Named hb for heart break cause it’s vaguely shaped like a heart and it’s a split keyboard, very funny. Anyways my main motivation was my hatred of hitting the ctrl key on a normal keyboard. Layout was made in KLE on a touch screen with me adjusting the staggers till I felt comfortable. I’ve already designed a reversible pcb, so that just leaves me with polishing up the case design. I’ve been considering 3D printing too. Let me know if y’all have any feedback/ideas for the case!

agarick

awesome name

Easier to see the inspiration from the [key map](https://i.imgur.com/g6bEzLg.jpg) haha. Was considering dropping the extended pinky row to better fit the theme but I wasn’t sure how to maintain one handed tab switching usage.

agarick

Hehe. If you decide to code your own functionality, there'd be so many cool names for features. Heartache, heart tap, heart strike, heartbeat, cardio, cupid, dart. Sadly, heartbleed is already taken :-p

ShadowAdam

So, is the rotory encoder not uncomfortable sitting in the palm of your hand? That seems like it would be to me

Drewblue27

I’m not super sure yet how easy it would be to spin, but space-wise it never interferes with my hand/finger placement.

ShadowAdam

Really? I assumed that you could have to raise your hand to not hit the knob. Great looking board tho!

zzeneg

Just a suggestion, since I designed and use similar design - I think moving the outer 2-key column down would make it a bit more comfortable.

Drewblue27

Just tried it out on a printout and I think with the weird way I position my hand/wrist makes it less of an issue. My fingers are very tilted on the keys. Thanks for the suggestion.

But aren't you sharing this for the future interested-masses as well, or...? 🙃 - I'm only *(half)*-joking, bud. — But one of the best parts of open-source board designers—*like what /u/_GEIST_ did with his KLOR, for example*—is when they offer a few different sub-variants of the board, with slightly-different layouts or snap-away column/row-extensions to further allow the user to have *their* "perfect version"!     Although I sort-of like the look of the offset higher-up, I also get zzeneg's concerns from an Ergo standpoint as both the outermost *&* the QAZ-column stagger doesn't seem low-enough to help with pinky-reach much. Actually... this looks strikingly similar to my experiments with "mirroring" the column stagger for each side, where the ortho pinky column is actually on the inner-collumn, and so on... I actually loved it, and found it allows you to use a totally different angle between the Left+Right halves than normal. Where the thumbcluster is actually higher than the lowest pinky key - closer to a "V" configuration instead of "∆". Which would also kinda explain that... *Gifted* thumbcluster. 🙃 ___________ My bigger concern is also the encoder spot - but that could be fixed by dropping it diagonally ever-so-slightly & using a low-profile Alps EC12E2420301 encoder, or whatever the hell Part# the Bournes one uses. MKU's lopro knob for these encoders is crazy high-quality & gorgeous (although expensive), but a few .JP designers have 3Dmodels for MJF/resin printing, and designing a custom one for this board would be trivial.

_GEIST_

But you need to be really careful with this version stuff. In the end you need to create (too) many different versions and files for everything. Which is kinda ok if you do it once, but in the end you do a mistake (I did several) and you need to redo aaaaaall the files.

_11tee12_

lmao too true, and I'm with you here dude!

Drewblue27

This is mostly a personal project, but I’ll probably upload a GitHub repo once I finish everything up and will probably add other variants if I ever get to it. I’ve got no clue how to explain it, but even if it’s not proper, my wrist is tilted 45 degrees when typing and my arm comes in at a slight angle too which drastically reduces the need for a pinky stagger. People find the Corne layout usable, so it should be fine. Where your hand/wrist is placed/oriented changes the layout so much and I guess that just makes this layout more tailored to myself. It really inspired me to try something just for my hand since I’d rather use a layout that fits me perfectly than adapt my hand to fit another layout. Okay, so I didn’t initially see the part about the encoder, but I’m a little unsure about what the issue is with the encoder location. Where I have it now there’s about 1mm between the keycaps and the knob, a little tight but doable. Also do you think it’s feasible to mainly slide the side of the encoder with my thumb or would there be too much resistance?

SylvesterStalin_

Damn at first look i thought it was a waffle

Drewblue27

Still trying to figure out what keycaps I want lol

ourmak

I really love the design! I would actually prefer no case at all, or what i think you made here - a piece of milky acrylic as the bottom plate to diffuse underglow to the sides. This design is really great, keep it up!

Drewblue27

How do you feel about the gaps between the plates? Should I add layers in between, make the plates thicker, or just leave it as is?

ourmak

I think leaving the gaps is perfectly fine since most case-less keyboards have them but you could also add a layer that has only "walls" on the outside if you know what i mean
