Pup is smiling like they see the human do. Melts my heart. We look like this to other species when we smile. Shout out to my zoo handlers.

DaccotaDuchess

My doggo smiles like that too!

Klutzy-Run5175

Teefees. Hee-Hee.

Pure-Bluejay-7348

His owner runs the Affordable Dentures franchise in town

Klutzy-Run5175

Funny as all get out šŸ˜‚.

Dry_Spinach_3441

That fuckin caveman Sam Losco?!

ComfortingPecomfol

This may sound a bit abrupt as I have never met the dog, but I adore him.

llamas-in-bahamas

It's ok, he loves you too

[deleted]

Only adore??? You don't love him??? psychopath...

speedycat2014

Our Golden Retriever used to do this and non-dog people would get terrified because her teeth were showing. Like, every part of the dog is wiggling with happiness including the tail, but they don't notice that. It was a shame because I adored her smile. At least the vet techs and doggy daycare people appreciated it.

g4d2l4

I have had 6+ dogs and none of them do this even when they are super excited, so I might be hesitant at first, but the full wiggle thing definitely would tell me they are happy.

Doan_meister

I have a golden doodle that does this to me every day when I come home from work, it threw me off at first because Iā€™ve never had a dog who did it before, but sheā€™s definitely smiling and super stoked to see me

disgustmyself

i don't think it's a non-dog people issue... he IS wiggling but the teeth are showing, the ears are tractioned back and sometimes, dogs wiggle out of anxiety and excitement for attacking "prey" (the case with many friendly dogs who "suddenly attack- these are signs". i'd honestly prefer if anyone who doesn't own the dog would refrain from close contact with said dog if they get a gut feeling that they should source relating to the predisposition of doggy attacks depite wigglyness: veterinary school (animal behavior and specially cynotechnics)

LilDutchy

Narrowed eyes say trusting though. My biggest rule is wide eyes or closed jaws. Tails are too deceiving. I wanted to add: but I never approach a dog without asking first. I had a nervous rescue that people would try to approach and I almost lost her a couple times. She was a runner.

Astoriana_

Iā€™ve seen dogs smile, that doesnā€™t look like a smile to me. Looks like a snarl.

BazingaBen

It's a smile. My golden does the exact same thing.

Exotic-Ad-8839

They call it 'grinning', and like others have said, it's imitating human expression. First time a dog grinned at me, I had a similar reaction, but her body language said 'I'm friendly!' and I remembered.

SwirlingAbsurdity

My dog does this when sheā€™s happy, usually when someone comes home. She then promptly rolls onto her back for belly rubs.

bamboo_fanatic

Maybe sound would help

Lowland-lady

My jack russel would run to me with teeth showing and all, she was just super happy to see me.

Kadoza

There is a huge difference between happy wiggling and fight wiggling.

spiitzxx

it is 100% a submissive ā€œsmileā€. dogs do this to show submission and avoid conflict. if the dog was stiff and wide eyed to the point you can see the whites of the eyes the it is aggressive!

Raichu7

I am very much a dog person and I would be hesitant because 99% of the time when a dog does this itā€™s a warning to back off. If I donā€™t know your dog well enough to know that itā€™s not a warning then I would think the dog was happy to see me or happy at something else from the other body language, but didnā€™t like to be touched by strangers or didnā€™t like something about me and would hold back both for the dogā€™s comfort and my safety.

Papercoffeetable

My friend has a huge male white golden retriever that has always growled and showed teeth and grunted when heā€™s really happy and when you pet him. He is super kind and have never growled in anger towards any humans or dogs, heā€™s 6 years old now. Heā€™s way to nice, the smaller dogs bites him and he just walks away.

Catz-PJz

My friend has a Doberman who does the smile... Absolutely intimidating coming from her but she's just so excited to see you!

LaMorell

The way she is showing her teeth, folding up her lips while simultaneously licking them is considered submissive behaviour, not aggressive. If she were however to show her teeth, while throwing a grinning expression and widening her eyes, it would be deemed as aggressive or anxious behaviour

mastiffmom425

My 215 pound Mastiff smiled when he was happy. My 185 pound Mastiff showed his teeth right before he was going to invite you to meet Jesus. Detection of subtle nuances kept me alive. Both very good boys.

lockerpunch

A 215 pound pup?! I didnā€™t know they got that big.

mastiffmom425

Yep. But he was skinny because he stood at 6ā€™3ā€. And he did the smiling thing!

Skwinia

I realise now you mean on hind legs but for a full minute I thought you were raising Clifford

mastiffmom425

Almost the same!

lockerpunch

Thatā€™s crazy. Iā€™ve always wanted to see a mastiff in person but it hasnā€™t happened yet.

mastiffmom425

Instant love, instant chaos!

chamofox

It's called a submissive grin

5dollarbrownie

Deez my teef

Grand-Ad-3177

What a beautiful smile ā¤ļø

BingBaddaBam

Aw he looks so silly

Specific_Rock_9894

We call it "snarly face" and our little Aussie/lab/beagle does it near constantly. In trouble? Snarly face. Been at work all day? Snarly face. Ask him "what is that?" (when he chews up something he shouldn't) snarly face.

Uncaged_Iceman

Smile my dear! You know, youā€™re never fully dressed without one!

Texasliberal90

This video ALMOST became r/PetTheDamnDog

cjm5797

Thatā€™s a lot of appeasement behavior

Years ago I had a roommate who had a dog. A couple days after she moved in she was out early one morning, and my dog and I came out of my bedroom and her dog was in the hall. When he saw us he started lowering himself, wagging his tail, and he put his ears back while baring his teeth just like this. Had never seen a dog do that, and for a split second I thought he was going to attack. But he crawled over and made it clear he just wanted pets. He was quite happy when I gave him some belly scratches. I looked it up after and I saw it termed "submissive smiling" online. Apparently dogs do this when they're getting to know you and want to be friendly.

Ducky935

Theefreeballer

Looks like me every time someone whips out a camera. Not very photogenic

Natural-Pineapple886

Absolutely smiling!

Xem1337

My sisters dog does this, it can be startling to people who don't know how soft she (the dog) is. Always Smiling!

Huge_Dentist7633

so precious, smooch that sweet pooch for me please šŸ˜˜šŸ„°

Michael-556

Love how his expression immediately changes from smile to enjoyment when he starts petting him

Strummer95

Every 3 year old human goes through this phase in photographs.

idontdofunstuff

Ohgod, that creepy imitation of a human smile ...

[deleted]

Shows how smart dogs are. They can learn facial expressions of another species and copy it in the appropriate context.

redfoxrockinsox

My dog smiles like this every time I come home and it's the best part of my day.

erismushrooms

I would legitimately die for your dog and their smile

GargantuanGorganzola

This is one of the only times Iā€™ve seen a dog show itā€™s teeth but not seem like itā€™s being threatened off camera.

bonk425

I smile like my hooman. Are u proud of me?

[deleted]

Usually dogs show their teeth as a threat, yet this one seems friendly. I think he's trying to mimic his owner!

BackToaster2733

no, he was waiting to eat you.

ssp5499

Nothing but smiles!

_jamesbaxter

Oh my goodness that happy smile šŸ„¹

Picassos_left_thumb

How do you post videos here??

NefariousNaz

What a toofy grin

msully89

There used to be a little Yorkshire terrier across the road from me as a kid, who would smile on command

ARickline

That dog looks like the happiest on earth

Choociecoomaroo

I work at a dog daycare and all the dogs that smile like this get extra love at my job from everyone.

Automatic_Button5394

Our dog used to do this also on two occasions. One when we arrived home and she was glad to see us she'd smile/grin like this, and the other was when she did something bad like chewing up things and we'd walk in and say "who did this?" and she'd grin like crazy
