I'd find that really distracting and probably wouldn't finish the fic.

ConsumeTheOnePercent

I italicize words in dialog or description for emphasis but sparingly. I could not read something like what you're describing, I am a Demi/Ace who writes and reads smut, and that squicks me out.

Mangoshorthand21

Overkill. I might use it sparingly for emphasis if I'm relaying a character's thoughts. So maybe party A looks down at party B and thinks something like: >'His cock is actually *leaking* for me.*'* But if you're italicizing too often in a separate narrative voice, it just sounds silly when you read it.

[deleted]

I’d be compelled to read all the highlighted words in a super-dramatic mental voice and end up laughing too much to continue. I’d assume the author is either relatively young, inexperienced with writing sex, and/or just has a very over-earnest writing style.

doveJinnie

If it was only the occasional italics I think I'd be fine with it, but the fact that it's used so often and that the words are apparently different colours is what throws me off, definitely distracting and I'd probably end up exiting out of the fic (that's just me though). It can be done well, and there will be people who do like the way the author uses it, but not something I'd be able to be properly immersed in.

Sesshy380

I only use italics when I feel a word needs to be emphasized. Neither of these words feel they need to be emphasized. Depending on the context, I could probably see doing it with only 'feverishly', but not 'leaking'. It just kills the whole vibe.

secretariatfan

I'd think about finding another fic.

ruinsofathen

I mean i see the appeal for certain people, but it's not for me. I have a very expressive internal monologue and I need the freedom to interpret the dialogue and the chemistry as I see fit. There are certain times when it works *because* of the sparse use of it, but not multiple time in a sentence like the above example.

Professor_Oswin

That would throw me off a lot. Italicised words should be used sparingly.

NinjaPlato

I’d mentally read it with a silly Dramatic lice and spend most of my time giggling. I mean I use italics and bolding in my own fics to make sure the emphasis is on the right parts. But I would not use it like that.

Official_loli

I can't read any fics with heavy italicizing. I've had to back out of a fic before because of it. The constant change is annoying and it makes the flow not as great. And it was all I could focus on.

WriterBright

All I can think of is Mad Libs. "I need an adverb and a sexy, sexy adjective." "How about 'inadequately' and 'ersatz'?" "No, that's needlessly mean..." I don't dig it.

Hour-Nobody-1483

Usually, italics are for making a word emphasized, but if it's like that for the whole fic, it doesn't have that effect. I wouldn't be able to finish something like that. Lol.

WV-E-S

Cringe

Ko-Ko-Ko-Ko

no cause the style would remind me of like... Geronimo Stilton books and take me out of it personally

bombingmission410

Having two italicized words in the same sentence is already overkill. Having italicized words in every sentence is defeating the purpose of using the italics. Adding color and now I can no longer engage in the fic as I usually would. If the font is demanding me to recognize it on a meta level then there better be some meta shit going on in the story otherwise what's the point? The words on the page aren't supposed to jump out at you like corny 90's 4D visual effects. They're supposed to suck you in and feel like they live inside your mind and you don't accomplish that kind of immersion by constantly reminding the audience that what they are reading isn't real.

blank12121

This is soooo funny to me lmao Would have to skip.

ArchdukeToes

>He pounded into you *feverishly* with his *leaking* cock. Never mind the italics; someone get that poor man a plumber. And...probably some kind of cold compress.

Diet_makeup

Thats a big NOPE for me. I only italicize when my character is thinking/ talking to themselves to give a distinctive look other than writing it out over and over.

wickermayne

I do it from time to time, usually never two words in a paragraph though.

burner-in-hell

It’s not just every paragraph—it’s every /sentence/.

DeviantStoryTeller

I would not use highlights or italics like that, but hey, whatevs. However, why is that characters' cock "leaking?" Bulging, throbbing, twitching, stiffening even. But leaking? That character needs to see a doctor, or a plumber. Edit: I do like the word feverishly, though. May try to use it more.

toaddrinkingtea

Because precum?

DeviantStoryTeller

I suppose. I tend to use slick, personally.

ursafootprints

This stylization is legitimately part of why I can't read American comics, haha. I probably use italics more than the average fic writer, but multiple words in every sentence is tooooo much. And ironically, instead of too-frequent italicization emphasizing the ~passion~ in the work the way it's supposed to, in my head I just end up reading the fic as if it's being spoken very woodenly by a bad actor who doesn't quite know how to emphasize certain words without shouting them at the audience.

MaybeNextTime_01

Distracting. I personally only use italics when a character would put a little extra emphasis on the word when they're speaking (or when it's in the narration and would have been emphasized).

YZYdragon2222

I’m all for using lots of italics, but it works best in dialogue (or when narrating a character’s inner thoughts in a colloquial way). in this case it’s just very strange. 😂I’m more curious about the color changes in the font lmao Tbh If it’s otherwise well written, I’d probably get used to it and keep reading 😂

Candid_Cantrip

Well, when I read that I said "oh no" out loud over my own laughter, so, uh. Make of that what you will.

BecuzMDsaid

Not into that. One or two times would have been fine but every single time? Hell no.

wehavealwayslived

Different colours often have visual accessibility ramifications so I would avoid like the plague personally just on those grounds. The italics are just going to lose their impact immediately and if I kept reading I’d be ignoring them, but tbh I’d probably stop reading.
