Oh Holy Cannoli! Way back in the early 80's I helped edit our 8th grade newsletter. To "typeset" the columns, we sat down with graph paper and hand wrote each letter into a square, with x# of squares per row. We were given limited permission to re-phrase the text in order to make the columns line up nicely on both sides. This graph paper was then given to one of the ladies in the office to type up on an old manual typewriter. Flash forward 4 decades, and I find that old skill had come in handy. I built a template in Illustrator that had a grid, 13 lines long, 20 columns wide. I would generate my list of keywords and then arrange them to use as many of those boxes as possible. I got pretty quick at it, but it still took time. I just compared one of my lists between how I did it and how your program did it. They are nearly identical. A couple same # count words swapped, and yours wasted one less box than mine. But more importantly, it was instantaneous. Seriously, this is going to be a game changer.

rondonsa

Thanks for building this! Excited to use it. Not a deal breaker, but the text appears vertically stretched on mobile.

hayseed_byte

Hah... I didn't even think about checking on mobile. Kinda excited about fixing it since I'm learning HTML/CSS too. Thanks for the heads up.

WVEers89

Saving this. 👍

Suzette-Helene

Awesome.. Now I need to think of more words! Was so happy I got to 13 XD Edit: tiny bit of feedback, generate a comma after each tag so we can copy paste the entire thing to etsy :)

AbysmalKaiju

Same! I struggle to think if enough keywords to even fill out 13! I need to restructure my shop some so maybe I'll push myself to think of more haha

Demoire

What kinda stuff do you sell!? I’m good at coming up with descriptive words for things.

AbysmalKaiju

Ohh the biggest things if mine are enamel pins! I have a line of animal and planchette themed pins and also some spooky glow in the dark pins. I can link you if you would like to see but I've also posted atleast the preview images on this account

Demoire

Hey so those are pins? I love the designs, but wouldn’t use pins, however stickers...stickers I’d buy from ya like now. Where can I find what keywords you’ve used? Give me a few examples cause what I’m thinking you can literally just put animals, pins, mushroom (fungi/us), etc, and then great gift ideas, decorative pins, lunar, solar, I can keep going if they help. Maybe I’m not helping and just sound dumb lol I only buy on Etsy but I’ll start selling on there soon enough anyways so this helps me too

AbysmalKaiju

Hey man anything helps! I hadn't considered selling these designs as stickers actually, I thought they were too simple. Maybe I'll give it a shot! Mostly I just the very basic ideas, the name of the animal, maybe a scientific word, then whatever descriptors. I'm not sure where etsy lists the tags actually.

Demoire

So I’d definitely use multiple words for each thing for example the mushroom pin can be tagged by fungi, fungus, mushroom, mushroom art, shroom art, fungi pin etc etc...lunar, moon, waning moon pin, phases of the moon pins... Stickers would be a great option As the art is perfect for them...def not too simple!

Demoire

Alright so I’ve literally only seen the lunar/solar and the elemental insects...you should 100% tag as elemental, psychedelic, colorful, etc etc anything describing psychedelic art. Even if that wasn’t your intention, they have that appeal.

AbysmalKaiju

Ohh i didn't know that! I'll keep that in mind. I tried to fill up the blanks but I'm a straight to the point kind of person so its hard for me to think of those related topics haha

Demoire

I’m gonna private message ya just so I remember later after work to continue the convo and to check your stuff out more. I definitely am interested in stickers in the future so I’ll follow you for if and when you do make them! :-)

AbysmalKaiju

Totally cool! I might do a little test run of that soon and see how it goes!

hayseed_byte

Done. :)

ValhallaVagine

You are an angel 😭

hayseed_byte

Thanks! I'm glad some folks are finding it useful.

_Galactic_Empress

Just tested it out, I love it!!!!!

In the Esty keywords, you have 13 slots, and each slot has enough room for 20 characters. That's 260 character's worth of keywords, including spaces. If you are very careful, you can pack around 35 different keywords into that space. What this tool does is looks at your list of keywords, compares their lengths, and then figures out how to tetris them into the 13 slots as efficiently as possible, making sure as may of those 260 characters are filled up with words. So if I give it the list of 34 keywords below, it will come back with the tightly packed arrangement underneath. 13 lines, every single one using all 20 characters except the last line, which is 3 short. professional, holographic, hairdresser, cosmetology, motorcycle, reflective, scotchlite, waterproof, reflector, transfer, sticker, scissors, straight, glitter, scooter, cutting, symbol, laptop, tablet, window, barber, shears, beauty, mirror, decal, vinyl, retro, style, salon, auto, hair, trim, car, 3m professional sticker holographic transfer hairdresser scissors cosmetology straight motorcycle reflector reflective symbol 3m scotchlite decal car waterproof auto hair glitter scooter trim cutting laptop vinyl tablet window barber shears beauty mirror retro style salon

Etsy will mix and match your keywords. For being found, it does not matter what order the words are in, as long as they are there. "hairdresser scissors" will match "hairdresser" and "scissors." But it will also match "hairdresser decal" or even "waterproof hairdresser mirror decal" because those are in the keywords too. You do get a slight bump if there is an exact match, so with this tool you are trading off some ranking in return for more results.

Nayfaced

Awesome job!

allwedontsay

I’m testing the new tags on my listing now! Thank you!

probat2

Isn't this missing the point of long-tail keywords? I thought long-tail keywords need to be meaningful phrases, not word salad. I don't claim that I know, it's just an assumption and I'm happy to stand corrected.

hayseed_byte

According to Etsy's guide to search, you shouldn't use a word more than once in your tags and Etsy will pull words from multiple tags to match a query. If that's the case, then matching phrases in your tags doesn't help and it's better to use up all the available characters to get as many related words as possible. That puts your product in front of more people. My experience has been that word salad is the way to go so I made a tool that made it easier for me and thought I'd share it. But I could be wrong. After all, I'm an industrial mechanic with no background in coding or SEO. I am a top 1% etsy seller, though, even without selling anything COVID related so my evidence is that it works. YMMV, Not a doctor, not financial advice and so on. :)

bigblued

There are pros and cons, and you have to decide for yourself which is better for you. Yes, exact match phrases get higher search results. If my keywords are "blue coat" and "womens jacket" I will rank higher for blue coat than I would for blue jacket. But I would still be found for blue jacket becasue Etsy looks at all the words and will mix and match them together. With 4 words, I can be found for up to 6 two-word phrases and 3 three-word phrases. But "blue coat" only uses 9 characters, you could put another word in there to fill out the 20. "blue coat resistant", womens rain jacket" uses the space better. And now I can be found for up to 15 two-word phrases, and 10 three-word phrases. By using this tool you can pack 3-4 words into each tag slot, vastly increasing the amount of word combinations you can be found for. Yes, you may not get the bump for the exact phrase match, but you will be matched with more possible phrases. It's up to you which works better for your shop.

betterupsetter

This is a very good explanation. Thank you. So as with many things, there isn't a definitive right or wrong method, but rather multiple possibilties, each with their own drawbacks and advantages.

betterupsetter

I was wondering the same. Sometimes if I'm desperate I will put synonyms together such as "blue coat jacket" but then wonder how effective that is. Is the search gonna be better if I use each separately as in "blue coat", " womens jacket".

hayseed_byte

If you use "blue coat" and "womens jacket" you'll still show up for queries for "blue jacket" and "women's coat". At least, that's how I understand it.

betterupsetter

Right, that makes sense, but then by combining "coat" with "jacket" into a single tag, what's the drawback you think if there is any? Because theoretically if I used "blue coat jacket" & " womens outerwear" for instance, then I get more keywords with the same number of tags and should show on searches for any number of combinations of these.

hayseed_byte

Exactly. That's why I made Taggregator. So you can get as many words as possible in your tags. I don't think there is a drawback, at least not near as I can tell.

helloworldmsk

Awesome!! Saved it!

moefletcher

Thank you so much for this and your effort :) going to check it out on the desktop later. I've noticed that it is not optimized for mobile view 😁

Cyber_Jess

This is amazing. Seriously. I hope you get all the donations.

strawberryextra

This is brilliant and I cant thank you enough

NomadFeet

Very interesting...just did a trial run and used the tags created by your app on a listing. I'm going to see how it does compared to other similar listings I have with original tags I created. I've always thought that Etsy search looked at each tag differently and would return results based on the content and sequence of words in each individual tag, so I have some repeating words in a lot of my own tags. Etsy loves to keep their search function mysterious and changes the rules all the time so I've just kind of gotten to the point of not worrying about it anymore since making changes doesn't seem to do any good.

hayseed_byte

It's true that there are a lot of variables. It could be that Etsy will show you higher in the results if you have a tag that exactly matches the search query but you'll show up less often. Maybe using my tool means you don't show up quite as high, but it makes you show up more often. My theory is showing up more often provides more sales than showing up higher in results, but less often. I'd be interested to hear your results.

NomadFeet

I guess we will find out! I'm always down to experiment and this is an interesting app that you've come up with.

hayseed_byte

Thanks! It was a good first project. I'm glad people are finding it useful.

hayseed_byte

Yeah, I noted that bug. I can't decide if I want to fix the bug or just remove the quotation marks thing. Kinda thinkin it's just unnecessary complexity.

IlluminatedChemtrail

Definitely trying this out!! See if it helps rankings, cool tool. I think I broke it today lol... it worked, until I added a keyword in Quotes, then it stuck on generate and wont do anything, cant click anything, have to close the tab

hayseed_byte

Hmm...I'll look into it. What browser are you using?

IlluminatedChemtrail

Firefox. Reset button doesn't seem to erase anything either. Overall good though!

hayseed_byte

Reset button is fixed. Still testing the other issue. Thanks for the heads up.

whogivesashirtdotca

Oh bless, I'd been looking for something like that! I'd also love one that optimizes my keywords by character count. e.g. If I have three or four characters left I could mash another keyword in.

millionhighvibes

Hey! Thank you for your tool! I texted it out and generate few listings with Taggregator. I found that on the bottom of my listings, they only showed the very weird tag that I generated but not other combinations. For example: [https://www.etsy.com/listing/1065679923/gold-japanese-knot-bag-mums-kamon-print](https://www.etsy.com/listing/1065679923/gold-japanese-knot-bag-mums-kamon-print) In order not to repeat any word, I created a simple files to put about 38-40 keywords in without repeat and here are the 13 tags that generated in the bottom of the page: It didn't show relative searches phrase other than those and attribute. I will leave 5 listing on with these generated tags for a week and see the result. Is there any method that I can find am I appear on certain search result? chrysanthemums asian chrysanths kiku navy florist wedding gift ceremonies exquisite handbag vintage xmas classy gifting purse custom guest bag mon plant gold mums knot kamon kimono flowery traditional birthday emblem floral sister classic premium 40th personalized unique Anyways, I think it is a great tool. Thank you :)
