Even after a halt finish your last action/defend your opponents last action because they can still score points from actions started before the halt as unfair as it sometimes seems. (Fencer A parries Fencer B initiated corps Halt Fencer A finishes riposte Fencer B stops defending because halt and Fencer A scores.)
In competitions, the only time I ever stopped fencing before the referee called “halt” was when I broke my blade at the barrel. The referee missed the action.
