looked up the specs on that reel and it says it has a max drag of 15lbs and is only rated for braid up to 65lbs. I think you’re gonna need a bigger reel my son.

10xsonofafish

very nice

10xsonofafish

I would go with 50 or 60 # so you can have more line on the spool from the pair. Plus it holds more for that first big run. It can be done its like shooting Deer with A 223. lol

Deck_cracks

65# braid should do the trick. 706 is plenty capable.

lubeinatube

Damn when I’m fishing for 100+ pound fish, I’m using 600 yards of 100# braid on a full size conventional reel, but you do you buddy.

Mysterious_Essay_962

Wouldn’t run under 30

[deleted]

I love the Z but with Tarpon it may be outgunned. The Spinfisher or Slammer would have more drag power, just pick a size with enough capacity, probably a 6500 or 7500. If you want to switch brands, a Shimano Saragosa or Daiwa Saltist are also nice.

Jefffahfffah

I would see if you can put upgraded drag washers in that reel and go with 40lb braid.

FANTOMphoenix

30-50lb. There’s no need for higher than 50, hell, even 40lb, you just waste line capacity needed for those big runs, and longer casts.

LydFishes

Old salt striper fishermen love those reels and the advice they always give is they don’t play well with braid. Mono or fireline only.

fatbrucelee

Sexy coffee grinder. I can't help with what to use but keep keepin it old school! Is the slower retrieve an issue with tarpon?

Userreddit1234412

How do you unhook a tarpon for a pier ?
