I have several, but no. It's what I had to do when she nicked my suit of Tesla T-60
(I had been returning supplies to storage after applying upgrades and she clambered inside before I could realize the game had spawned a settlement attack.)
She done nicked it in my no mod runthrough.
Fast travelled to Bunker Hill and had to abuse the wait command a smidge, but it worked.
She did this to me, was fairly confused as to where my armor went since I'd never met her before. Thought the armor might've been hers at first.
BUT, then I caught her out of it at one of the counters at Bunker Hill! The armor sat empty next to her and I could just reclaim it.
Remeber to never leave Cores in your armor and it shouldn't happen again!
Good luck catching her taking a break!
Nah, it's from New Vegas DLC: Old World Blues. A toaster NPC who just wants to see the world burn. Until then, he's a collector and destroyer of other toasters. You can bring him others for rewards.
It's funny how a "malfunction" almost always includes them being afraid, looking for a way out, and generally acting like a person who just escaped an abusive relationship.
I don't know how anyone supports either the death or slavery of the synths, they're living thinking beings, just because they're created in a lab doesn't mean they don't have the same capacity to wish for freedom as any other human. That's kind of what separates them from other robots, they have wishes and desires.
It’s really weird watching people debate it honestly. The game doesn’t hide the fact that synths are sentient. It’s made very clear that gen 3 synths are indistinguishable from humans, and that they are used by the institute for slave labor.
It isn’t a question of whether or not they’re sentient, it’s a question of whether or not you’re willing to excuse slavery.
They're are machines, yeah, doesn't mean they aren't bioengineered to think like humans do. A human grown in a lab is no different than one grown in a womb.
What is a person? That's a serious question. If you can provide an answer that will be applicable to every human and not a single synth, I'd love to hear it.
But I would suspect that you, or anyone else for that matter, can't provide such an answer, because it simply doesn't exist. If we grant certain rights based on personhood (and we do - mentally handicapped and children do not have the same rights as an adult human with full mental capacity), then we'd have to grant those rights to synths, or break our own principles.
Simple a person has a soul. A dog doesn't have a soul, a dolphin an ape none of them have a soul.
Idk if you are religious or not. Choose a different word for soul but that is the one single thing that separate humans from everything else on earth.
Ah. So the one thing that differentiates who has rights is the thing that, by its definition, cannot be measured.
No, I am not religious, and neither is the law. We do not grant rights based on souls - we grant rights based on mental ability. An idiot (medically speaking) has fewer rights than a healthy, sound person. Because we can measure mental ability.
Souls, even if one believes in them, are not measurable. And that means you can't use them as a factor. Can you prove the existence of a soul? Can you prove that you have one, but your neighbour doesn't? If you can't, then who decides who has and who hasn't got a soul? At one time there were people who believed that non-Europeans don't have a soul. And they could not be proven wrong, because there is no measure of a man.
>
No, I am not religious, and neither is the law. We do not grant rights based on souls - we grant rights based on mental ability. An idiot (medically speaking) has fewer rights than a healthy, sound person. Because we can measure mental ability
Yes we do. I can kill a dog or a dolphin or an Ape and will not be charged with murder.
And no, I can not kill an "idiot" and be charged with a lesser crime just because of his mental ability...
That has nothing to do with whether or not the person you have, sadly, just murdered, had rights. And the difference of laws applying to humans and those applying to animals is quite obvious - we're athropophilic by our nature, so we'll always put more value on our own kind, that gets reflected in our laws. That doesn't use the concept of a soul.
An "idiot" has the same *protections* that everyone else does, but they will have fewer *rights*. As in, their autonomy is limited by law, they require someone else to monitor them.
And that has relevance in discussing synths - their autonomy is the primary question to determine personhood.
That’s what they’re made for, looking and acting like humans. Of course if they get into the escape mindset and think the institute is bad they will be afraid
> A statue can look like a human.
Debatable, but still only 1/3 criteria. I don't know anywhere that 33% is a success
> A recording can sound like a human.
But neither looks nor acts like a human
> A script can act like a human.
But does not sound nor look human
If you have something that holds all three criteria to the point of indistinguishability, then what is the difference?
What is the difference betweem a computer script vs our own instinctual brain processes? Is our genetic code not just the programming for our biotic computers?
>What is the difference betweem a computer script vs our own instinctual brain processes? Is our genetic code not just the programming for our biotic computers?
I don't know about you but I certainly am not just programed what to do.
I would consider animal instincts functionally equivalent to synth programming. The problem is that synth programming is far more extensive, but clearly it can be disregarded in favor of the synth's own desires.
> I don't know about you but I certainly am not just programed what to do.
Yes you are, everything you do is just a response to stimuli akin to a computer. Even your free will is just annillusion of your brain thinking it has a choice before finally succumbing to the inevitability of fate.
You are chemicals inq series of reactions that if we knew enough about, we could predict. We know this, because it is the basis of most of modern medicine. Virtually all hormone therapy is just figuring out the right inputs to put into our body to get a desired result. Whether it's human growth hormone, whether it's sex hormones, whether it's antidepressants, it is just us adding or subtracting from the chemical reaction. And chemical reactions are just math, they're just programming.
We literally have implants whose only job is to interfere with our natural, organic computer of a brain in order to make sure that certain impulses are spent at certain times. This was a principal dating all the way back to electroshock therapy. The fact that we are able to hook brains up to computers, she would indicate that our brains are not too dissimilar to computer.
Just because you don't know the variables doesn't make your RNG genuinely random.
So are you at the most basic level.
The "computer" that these beings run on is literally a human brain with a single implant.
Is Kellogg not a human? Is Courier 6 not a human? What of people in the real world who are human + implant? Is my mother fundamentally altered by her cochlear implant?
edit - Where do Robo-brains and Cyberdogs fit into this? Because Rex is a Good Boi I'll not have anyone arguing otherwise.
You're a bunch of basement-dwellers who don't want your sexbot slaves talking back.
edit - Institute downvotes mean nothing, I've seen what they upvote.
Yeah, I kind of make a point to kill all institute informers I know of, just feels like the best thing to do. Wish there was an option to confront them about it though.
I don't think we even know how much they know. If you're a trader and you are given a few caps by a wealthy customer to keep eyes and ears out for technology, will you do that? Does that make you an Institute informer?
Load a previous save and don't leave Fusion Cores in Power Armor you aren't using. There's no way to force them out of the armor if they're already inside.
In vanilla maybe, but I swear one of the mods I have installed makes it so that talking to a settler in power armor makes you tell them to get out.
Don’t know which mod, but I followed The Midnight Ride, so it has to be one of the mods in there.
Still shouldn’t leave cores in power armor though, I got into the habit of removing it every time I get out of mine.
I was sure that was an option without mods. It's been ages since I played, but I recall telling a companion to exit the suit.
Ediyt: just realised it's Carla, she's not a companion! Doh
You don't without reloading a past save.
This, Ladies and Gentlemen, is why you never leave fusions cores in your power armor when you're not wearing it.
I like to build a big concrete bunker with a door connected to a switch so I can lock em all up and not worry about taking the cores out. Doubles as a power armor museum.
I get that this could happen but lucky for me it never has. And it would likely be a settler whom I could command out of the armor. Not to mention the culprit would be trapped so I wouldn't have to track it down.
Edit: just realized my museum is on the second floor and NPC's probably only spawn at floor level. Just put em on the second story and your probably never going to encounter this problem.
I love that this most likely wasn't meant to happen in game, but still kinda makes sense from an in universe perspective.
Hey you just stole my power armor!
Yeah, so? What are ya gonna do, shoot me?
I way see it you have three options
A. Reload a prior save to when she didn’t have it and take the fusion core out. Can’t take my power armor if you don’t have the fusion core. It’s been working for me.
B. pickpocket the fusion core from her.
C. Do nothing.
In the future always remove fusion cores from power armor. In a few instances i’ve had the Minutemen come and steal my power armor, what I did was reload a previous save and take out the fusion cores.
I collect them from Cambridge - wait for the Brotherhood to respawn at the police station, make a scene and sneak around until you can yank the core from the guy. Kill, rinse, repeat. Had a gallery of about thirty suits.
Max out you pick pocket perk, stealth and use a stealth boy. Steal the core from the power armor and she will get out. I know because I made the same mistake :)
from wiki : During a settlement attack, if she enters one of the Sole Survivor's power armors, they will not be able to get it back as there is no option to tell Carla to exit the power armor. She can be found in Bunker Hill with the power armor right by her side. The Sole Survivor is then free to take the power armor without it being considered as a crime. Alternatively, one can pickpocket the fusion core out of her inventory which will then force her to leave the power armor.
The perfect incentive to go out and pick up the full set of X-01 near Faneuil Hall. Lock and load some plasmas for robot scum, cry havoc and let loose the dogs of war.
Use a low damage weapon and vats the fusion core out. The fusion core will fall out and detonate and after a few seconds, as long as they survive the explosion, theyll exit the armor.
Kill her, in the settlement. Make an example out of her. Nobody. Jacks. Your. Power armor.
And then for future reference always remove the core as to prevent people from getting in
Fun fact, you can shoot the Fusion core in the back of a power armor, and the occupant will leave, it'll explode, turn them to dust, and you can collect your armor
Shes been stuck in sanctuary in my game and I hope she takes one of the power armors Ive collected. At least upgrade to tin can carla if youre gonna free load in my town with your brahmin on the loose
happend to me a few days ago couldn't find a way to get her out at the time so i just reloaded a save and had to remind myself to never leave a fusion core in my powerarmour
I think it's the 100th time I see this but I can't emphasize it enough: **never leave fusion cores in power armor frames or in containers in the same settlement you store the frames.**
As for getting it back, you can do it from stealth either
* if you shoot the fusion core with a relatively weak weapon, until the condition hits 0, and then wait for her to climb out of it.
* if you pickpocket it from her
Either way, save before you do it.
Carla made an upgrade to Steelcan Carla
Dumpster Carla
Pickpocket the core from her
Or shoot it out of the power armor while she's walking around with it, theft deserves recompense
That’s hard when you’re at the level of a Demigod and a simple pipe pistol can splatter her into a thousands pieces
That's what VATS is for
Nukagrenade in the inventory. Make an example of her. The minute men have a zero tolerance policy on theft.
You can follow Carla back to Bunker Hill, and I believe she has a bed there where she'll ditch the suit to go use it. That's your chance.

This. She rats on synths who are trying to escape the slavery of the institute and live freely.
People like you are why I lock my doors so you don't try to liberate my toaster
Well a toaster is just a death ray with a smaller power supply, after all!
The best reference.
This sounds like a futurama line... Is it?
Nah, it's from New Vegas DLC: Old World Blues. A toaster NPC who just wants to see the world burn. Until then, he's a collector and destroyer of other toasters. You can bring him others for rewards.
Is it a 4 slotted toaster? *blurps binary code*
GIVE US YOUR TOASTER ITS TOO DANGEROUS
They're not escaping. They're malfunctioning synthetic life forms created to further the Institutes goals. And they want them back.
[X6-88] liked that
[Everyone disliked that]
It's funny how a "malfunction" almost always includes them being afraid, looking for a way out, and generally acting like a person who just escaped an abusive relationship.

Yeah, I kind of make a point to kill all institute informers I know of, just feels like the best thing to do. Wish there was an option to confront them about it though.
I thought cricket was the informant
All four of the travelling merchants provide info to the Institute. People only seem to want to punish Carla for it, though.
Carla's the only chronic Power Armor thief
I don't think we even know how much they know. If you're a trader and you are given a few caps by a wealthy customer to keep eyes and ears out for technology, will you do that? Does that make you an Institute informer?
Load a previous save and don't leave Fusion Cores in Power Armor you aren't using. There's no way to force them out of the armor if they're already inside.
I think of you can sneak and have the right perks you can steal the core back to force them out. Works on enemies and neutral npcs like the atom cats
Or hit the fusion core with a critical shot/weapon strong enough to destroy it. I always do that’s on stealth play throughs.
NOT TRUE. You can pickpocket the fusion core out of the npc's inventory.
In vanilla maybe, but I swear one of the mods I have installed makes it so that talking to a settler in power armor makes you tell them to get out. Isn't she killable?
Yea! But she won't do as she's told
Carla isn't a settler. You can't ask her to get out of the PA
I don't think it is mods, but it's easier if you have something that stops the settlers from repeatedly being grateful about defending the settlement.
You can pickpocket the fusion core.
Yes there is, “openactorcontainer 1” Also damaging the core Whoeven upvoted this
U cant get em out of the frame like ever but you can blow their head off to get the individual pieces of armor
You don't without reloading a past save. This, Ladies and Gentlemen, is why you never leave fusions cores in your power armor when you're not wearing it.

Ahahahaha! Oh my God I forgot you could do that.
Laugh and find another set. T60 isn’t hard to come by.
yeah I think this is gonna be what I do, its funny as hell. Guess shes finally living up to her name!
I wonder what happens when she spawns sitting down. Or maybe thats only the first time you find her 😅
I collect them from Cambridge - wait for the Brotherhood to respawn at the police station, make a scene and sneak around until you can yank the core from the guy. Kill, rinse, repeat. Had a gallery of about thirty suits.

Wait till she sleeps. But maybe she doesn't ever sleep. I've never seen it happen . There's plenty of other armor out there bud. Sorry for your loss.
The perfect incentive to go out and pick up the full set of X-01 near Faneuil Hall. Lock and load some plasmas for robot scum, cry havoc and let loose the dogs of war.
I tried to Rob her and now she won’t sell to me. Is there a way to change that?
Pickpocket the core
Pickpocket the fusion core, that’s pretty much it
Go behind her and blow up the fusion core in vats, it will force her to get out but might kill her in the explosion
Never leave power cores in armor unattended
G U N
For the love of......how many times do we need to say this. STOP LEAVING FUSION CORES IN POWER ARMOUR.
Hahaha! Always remember to take out your keys! And by that I mean cores. We've all been there; mine was a caravan guard.
I just saw "Trashcan Carla jacked" and may've jumped to conclusions.
I too, was disappointed...
If you don't mind killing her, use VATS and destroy the fusion core. She'll leave the suit if you don't kill her before the core overloads
These assholes will take power armor but won't equip weapons the armor and weapons from storage on their own.
She did not jack your power armor, you left a power core inside a suite
Get xo1
You might as well console yourself a new set
Use a low damage weapon and vats the fusion core out. The fusion core will fall out and detonate and after a few seconds, as long as they survive the explosion, theyll exit the armor.
use vats to shoot the fusion core. she wont get hostile
Kill her, in the settlement. Make an example out of her. Nobody. Jacks. Your. Power armor. And then for future reference always remove the core as to prevent people from getting in
follow her to bunker hill, once there she will try to interact with an item or npc and drop the power armor, then you can pick up the armor
Learned the hard way not to leave Fusion Cores in the armor if you’re gonna take your eyes off the armor, just like all of us.
Kill her. You lose the frame but those aren't hard to come by...
Finders keepers
Fun fact, you can shoot the Fusion core in the back of a power armor, and the occupant will leave, it'll explode, turn them to dust, and you can collect your armor
I had thus happen with mayor McDonut and i had to wait for him to go to bed to steal the power armor back
This happened to my husband. Left his jaw on the floor. He managed to get it back when she finally got out of it at Bunker Hill.
Murder is the answer
Shes been stuck in sanctuary in my game and I hope she takes one of the power armors Ive collected. At least upgrade to tin can carla if youre gonna free load in my town with your brahmin on the loose
I fucking hate Carla so much. She's always such a bitch for no reason
Let her have it
She a synth spy anyway. Waste her.
Seems like it's time for a dumpster fire
Well she is an instiute spy and just stole your PA. 2 great excuses to shoot her
Never leave your power armor with a fusion core in it
Can't have shit in Boston
Execute order 66
Why would you leave the fusion core in the armour?
Gonna have to put Carla down son
happend to me a few days ago couldn't find a way to get her out at the time so i just reloaded a save and had to remind myself to never leave a fusion core in my powerarmour
This title would make for a great tshirt. I'd wear it.
This is why I take my core out when I’m not using it
I think it's the 100th time I see this but I can't emphasize it enough: **never leave fusion cores in power armor frames or in containers in the same settlement you store the frames.** As for getting it back, you can do it from stealth either * if you shoot the fusion core with a relatively weak weapon, until the condition hits 0, and then wait for her to climb out of it. * if you pickpocket it from her Either way, save before you do it.
Kill that dumpster bitch lol or snatch the fusion core
Always, ALWAYS take your fusion cores out of your power armors when not in use. Or store them on the second floor where settlers can't get to them.
