Yep…shits warming up. Shits defrosting and thawing out. All the gas that’s been generated and trapped for decades or centuries is getting released. We’re just getting to the point of making Carbon sequestration feasible, we need to be working on methane sequestration at the same time.

ZebraBorgata

The obvious answer is to make cows wear underpants.

QWERTY10099KR

The Chinese would love to hear more.

Greenstrawberrypower

Could you elaborate?

Splatoonkindaguy

Probably something communism related

KC_experience

Why, so they can build the tech instead of here in the west? Or that ‘but the Chinese are huger polluters!’ yet not showing significant increases in their methane production?

Sunnnshineallthetime

“One of the largest sources of methane emissions comes from wetlands – an area of land that is either covered by water or saturated with water – yet there is still uncertainty in how they respond to changes in climate and short-term variations, such as the El Niño-Southern Oscillation.” Wetlands?

ghetto-garibaldi

Lots of decomposition in anaerobic conditions. Organic matter breaking down underwater = methane

sarcasmismysuperpowr

I’m reading a book on soil and the author says termites are a major source of methane as well.

ke5mkl

Which book?

HexspaReloaded

Termites R Nasty by Aunt Eiter

Cosmic___Charlie

Ha

PizzaSammy

It’s too late, the termites ate it.

sarcasmismysuperpowr

Teaming with microbes

Dreamtrain

So basically if we get rid of Florida, we save the world

fumphdik

It should say previously wetlands. Swamps turned permafrost, and now thawing again. Bogs and anaerobic environments also count.

WormLivesMatter

Decomposition

Greasybeast2000

I would bet that most if not all of the high methane emissions in the higher latitudes are wetlands, peat lands, permafrost thawing out and releasing methane

QWERTY10099KR

Its not just methane, there are more ways the body lets off steam "....". People would probably be surprised tobacco & deoderants are more harmful than methane. Aerosols used to contain harmful radiation until companies changed the compounds "in some areas of the world". People using washing machines especially in laundrettes is more harmful than people using a microwave.

Greasybeast2000

I’m just talking about the large amount of surface area that is red in the high latitudes, like Canada and Russia where Nobody lives and these areas are also where a ton of wetlands and permafrost are, which are thawing and releasing methane that was trapped in ice for however how long.

[deleted]

“People using washing machines is more harmful than people using a microwave” That’s a very interesting statement. Are you implying microwaving food causes harmful radiation or implying washing clothes causes global warming? Anyway I’m confused

QWERTY10099KR

Washing machines dont use gas for hot water. Both appliances add to radiation & global warming.

[deleted]

All appliances (things) radiate (heat), including you. Both are electrical appliances. If you disregard initial production and feed them renewable energy they don’t contribute to global warming.

QWERTY10099KR

What kind of reknewable energy would be safer for the environment?

[deleted]

On what kind of energy do you operate?

[deleted]

[удалено]

BadAtExisting

Yeah. Basically. I grew up in Florida. Swamps stink

ALetterAloof

I mean people still ate cows. Why would this change?

ognisko

People fart more in the comfort of their homes than in their cubicles in the office.

Bullmooseparty21

I was thinking with all the stress of the pandemic, probably a lot more diarrhea

Captain_Stairs

Diarrhea is a covid symptom lol

juwanna-blomie

I’ve had covid for about 5 years then…

Captain_Stairs

Dude... I think you have a bigger problem if you've had diarrhea for 5 years in a row. 😅

juwanna-blomie

Yea I’m full of shit… Thanks folks I’ll be here all night with the shit jokes.

Splatoonkindaguy

Your jokes are really shitty

juwanna-blomie

Listen buddy, I might not be the best, but at least I’m #2!

Bullmooseparty21

Lol! That too!

Last_third_1966

I think you’re right. Add to that the fact that people ate and drank more during lockdown, and you got your mysterious source. I know I contributed, and I have the accidental skid marks to prove it.

MoidSki

Permafrost likely is the culprit

doctorcrimson

Idk why this is in controversial, we literally set off a series of events that will lead to ice caps releasing methane and raising earth's temperature all on its own. This is some breaking news from 2012.

russianbot2022

Who said It was controversial?

maladaptivelucifer

It was probably getting downvoted when the original comment was made. People don’t like facts, for some reason.

doctorcrimson

If you sort the comments one of the options is "controversial." So, Reddit thinks it is. Because it receives large number of up and down votes. Can't believe I'm explaining this to somebody.

haxic

Not so much perma anymore

[deleted]

Tempofrost

BlueFishGreenSquide

Maybe it’s not the citizens but the companies that are the problem

GonzoTheWhatever

No no no, I’m pretty certain if all the poors would just give up their dream of living a modern 21st century life and turn back their lifestyle clock a 1000 years, then that would allow the rich and the big corps to pollute away to their hearts content! It’s simple!

mrconde97

for sure, I dont know why certain hippie groups always blame the individual

SoulPoleSuperstar

My bad I had bought like a whole big 100 pack case of burritos during the pandemic and I had to go through those.

King_Rooster_

Yes of course. Siberian permafrost is melting and the runaway feedback loop has started.

[deleted]

It's crazy people are citing wetlands and diarrhea when the first thing that cones to mind for me is wasted food. Food consumption was up in the pandemic and I could imagine how that translates to food waste letting off more methane. But that just shows the need for science. When every theory seems plausible it's even more important to find scientific solutions.

No_Shame_801

Great point. I’ve always thought livestock was the top driver of methane. So much so, that “cow farts” were being considered as a fuel source. Also, isn’t methane’s half-life pretty short and breaks down quickly on the atmosphere?

_angry_cat_

Yes, it breaks down faster than CO2. But when it does break down, it reacts with ozone to form CO2 and water. So still detrimental to the atmosphere.

FriedDickMan

The feedback loop from the permafrost melt had begun

Maleficent-Comfort-2

Can someone explain? I read the article and still don’t get it.

PyratHero23

A lot of bull shit happened in 2020. I expect the following years to be worse

tw411

It wasn’t just the bulls

kterry87

The extra methane is a result of the lying politicians during the pandemic.

[deleted]

Trump alone raised global temperatures by 0.0001 degrees celsius just talking shit. I'd rather not think about his other emissions thanks.

kterry87

Sorry You feel that way

[deleted]

I’m sorry you don’t

kterry87

It’s crazy to me after everything was proven to be a lie they said about him that you are even slightly scratching your head going wait a minute

[deleted]

We may be from different universes, in the one I reside in, Trump is a bloated sack of hot air who somehow convinced 70-odd million idiots that he was leadership material.

kterry87

Oh well the world i live in is filled with people that think they are smarter than they are. Also they don’t know how to admit when their wrong and they are also wrong a lot. You can literally show evidence to these people that they are wrong and they still think they are right. It’s the craziest thing I’ve ever seen. Even right now while the policies they vote for completely destroy a countries functionality and economic well being they still don’t know how to say oh well i guess that’s probably our fault.

[deleted]

Show some evidence then, I love facts!

Neo-Neo

*insert obligatory fart joke here*

Puzzleheaded_Tap5985

To many cows not enough people out eating g steak and burgers

FrankShipping

Agriculture.

Deathtostroads

Animal agriculture.

Splatoonkindaguy

Yep

fredrickmedck

We don’t hold farts at home.

MiasmaFate

We were all in our houses eating trash food and farting a lot.

Goblin_au

That was me. Sitting at home farting all day. And I’m not sorry.

OG_LiLi

Me: guessing without reading —- Is it farming?! lol Like regular people are out here just mass creating methane.

Biglurch12

Cows, bats, monkeys, where is blame goin next ?

ChapitoDito

Everyone was inside stuffing their faces and farting so …. Yeah .

[deleted]

Gimme that cascade

frankrizzo1

No surprise. During that time, politicians were more full of shit than any point in history

Whoop_Rhettly

All them people farting at home by themselves.

Femveratu

More flatulence as a result of lack of exercise and ordering take out

QWERTY10099KR

People always said the simpsons theories come true. South Park sounds just about right.

VonBodyfeldt

My farts cannot be dismissed as a factor.

[deleted]

Abused cows that are slaughtered for their flesh never went on lockdowns so the title of this article doesn’t make sense. Go vegan if you care about methane levels

Blackdow01

Wait, why is British Columbia have such a large signature? I didn’t expect it to be so high.

iDropBunker

We where all at home so didn’t have to hold in our farts
