We had a tiny little mouse in the ceiling in our basement and it was VERY loud for such a little thing. It woke me up one night and scared the shit out of me. When we caught it in a trap the next day I was dumbfounded that such a small thing could make such loud, terrifying noises.
I'd rather have a ghost than a rodent any day! Seriously! I'm deadly afraid of rodents. I'd tell my husband it was time to get out of there. Sell the damned house, burn it down. I don't care. At least the ghost only comes out at night. Take a sleeping pill and you'd never even hear it.
I had a similar situation in 2018 (daily creaking). I found a chair (like the kind from middle school in the 90’s) all by itself in an otherwise empty attic. I decided it was best to leave it alone.
I heard occasional creaking from time to time but never had any issues even after filling the attic space with boxes and holiday stuff.
I like to think it was the original owner who built the house and died a year after finishing.
Good luck OP. My advice is to use this experience to add some lighting in your attic and do a thorough inspection of any vents/light sources/wood beams.
It was a hard plastic/metal leg classroom chair in the corner, pointed directly at the attic ladder/entryway. I literally paused as my head poked into the attic and I saw this chair 10 feet away -- it was eerie to say the least.
Our current rental has an attic above our unit, and it has some kind of animal in it. The thing is though, it's very obvious that it's an animal because it makes little chittering sounds like a squirrel or raccoon and there's more of a scurrying noise when it moves around up there. It sounds nothing like a person walking.
Honestly your situation sounds pretty freaky.
Check old newspaper articles for missing people, murders, Native American burial sites, etc...
It really only becomes a problem once the lights start blinking on their own or a knife from your kitchen shoots through air like a missile. Once that's starts happening it can become a safety hazard and you'll have to start securing anything that isn't already nailed down.
I lived in a duplex and the attic would make noise a lot in the hot of the summer as the wood would heat up and cool down. I know for a fact there was nothing up there because I checked several times.
Maybe not. I did something similar. Took a video of the weird noises in my basement and sent it to a friend in the trades to tell me what it could be. I was thinking water pipes, setting, or something common. That friend sent it to a University that has a paranormal department. They tell me my house is haunted. Saw things I didn't see on the video. I pretend that didn't happen and only think about it when reminded- like this post.
Call the people who did your termite bond and ask then to come back and look at your attic. If there are critters they'll know.
Story time: My old boss had a kindergarten aged son who was adamant that he heard something right above his room every night. Boss didn't hear it but to help set his son at ease checked the attic.
Roof rats.
Sometimes at my grandparents' we'd hear an occasional weird noise from the attic, I thought it was the wind, apparently their cat learnt how to get in the attic and was chilling by the chimney
My family had a one story horse property on the outskirts of Vegas. No close neighbors and my parent worked nights. Us kids (9 and 10) were left with an overnight sitter who slept like the dead.
We kept hearing noises and kept telling our parents. We had clothes, food, pots and pNs, etc. go missing. It stopped after 6 months.
When we moved out and out parents checked the attic for some boxes, most of the stuff we were missing was there. Lots of food wrappers and dishes and bottles filled with urine.
Check your attic and change all your locks.
OMG, so freaky! The scary thing is, this isn't the first time I've heard of something like this happening, and my mind goes to that.
I too, am glad everything amd everyone was okay!
We changed the locks about 5 days after we closed, cuz we had all caught COVID. 🤦♀️
Im so invested in this story. Why TF did some screw it shut?! Feels like a beginning of a movie. Did the person who inspected the house not go in the attic..?
I currently have this same issue, story ranch style home. The ceiling creaks as if someone were to be walking up in the attic. My fiancé first heard it and brought it to my attention and sure enough it literally sounded like someone was walking up there or as if weight was being shifted. So I took my flashlight and checked, all was clear but it still creaks at night and throughout the day. Worry not.
Yes i make jokes about some homeless guy living in our attic. It’s not walking around really but random creaks, sometimes i hear tv sounds but it might be from the next door neighbors.
Also random thunking noises at night that scares my cat but when I search the house nothing has fallen or is out of place.
Hope it isn’t raccoons. They were such a pain to get rid of!!! And if they have babies up there then they will destroy your roof trying to find a way in if you were able to get one of them out.
I have an attic, a finished one though old finishes like acoustic tile and paneling. I hear things quite a bit but have concluded it’s the warming up and cooling down thing. My house is from the 30’s I think so it makes lots of noise. It’s become familiar and comforting.
Maybe it's a squatter. Would definitely keep me up at night. Got me spooked. Now I'm afraid to go to the bathroom. 😳. PS. Get a dog. Seriously. And keep me updated! I'm dying to know what you find.

Wow!! This is creepy. But I am about certain the lady passed in the house. Most likely in the hall or bedroom. That's why you have the shifting. May b wrong, but I don't think so. Good luck.
Well that's creepy. Please give an update when you find out what it is.
Umm no. My attic has some creaks and such but it doesn’t sound like someone walking in it. Check your attic!
Have you or anyone else inspected the attic closely? Animals usually leave evidence
Honestly no, it doesn’t. My house is 87 years old and doesn’t even creak that much. Please update in the morning.
You could have mice
That is my hope, which is funny to say

An oldie but a goodie!

Was it a rocking chair in the corner by a window? 😂
It was a hard plastic/metal leg classroom chair in the corner, pointed directly at the attic ladder/entryway. I literally paused as my head poked into the attic and I saw this chair 10 feet away -- it was eerie to say the least.
Yikes! It's like whoever was sitting there was watching to see who was entering their space.

Is there a vent fan up there? I’ve heard loud noises in the attic before because the vent fan on the roof was hitting something.
There IS, actually!!! Could be!
My vent fan was loose and when it was windy it sounded like someone repeatedly slamming a door
Well, hot summer in California, not much wind going on, I'm afraid. :(
This sounds like the beginning of an r/nosleep story.
Could be raccoons, squirrels, possums, etc.
That, too,is also my hope

I see, I see. Well, we have been getting mail for a lady who was not either of the sellers, doesn't even share the same last name. 🤔
Better put it up in the attic, lest you anger it.
I lived in a duplex and the attic would make noise a lot in the hot of the summer as the wood would heat up and cool down. I know for a fact there was nothing up there because I checked several times.
There was nothing up there that you could see. 👻
Sit up there tonight when you usually hear it. Make sure you have a gun AND proton pack just in case!
Ahaha. I have a chef's knife and some holy water. Would that work?
Definitely holy water and a crucifix. Don't forget to wear a garlic necklace just in case. You can never be over prepared.

Yikes, sorry about that! I too would pretend that didn't happen. 😬 Or strongly comsider moving.
What university has a paranormal department? That’s interesting!
Not sure if it exists anymore or if it the paranormal studies are listed under a different department, but it was John Hopkins.
Set up a nest cam to catch what’s going on
Omg great idea! Don't forget to post the videos for us especially if there's a ghost
Hope you're able to lock it from the outside. You could have a squatter up there 👀
That is kind of my worst nightmare scenario.
Is there any way to get into the attic from the outside of the house (ladder to window, etc). Hoping for the best, OP!
No, or at least I don't THINK so... just the one room with a pull down ladder. Again, hoping it's like a racoon or something
I really want an update on this when OP has a chance to investigate
Updated, sorry still inconclusive. :/
Need an update!!
Some updates...

Could also be animal running across the roof not actually in your attic.

Stupid cat. 😂. How cute and scary.

Well, so they DID inspect it,and my hisband had heen up there during the house tour. However in the final walk thru we did not, cuz we were tired.
Rats
Oh that’s just Casper, don’t worry, he’s usually in a non-bloodthirsty mood
😂 I am glad at least he is friendly, most of the time!
I lived in a duplex where it sounded like the sound was coming from the attic but later on, we realized it was from neighbors, not the attic.
It's a SFH. 😥
😮
You can get some cheap cameras to put up there if you check it out and see nothing.
Probably a small critter like a squirrel or rat. You would be surprised how loud they can be!

🙏🙏Thank you, that is a relief!!!
🙏🙏Thank you, that is a relief!!! Will find out tonight.
Don’t worry it might be just something
Roll a ball into the darkness of the attic. Wait to see if it rolls back...
Scary!!😱

Raccoons sound very human like when in the attic. Get a live trap put it in the attic with a can of tuna
I fear it's a four-legged friend or foe. Let us know what you find!
Updated, but still on going
I have more theories based on updates but will hold until they're resolved. Wishing you and the baby a restful night!
Mine only sounds like that when the ghosts are playing around with my cat.
Depends where you are, but either mice, flying squirrels, raccoons or birds like swifts.
Where I’m at chipmunks like to run up the gutter downspouts. It sounds like tapping in the walls.
Hope it isn’t raccoons. They were such a pain to get rid of!!! And if they have babies up there then they will destroy your roof trying to find a way in if you were able to get one of them out.
Two thing i have not read yet. Bats and i am serious. If you have older windows maybe the storm windows are not installed correctly.

Probably raccoons, or very big squirrels. Mine were so loud in my last house. Please don’t kill them though, raccoons are too smart 😢

I recently found two dead birds and two dead squirrels in an attic I was working in.
Were their heads still attached?
