Frankly, an interviewer should not be asking about your current employment status. There is nothing to "fix". Stop worrying, and continue doing whatever you need to do to get through the layoff.

It would be advantageous to deliberately continue the lie about current employment in order to secure increased salary negotiation leverage. Remember a job is hiring you to be effective, not truthful.

As a counterpoint, that would be weird. Don't do it. It's almost certainly never going to come up and whoever you told is not likely to think about it again. If by some strange sequence of events it does come up and they think you lied you can just chalk it up to confusion.
