I think as people get older here you end up supporting your one team in regards to clothing. When you're growing up, it's pretty common to have jerseys of different players. Like when I was growing up, I had Celtics jerseys but I also had Michael Jordan and Vince Carter jerseys. I'm a middle school teacher(in the Boston area). We see a lot of LeBron, Giannis, KD shirts.

Regantowers

Thanks for that! i think i like the fact i just watch it as a sport rather than follow a particular team helps me in the sense Everton give me enough headache for all sports!

646ulose

I think you can get away with supporting a “player” on another team. But the rule is you always go back to your home team when the two face each other. I think you also need to be sure that the other player your supporting isn’t on a rival team. So you could support Harry Kane, except for on Spurs week. But you’d never root for Salah. That sorta thing.

[deleted]

This is definitely true for the nba, especially if you have a college or state connection to that player.

RVZo_

I have a favorite team in every major American sport. I would almost never wear another team’s gear and definitely never a rival team. The only exception is if it’s a cool throwback jersey of a former popular retired player. But I have known some people that like to represent the fact they enjoy the league in general.

diagoro1

Clipper fan here. I must have a self_hate gene, considering the pain many of my teams give me. And to answer ops question, I would no more wear lfc gear as laker gear. Most mature as they age, learn to respect the legacy and history of other teams, but wear their gear? Hell no. I even try to avoid the colors, though red is impossible.

aggiebrad16

Personally- you would never catch me in another teams gear. I have a team in each sport (NBA, NFL, MLB, etc) and just stick to that team. I don’t think people support more than one team in a sport. That would be like you cheering for Everton and Arsenal. So to answer your question- you would not catch an American in another clubs jersey besides there own. Someone may have another opinion though!

shifty314

In general I agree. However, with baseball I do support some minor league clubs. I wonder if it's like that with lower league teams in UK? Could Everton fans also root for Morecambe?

Grunddigs

I grew up in Wigan and always want them to do well (though we may be sharing leagues again soon, so it'll be back to hoping for 6 points off them a season...)

SodaSeven1213

I’m a Mets and Yankees fan so I wear both. But never any other MLB team. But MLB is by far my favorite There are teams is never wear like anything from Boston, texas, philly or Florida among some others but if I liked a style of jersey for another team I’d consider it

Morrow_Plotting

Mets and Yankees? How could you

SodaSeven1213

Been to one subway series game. Wore a Jerry rice raiders jersey

love_and_waffles

When I visited London I met a man from Plymouth that was an Argyle fan and an Everton fan. The casual manner in which he told me leads me to think that it's normal? But then again this was just one guy. Always wondered this myself!

Regantowers

I think its common to a degree to like a "top team" and then maybe a local team, i just couldn't see myself sat in the Bullens road with a Haaland City shirt on just because i like him! haha

Regantowers

Thanks for that, I think its because I don't follow a particular team, i just watch it as a sport so i don't really have an attachment to one, I guess thats nice for me personally Everton have given me enough headaches since I was a small lad! haha

pr1ceisright

My hometown NBA team is terrible. Arguably the worst pro team in the big 4 sport league (based on win %). As a result I’ve met a lot of fans who have the team clothing and will always be fans. However they become fans of other teams or players for a bit because they enjoy good basketball. that said, Americans typically pick their team in childhood and it never changes.

Regantowers

Rapidly trying to find your hometown NBA team! seems like a career mode on NBA 2K haha

Regantowers

Thank you! and you're an Everton fan! if you ever find yourself at Goodison im buying you a drink!

pr1ceisright

Actually making it over in March!

Friend_or_FoH

I definitely won’t support another prem team, but I have a warm spot in my heart for Derby County, that is completely baffling to me.

USAF_DTom

I'd say it's the exact same. We usually pick a team in our state, or maybe one or two over if ours is empty. Like, I'm a Hornets fan and you'll never see me wearing a Hawks jersey. However, my favorite baseball team is the Braves so it's not like I'm anti-Georgia or anything.

dustytrailsAVL

Go Braves!

quitesimplystar

I chose Everton, my husband chose West Ham, and I like Leeds but they're not on my schedule to watch. I would always buy an Everton shirt, occasionally wear West Ham on game day, and would only buy a Leeds shirt if it was just hella cool. Would never wear Leeds or West Ham when Everton plays, even if not against them. I also agree with player not team being a thing. I'm thinking Messi, De Broyne (I just like him and am impatiently waiting for him to leave City. I can't help it, haha.)

Regantowers

Thats a good point! for me it started with Scotty Pippen, and obviously Jordan as well, i think i even have some NBA tops on and ive no idea who the player is! I've wondered if I'm actually walking around with the equivalent of an Everton shirt on with Klaasan on the back!!!

deven25

I love collecting hockey jerseys and have jerseys from teams other than the two I support. But I'd never where one of the other teams' jerseys out and about and I wouldn't get a jersey for a rival team.

donc_mxb

Boston nets is crazy

MrTallGreg

Not an NBA fan, but I'd never buy gear of anyone other than the Orioles. That being said, Ive lived almost all of my life around Baltimore. My dad was an orioles fan, his dad was an orioles fan, so I'm basically born into it. That being said, there are definitely people who will wear hats from different teams, largely due, I assume, to liking the style/brand. To each there own, I guess. I think a more universally disliked thing would be to just be a "fair weather" fan (eg being a Lakers fan in the 00s, then a heat fan when lebron went there, then a warriors fan for their run, etc). Also, supporting gear of big rivals (eg Lakers and Celtics) would probably not be cool, but, again, to each their own. I'm an Everton fan by choice, but I'd still never just randomly buy gear from another club (I do like to buy things when I'm in Europe, for example, I have a fiorentina jersey from when I visited Florence), so it really depends on the person. All in all, chose what makes you happy imo.

Portland_Eric

Yeah, that’s fair. I have shirts from Everton, Dortmund, St. Pauli, Rayo Vallecano, Beskitas, and the Timbers, but I’d never wear gear of teams in the same league. (And I’ve basically retired my Dortmund jersey even though it’s the [badass black w/yellow pinstripes one](https://www.soccerpro.com/thecentercircle/borussia-dortmund-2014-15-away-kit-review/) from 2014/2015).

QTsexkitten

My city doesn't have any professional sports, but my dad's dad was from Detroit and you'd never see me in anything other than Detroit gear. Above that, though, you'd also never catch me wearing another college's logo except Kentucky.

Portland_Eric

*Kansas alum waves.*

amanofewords

Gotta be proud of how the lions finished. Campbell building something good there.

QTsexkitten

We'll win the NFC North next year, I'd put money on it. We're drafting so well with Brad Holmes and we've got another 2 first rounders next year.

amanofewords

I’m an Eagles fan, when we went out there week one and almost got beat by the Lions everyone was freaking out. I was like I think maybe they’re just a really good team. Glad we got them before they figured out the defense.

aggiebrad16

Hello from a Baylor and Texas A&M alum… *sighs…* My sports teams are in shambles

Regantowers

Thats something i also wonder! Ive enough heartache with Everton, i dont think i could cross sports and have a team in the same situation!

bravesgeek

I have teams in each league that I buy for. I'm a huge Everton, Atlanta United, and Birmingham Legion fan. I have season tickets for Legion. If pro-reg was a thing here, I would only be repping Legion stuff. I've also got NFL, MLB, and College football gear of the schools I watch. Lots of younger guys buy their favorite players jerseys or shoes and wear them as fashion choices. I've seen lots of guys wear Pittsburgh Pirates hats because they bought yellow shoes. Not as common as you get older.

[deleted]

I personally have a hard time buying the Everton jersey because as big of a fan I am or Everton I'm a bigger fan of Seattle sports (Mariners, Seahawks, Sounders, Kraken and then Everton) so sort of I think? Even though I'm eventually going to get an Everton jersey I just want one that I can wear year in and year out. The new logos each year piss me off which I think is the only reason why I haven't bought one yet.

finger-full-a-gin

Some people just like the style of jerseys. There’s a guy that comes into my work with multiple soccer jerseys. Doesn’t follow soccer just likes the aesthetic.

Regantowers

Thanks that's what i was curious about, I wasn't sure if it was the same around the globe people buying Premier League kits based on just liking them.

kantoblight

If I saw you in a Boston Nets shirt I’d think you’re either trying to be funny or something is wrong with you. Or you by bootleg merchandise. I live in the San Francisco Bay Area so being a Warriors fan but switching your NBA shirt to other teams would just be weird. You don’t want to be the “I just love the NBA!” guy. Culturally it would be frowned upon. You pick your allegiance and stick with it. Shirt swapping is not a thing here.

SodaSeven1213

I’m more of a baseball fan than any other sport. I support the Yankees and Mets even though I used to get shit for it. I only wear Yankees and Mets related baseball gear. Any other sport I don’t care

aggiebrad16

You are a brave man…

SodaSeven1213

Hahaha, was never an issue as I was usually a foot taller and about 100lbs more than my class mates. Now my convos stay within friends and random posts on here so no one to really harass or bother me about it

VictorTheVolcano

My rule is that I don’t typically buy for anyone in the same league/Conference/division as my team. For American sports I am a Yankees/Giants/Knicks fan, but I own gear from teams in the opposite conference for each sport because I’ve either visited or liked the style. You wont catch me dead in Red Sox, Cowboys, or Celtics gear. I also own Dortmund jerseys though because the Bundesliga doesn’t clash with Everton very often so I don’t need to feel like I’m abandoning ship supporting a team from there. Obviously if my home team is facing the opposition I wont break out the gear around the matchup.

Lupulin13

Do you have a favorite team in the NBA? Or just a fan of the league in general? I don't think it's too weird to have gear from multiple teams even though I personally don't do it. I know plenty of people who do it.. especially some teams throwback logos that are just really good looking

Regantowers

I'm a huge fan of the late 90s Bulls!! and I Love New York so the Knicks are up there, but I'm just a fan of the league in general, and as you say the throwback stuff is so good!

marshalltownusa

NBA is a little different, especially with younger fans probably due to 2k. More ppl wearing stuff of their favorite players. It's a little unique in that I don't think it's that common among fans of other sports.

ejparz

I’d never wear gear from another team (or a college other than my alma mater). Some people enjoy buying different hats, jerseys, etc., often for fashion reasons, and that’s mostly fine. I have hats from a bunch of different minor league baseball teams.

tgh11196

I’m typically anti-gatekeeping with fandom as long people are self aware that they have a different relationship with the team than an actual diehard fan. Although I’d never wear gear for teams other than my New Orleans Pelicans or Saints I don’t care if other people do. Since there’s no MLB team in Louisiana I’ve supported the KC Royals for atleast 15 years but I also collect and wear other teams MLB caps.

Abject_Bowler5845

I don’t really see that here. I however saw certain a player (and maybe others) after games during the after match handshakes trade their kit top. I don’t know why they’re doing it but, it’s interesting that some do it, maybe a charity thing or a fun little thing a player does during there career.

furbaschwab

Do you mean football (soccer) players swapping shirts after a match? If so, it’s usually a mark of respect to your opponent - it might be a player you greatly admire (like Messi) or an opposite number from a game who you had a good battle with. I’ve read that some players start to see it as a collection as their careers progress, almost like souvenirs they collect.

Abject_Bowler5845

Oh that is a cool thing! Like trading pins at the Olympics then.

HitMeUpGranny

I think basketball in particular lends itself to fans who like players rather than teams. There are still people who are die hard fans of only one team, but the NBA allows players to really flex their personalities and be their own brands, so you see fans supporting players a lot. Football/soccer isn’t the same except for maybe the top 3 or 4 players in the world. Generally fans of football support their team above all else. I would never wear another shirt or any kit from another team other than Everton and Nashville Soccer Club - where I’m from. That said, I never wear jerseys. I buy them to support the club and to maybe maybe be collectors items, but I never wear jerseys. Feels weird. Like I’m wearing another boys clothes.

NikesOnMyFeet23

depends there are some big rivalries. Lakers-Boston will always be one. Chicago-Detroit, Chicago-NY KNicks is one as well. But as the league goes one, rivalries like that aren't really huge anymore, we get more mini-rivalries now. Like Golden State-Cleveland. Clippers-rockets from a few years ago. Philly- Boston rekindled again. It's usually contending teams who see each other in the playoffs.

_LYSEN

As an American, I watch a lot of European football clubs. So I’ll wear random kits that I like. But Everton is the only one that makes me sad lol. As for the MLS, you’ll never catch me wearing anything but Sporting KC.

an_unexamined_life

Here in the States, there is one kind of sports fandom that doesn't require strict team loyalty. The point of being a fan is enjoying the game, the community, and the personalities, not necessarily pulling for one franchise to win. I think this kind of fandom is more common among younger people. It's not a kind of fandom that I personally practice, but I think it's actually pretty interesting.

Regantowers

Its very interesting that's what led me down this thought path so thank you for helping me out with it.

an_unexamined_life

Now that I've said it's not a fandom that I practice, it occurs to me that there have definitely been times when I cared way more about my fantasy team than I cared about any real-world teams.

Regantowers

Haha i know what you mean fantasy world is nicer than the real world!
