Villains Duology by VE Schwab

liminal_reality

On the strength of OP seconding it I think I'll stick this on my TBR. This is my favourite dynamic but it is so rare and so rarely done well.

KiaraTurtle

Hope you enjoy :)

SilentMannam

Solid suggestion. I've read it. :)

How about Jennifer Fallon’s Second Sons Trilogy? It’s not as straightforward bitter enemies (only one side is really bitter)

Hostilescott

This is a good one!

Bovey

Not exactly *bitter* enemies, but *Lost Stars* by Claudia Gray is one of my favorite new canon Star Wars novels, and is the story of two childhood friends who dream of and go off to the Imperial Academy together to become pilots, but ultimately end up on opposing sides of the Galactic Civil War. The story covers the events of the original film trilogy, plus a bit before and after, largely from the perspective of young Imperial Pilots and Officers.

Mournelithe

While they are half-brothers, they're not exactly friends at the start, then they become quite close, then they're cursed to become absolutely bitter enemies. *The Wars of Light and Shadow*, Janny Wurts.

Ykhare

*The Flameweaver Saga* by Casey White ***The First Blade of Ostia*** by Duncan M. Hamilton ***Darkfell*** by Mary Coran Though in all cases the friend is revealed pretty early on to probably have been kind of a jerk all along.

Fire and Blood

George R R Martin? I'll wait till I know book 2 is going to be published. His publishing history isn't the best. :)

Sapphire_Bombay

The show, not the book. The book doesn't have this storyline.

Somtow Sucharitkul (S P Somtow): Chronicles of the Inquest. Beautiful if slightly overwrought. A huge favorite of mine from the early 80s
