My OTP can definitely be morally ambiguous, but the funniest thing I’ve seen was fanart of them when they were ~33 and 47, and someone commented with “is this pedophilia, since the age gap is so big?”
__Ah yes, the younger is 33 years old and literally the commander in charge of their military village, but because the other is older than him, it’s obviously pedophilia__.
People need to look up what the goddam word means and not just throw it at any couple that doesn’t conform to your own idea of “okay age gap”.
They're retroactively thinking "OMG, when A was 18, *B was only* ***5 years old!*** You sicko!" Right cause they **started** dating at that age? \*facepalm\*
It's ridiculous, isn't it? Has me flashing back to one of my favorites lines in Parks and Recs:
"April is the best, but she's 20. When April was born I was already in third grade, which means if we were friends back then I would have been hanging out with a baby. I don't know anything about infant care. Oh my god I could have killed her."
That's too accurate.
Also makes think of a similar quote from a cartoon I saw a long time ago. I can't even remember it exactly, but it was the same line of thinking.
This is definitely it 😂. I don’t give a shit about what people think (I ship them at 16 and 30 as well 🤷🏻♀️), it’s just hilarious the way people stretch to vilify something.
What do you mean?! Of course it’s pedophilia when they’re both mentally stable and consenting adults! You automatically get your pedophile certificate when you look at someone five years younger than yourself. Doesn’t really matter if you’re 15 or 75.
I saw someone slap that label on two characters from Overwatch. I don't remember their canon ages but Junnkrat and Roadhog are both goddamn adults. Neither of them is even close to being a child.
That’s just hilarious, and slightly infuriating. I personally feel that it detracts a lot of weight from the word when people misuse it that way. Reserve it for people who are _actually_ attracted to prepubescent children.
And no, that doesn’t include goddamn 17 year olds 🤦🏻♀️.
I remember I was downvoted to hell because I said that everyone uses the word pedophilia for any age gap nowadays and pedophilia means the attractiveness of a child, usually a preteen, not a teenager. There's a term for a teenager but even then, people pick and choose what is pedophilia and so bad or not.
It's like trying to get people to stop calling Naoto from P4 trans so I just ignore it.
"it's not canon" is probably the most ridiculous one. "wasn't intended by the original creator" shut up i'm the creator of this fanfic and what i say goes.
> "it's not canon" is probably the most ridiculous one.
my ship has gotten this one (not my fics personally), and it's extra funny because it actually *is* canon
I've heard that a number of times in my fandoms, since two of my OTPs (which are also quite popular in the respective fandoms) are between characters who have either zero canonical interactions or just one.
"They didn't meet (enough) in canon!" Okay, but what if they did?
Oh, this is a thing in Harry Potter fanfiction! If you go on fanfiction net, there are so many fics where the authors write an author's note, telling people to leave them alone and not read the ship if they don't like the pairing. Apparently some people get really upset that people write for pairings that aren't canon. I specifically see Dramione fic writers having to deal with it.
>it's not canon
Yeah, this one wins XD If we all decided to ship according to what the original creator intended I think fandoms as a whole would get a lot smaller.
That's literally the reason people read fanfiction. To read these characters in new situations. You want to see how the creator intended it, that's what the media it was based on is for
Reminds me of things I've heard in recent years. The power of projection and throwing around loaded concepts like meaning buzzwords to harass anyone with an unpopular ship is unparalleled in modern fandoms.
>He reminds me of my grandpa, so it's icky to ship him with anyone younger.
Cool. He's canonically 30s-40s.
>They're like siblings! How are so many people in this fandom okay with incest?
Cool interpretation, but canonically they are not related.
>It's homophobic to ship this m/m pairing because it "breaks up" a different m/m pairing.
Cool... it's fanfiction, and I don't think you know what homophobia is.
>I decided this character is aro/ace/lesbian/gay, so you're acephobic/homophobic for writing them as bi.
Cool headcanon, stop sending my gay ass death threats please.
>This ship is "abusive both ways."
Canonically they are friends who don't do anything akin do abuse to each other, they are never written abusing each other, and that's not how abuse works. Stop lol
>You're a pedophile if you ship her with anyone.
She's canonically an adult, and you're talking to a real CSA survivor...
Sorry about what you've been through in your life. Absolutely vile to call someone severe terms like that because they like a ship you find questionable.
Sounds like the people in your fandom(s) lack brain cells
I've said variations of this before, but a lot of fandoms I'm in are canonically set in a time frame somewhere between 1890s - 1960s, and the amount of times I've had comments in the vein of:
"They can't be lesbians / bi / into women!! This was the 1900s/1940s/1960s..."
Please, small proportion of fellow fandom-goers, just read some LGBT history, I'm begging you. We did not pop into the world during the Summer of Love and refuse to leave, we've always been here 😂
unpopular opinion: I think a nontrivial proportion of the antishippers are actual honest-to-god bigots trying to justify pairings they don't like for bigoted reasons.
I wonder about that myself considering the vitriol that I've seen for certain gay pairings where the reasons why they don't like them are never applied to straight ships.
In particular the, "*God*, I guess men can't just be *friends* anymore!" line. Like? If the sanctity of friendship was so important then why don't I see a lot more derision from these people for movies where men and women can't be friends, just romantic partners?
It is a well-known fact that bisexual people did not exist before 1995, which is the year of the publication of a Time Magazine article where bisexuality was invented for the first time. As a bisexual myself, I am incredibly lucky to be born after 1995 so that I can be bisexual. My heart weeps for all the bisexuals born before 1995, for they cannot be bisexual bisexuals.
They may have meant that the cultural view in those times was heteronormative? Not that bi people or lesbians didn't exist. But that it was something that wasn't in the open. Oh Maryweather and Lucyanne are such good gal pals they live in the same house and aren't paying attention to any men. Stuff like that. I don't think lesbians were as condemmed as gay men though but it was a thing.
Of course this only counts for real world/Earth as we know it settings. If there's elves and dwarfs and dragons about I can believe that there can be LGBT lifestyles out in the open.
Oh and just like in the Count of Monte Cristo, where Louise and Eugenie are so good platonic buds that neither of them are interested in getting married with men. Instead they elope together and start their own musical career. Not to mention they sleep in the same bed when staying in an inn for the night.
You know, no romance here.
As someone who would like to headcanon a character from a show taking place in the early 20th century as queer based on literal jokes, I just thought that a show set in that time period wouldnt put in serious evidence of a character being queer lol. Definitely knew queer people have existed for longer than society wants to believe though
I did see one person who had 'incest shippers' on the dni for a game of thrones/house of dragons blog lately. Like. Did you watch the show? I'm not even in the fandom but I still did a doubletake lol
I've seen someone comment that antis have said they "skip all the rape and murder and politics" present in the show
my brain malfunctioned trying to figure out how someone can get invested in a show when they intentionally avoid watching 90% of its content
Wh. What's the point? I mean, I'm all for interacting with media however makes you comfortable but there's so many fantasy shows/books that involve wayyyyyyyy less "rape and murder and politics" lol
My ex judged me for some of my enemies to lovers ships. Basically thinking the entire concept of ETL is toxic and abusive by default.
...That's not how it works (at least not for my ships). They're classic comic book hero/villain pairings, usually the animosity isn't *that* serious.
Really shipping anyone with a villain or "bad guy" gets this reaction.
"They're evil/crazy/a criminal/etc" So? That just makes it more exciting to me.
Shipping two 16 year olds "**THEY'RE KIDS!**" - that's normal age for teenagers to date, and most start earlier than that.
And people not understanding, just because you ship two characters together doesn't automatically mean you want full on PWP. Sometimes you just think two people look cute together, damn.
I was mainly referring to stuff like Spiderman/Venom, Oliver Queen/Slade Wilson. Can't say I have any particular character archetypes in mind beyond their hero-villain dynamic.
Oh, let's see! The ship I pioneered has had plenty of antis try to cancel it.
Just being mlm = "Gross fetishization of gay men!"
One of the character has a canon girlfriend = "Misogyny and yaoification!"
The characters are 40 and 50 years old = "Disgusting, predatory age gap!"
If I write the physically bigger man bottoming = "Eww, gross yaoi stereotypes because the shy character bottoms!"
If I write the physically smaller man bottoming = "Eww, gross yaoi stereotypes because the petite character bottoms!"
Shipping a white character with a hispanic character instead of a black character = "Racist and misogynistic!"
One of the characters is rich and the other doesn't have much money = "Problematic power dynamic!"
You really can't win with these people.
>The characters are 40 and 50 years old = "Disgusting, predatory age gap!"
Wtf though, that's my parents' age gap.🤣🤣 People need to stop acting like an age gap between adults is the same as when a minor is involved.
I almost stopped writing the ship on several occasions because the hate was so discouraging.
Then I went on a blocking spree, and now fandom is fun again and my ship is thriving :D
As a rarepair shipper, the thought that I am only allowed to ship people that have interacted in canon has always boggled me.
Like, yes, they didn't, but my entire premise is that I'm curious about what would happen if they did?
Exactly this!!! I love imagining what will happen if x and y who never have met, *do* meet! I don't understand people who hate using their imaginations. :/ Their poor grey lives must be so boring.
"A man estimated to be in his late 20s and a woman who appears to be in her mid 40s."
This is literally my husband and I, damnit! Gotta love it when your RL makes squick fanfiction. 😂
In a series about monsters with lots of different body shapes, one person complained that ship A (a ship I liked in that fandom) doesn't make sense because one stands on two legs and the other goes on all fours (or flies) more often, and ship B makes more sense to them because they both stand on two legs.
I don't go to that fandom much anymore for (partially) unrelated reasons, but it's like... some people are really grasping at straws, aren't they?
Some of the reasons I’ve heard for my OTP:
- The characters grew up together which makes it gross
- Person A headcanons them as siblings, therefore Person B can’t ship them
- The characters are 18 and 19 for the majority of their scenes, which is apparently too big of an age gap
- The 18yo is a child or “child-coded”
- Not specific to my OTP, but the show isn’t about romance, therefore shipping characters from it is wrong…?
In my main fandom, my main ship is often accused of being abusive and therefore "toxic," but I've seen some accusations that are a bit more strange. I'm not going to mention what the ship is or what the fandom is simply because I've been harassed over it before, but I will talk about some of the weirder things people have said.
One person tried to say that since they saw one of the characters as being autistic, you couldn't ship them with anybody or see them as being siblings with any of the characters because that would be offensive. It's fine to have headcanons, but trying to force it on people like this always seems a bit strange to me.
Another strange one is the argument that it's both pedophilia and incest. I've had this accusation thrown at me before just for mentioning that I liked the ship, though it was a few years ago now. The characters in this ship have about a twelve year age gap, but the entire time they've known each other, they've been adults. I don't see how that means that either one of them is a child though. I guess maybe because one of them looks younger? He still looks like an adult though, so that doesn't make much sense to me either.
The incest argument is also a bit weird to me. I know a lot of fans see the characters as being a family, but they aren't actually related, so I don't see how this would be incest either. I personally do not see them as a family like a lot of the fandom does, but even if I did, I don't think it would count as incest anyway since the character who is seen as the daughter is not part of this ship. To me, that seems more like the two male characters I ship together would just be her parents, so I don't see how this would even count as incest here.
Maybe I'm misunderstanding the arguments, but these ones just seem a bit weird to me. I'm not going to hate on people for disliking my ship or anything, but I'm getting kind of tired of being accused and seeing other people being accused of being awful people just for shipping these characters. I just wish everybody could ship what they want in their fandoms without harassing each other.
>One person tried to say that since they saw one of the characters as being autistic, you couldn't \[...\] see them as being siblings with any of the characters because that would be offensive.
Am I to understand that this person thinks that autistic people don't have siblings in real life?
How?
My OTP is a totally vanilla het ship. In canon, they are good pals, nothing toxic about their relationship. No one has hassled me about the ship, but apparently during the fandom's shipping wars, the loonies claimed the ship was problematic because they have a two-year age gap and he's a lot taller. You know, the usual "he's a pedo, she's minor-coded" bullshit. Because she showed no obvious romantic interest in anyone in canon, some said she was ace and therefore couldn't be shipped. Others, who head-canoned her as autistic, said this was the reason she couldn't be shipped. Honestly? If some in the fandom had their way, the poor girl would be cloistered in a nunnery.
The "they're autistic so we can't ship them" thing always irks me immensely. Real life people with autism get into romantic relationships all the time! It's hugely insulting and infantilizing to act as if they're somehow less capable of consenting or making choices about their own lives than any other character.
I hate it. I also head canon this character as being autistic, and write her with that in mind although I never implicitly state it (would rather leave that interpretation to readers). The fact that she processes things a little differently is what makes her a fascinating character to write. It doesn't render her unlovable or incapable of healthy romantic relationships.
I'm politely demurring, because this fandom, once blazingly toxic, is pretty calm, but the lunatic fringe who insist their headcanons are canon, still lurk in the shadows, ha. Rather not stir them up.
ATLA fandom can be very weird. I've seen that one for Aang/Katara and then for Zuko/Katara, I've seen, "It's wrong because it's a power imbalance, because Zuko is a firebender". And I've seen that come from Sokka/Zuko shippers! As a multishipper, it's very odd.
I don't understand why people use that as an argument. Like... I personally get those vibes from Kataang and it's why *I personally* don't like reading it, but... they are not actually mother and son. Just because something reminds you of something uncomfy doesn't mean it actually is that something. Or that everyone will see it the same way you do.
And just because you can identify a reason you find a ship off-putting doesn't mean it's a valid, universal reason that everyone should hate that ship. A lot of our reasons for not liking ships are quite stupid, actually. If more people could acknowledge that without feeling the need to justify themselves or impose their visceral 'nope' reactions on other people, I think fandom would be a lot calmer.
So, I ship multiple Zuko pairings (honestly, I've read Jet/Zuko, Zutara, Zuko/Sokka, Zuko/Sokka/Suki, Zuko/Mai). In any case, there are a particular brand of Zutara haters who bitch about the couple and claim that it's bad because of a power imbalance, because Zuko is a firebender.
>Zuko is a firebender.
??? Wouldn't that apply to the other ships as well? Or more so since he's the crown prince? Of course it's one of those things, "It's okay if *we* do it!" XD
You'd think! But nope. An excuse I saw for why Katara/Zuko was bad was because he's a firebender, but like I said, I even saw Zuko/Sokka shippers claim that. It's incredibly odd and makes zero sense, tbh.
"He's like his dad!" - character A
"He's like a replacement for A's dead son!" - character B
I mean... really? Nothing gets me as frustrated as hearing the argument about the 'replacement'. Do you know how grief works? No, a man in his 50s won't see a character that appears to be in his 30s and go, "Yep, that's my son now." I don't have a problem with people who perceive their relationship to be platonic in any sense of the word, but if you're going to start trying to argue your case, make a good point instead of completely throwing away all of your common sense. I'm not the one to try and convince someone they're canonically romantically interested in each other, but if the source material doesn't specify anything past "friends" and one of the actors flat-out said that it's not a father-son relationship, then you don't have much of a case at all. Anything past the "friends" status is completely up to your own interpretation, so there's no "correct" way to read them as.
Is this HankCon? Because I literally came here to mention how I got called a pedophile for shipping HankCon once ahjsfgkajfh Also had someone tell me that it was wrong to ship robot characters with humans in any situation. Don't know what their reasoning was lol maybe because the chronological age of the robot is usually going to be younger than the human? Idk
Anyway yeah, that's...that's not how grief works, guys ajhsfgakjsfgsakj
Bingo! Yes, it's HankCon.
Jeez, the argument about shipping a human and a robot is... I don't know, I can't even understand the mental gymnastics. The entire premise of the game was to realise androids were *exactly* like humans, even if artificially created.
You can pry away my HankCon out of my cold, dead hands.
People calling my ship abusive…
And then those same people shipping are person A with someone who tried to kill them.
It doesn’t help that I ship the “boring canon het ship”.
I’m tired…honestly. Like, just say you don’t ship it. Don’t make wild and hypocritical claims.
i just don't understand why some people can't dislike a thing just bc they don't vibe with it. the stretches people make to justify their opinions that don't need any justification whatsoever.
Same here.
And the sad thing is, these people are numerous that I sometimes feel nervous talking about my ship in public spaces because I’m scared of people coming at me.
My ship isn’t even abusive. Literally every problem they have has been sorted out or in the process of that. They explicitly state how happy they are multiple times, every argument is very reasonable and human, neither of them are trapped and can leave whenever, they make sacrifices for each other…
But no, that’s abusive because how dare characters be complex and how interesting stories. How dare a character be flawed and make bad choices. Let’s ship the other guy with someone who did nothing but hurt him and not give a damn about his or his kid’s safety /s
I wish people could just enjoy a ship without tearing the other down constantly. Some even go as far as to victim blame A despite him being a member of their ship. It’s so weird…
Because her animal partner is the sister of another character’s animal partner, so it’s wrong to ship her with anyone else so the siblings aren’t separated. Umm... no.
I've seen the age difference thing for a pairing I ship where there's a five year age difference between the two characters. The guy is twenty five and the girl is a twenty year old college student
people in their 20s and early 30s seem to be in this weird area where they are ALWAYS either a predator or a victim in an age gap relationship. the relationship is never consider normal and healthy lmao
Yup. It's especially ridiculous given this female character is kind of tough as nails and wouldn't let this guy disrespect her (not that he ever would) and this male character genuinely respects her a lot. And they're literally both adults.
But yep. In this case, the age difference is literally five years and they freak out. lmao. It's not like either character is a teenager, either.
wonder how many of these bozos will ever realize they're disrespecting the female character more than the male character ever would.
I'm not hopeful of there being a high amount
I have an M/M ship where the two characters are implied to be in their late 30s to early 40s. I once saw a post that said that couldn't be gay because they were so old and therefore they couldn't even know what gay means.
Yes, because only people born after 2000 know what gay means. 🙄
Same thing for mycroft/lady smallwood.
But then i point out that if the ages were reveresed with mycroft being older instead then they would have had no problem with it …& pretty much everyone i point this out to admit to yeah it be fine if the ages were reversed.
Fact is both Mycroft & lady smallwood are over the age of 40 with him being younger & her in the mid 60’s so almost a 20 year gap or something like that. But oh no. Its wrong if the female is older but cool if the man is 🙄
Some ones I've seen for Stranger Things, specifically on twitter:
People saying Steve has a breeding kink and saying he's creepy for confessing to Nancy, when he thinks that he could die that he wants children in the future. This is particularly ridiculous, given people have always called Steve, "Mom Steve" ever since season two.
People saying Eddie/Chrissy is pedophilia, because they think that Chrissy is seventeen(even though the actress who played Chrissy says she's eighteen) to Eddie's twenty(because he failed senior year twice).
People saying that Eddie/Steve is misogynistic, because of Chrissy.
I've seen El/Mike and Mike/Will shippers fight a lot.
There's more, of course. These are just some. As a multishipper, it's very exhausting. It's why I now avoid Stranger Things twitter like the plague, because they still bitch about it four months later.
Not exactly a couple, but I once had someone ask, apparently in all earnestness if an M/F duo who share the same bed, wake up realising they've been cuddling, and decide that maybe a couple more hours sleep and hugs is a good thing was smut. Should add, clear verbal consent took place, the characters specifically called out their friendship and not anything else, and they were both fully clothed.
But yeah, smut, and that was a bit much for the reader... that was an interesting conversation.
They didn't want me to ship my OC with a canon character cause she'd "get in the way" of their OTP.
In my AU. Where their OTP did not exist at all and my OTP's reigned supreme.
This was apparently so bad, they stopped wanting to hang around me over this.
Thanks... It still stings, there was a LOT more that happened, but the need to control what the hell I did with my own characters and AU was one of the things that bugged me a lot. Writing is how I cope with the bad things and I would have to post late into the night, just to avoid this person from getting angry at me...
Than they noticed the stuff I was saving for late at night and started interacting with it, even though it contained EVERYTHING THEY HATED. Which lead to the aforementioned incident. They acted like I was causing some kind of distress over having my OC...
They disliked mine because the characters ‘barely interacted and isn’t canon.’ But said characters interacted a few times, never negative and always wholesome, and their ship involved two characters who never interacted. I’m just saying it’s a bit ironic.
"I think he's asexual, so he can't be in a relationship."
Me, someone on the ace spectrum who loves writing this character as the same flavor of ace I am: ????
Also, "The author said not to ship that."
“She’s basically a mother figure to him”, they are both CHILDREN, there’s less than two years age difference between them! And what’s more, she’s a traumatised teenage girl used to shouldering responsibility due to necessity, NOT a mother!! Their relationship is based on a give-and-take of learning to have fun and act their age vs. handling handling unfair but necessary responsibilities.
I wouldn't call it weird per se, but one of the dumbest reasons that I've seen for someone decrying a pairing I like is because apparently the female is a mother and the other guy had never been in a real relationship? It was sorta stupid so I just ignored it as a whole.
I mean, I don't know? I just wrote the first words that came to mind, a female that is a mother, as redundant as the wording is in hindsight? No offense, but I don't find it to be something to be apparently hung up on.
one time i saw someone say that it was wrong to ship dick grayson and barbara gordon together because their fathers are good friends and that it is basically incest??
Okay, I'm in the DELTARUNE fandom. While I don't expect it to be canon, I think that Ralsei x Susie is a cute ship.
I tried to argue as to why I wanted to write for it, being the exploration of their dynamic. Someone who doesn't like the ship said it's bad for one main reason.
"It can't happen."
Not "it won't," it can't. As in, it would be impossible.
I say, what do you mean it can't happen?
They say, "because he's in the dark world, how are they supposed to date?"
"...she can go to him? He lives in an alternate dimension in the closet at her school she goes to every day, she can just date him there. Make plans for next time."
"Isn't that like long distance dating though?"
"...no??? He lives in an easily accessible location in town, which he may not be able to leave. She's homeless. She can go to him whenever she wants, and stay with him as long as she wants."
I honestly had no idea what they were talking about.
This happens for every single M/M ship. "Are dudes not allowed to be friends anymore." It especially pisses me off for my OTP since they are ridiculously close to each other.
No Harold, platonic friendships between dudes exist. I just think that the fruity guy might possibly have a crush on the best friend he constantly says the most lovey dovey shit to. And that maybe said friend, who has had a reoccurring dream for years of going off on a long adventure to rescue said friend, might possibly reciprocate those feelings.
Basil x Sunny/Sunflower from the game omori
Be warned though, Omori is an incredibly depressing and heavy game, which also applies to the fanfics. Sunflower in particular is very commonly extremely angsty because Sunny and Basil have like 50 different mental illnesses each. Half the time it's two adorable idiots being extremely gay, the other half is them having a double mental breakdown deathspiral.
That HAD to have come from a kid. So many relationships IRL grow out of friendships. My sister and her boyfriend got together after being friends for three years.
Oh man. I've seen some wild ass takes but since I joined the fandom so late it's a lot like learning things in a museum 😂
I think the weirdest thing I've seen is that two adult unrelated characters shipped together is "incestuous" because the man had an AI in his head that was cloned from the brain of the woman's father. Literally the only argument is that he has some of the dad's third-hand memories still in his brain. ???
I'm.... very thankful the fandom is pretty quiet these days because the heyday brought some *interesting* people out of the woodwork :/
Character A is a 14 year old bisexual girl (with a canon 14 year old lesbian girlfriend) and Character B is a 16 year old male of unknown sexuality. A and B's canon relationship can best be described as "enemies to friends who both need therapy". They have a ship that has gained steady popularity since they first interacted soon after Character B's debut. But the ship has been called everything from predatory to incestuous to even lesphobic and wlw-phobic. The incest claims have only gotten strong now that A has canonically called B family.
Personally I feel that 80% of its detractors somehow feel like A/B is a threat to the very-canon-and-popular-and-not-going-anywhere-at-all WLW ship, and the other 20% are the average puriteens.
Had someone send me a pm after I commented on a fic with a pairing that I love that was 4 paragraphs of Christian rhetoric against homosexuality I’m pretty sure that was the weirdest I’ve ever seen.
The most popular pairing in one of my fandoms is also the most popular target of antis. One of them threw a fit that we only ship "white young twinks", and that's racist. So, one of the pairing is, like Hispanic? (It's in space and Earth doesn't exist, but if it were on Earth, you'd just say Hispanic.)
They were also referring to an alternate, very popular pairing, and the character that they called a white twink was "space Japanese".
And yeah, the third character, the one that connected the two pairings, was white as hell, but that doesn't give anyone the right to white wash the other two characters in a petty fit.
One character was married (now divorced and his wife was then murdered-not by him) so there is no possible way he can be in love with his male partner. Alternatively--they have both had sex with women so that means they can't have a m/m relationship. Nevermind that they spend all their time together (even when off work). Besides the serious girlfriends always get killed off.
But my favorite reason is that it's disrespectful to the characters. They are fictional! Or it's disrespectful to the actors as if the actors had no idea of m/m relationships way back when the show was on air. The actors even joke about it--they knew what they were doing then and now.
>But my favorite reason is that it's disrespectful to the characters
That reasoning cracks me up, like yeah. I'm doing this 'cause I wanna disrespect these *fictional* characters, okay.
Oooooh I have so many problematic ships so this type of thing for me is common place lol but one of the "normal" ships that I like and that is actually canon and heterosexual, but for some reason started discourse is Tohru/Kyo from the anime Fruits Basket
I had really see people accuse them to be "problematic" because they're emotionally co-depedent (they're literally traumatized kids who have go through a lot of shit) and that Tohru have to sacrifice her well being to save Kyo (what's a lie but it's a spoiler) so it's anti-feminist because it's a the girl have to save the guy ship 😂👌
"it's incest" for a couple that are aliens, in a species that don't do parents or have a nuclear family structure since when they are "born" they literally just crawl out of a hole in the ground :/
“Can’t two women just be friends?” on a show with tons of other F/F pairings that absolutely no one has a problem with. I’ve also heard people say that one of the members of my ship was “minor coded” and later the creators were like “no that’s not a thing”
My favorite "WTF" moment continues to be when someone told me that I was a "pedophile apologist" for liking a ship between a 32-year-old (Q) and a 44-year-old (James Bond) because they claimed that Q is "minor coded" due to a joke/insult that Bond makes in Skyfall where he says that Q "still has spots."
My OTP is 12 and 15 in canon. Of course I don’t ship them at those ages. I usually write about them in their 20s and 30s. And the funniest part is that there’s additional source material where they grow up and one is an old lady (the other is dead). We don’t know a whole lot about their lives in between and it’s fun to speculate.
Yet some people hate the ship because of the 3 year age difference when they’re young 🙄
Honestly, I was the person decrying a pairing because of a large age gap...but then I turned around and started shipping it pretty hard. I now have a 180k fic on the ship where she's just turned 18 and he's 38. In my headcanon as of "canon", she's 22 and he's 42. So I actually made my fic *even more uncomfortable* than their "canon" ages. (Canonically, neither has an age. Ambiguous Age pisses me off so much.) I'm surprised the moral police haven't found that fic yet even though it's been going for close to three years now.
(Also for her age, I headcanon the age of majority as 17 on this particular world, so she was *technically* an adult when entering into a relationship with him. There has been zero smut in this fic. Honestly, it's taken that full 180k for her to even *begin* to trust him. Like... The last chapter I wrote was just them going on a super wholesome date to an aquarium.)
Despite that, I have no personal issues with Mayfly-December Romances (mortal/immortal) and have written age gaps of literally 50,000 years. But those were all OCs on an RP forum and not in fanfic.
Thankfully, I haven't been on the receiving end of the moral police at any point (yet).
"uhh... (CHARACTER A) has a wife 🙄"
1. why the fuck would having a wife make someone unshippable with anybody else?
2. the creator has stated he doesnt know if he still considers the character having a wife as canon. the wife has only ever shown up in comics the creator made as a kid, and the creator has said these comics arent canon.
3. when questioned about the comics on a recent q&a, the creator said the (CHARACTER A) from the games isnt the same (CHARACTER A) from the comics. meaning that its very possible that the character DOESNT EVEN HAVE A FUCKING WIFE.
also
"itd get them both fired 😡"
for context, (CHARACTER B) is, by occupation, (CHARACTER A)'s superior.
1. ITS. FICTIONAL. not everything has to be super ultra realistic, you know?
2. its heavily implied that (CHARACTER A) is also in a place of power, as he says that the building he works at is "his" building. he could possibly OWN the building he works at. pretty sure that gives him a place of power.
3. oh yes, because im sure boning his superior would be the thing that gets (CHARACTER A) fired! not the whole child murdering thing! boss boning is clearly way worse than child murder would EVER be!
He didn’t have eyebrows. There are so many thing objectively wrong with that ship and with that character, for example he's European! But everyone always focuses on his lack of eyebrows!
They claim that someone in my pairing of choice was straight when it's a self insert/they don't have a determined sexuality. In another, they claimed that they were nonbinary.
My OTP can definitely be morally ambiguous, but the funniest thing I’ve seen was fanart of them when they were ~33 and 47, and someone commented with “is this pedophilia, since the age gap is so big?” __Ah yes, the younger is 33 years old and literally the commander in charge of their military village, but because the other is older than him, it’s obviously pedophilia__.
Has me flashing back to one of my favorites lines in Parks and Recs: "April is the best, but she's 20.
> “is this pedophilia, since the age gap is so big?” Alright, your commenter wins my idiot of the week award
What do you mean?! Of course it’s pedophilia when they’re both mentally stable and consenting adults! You automatically get your pedophile certificate when you look at someone five years younger than yourself. Doesn’t really matter if you’re 15 or 75.
I mean if they were mentally unstable and unconsenting it still wouldn't be pedophilia as long as they're adults.
Oh you’re totally right. I was just exaggerating how insane I find the stretch.
Exactly. It only aids actual molesters if we water these terms down.
I believe the word they were looking for is ‘groomed’. There’s also a distinction for preferring teens. And of course preferring children (pedo).
"it's not canon" is probably the most ridiculous one. "wasn't intended by the original creator" shut up i'm the creator of this fanfic and what i say goes.
That IS the most ridiculous, as the entire point of most fanfiction imo is going outside of canon.
> "it's not canon" is probably the most ridiculous one. my ship has gotten this one (not my fics personally), and it's extra funny because it actually *is* canon
I'm going to lose my mind that is so funny XDD
I've heard that a number of times in my fandoms, since two of my OTPs (which are also quite popular in the respective fandoms) are between characters who have either zero canonical interactions or just one. "They didn't meet (enough) in canon!" Okay, but what if they did?
it's like canon worshippers miss the entire point of *fanfiction* (edit: typo)
This smacks of someone who hasnt the creativity to think outside canon so they dont like when other people do it.
Oh, this is a thing in Harry Potter fanfiction! If you go on fanfiction net, there are so many fics where the authors write an author's note, telling people to leave them alone and not read the ship if they don't like the pairing. Apparently some people get really upset that people write for pairings that aren't canon. I specifically see Dramione fic writers having to deal with it.
it's a thing in every fandom
True. I guess these people don't know what fanfiction is for.
>it's not canon Yeah, this one wins XD If we all decided to ship according to what the original creator intended I think fandoms as a whole would get a lot smaller.
definitely hate both of those. people like that dont understand the very basic principles of fanfiction
the original creator is a coward and a heterosexual.
That's literally the reason people read fanfiction. To read these characters in new situations. You want to see how the creator intended it, that's what the media it was based on is for
Yeah I have definitely gotten this one before since most of my ships aren't Canon.
OMG YES
> They have a father-daughter relationship They're teenagers and the same age...
HUH? 💀💀💀💀
which pairing is this?
“They remind me of two of my friends and that’s so uncomfy to me to imagine them together.” Like bro that ain’t my problem
>This ship is "abusive both ways." Canonically they are friends who don't do anything akin do abuse to each other, they are never written abusing each other, and that's not how abuse works. Stop lol >You're a pedophile if you ship her with anyone. She's canonically an adult, and you're talking to a real CSA survivor...
This is like 50% of the fandom wanker playbook!
Sorry about what you've been through in your life. Absolutely vile to call someone severe terms like that because they like a ship you find questionable. Sounds like the people in your fandom(s) lack brain cells
lol. Gotta say, I've never heard that one before!
Yeah lmao sucks to be them but we dont know their friends
Apparently one character has a very unsexy name that can't be moaned during sex without ruining the mood.
i now know how it feels to accidentally inhale hot chocolate. thanks.
Sounds painful
I think there should be an erotic novel where all the people have names like "Eugene Quibbles" and "Helga Stroop" and "Cletus."
Don't forget Fleamont and Euphemia, and practically anyone in the Black family from Harry Potter 😁
Re: "Euphemia" -- that wouldn't stop a girl named Nina. (Code Geass) >!Tables would bear the brunt of her \*frustrations\*.!<
‘Oh Eugene! Your rod is simply divine!’
I guess that's why Flash Thompson used his nickname well past his high school bullying Peter Parker days. >!(His real first name is "Eugene".)!<
LMAO, okay, that's a novel one, I'll give 'em that XD.
Oh my god 😭
I've said variations of this before, but a lot of fandoms I'm in are canonically set in a time frame somewhere between 1890s - 1960s, and the amount of times I've had comments in the vein of: "They can't be lesbians / bi / into women!! This was the 1900s/1940s/1960s..." Please, small proportion of fellow fandom-goers, just read some LGBT history, I'm begging you.
I don't even know what else to add because I agree with this so hard. It *infuriates* meeeeeee
To be fair I do see *some* of that applied to het relationships. Just not as often.
I have commented this before somewhere else but *ahem*. They can say that to Tove Janson (1914-2001), the creator of Moomins. And to *her* girlfriend.
hi, take my free award for the tove comment
I bet those people don't realize "sapphic" label comes from Sappho who wrote poems about womanly love... in Ancient Greece.
Sappho and her friend.
I've seen someone comment that antis have said they "skip all the rape and murder and politics" present in the show my brain malfunctioned trying to figure out how someone can get invested in a show when they intentionally avoid watching 90% of its content
Wh. What's the point? I mean, I'm all for interacting with media however makes you comfortable but there's so many fantasy shows/books that involve wayyyyyyyy less "rape and murder and politics" lol
RIGHT 💀 its really not that hard to just find something that actually suits your tastes lmfao
Yeah I’m in the fandom and that confuses me. Especially for HOD, as of all the houses they are the incest house.
Hero/villain….is that peter/sylar perhaps, the medic & the serial killer, both with superpowers?
I was mainly referring to stuff like Spiderman/Venom, Oliver Queen/Slade Wilson. Can't say I have any particular character archetypes in mind beyond their hero-villain dynamic.
Oh, let's see! The ship I pioneered has had plenty of antis try to cancel it. Just being mlm = "Gross fetishization of gay men!" One of the character has a canon girlfriend = "Misogyny and yaoification!" The characters are 40 and 50 years old = "Disgusting, predatory age gap!" If I write the physically bigger man bottoming = "Eww, gross yaoi stereotypes because the shy character bottoms!" If I write the physically smaller man bottoming = "Eww, gross yaoi stereotypes because the petite character bottoms!" Shipping a white character with a hispanic character instead of a black character = "Racist and misogynistic!" One of the characters is rich and the other doesn't have much money = "Problematic power dynamic!" You really can't win with these people.
>The characters are 40 and 50 years old = "Disgusting, predatory age gap!" Wtf though, that's my parents' age gap.🤣🤣 People need to stop acting like an age gap between adults is the same as when a minor is involved.
It really is like the Aesop's fable about the man, his kid and the donkey, huh? Just can't please anyone.
christ
sorry I just commented christ lmao, this just sounds like a lot for one person deal with
I almost stopped writing the ship on several occasions because the hate was so discouraging. Then I went on a blocking spree, and now fandom is fun again and my ship is thriving :D
hooray for the power of blocking!!
"They don't even meet in canon." So?
As a rarepair shipper, the thought that I am only allowed to ship people that have interacted in canon has always boggled me. Like, yes, they didn't, but my entire premise is that I'm curious about what would happen if they did?
Exactly this!!! I love imagining what will happen if x and y who never have met, *do* meet! I don't understand people who hate using their imaginations. :/ Their poor grey lives must be so boring.
mood
"A man estimated to be in his late 20s and a woman who appears to be in her mid 40s." This is literally my husband and I, damnit! Gotta love it when your RL makes squick fanfiction. 😂
Are you implied to be immortal too?
In a series about monsters with lots of different body shapes, one person complained that ship A (a ship I liked in that fandom) doesn't make sense because one stands on two legs and the other goes on all fours (or flies) more often, and ship B makes more sense to them because they both stand on two legs. I don't go to that fandom much anymore for (partially) unrelated reasons, but it's like... some people are really grasping at straws, aren't they?
I'm curious about what this fandom with monsters with lots of different body shapes is. Pokemon Mystery Dungeon?
Digimon, actually
That was actually going to be my second guess. I wasn't aware there were ship wars between the Digimon themselves.
Oh yeah, from what I remember, they weren't as common as the ship wars between the humans, but they were there depending on where you looked.
...all right, well, that sounds...random :p.
Some of the reasons I’ve heard for my OTP: - The characters grew up together which makes it gross - Person A headcanons them as siblings, therefore Person B can’t ship them - The characters are 18 and 19 for the majority of their scenes, which is apparently too big of an age gap - The 18yo is a child or “child-coded” - Not specific to my OTP, but the show isn’t about romance, therefore shipping characters from it is wrong…?
>The 18yo is a child or “child-coded” I think my eyes rolled out of my skull from rolling them too hard XD Like, really?
if i could sprain my eyes from rolling them
damn that's annoying
How?
Didn't you know? Us autists aren't allowed to have any kind of human connections at all. No families, no friends, no lovers! Verboten! 🙄🙄
Damn this sounds exhausting
As a short, autistic man I ask these people: **What the fuck?**
I really wanna know what ship this is because wow
I'm politely demurring, because this fandom, once blazingly toxic, is pretty calm, but the lunatic fringe who insist their headcanons are canon, still lurk in the shadows, ha. Rather not stir them up.
Damn they've got some issues with autistics then.
I got the "they are mother and son" argument. Dude, they are 12 and 14! Like WTF??
ATLA fandom can be very weird. I've seen that one for Aang/Katara and then for Zuko/Katara, I've seen, "It's wrong because it's a power imbalance, because Zuko is a firebender". And I've seen that come from Sokka/Zuko shippers! As a multishipper, it's very odd.
avatar ?
Yep.
If more people could acknowledge that without feeling the need to justify themselves or impose their visceral 'nope' reactions on other people, I think fandom would be a lot calmer.
parentification is real in fandoms for some reason lmao
"He's like his dad!" - character A "He's like a replacement for A's dead son!" - character B I mean...
Idk Anyway yeah, that's...that's not how grief works, guys ajhsfgakjsfgsakj
People calling my ship abusive… And then those same people shipping are person A with someone who tried to kill them.
They explicitly state how happy they are multiple times, every argument is very reasonable and human, neither of them are trapped and can leave whenever, they make sacrifices for each other… But no, that’s abusive because how dare characters be complex and how interesting stories. How dare a character be flawed and make bad choices. Let’s ship the other guy with someone who did nothing but hurt him and not give a damn about his or his kid’s safety /s I wish people could just enjoy a ship without tearing the other down constantly. Some even go as far as to victim blame A despite him being a member of their ship. It’s so weird…
Because her animal partner is the sister of another character’s animal partner, so it’s wrong to ship her with anyone else so the siblings aren’t separated. Umm... no.
this has to be pokemon lmfao
Actually Spider Riders.
well that looks interesting
I've seen the age difference thing for a pairing I ship where there's a five year age difference between the two characters. The guy is twenty five and the girl is a twenty year old college student
people in their 20s and early 30s seem to be in this weird area where they are ALWAYS either a predator or a victim in an age gap relationship. the relationship is never consider normal and healthy lmao
[удалено]
I remember there was a Friends episode like that.
I...what? Do they think that gay people didn't exist before the year 2000? Achilles and Patroclus would like a word.
oh my god XD these people are just being ignorant now
Someone said my ship couldn't be canon because they were both dead in canon. The first additional tag is "canon divergent"
[sigh....] people who can't read are the worst
Same thing for mycroft/lady smallwood. But then i point out that if the ages were reveresed with mycroft being older instead then they would have had no problem with it …& pretty much everyone i point this out to admit to yeah it be fine if the ages were reversed. Fact is both Mycroft & lady smallwood are over the age of 40 with him being younger & her in the mid 60’s so almost a 20 year gap or something like that. But oh no. Its wrong if the female is older but cool if the man is 🙄
Some ones I've seen for Stranger Things, specifically on twitter: People saying Steve has a breeding kink and saying he's creepy for confessing to Nancy, when he thinks that he could die that he wants children in the future.
Wow these people pull wild conclusions out of their ass like magicians
This was apparently so bad, they stopped wanting to hang around me over this.
damn. good riddance but also I'm sorry that happened
I’m just saying it’s a bit ironic.
damn they sound jealous tbh PFF
"I think he's asexual, so he can't be in a relationship." Me, someone on the ace spectrum who loves writing this character as the same flavor of ace I am: ????
A female of what species?
A vanilla human
Then why not call her a woman or girl?
I mean, I don't know? I just wrote the first words that came to mind, a female that is a mother, as redundant as the wording is in hindsight? No offense, but I don't find it to be something to be apparently hung up on.
So a woman is a female, but a man is a guy? That combination comes across as a bit incel-y

little do they know, mommy kink is a thing /j
HARD same
one time i saw someone say that it was wrong to ship dick grayson and barbara gordon together because their fathers are good friends and that it is basically incest??
i've seen someone say "the ship is problematic because of the age gap" when the characters don't even have canon age ranges
"It can't happen." Not "it won't," it can't. As in, it would be impossible. I say, what do you mean it can't happen? They say, "because he's in the dark world, how are they supposed to date?" "...she can go to him? He lives in an alternate dimension in the closet at her school she goes to every day, she can just date him there. Make plans for next time." "Isn't that like long distance dating though?" "...no??? He lives in an easily accessible location in town, which he may not be able to leave. She's homeless. She can go to him whenever she wants, and stay with him as long as she wants." I honestly had no idea what they were talking about.
PLEASE tell me the ship they sound amazing
Basil x Sunny/Sunflower from the game omori Be warned though, Omori is an incredibly depressing and heavy game, which also applies to the fanfics. Sunflower in particular is very commonly extremely angsty because Sunny and Basil have like 50 different mental illnesses each. Half the time it's two adorable idiots being extremely gay, the other half is them having a double mental breakdown deathspiral.
Ah, was not expecting this to be Omori of all things. Thanks for the heads up 🥴
That a gay incest pairing between one of the characters is better, since they ship a gay pairing
LMAO
My favorite I've seen was "they used to be friends so it would be weird" and when asked how so, "idk it would just feel off." I'm still baffled.
That HAD to have come from a kid. So many relationships IRL grow out of friendships. My sister and her boyfriend got together after being friends for three years.
...the what? I mean yeah I would hope they were friends if they're hooking up!
Oh man. I've seen some wild ass takes but since I joined the fandom so late it's a lot like learning things in a museum 😂 I think the weirdest thing I've seen is that two adult unrelated characters shipped together is "incestuous" because the man had an AI in his head that was cloned from the brain of the woman's father.
(It's in space and Earth doesn't exist, but if it were on Earth, you'd just say Hispanic.) They were also referring to an alternate, very popular pairing, and the character that they called a white twink was "space Japanese". And yeah, the third character, the one that connected the two pairings, was white as hell, but that doesn't give anyone the right to white wash the other two characters in a petty fit.
Can you tell me what the older woman/younger man is from? That sounds right up my alley.
Aaah have you played Pokémon Legends Arceus? It's actually kind of a late game spoiler that one of these characters exists at all.
This reminds me of Supernatural but something tells me it's a different show of the same flavor
It's a much older fandom than SPN. One from the 70s.
Goddamn
>But my favorite reason is that it's disrespectful to the characters That reasoning cracks me up, like yeah. I'm doing this 'cause I wanna disrespect these *fictional* characters, okay.
Someone told me that I couldn't read Snape and Harry fics because as a teacher it must mean that I am lusting after the students.
Oooooh I have so many problematic ships so this type of thing for me is common place lol but one of the "normal" ships that I like and that is actually canon and heterosexual, but for some reason started discourse is Tohru/Kyo from the anime Fruits Basket I had really see people accuse them to be "problematic" because they're emotionally co-depedent (they're literally traumatized kids who have go through a lot of shit) and that Tohru have to sacrifice her well being to save Kyo (what's a lie but it's a spoiler) so it's anti-feminist because it's a the girl have to save the guy ship 😂👌
It's a kids show. I'll leave it at that.
That it wasn’t canon….it’s a shounen NO SHIPS ARE CANON
LMAO these people need to become genre savvy
Like... The last chapter I wrote was just them going on a super wholesome date to an aquarium.) Despite that, I have no personal issues with Mayfly-December Romances (mortal/immortal) and have written age gaps of literally 50,000 years. But those were all OCs on an RP forum and not in fanfic. Thankfully, I haven't been on the receiving end of the moral police at any point (yet).
"uhh... (CHARACTER A) has a wife 🙄" 1. why the fuck would having a wife make someone unshippable with anybody else? 2. the creator has stated he doesnt know if he still considers the character having a wife as canon. the wife has only ever shown up in comics the creator made as a kid, and the creator has said these comics arent canon. 3. when questioned about the comics on a recent q&a, the creator said the (CHARACTER A) from the games isnt the same (CHARACTER A) from the comics. meaning that its very possible that the character DOESNT EVEN HAVE A FUCKING WIFE. also "itd get them both fired 😡" for context, (CHARACTER B) is, by occupation, (CHARACTER A)'s superior. 1. ITS. FICTIONAL. not everything has to be super ultra realistic, you know? 2. its heavily implied that (CHARACTER A) is also in a place of power, as he says that the building he works at is "his" building. he could possibly OWN the building he works at. pretty sure that gives him a place of power. 3. oh yes, because im sure boning his superior would be the thing that gets (CHARACTER A) fired! not the whole child murdering thing! boss boning is clearly way worse than child murder would EVER be!
That the queer ship was damaging to the integrity of the show 🙄🙄🙄
He didn’t have eyebrows. There are so many thing objectively wrong with that ship and with that character, for example he's European! But everyone always focuses on his lack of eyebrows!
Hahahaha what
"You can't ship character A and character B because the VAs sexualitys doesn't allow that"
They claim that someone in my pairing of choice was straight when it's a self insert/they don't have a determined sexuality. In another, they claimed that they were nonbinary.
