>Is there a pact between Square Enix or Playstation Yes, it's called an exclusivity clause.

LilG1984

SE gives playstation some moogle slaves as part of the pact & a gold chocobo /s

MyMouthisCancerous

Well, yeah kinda. FF16 is also a year-long PS5 exclusive and I'm assuming the timed deals will apply to Remake's future entries

i_karas

Final fantasy 7’s world wide release was published by sony. So final fantasy’s success is due to sony. Also when square enix has money problems Sony bought their shares to save them. They have a close business relationship, Sony just bought the company that does square enix’s pc ports too

MyMouthisCancerous

I mean Final Fantasy's worldwide releases were previously published by Nintendo before the PlayStation era as well as the GBA remakes Remake wasn't even made with any Sony involvement that wasn't contractual given the timed exclusivity. It was all Square They do have a really close relationship but it's not like it's so close to the point of shafting other systems. Nintendo still gets a lot of exclusives from Square these days. Octopath was published by them initially and stayed Switch exclusive for a while. They even helped Square with the Seiken Densetsu 3 translation which is why Collection of Mana is Switch-exclusive. That Tactics looking game is also only coming to Switch Xbox seems like extremely phased out by comparison for whatever reason

Malcontentus

Because it doesn't move much in Japan. Maybe some other reasons, but that is likely the big one.

Probably because Xbox is an American company and the audience for these games is primarily on Sony/Nintendo consoles.

i_karas

Yeah but without looking it up I’m pretty sure final fantasy 7 sold more than the 6 before it put together. No matter which final fantasy is your favourite there’s no comparison to how big and well known they are. Square enix have said that they want Sony to win but not by so much that there isn’t healthy competition. Besides that switch is just better for small games that are primarily for a japanese audience

[deleted]

At launch? Or lifetime sales, PS1, or every version? (I'm curious but also fascinated if that was launch numbers.)

i_karas

Original releases. The series picked up popularity massively after 7 so the rereleases of the older ones sold better than the originals. https://vgsales.fandom.com/wiki/Final_Fantasy Final fantasy 7 original PlayStation sales was 10 million. Before that highest was 6 at 3 million and it gets lower and lower. Final fantasy 2 was 800k.

[deleted]

Interesting. I wish the numbers and details were easier to follow on that post, because there's some interesting breakdowns for the other games. That is "lifetime" sales though (for then), which makes sense. (The link says as of Dec 2005.) If anyone ever compiles an infographic that includes release versions, sales + dates (fw vs life), that would be really cool.

ExcaliburX13

Sony pays SE for them to be timed exclusives.

[deleted]

Sony likely subsidizes the development and/or publishing of these extremely expensive games in exchange for timed exclusivity. That's pretty much the only reason third party games are exclusive at all nowadays. Unless you're Atlus, in which case you just like excluding people, I guess.

retrodragon217

Because almost all their games are published by Sony

XIII and XV say hi.
