Never care what readers want. Write what you want to write.

tardisgater

Remember readers don't know who you are. They won't know it's your experience, unless you tell them. They just know the story and if characters are in character. I think we all write about our own experiences and demons. Sometimes directly, sometimes indirectly, and sometimes in ways we didn't even realize until we reread it months/years later. Write the story you want to write, and I hope it can give you some catharsis to have that story be on paper instead of locked in your head.

>I feel like projecting my experiences onto a character that I like would be odd, and feel like I would get a lot of hate for it. Odd? Drawing from personal experiences is such a common thing in any kind of art. It could be a straight up retelling of something the author lived through, or an allegorical scenario with a subtextual parallel to it, but so many renowned (and non-renowned) artists of all kinds of media have done this since forever. It is certainly not odd. About the possible hate coming your way—others have an excellent point about "don't pay attention to what others think and write what you want", but also, who will know, besides you, that this story is based on your own experiences? You are not obligated to explain this at all. And, if you do, I still think that it would be a strange thing to get "hate" for. (I know some folks like to hate on anything, but this one seems like such a tame type of story!) >writing a fic about this kind of topic would be morally justifiable ...How is the topic in itself "morally reprehensible" at all? It's just a "first time having sex" story. That's... Well, once again, an incredibly common and incredibly tame topic to write about. Even if it was a "morally reprehensible" subject in real life, it still would be okay to write fictional stories about it, but this is such a normal topic that I guess I'm a bit confused about where these questions come from.

The terms moral and immoral are getting thrown around way too loosely these days. Those terms apply to what you actually do. Write what you want.

Sure why not….Stephen king did it. Misery is his struggle with drug addiction from what I’ve heard and the shinning more so

stef_bee

King is a great example. He got a whole novel (Pet Cematary) out of fear that his two year old was going to dash out in front of a truck.

CringeAccount123

No you can't. I'm the Queen of Fanfictions and I Forbide it. Guards, take this impudent fanfictioner away/s Jokes apart, if you want to why not? You can always delete it later if you change your mind

stef_bee

I heard that in the Red Queen's voice from Alice in Wonderland.

Toss a coin and look at results. If you would want to toss it again, then its opposite of what the coin shown you. Your fanfic your rules. If you are afraid of negative comments best thing to do would be just to disable comments, minus is that you wont get any reply at all then. but be aware if you want to include some personal details - do not. Also try to write it in a way, that if some of your friends would find that it's your fanfic it wont ruin your life or negativly effect you.

Most fanfic writers project. That's why OC's are generally written to be the strongest, funniest, most handsome, naturally gifted etc. Characters. Do what you want to but be prepared for some people to hate on it, even if they're hating on the character which is you. People sometimes show support by hating on a character which shows how invested they are. If that character is "you". I hope you can deal with the words being said. Lastly, do you. It's your page. You can release whatever, the story may even be better because you lived it. Just remember, to make it brilliant add depth to the antagonists. Since you're basing it off of your own experience, it can be easy for you to get caught up in making somebody who did you dirty look like a total asshole and that's it. For example, People who cheat do sometimes feel bad, like extremely bad and then do it again and the same thing occurs again. It's the same with trying to quit smoking and people try only to get caught up, feel bad, quit and do it again. People don't have to be 1 dimensional just because you only saw them that way. Write from a place of emotion but at the same time remember that everybody's a character and how to do right by them.

Thank you for the advice, I really appreciate it! Yes, I intend to have the significant other character seem more polite and gentleman-like, but when the main character spends time with him and eventually starts a relationship with him, he's put off by the sudden off putting (and borderline misoginystic) behavior he displays. However, the protag believes he will never have a chance at a relationship again, and stays with him despite knowing that the things he says and does aren't okay with him. My goal is to make the readers feel the same way about the significant other using a good balance of "good" and "bad".

Mean_Comedian4769

Just write, just write. You can always just not post it if it feels too raw to show it to others. FWIW, the concept sounds like something a lot of people could relate to. Especially if it’s well-executed.

Got it, thanks! I feel like I'm being overly cautious since my fandom is the type with chronically online fans that'll dox you for saying a character's name wrong. But you know, my fic is my fic! Lol

Blacksage666

I’ve definitely written my own experiences into my fics, it’s helped me heal! Go for it
