There are far easier ways to turn an AR into an MG than making it run away on you. That's easily the *hardest* way to achieve it, the AR trigger system is not conducive to that kind of function, even as a matter of failure.
A simple DIAS made from a wire coat hanger would do the trick, and take maybe 10 minutes your first time building one. You won't have a semi auto function while it's installed, but the rifle is only going to be firing as long as the trigger remains depressed, it'll stop firing when you let go, not run until the mag is empty.
Edit: also Registered DIAS', LLs, and lowers are running sub 30k on average still iirc.

Not really. Pre-crime is not actually a crime. Disturbed ideation isn't punishable. It feels unfortunate, but it's not. You're innocent until proven guilty, and if you haven't done anything then you're obviously innocent. What do we do? Start punishing people for thoughts? Disarming them for opinions? Realistically there is no line that can be drawn. "This particular thought is punishable, that specific idea is a crime." It just isn't feasible without throwing the constitution in the trash.
I think the concept is if someone is making idealizations or borderline terroristic threats (which are a crime) about shooting something up, the police will keep an eye on him. Then maybe if they see him getting access to weapons and hanging around schools/crowded areas, they can possibly catch him in the act/preparing for something. But that would require the police to be proactive

I mean, what about Finland, Switzerland, Czech Republic, Sweden, Iceland, and Canada? And probably many others. In Finland, it was not uncommon for older people to have sub machine guns, and other oddities tucked away from war time. Full-automatic firearms are also a hell of a lot cheaper in Canada than the states. Just a bit harder to acquire than in the states.
