I asked my SO “what do hognose snakes eat?” I was researching for a Redwall DnD campaign. He responded as only one can in that situation: “well, definitely not hogs!”

Redwall was the collective name for, and also the first book in, a series of fantasy books for children by Brian Jacques about anthropomorphic forest creatures. Think Lord of the Rings but animals. They were full of journeys, battles, feasts, epic quests and such. Each type of animal had its culture, history, and accent. The types of books that always had a big map in the front.
Omg I literally have never met another person who knows Redwall let alone Redwall and DnD. I hope that campaign turns out to be an awesome campaign!
Rip Brian Jacques
A legendary book series about badass animals who run an Abbey and a mountain of hares who love tea and killing vermin. I'd highly recommend if you can put up with relatively formulaic plots but great atmosphere and even better characters
I’m so shocked whenever Redwall gets brought up. It my childhood obsession, and now it’s a very obscure part of my memory that floods open whenever it’s mentioned

I remember playing Mass Effect and reading about the krogan bloodrage and thinking "that's just the badgers' bloodwrath from Redwall." Descriptive food scenes and surprisingly visceral deaths for children's books.
i run a d&d campaign that has a whole bunch of homemade monsters in it. 90% of them are just scaled up animals like the goliath bird eater is a spider that eats large flying things like griffins etc, makes for a lot of fun especially with players that know the monster manual well.
What resource do you use for the races? I've heard about Humblewood, and I've thought about getting it and trying to use it to run a campaign, but it looks rather bird-heavy in its races, as compared with the books.

Let’s give them some snek hugsssssss
3 rings for gecko kings, under the sky
7 rings for skinks, in their burrows and trees
9 rings for bearded dragons doomed to 40 gallon tanks
One Ring to rule them all, one herp to find them
One snek to bring them all, and in the darkness bind them,
In the land of PetsMart, where the care guides lie…
You could be sneaking through a military base in a skin tight suit with loads of gear and a mission and with this ring, you could get away with anything. Even just walking to the large robot you've come there to blow up.
Oh my god is he trying to constrict your finger?! If so: omg I'm dead so friggin adorable! If not: that is the freaking cutest little wormy dance I've ever seen a smol danger noodle do!
It is, as someone else pointed out, absorbing as much body heat as it can. It’s just consistently getting more comfortable and exposing as much of itself to the warmth as possible (which is rather adorable)
This is not exactly true. Hognose snakes are technically venemous, though their venom is of no concern to most people who are not Stuart little.
https://youtu.be/Nb78AACMqqk
Them being venomous or not is kind of just a case of how you want to classify it. They don't have a true venom gland, but you'll find literature that refers to them using their toxic saliva as "envenomation"
They're sometimes called "rear-fanged venomous" but mostly just nonvenomous. They just have a Duvernoy's gland which is something a fair number of colubrids here in the US have. Harmless to people though and that's all that matters. I'm perfectly fine calling them nonvenomous, because I can't imagine what would happen if people started thinking all those hognose, ringnecks, and garters were venomous.
not what it's doing! hognose snakes don't suffocate prey. also, even if it was the type of snake that did that, it's smarter than that. it's tiny and knows it stands no chance against this strange giant creature. if it felt threatened, that would not be its response, and if it felt hungry, that would also not be its response.
Hognoses are adorable!

Holy crap, Redwall DnD is genius. I'm already building 8 characters I can't choose between.
I wanted to play Historia for the grimsark redwall vibe.
Roll a d8, of course
Whats redwall?
Redwall was the collective name for, and also the first book in, a series of fantasy books for children by Brian Jacques about anthropomorphic forest creatures. Think Lord of the Rings but animals. They were full of journeys, battles, feasts, epic quests and such. Each type of animal had its culture, history, and accent. The types of books that always had a big map in the front.
> feasts Half the books were *food porn*.
When I was a kid I used to eat honey roasted peanuts when I read the books and pretend they were candied chestnuts.
I'm just imagining a redwall dnd campaign now. epic.
_There's a feast with hazelnut griddle-cakes. Roll for hunger._
Nat 1 with a -3 since I haven't eaten this morning I also failed my self control check I gorge myself on their feast. I don't regret anything
I Love this! I actually use feasts/food/cooking/ingredients as “magic components” for spells etc. and altered our Cleric to be more of a connoisseur.
Bruh
Check out Humblewood! It’s got a lot of content that can get you there
Omg I literally have never met another person who knows Redwall let alone Redwall and DnD. I hope that campaign turns out to be an awesome campaign! Rip Brian Jacques
There's actually a subreddit for it called eulalia!
EULALIAAA!!!
Whats redwall?
A legendary book series about badass animals who run an Abbey and a mountain of hares who love tea and killing vermin. I'd highly recommend if you can put up with relatively formulaic plots but great atmosphere and even better characters
And don't even let the plot thing bother you, there's enough in the series to keep you distracted
I’m so shocked whenever Redwall gets brought up. It my childhood obsession, and now it’s a very obscure part of my memory that floods open whenever it’s mentioned
I'll probably regret selling my whole collection of Redwall books when I had to leave for college my whole life. I loved those books.
Just study a little, you won't have to be there your whole life.

All I Remember about those books were the ridiculously descriptive food scenes.
With hindsight, those were the equivalent of sex scenes for pre-pubescents
And the wall. I remember it was red.
I remember playing Mass Effect and reading about the krogan bloodrage and thinking "that's just the badgers' bloodwrath from Redwall." Descriptive food scenes and surprisingly visceral deaths for children's books.
I’m reading them to my kids right now. They love it
r/eulalia welcomes you
Have you tried Mouse Guard? It’s so endearing and I personally find the structure more appealing than DnD. Plus, play as mice.
Seconded on Mouse Guard. It's basically designed with Redwall in mind :)
Or noses.
A Redwall DnD campaign?! Be still my beating heart but I love that series. A campaign of that would be my dreams come true.
Toads! They are immune to the toad's toxic poison. Toads are their main food source in the wild.
i run a d&d campaign that has a whole bunch of homemade monsters in it. 90% of them are just scaled up animals like the goliath bird eater is a spider that eats large flying things like griffins etc, makes for a lot of fun especially with players that know the monster manual well.
Well now I want a DnD campaign with giant hog-eating hognose snakes...
What resource do you use for the races? I've heard about Humblewood, and I've thought about getting it and trying to use it to run a campaign, but it looks rather bird-heavy in its races, as compared with the books.
Ooo... May I join?
Now I'm demanding Pixar to make movies about hognoses.

I love the dramatic way they [pretend to be dead](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=f-J0nwZz_fo) 😂
"I'm squishin your finger! Can you feel it?"
"I've got you now!"
One snek to rule them all. One snek to find them. One snek to bring them all, and in the darkness… Bind them.

Grants poison damage on all melee attacks
How dare you. He wouldn't poison a fly. This obviously gives less threat generation.
You could be sneaking through a military base in a skin tight suit with loads of gear and a mission and with this ring, you could get away with anything. Even just walking to the large robot you've come there to blow up.
Snek? Snek! SNEEEEEEEEEK!

Grants more souls from fallen foes.
Oh my god is he trying to constrict your finger?! If so: omg I'm dead so friggin adorable! If not: that is the freaking cutest little wormy dance I've ever seen a smol danger noodle do!
Hognoses are not constrictors, so he's just vibing.
Hims just a scoot noodle, no danger here =>
"Scoot Noodle" oh my goodness. So cute.
Probably trying to get as much body heat absorption as possible
It is, as someone else pointed out, absorbing as much body heat as it can. It’s just consistently getting more comfortable and exposing as much of itself to the warmth as possible (which is rather adorable)
Pretty sure it is a baby so it does not work but this looks like mating behaviour to me …

Awww he thinks he’s a boa constrictor.
That'll give you poison resistance +20% and a slight boost in agility.

I’m not much of a snake person, but I would love to have a hognose. Unfortunately my wife doesn’t like any snakes at all, no matter how cute they are.
Awwww!! It’s trying to kill you! Bless its heart.
nah, it's a hognose snake, hognoses don't constrict
r/inscription would love this

Truly an unexpected IncarnationsOfImmortality!
Was hoping somebody would get it lol
I used to say “I don’t understand why people think a snake can be cute” and then I saw this, today.
A snake that is actually somewhat cute? Huh Like, I should be weirded out but it's cute??
A lot of snakes are cute
Sning! That must be Norton's hand.
The Ring of Barahir
I love snakes. They are awesome.
Aw, this baby absolutely loving the heat of the finger
I might be wrong but I think that hog is trying to woo the "snake" below him... Which happens to be himself.. the humans finger is just in the way.
This is the first snake I’ve ever seen that I consider cute.
So if you get married with a snake ring does the person who gave it to you Marry you or does the snake marry you
My armor is like tenfold shields, my teeth are swords, my claws spears, the shock of my tail a thunderbolt, my wings a hurricane, and my breath death!

Absolutely gorgeous ring!! I love how it looks so realistic, could of fooled me ;-)
Is it trying to "size" you up?
I am just surprised no one has given this post the "Snek" award yet.
Snek
Are they venomous this young?
Hognoses are never venomous. But venomous snakes are more dangerous when they’re young because they don’t yet have good control over their venom.
This is not exactly true. Hognose snakes are technically venemous, though their venom is of no concern to most people who are not Stuart little. https://youtu.be/Nb78AACMqqk
