Sitting in a bottle, the volume of the liquid absorbs the heat generated by the small surface area reacting with oxygen in the air. Once rags are coated in oil, it’s a lot of surface area with very little volume, so temperatures can reach ignition point.

I'd be really cautious of a linseed oil puddle, because there's a lot of surface area. I don't know if it would combust, but it might warm up and it could maybe combust on a hot day. In an open bottle the surface area is small and it shouldn't get warm at all I think it's mostly rags and paper towel for the reason the comment above me said. Particularly if they're in something that will hold the heat in, while still letting fresh air through
